Course Content
Is it for me? This course is for you if you already teach on higher education programmes in a Further Education setting or would like to prepare for the experience. It explores the challenges of teaching students from Foundation Degree to Master’s level and helps define the ‘HEness’ of it all. It also provides a forum to explore myths and realities around teaching at this level. Above all, this course is about tapping into the excellent teaching and learning practice to be found within an FE environment whilst looking at ways of establishing a sense of rigorous and respected practice. Participants will also explore the role that research plays for the HE practitioner and the how and why of quality assurance and improvement.
Entry requirements All participants would normally hold a minimum PLACE PHOTO HERE, of a first degree and preferably will have OTHERWISE DELETE BOX completed a teacher training programme. You should also be willing to study at Master’s level (level 7) and recognise that a course of this level will require some time dedicated to independent research and writing. With that in mind, participants will be expected to be able to produce work that is referenced according to Harvard conventions and written in clear, Standard English.
What work will I do? You would be expected to take an active part in the sessions and contribute to some discussions outside of class time. The assessment is broken into three tasks:
Observation and critical evaluation Resource production and justification Critical evaluation of practitioner research or scholarly activity review of self
Teaching and learning strategies in HE and FE Issues facing teachers of HE in an FE context Expectations of students at HE level What the FE context can offer Professional Identity The HE environment Developing students’ higher critical thinking and analytical skills Developing independent study practices QA and QI policy and practice Curriculum Design
