WELCOME

Mark Adams Artistic Director Edinburgh International Film Festival

Welcome to the 69th edition of the Edinburgh International Film Festival and to a busy, provocative, exciting and rather playful programme. It is a programme we are all rather pleased with and one that I hope will appeal to film fans from far and wide. We are working hard to emphasise that word ‘festival’ when it comes to our 2015 event. Alongside a wonderful spread of new films and retrospectives we’ll be offering the chance to meet talent from the films – Robert Carlyle and Ewan McGregor to name just a couple – and will be staging some enthralling and entertaining special events.

I’m especially delighted that we can bookend our festival with two wonderful world premieres and even more excited that they are a pair of terrific new Scottish films. We’ll be opening with Robert Carlyle’s directorial debut The Legend of Barney Thomson (in which he stars alongside a wonderful Emma Thompson) and closing with Scott Graham’s moody and magnificent Iona. In between there will be premieres a-plenty, often accompanied by filmmakers or performers, all in place to help our loyal audience get the most out of some of the best new films around.

Our country focus this year shines the spotlight on Mexico and offers up some cinematic gems both new and old. Amongst our retrospectives we draw attention to classic films that originated on television (such as Steven Spielberg’s Duel and Michael Mann’s The Jericho Mile) in our Little Big Screen season (supported by American Airlines), and also celebrate the early – and very influential – work of Walter Hill, as well as looking at the work of animation legend Ralph Bakshi.

Cinematic TV

59

Our commitment to supporting film education and young audiences is as strong as ever, and we have worked with a team of young programmers to help highlight films that might appeal to their peers. It is a programme packed with film highlights – from the best of world cinema to terrific new independent American cinema, from late night cult treats (don’t miss the rare screening of the rather wild Roar) to family delights… please join us for what promises be a wonderful EIFF.

OPENING NIGHT GALA

WORLD PREMIERE

The Legend of Barney Thomson Robert Carlyle/UK/2015/93 min Cast: Robert Carlyle, Emma Thompson, Ray Winstone, Tom Courtenay, Ashley Jensen, Martin Compston WED 17 JUNE 21:00 FESTIvAL ThEATRE PRICE: £15.00 (£10.00 COnCS) A mild-mannered Glasgow barber accidentally becomes a serial killer. Scotland’s own Robert Carlyle makes his directorial debut with this delightful jet-black comedy about a downtrodden barber whose mundane life is turned upside down when he accidentally turns killer. Carlyle also plays the lead role as mild-mannered Barney Thomson, an oldfashioned barber who is slipping down the pecking order in the Glasgow barber shop where he works. After an accidental killing, he turns to his hilariously fierce mother (a quite wonderful Emma Thompson) for help. Based on a novel by Douglas Lindsay – the first of seven books about Barney Thomson – the film was shot in Glasgow, with the city a vibrant and vital backdrop to the hilariously black story. Locations include the East End (where the barber shop is located), Shawfield dog track and the Barrowlands, which doubles as the bingo hall where Barney’s controlling mother Cemolina spends quality time. Emma Thompson is a revelation as the mother, complete with Glaswegian accent and a serious amount of make-up to help transform her into a truly memorable character. The strong cast also includes Ray Winstone (as a fish-out-of-water London copper exasperated by his Scottish police colleagues), Martin Compston (as one of Bobby’s hairdresser rivals) and veteran actor Tom Courtenay (as the police chief baffled by a serial killer who is mailing body parts from a series of different Scottish tourist spots). The Legend of Barney Thomson is a deliriously dark comedy to be cherished…plus, make sure you stay on for the hilarious outtakes over the credit reel.

CLOSING NIGHT GALA

WORLD PREMIERE

Iona Scott Graham/UK, Germany/2015/110 min Cast: Ruth Negga, Douglas Henshall, Tom Brooke, Michelle Duncan, Ben Gallagher, Sorcha Groundsell SUN 28 JUNE 17:00 FESTIvAL ThEATRE PRICE: £15.00 (£10.00 COnCS) A family drama set against the most beautiful of backdrops. A striking and enthralling drama set against the stunning backdrop of the Inner hebrides island of Iona, director Scott Graham’s follow-up to his award-winning debut feature Shell is a real delight, with impressively sustained performances astutely complemented by the starkly beautiful environment. It may be a modestly budgeted film, but writer/director Graham shows remarkable control as he weaves a story that takes in family traumas, religion, domestic violence and pastoral glory, but never losing track of the haunting story of a young woman whose return to the Christian community on the island of her birth is the dramatic core of the film. Iona (a mesmeric performance by Ruth negga, who has found international fame thanks to her recurring role in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and her teenage son Bull (Ben Gallagher) seek refuge from a violent crime back on the island where she was raised. Her return exposes Bull to the more gentle way of life she rejected when she left the island as a teenager and also resonates amongst those friends she had once left behind. An impressive support cast also includes Douglas henshall, Tom Brooke, Michelle Duncan and Sorcha Groundsell. The film has a gentle intensity – part coming-of-age story and part returning-home drama – and is given real emotional resonance thanks to Ruth negga’s striking central performance combined with Scott Graham’s sure hand and tangible sense of location. Iona is a beguiling and elegant film.

One of the best British films of the year, Andrew haigh’s subtly devastating film is about the fractured relationship between a couple - delightfully played by Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay – as they head towards their 45th wedding anniversary party. A powerful and enthralling follow-up to Haigh’s critically acclaimed 2011 film Weekend, the film (a success at this year’s Berlin Film Festival) dwells on how an apparently happy union can be tormented by an echo from the past, with a decades-long bond threatened by insecurities and irrational jealousy.

A striking new British drama.

The ultimate dance for freedom.

An impressive feature debut for young British director Joe Stephenson (who is now in preproduction on a much-hyped noel Coward biopic set to star Ian McKellen and vanessa Redgrave) about optimistic 15-year-old Richard – troubled with learning difficulties - and his restless and abusive older brother. When Richard falls for 17-year-old Annabel (Yasmin Paige, from Submarine) the relationship between the brothers is stretched to breaking point, family secrets are revealed and life for Richard starts to finally change direction.

Afshin has always loved to dance, but in his home country of Iran it is illegal. From dance classes as a boy to undercover dance clubs, Afshin has repeatedly defied society’s laws in order to pursue his passion. In the light of mounting pressure from the government, how long can Afshin and his friends continue to perform in secret? Based on the inspirational true story of choreographer Afshin Ghaffarian.

What starts out like a bit of adolescent fun - two 10 year-old boys who are running away from home find a sheriff’s abandoned police cruiser and steal it - turns dark and dangerous. Kevin Bacon is in brilliant form as the sheriff who has plenty to hide, but the two young boys (James Freedson-Jackson and Hays Wellford) are remarkable. A smart comedy-drama with a subversive edge.

A summer of love in San Francisco.

A cult buzz-film at Sundance this year, this edgy comedy-drama starts out looking like it will be a familiar high school reunion movie before it heads off into murkier territory as it tackles sexuality, identity and self-confidence. The lead pairing between Jack Black and James Marsden is terrific, with Marsden especially fine as hollywood actor Oliver Lawless, unhappy with his lot in television commercials but seen as the big hero if Black’s needy and insecure Dan can convince him to come back to Pittsburgh for a typically cringeworthy high school reunion.

In 1970s San Francisco, precocious young cartoonist Minnie (Bel Powley) can’t wait to grow up. Her mother’s (Kristen Wiig) noholds-barred approach to partying colours her adolescent judgement, encouraging her to seek grown-up thrills anywhere she can. Instigating a liaison with her mother’s boyfriend, Monroe (Alexander Skarsgård), she begins a passionate affair with a man two decades her senior, and despite the age gap remains utterly in control. Expertly handled and light-hearted in tone, the film boasts great performances, including a truly accomplished central performance from starin-the-ascendant Bel Powley.

Growing up in “The Bottoms” with aspirations beyond drug dealing is not easy for high school geeks Malcolm, Diggy and Jib. But who better to take on the local heavies than three smart, resourceful and utterly brazen kids desperate to escape ‘the hood’? Irreverent, audacious and sometimes shocking, Dope is a refreshing coming-of-age tale for the post hip-hop generation. Music by naughty by nature and nas is rounded out by tunes from Pharrell Williams. Sean Combs serves as executive producer.

A passenger in the car that killed the young woman’s parents, Franny is a deeply tortured soul hiding a dark secret. Is it guilt that drives his extravagant gifts, or is Franny simply trying to re-live happier times when Olivia’s parents, his best friends, were still alive? A powerhouse central performance from Richard Gere rounds out this terrific character study, which examines and underlines the thesis that money can’t buy peace of mind.

Brilliant impressionistic take on the talent that is Brian Wilson.

Schwarzenegger is magnificent in a brilliant zombie drama.

Sometimes family reunions can go a bit helter-skelter.

This is no simple, formally-structured biopic. Instead, Bill Pohlad’s mesmeric film focuses on two contrasting periods in the life of Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson: the sunkissed success of the 1960s, when Wilson (played by Paul Dano) defined the sound of the group; and then contemporary times, where the middle-aged Wilson (now played by John Cusack) starts a romance that sees him set to clash with a controversial therapist who has taken over all aspects of his life. An elusive and enthralling film.

A zombie film with an art-film sensibility, the engrossing, engaging and genuinely moving Maggie sees a bearded Arnold Schwarzenegger at his very best as a loving Midwest farmer who is determined to bring his daughter Maggie (Abigail Breslin) home after she is infected by cannibalistic zombies. As the disease takes hold, her loving father stays by her side, fending off the military and police (as well as other zombies) with the inevitable transformation growing ever closer. A memorable variation on the zombie movie.

When straight-laced lawyer nick (Jay Duplass) has a surprise, rare visit from his artist brother Conrad (Linas Phillips), he is horrified to discover his unhealthy fascination with real-life serial murderer Charles Manson. As Conrad excitedly drags his brother around the former cult leader’s infamous LA landmarks, nick is increasingly concerned by his sibling’s bizarre attraction to Manson. Tensions rise as their family history unwinds, and nick has to fight to keep their relationship alive. A gently comic, cleverly composed and boldly original look at complicated family relationships.

Writer/director Alex holdridge’s indie film, the award-winning In Search of a Midnight Kiss, embraced a heady romance between two people on new Year’s Eve in Los Angeles. This time round, he and co-writer/director Linnea Saasen head over to Europe for the story of Anderson (Holdridge). On a trip to Berlin, he bumps into old flame Lina (Saasen), a norwegian dancer he met in Montenegro some years earlier. This brings back memories of their brief but intense romance.

On an isolated family farm, brother and sister Zak and Eva endure their father’s strict regime by exploring their mysterious abilities under the cover of night-time. When their mother falls gravely ill, it sets in motion a series of events that will reveal dark family secrets and stretch the pair’s bonds to the limit. This American indie combines fantasy with intimate drama to tantalising effect.

The Overnight is about what happens when an ordinary married couple are unsettled by the eccentric and sexually-orientated enthusiasms of another couple. Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling play a couple who have just moved to LA and are befriend by a sophisticated couple (played with real relish by Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche). After a dinner party, they put their respective kids to bed… but then things take a change of direction and a debate about sex becomes part of the agenda.

Oliver hirschbiegel returns to the Second World War (he made the acclaimed film Downfall) and German-language cinema for this tense and fascinating story about a determined German man who tried to assassinate Hitler in 1939. He brilliantly fleshes out the story of Georg Elser (an impressive Christian Friedel), who planted a bomb behind Hitler’s lectern in a Munich beer cellar. An offbeat romantic comedy about love, music and redemption.

Returning from his 40 days in the desert, Jesus (Ewan McGregor) encounters a father and son (Ciarán hinds and Tye Sheridan) in distress, and intervenes in their fate. Beautifully crafted by writer/ director Rodrigo Garcia, this meditative exploration of the Biblical standard is visually arresting, thought-provoking cinema, featuring exceptional performances from McGregor, Sheridan and hinds, and stunning cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki, the Oscar-winning DOP of Iñárritu’s Birdman and Cuarón’s Gravity.

Acclaimed documentary maker Amy Berg (who made West of Memphis and Prophet’s Prey - p.34) makes a fine fiction debut with this striking police procedural, based on the novel by Laura Lippman and a script by nicole holofcener. Elizabeth Banks stars as a detective investigating two missing children, who revisits a case she handled 10 years earlier when two 10 year-olds were jailed for abducting and killing an infant. The impressive cast also includes Diane Lane, Dakota Fanning and nate Parker.

The quirky talent of director nobuhiro Yamashita (who made cult films Linda Linda Linda and Tamako in Moratorium) shines through in this oddball romantic-comedy about Shiego (Subaru Shibutani, lead singer of Japanese band Kanjani8). newly released from prison, he loses his memory after being beaten up. Taken in by Kasumi (top actress Fumi nikaido), she discovers his talent for singing and gets him to front the band she represents. A tender, well-cast film with some great musical moments.

A South African township set version of Puccini’s La Bohème.

Obsessive chambermaid meets androgynous dominatrix.

Director Mark Dornford-May is reunited with singer Pauline Malefane and their Isango Ensemble for a Cape Town set reworking of Puccini’s La Bohème, sung in Xhosa (with some English dialogue) and retitled Breathe Umphefumlo. It is 10 years since they made the memorable U-Carmen eKhayelitsha, a version of Bizet’s Carmen, and while this new film is slightly more serious fare it is presented with charm and panache, with percussion replacing an orchestra and a jazz trio added in for good measure.

For mild-mannered and shy chambermaid Lynn (vicky Krieps), cleaning is less of a work chore than a real obsession. She not only makes sure everything is pristine, but also examines her clients’ lives in great depth, even hiding beneath their bed to watch them unseen. One day, she is intrigued by a dominatrix she watches, and hires her - with the pair engaging in an intimate, explicit and ultimately tender relationship.

visually creative biopic of the brilliant, troubled ‘godfather of cinema’, Eadweard Muybridge.

An emotional and darkly comic look at voluntary euthanasia.

The life-and-loves of a free spirit at sea.

Muybridge’s pioneering work in photography formed the foundation of cinema as we know it today, while explosive events in his personal life led to the last verdict of justifiable homicide recorded in America. Framed around his single-minded pursuit of creating motion with static imagery, driven by his explosive ego and the neglect of his young wife, this is an intriguing, stylised portrayal of a man whose brilliance and ambition were equalled only by the destructive power of his own self-interest.

After a group of friends in a Jerusalem retirement home find themselves pressured into assisting the suicide of a very ill companion, word quickly spreads about what they have done, and they are soon pestered by many people requesting the same service. While the morality of what they are asked to do is likely to be as divisive for the audience as the culprits, the warm heart to the proceedings is never in doubt.

Cast: Michael Eklund, Sara Canning, Christopher Heyerdahi, Jodi Balfour, Torrance Coombs

The ‘journeys’ that Alice (a wonderfully free-spirited Ariane Labed) sets off on are physical, sexual and emotional. She has become a sailor – working as a mechanic on freighters – not necessarily to see the world, but rather to find herself. When she boards the rickety Fidelio as a last-minute replacement for a crew member killed in an accident, she finds the captain is her former lover, Gael (Melvil Poupaud). Labed won the best actress award at the Locarno Film Festival for her performance.

An enthralling drama from a true Iranian icon. Internationally-celebrated actor, writer, and director (and EIFF juror in 2014) niki Karimi returns to a subject close to her heart: the relationship between men and women in her native Iran. In this tense family drama, we see a young wife and mother start to unravel when she interprets her husband’s strange behaviour as proof that he might be plotting against her. Traditional protocols fuelled by growing anxiety prevent her from broaching the subject with him directly, resulting in a slow drift through growing unease into abject paranoia. The beautifully observed plot gently twists and turns, remaining utterly gripping right through to its final revelation.

An astute and compassionate family drama with an edge. Illness and the harsh strains of the crumbling Japanese economy combine to push an ordinary family to the very edge in Yûya Ishii’s absorbing drama. The director (who made The Great Passage and Sawako Decides) presents an ordinary suburban family dealing with the illness of matriarch Reiko (Mieko harada)… but her sudden illness is really a catalyst to other financial issues, family relationships and long-hidden secrets. An austere and provocative delve into modern Japan.

Cinema can change our lives.

In the late 1970s, from a tenement flat in Edinburgh, Bob Last and Hilary Morrison operated their record label Fast Product. A predecessor to Rough Trade and Factory Records, it became the hub for a group of ground-breakingly talented musicians. In 1980s Communist Romania, subversion of the government’s ideological censorship was quietly underway via the black-market import of thousands of hollywood films. An underground vhS smuggling operation was secretly giving ordinary people a glimpse into life beyond the Iron Curtain: a world of fearless action stars like Chuck norris and Jean-Claude van Damme. Responsible for this videotheque resistance was a wealthy opportunistic hustler and an intrepid female translator determined to bring the power of cinema to the people.

Film-maker David nicholas Wilkinson heads off on a mission to reveal the story of Louis Aimé Augustine Le Prince’s pioneering work. Once he perfected his projection machine, he arranged to demonstrate his discovery in America. But on 16 September 1890, just weeks before he was due to sail to new York, he stepped onto the Dijon-Paris train and was never seen again. no body was ever found, so legally no one could fight the Le Prince claim to his invention.

Bill Drummond’s idiosyncratic approach to the music industry has been well documented. Along with long-term collaborator Jimmy Cauty, his aversion to recordings of his work in any form, and his will to destroy them - including the deletion of the lucrative KLF back catalogue, their infamous appearance at the Brit Awards, and a certain bonfire involving a million quid - are the stuff of rock music legend. A smart and insightful delve into comedy.

A strong-minded Bedouin woman fights against tradition.

See all of life on this thundering train ride through modern-day China. Eavesdrop on conversations about class, the environment, race and more whilst witnessing insightful moments between both the passengers and the staff, that are often humorous and always surprising. The Iron Ministry is a fullblown sensory experience that refuses to be ignored. Raw, stunning, impressionistic, chaotic and unforgettable.

Actor Kevin Pollak steps behind the camera to ask a few simple questions of folks he knows in the comedy game. Why do they do it, and do you need to be miserable to be funny? It makes for entertaining stuff as more than 60 top talents reveal some home truths about the dark and the funny side of the business of comedy. The roster includes the likes of Tom Hanks, Penn Jillette, Jimmy Fallon, Judd Apatow, Steve Coogan and Larry David. Though, as William H Macy astutely says: “I wouldn’t do stand-up with a gun to my head”.

An enjoyable insight into the life of Fatima Ali Al hameli, the first Emirati woman to enter her camels into the UAE’s prestigious camel beauty pageant and to battle to take part in the Abu Dhabi camel auctions. She is a wonderfully determined soul, driven by fierce determination and a gritty charm. The film flits between auctions and pageants, her amusing visits to a beauty salon (she is on the phone most of the time) and her delightful relationship with her loyal – and often bemused – Sudanese camel-wrangler Mohammed.

Editor-in-chief Poul Madsen allows full access as the paper goes through redundancies, the launch of its online edition and criticism of its coverage of the Danish hostage crisis in Somalia that ended in 2013. The debut film from Australian actor Damon Gameau, who sets out to expose (in true Morgan Spurlock style) how much sugar we consume without even realising it. Rather than improving life for the world’s poorest people, however, billions of dollars have been redirected to British companies’ tax havens and to local militia. Fuelling a war that has cost 5 million lives and counting since 1996, it may one day come to be known as the worst human atrocity in modern history. Can we stop it? Brilliant Chinese action-adventure.

Zombies, zombies and some more zombies.

A superbly stylish period action wuxia romp that favours thrilling up-close fight scenes over overused wire work, Lu Yang’s astute, complex and colourful period film sees a trio of sword-wielding imperial assassins take on the Ming dynasty’s evil secret police. These mismatched heroes are driven (unusually) by personal greed rather than honour, but it sets the scene for a film rich in beautifully choreographed fight sequences and brutal action as their ‘brotherhood’ pits them against killers and assassins.

A slick and bloodily amusing film spin-off from the Dead Rising video game, set in the fictional city of East Mission, Oregon, where the authorities have created Zombrex, a vaccine that delays the effects of the infection. In the middle of the zombie mayhem is reporter Chase Carter (Jesse Metcalfe, Desperate Housewives), who teams with kick-ass Crystal O’Rourke (an impressive Meghan Ory) to fend off the walking dead and also try and escape the closed-down city. A strong cast also includes virginia Madsen and Dennis Haysbert.

THU 25 JUNE 23:00 FILMhOUSE 1 FRI 26 JUNE 20:45 ODEOn PRICE: £10.00 (£8.00 COnCS) Spectacular adaptation of Japanese bodysnatcher manga. A slick and stylish, special-effects driven version of the popular manga, Takashi Yamazaki’s wonderfully crazy film follows the misadventures of Tokyo teenager Shinichi Izumi (Shota Sometani), who has to try and co-exist with a mutant parasite that takes control of his right arm. Meanwhile, more evil-minded parasites start causing havoc, and this bumbling teen (and the parasite that he names ‘Righty’) must try and stop the alien invasion. Part horror and part superhero buddy story, it is a wild movie ride.

SAT 20 JUNE 18:30 CInEWORLD MON 22 JUNE 20:55 CInEWORLD PRICE: £10.00 (£8.00 COnCS) You’ll believe a fist can fly. Enter Chilean martial arts expert Marko Zaror as “Pardo”, an ex-hitman turned vigilante seeking redemption for his sins by taking on a vicious drug cartel and facing deadly assassin “The Scorpion”. Co-ordinating the unbelievably fast, brutal fight sequences, as well as partaking in them, Zaror works without the aid of wires or CGI, and the results are breathtaking. This explosive action is harnessed in style by director Ernesto Díaz Espinoza, and confirms Zaror’s place as one of the most exciting exponents of the martial arts in international cinema today.

A post-apocalypse action-horror romp viewed as if made in the 1980s, Turbo Kid is a gleefully bloody fantasy film. It is 1997 after the apocalypse, and self-styled Turbo Kid (Munro Chambers) rides a BMX bike through slagheaps and dresses himself in a hero costume. When he meets and helps imperiled platinum blonde Apple (Laurence Leboeuf), they find themselves up against a vicious bike-riding gang. Imagine Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone meets BMX Bandits, but with more gore.

ANIMATION INTRO Our Animation strand continues to champion the risk takers and technical masters of the art form and features exciting new work and rarely-seen retrospective gems from across the world. As well as our usual focus on shorts, both British and International, this year’s programme features not one, but two Masters of Animation: Ralph Bakshi and Barry Purves. The McLaren Award for Best new British Animation continues into its 26th year, and is once again generously supported by the British Council; meanwhile we are also honoured to welcome our old friends Disney Pixar back to Edinburgh with their wonderful new feature Inside Out.

A special in-person event celebrating the 60th birthday of one of Britain’s eminent animators. Barry Purves is one of the UK’s outstanding animation directors, with a career spanning 25 years, an awards cabinet bursting with over 60 international awards (including Bafta and Oscar nominations) and as many lifetime achievement awards as a cat has lives. Equally passionate about his theatre work, Barry’s films embrace the language of stage and his world-wide teaching on animation enhances his reputation as a raconteur. This event promises to be a revealing insight into the creative process of an artist.

FRI 26 JUNE 20:40 FILMhOUSE 2 PRICE: £7.00 (£5.00 COnCS) A trippy, anti-establishment animation which still shocks forty years after its making. This subversive counter-culture feature marks Ralph Bakshi’s directing debut. Based on Robert Crumb’s underground comics from the 60s this film remains the most commercially successful independent animated feature ever made. It famously has the distinction of being the first animated film to be given an X-rating, due to its political content, sexual imagery and depiction of drug use. We are delighted to announce that director Ralph Bakshi will join us on Skype after the screening! (Definitely not suitable for children)

SAT 27 JUNE 15:45 FILMhOUSE 2 PRICE: £7.00 (£5.00 COnCS)

Our first round-up of the best contemporary British animation.

This year’s selection of international animation features some of the best auteur films released over this past year, taking in shorts from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Estonia, Germany and Ireland. A startling variety of drawn, stop-motion and CGI techniques are represented. The line-up features the UK premiere of Ernie Biscuit by Oscar-winner Adam Elliot, whose feature Mary and Max was a highlight of our 63rd edition.

Before Peter Jackson, there was Ralph Bakshi’s ambitious translation of Tolkien.

Animation continues to startle and innovate, as this first collection of exemplary UK animation demonstrates. Our first installation is loosely themed around ‘life cycles’, with many shorts exploring animation’s unique ability to interpret and bend time to examine key moments of life experience. Amongst the premieres presented are a eulogy to puppets by BAFTAwinner Ainslie henderson, and a bizarre invasion of Edinburgh in Owen Rixon’s highly anticipated Toonocalypse.

FRESH CUT GRASS

Ralph Bakshi undertook the enormous challenge of bringing JRR Tolkien’s book to the screen as faithfully as he could, with hand-drawn animation and extensive use of rotoscoping (the translation of live-action footage into illustrative form). Folklore maintains that this is an unfinished film, but the confusion has arisen due to its depicting Tolkien’s first book, and the distributer’s reluctance to title it ‘Part 1’, with the perception that audiences would not pay to see half a film.

WED 24 JUNE 20:30 FILMhOUSE 2 PRICE: £7.00 (£5.00 COnCS)

From the sublime to the silly, this collection of outstanding UK-produced animation is a tour-de-force of talent. It is tempting to describe the selection as introspective, as many directors look inwards examining the culture and consumption of animation. But for every post-modern conundrum, there are joyous extrapolations of other ideas. All films in McLaren Award programmes are eligible for this year’s prize, voted on by you: the audience!

LOST SANDS

Ralph Bakshi defies Fritz the Cat established expectations with his first family film. In a post-apocalyptic world, following a terrorist attack, technology has been lost and abandoned, allowing magical forces to resurface on earth. But the evil wizard Blackwolf uncovers machines invented by the nazis in WWII, and turns them on his enemies. The film was disadvantaged during its cinema release in 1977, due to Star Wars being released two weeks after; both films feature a then-unknown Mark Hamill.

STRAND PREMIERE

A brother and sister’s rite-of-passage road trip across the parched Mexican landscape. When teenagers Omar and Karina’s mother suffers a stroke, they set off across Mexico to visit their grandmother. Their journey exposes them to people and situations they are ill-equipped to deal with, and tensions run high as they contend with a complex, unforgiving adult world. Social divisions, unrest and violence are evidenced in the world around them in a multi-layered, naturalistic tale of the bonds of family and the intricacies of Mexican society.

A sexually-charged, grown-up study of infidelity, discontent and regeneration. Unhappily married Igor and struggling single mother Pina work together at a photocopier factory in Mexico. Their sudden, raw lust for one another serves as a catalyst for upheaval in their relatively mundane, unfulfilled lives, leading to a shocking dénouement. This is elegant, powerful cinema, offering a bleak and brutally honest portrayal of the complexities of human relationships, and the often destructive power of sexual attraction. An electrifying collection of shorts that represent the exciting thematic range and ambition inherent in contemporary Mexican filmmaking. Fearlessly fixing the camera upon themes and issues central to the experience of what it means to be a participant in Mexican society today, Mirroring Mexico juxtaposes satirical and factual responses to the global financial crisis, approaches questions of cultural acceptance of queer identity, vividly evokes the trials of teenage years and humorously interrogates the cultural preoccupation with the rituals surrounding death.

SUN 21 JUNE 16:25 FILMhOUSE 2 SUN 28 JUNE 13:40 FILMhOUSE 3 PRICE: £10.00 (£8.00 COnCS) “The ‘Tirisia’ is the death of spirit, it is life detained, it is one step from dying...” In an isolated village in Oaxaca, two women pregnant by the same man (Gustavo Sánchez Parra - Amores Perros) now face incomprehension and rejection by their families and neighbours. In a surreal place dominated by a deserted landscape of poetic giant cacti, the ‘Tirisia’ (‘perpetual sadness’) takes control of people’s souls, leading to complex consequences. Striking cinematography imbues this well-acted and atmospheric drama with a strong and memorable aesthetic.

BLACk BOx INTRO Black Box plunges into the innovative and thought-provoking world of experimental and artists’ film – from abstract to documentary, from celluloid to digital, and from the quietly contemplative to the perceptually immersive. This year the four shorts programmes converge around the interconnecting themes of environmental crisis, performance, dream states and experiential awakenings, whilst the two features focus on expedition and exploration. Telemach Wiesinger’s kaleidoscopic travelogue complements Félix Dufour-Laperrière’s breathtaking transatlantic journey aboard a cargo ship. To round this all up, Black Box Live returns for a third year of audiovisual performance at the Traverse Theatre – a cine-concert with the Dead Rat Orchestra.

Expanding notions of performance through the material, the spatial, the personal and the relational.

On the edge of narrative, at the limits of consciousness.

An immersive cine-concert that combines the artistry of film with the craft of music. The third instalment of Black Box Live expands into a special combination of the analogue film images of James holcombe and the unique folk sounds of the Dead Rat Orchestra, who will perform a live accompaniment. The film tells the story of the Tyburn gallows, where, for over 700 years, those who fell foul of the state were executed for public entertainment and instruction. Archival material, rendered though artisanal film techniques, meets moving ballads and musical laments.

CRITICAL SPACE NEEDS AFFECTION

Displaying a wide range of technical and conceptual approaches, the films in this programme question the role and nature of performance beyond the strictly theatrical. not acting but acting out in ways that force us to see, experience and understand things differently. Here, performance sets up critical relations between people and places, and weaves a complex fabric of fluid and interchanging selves. What is performance and, most importantly, what isn’t?

Environmental issues give rise to formal investigations – what’s the matter?

Patterns, repetitions, distortions and reflections: a kaleidoscope of perceptual stimulation.

By land, air and sea: an audio-visual travelogue in twenty-one chapters.

This thought-provoking programme of films deals with issues of environmental decline and the relationship between nature and industry. Taking up a range of political and aesthetic positions, each of these works deals with the impact of scientific development on bodies and landscapes. Gasometers, geothermal and nuclear power stations, electromagnetic hypersensitivity, Arctic glaciers in free fall, and the delicate choreography of wind farms provide rich material for these formal investigations. What price progress?

how does form inflect experience and how can experience be translated through form? The eight films featured here revolve around questions of perception and the capacity of film to capture and elicit elusive states beyond or between the lines of linguistic description. Oscillating between the contemplative and the overwhelming, between forms of seeing and forms of feeling, these films transport us from escalator rides to mountain trips, and from radio prayer requests to near-death experience.

Black Box regular Telemach Wiesinger returns to Edinburgh to premiere another idiosyncratic, feature-length film poem. Weaving together numerous journeys across Europe and north America, and shot in his signature deadpan style, Wiesinger opens up a wondrous world of movements and structures. This heady adventure of discovery is brought together by an innovative soundtrack that envelopes the black-andwhite 16mm images in a kaleidoscope of contemporary musical compositions and abstract sounds.

Five hypnotic works that partake in a collaborative dialogue drawn across time, memory and space. Collectively, veritable dreamscape of images that variously draw parallels between discarded and degraded celluloid film, and recollections that gently slip away or distort with time; investigate the secret language of found artifacts and ask how we can begin to untangle the concept of physical space as a repository for memories.

Four distinct and powerful works that mix and question identity and physicality and the interplay of connection, control and social pressures upon our mental landscapes. The pivotal concern spiralling through these films is the unearthing of the means to operate as an autonomous individual within a society in which protagonists are internal exiles, whether by dint of institutional, legal, social or political status.

A visual rollercoaster through the narratives of a cast of characters whose experiences are anything but humdrum!

Shorts from the film academies.

The intoxicating combination of the visceral and the intangible, the spiritual and the earthly.

A spiritual missionary engaged in the bizarre practice of human ‘particle realignment’, and the surreal road-trip encounters of a peripatetic, thirteen-year-old vacuum cleaner salesman, jostle alongside wild and thrilling tales of precociously talented and headstrong youth. Plus a stirring documentary charting the victorious achievements brought about by community guerrilla activism in Glasgow.

Students from the University of Edinburgh’s MSc Film, Exhibition and Curation course present a programme of short films showcasing the best emerging work from the UK film academies: Screen Academy Scotland, national Film & Television School and the London Film School. The productions range from observational documentary to delightfully dark animation, exploring comical, painful and poignant reflections on getting older and staying young at heart.

Weaving through terrains that fuse the cerebral, physical and transcendent, illuminated here are manifestations of film as a means for charting and communicating, visually and sensorially-expressions of ritual, folklore and transformation. This enchanting spell drifts through a mosaic layering of Trinidadian superstition and spirit beliefs, pursues the restless motion of a Haitian carnival, documents an esoteric English fire ritual, and witnesses an astonishing spiritual transition in which nourishment is drawn solely from the environment.

MAMIHLAPINATAPAI

The works inhabiting this programme map the complex interlacing of elements that formulate our individual orbits: the personal invention and performance of ‘self’, interpersonal exchanges, and spontaneous explorations within the sphere of identity. Investigations of the tension between sexuality and the post-modern landscape are juxtaposed with alternative models of thinking and being, and we are immersed in the anarchic activities of a trio of teenage tearaways.

Interrogating the electric tensions existing between the emotiona, and rational, ethical and political within a post-modern societal landscape in constant agitation, these engaging shorts pulsate with ruminative questions. how does surveillance relate to personal autonomy? What impact has popular culture upon one’s self- image? And just how ethically sound is scientific advancement?

EDUCATION AND LEARNING The Edinburgh International Film Festival offers children and young people many opportunities to enjoy and learn more about film. What you may not know is that, year-round, the Centre for the Moving Image (CMI), EIFF’s parent company and a registered charity, provides the same opportunities at Filmhouse and Belmont Filmhouse Aberdeen through screenings, workshops and in-depth learning programmes. Like the weekly Filmhouse Junior programme for families, FilmFest Junior offers family audiences some of the best new international films for children. Some of these titles, and others from the EIFF programme, will be available for local schools to attend. Younger audiences are often the most enthusiastic, so whenever possible we invite filmmakers to come and discuss their films – which often provokes hundreds of questions from the young people! Our long-running Media Days delve a little deeper, offering those studying Media the chance to speak to a range of filmmakers and other creative industry practitioners. Moving image education is increasingly important in the digital age, and the screenings, courses and youth programmes provided by CMI develop understanding and appreciation of film. By offering insight into the film industry, particularly during EIFF, young people develop knowledge of routes into film careers. A young person may attend a schools screening or workshop, or indeed have their own film screened at EIFF as part of the Edinburgh Schools Film Competition; film screenings support curriculum learning, particularly for modern languages; and the EIFF Youth Hub offers inspiration in the form of filmmakers and careers advice. CMI also run the Young Programmers and Student Critics Jury (supported by James and Morag Anderson) programmes, where young people are entrusted to work closely with the Festival and develop skills in curation, film criticism, writing and presentation, as well as building confidence and personal connections. Film has the power to inspire, inform and entertain, and CMI works to identify films which will engage younger people, encouraging a life-long interest in film. LITTLE BIG SCREEN INTRO As we enjoy the new cinematic style of the best American television, the dividing lines between the big screen and the small screen continue to blur. With massive franchises growing to span both mediums, and pay-perview “box sets” offering narrative scope far beyond the confines of feature film duration, it’s no wonder that acclaimed and experienced film directors now move happily between the two. Slowly but surely, American television has increased its currency, and is now capable of staging an “event” that rivals the excitement and publicity of a major cinema release This has happened before. In the late ‘60s and ‘70s, films made for television in the U.S. were similarly regarded as important “events”, some even gaining theatrical release. This strand takes an affectionate look back at a selection of the most significant titles from that era, celebrating the cream of the first golden age of American Tv movies.

Probably the most famous title in this strand, Steven Spielberg’s directorial feature debut is outstanding. Featuring a captivating central performance from Dennis Weaver, this boldly executed, deeply unsettling thriller follows a lone motorist caught in a nightmarish game of cat and mouse with a monstrous lorry and its unseen driver. Employing a visual style more commonly associated with the big screen, Spielberg broke the Tv movie mould as he shot Duel, establishing himself as a talent to watch and securing the film a richly deserved theatrical release.

Director Michael Mann’s Emmy-winning feature debut tells the story of a long term convict (Peter Strauss) whose exceptional prowess as a runner takes him, against all odds, to the edge of Olympic selection. Focusing on an incredible physical performance from Strauss, Mann daringly ensured the surrounding air of authenticity by shooting the film on location in Folsom Prison, integrating real inmates into the action. The result is one of the finest American prison movies of the era. Print courtesy of BFI National Archive

The highest-rated American Tv movie of its time and now rightfully regarded as a cult classic, John Llewellyn Moxey’s stylish, atmospheric horror revolves around an iconic lead performance from the brilliant Darren McGavin as Carl Kolchak, a down-atheel journalist doggedly tracking a vampire through the neon-lit streets of late-night Las vegas. The character proved so popular that he subsequently returned in another Tv movie and a weekly Tv show, but neither could equal the cool tension of Moxey’s influential original.

Following the problematic Major Dundee and his departure from The Cincinnati Kid, director Sam Peckinpah found himself out of favour in hollywood. Accepting an offer to direct for ABC television, he reversed his fortune by delivering this long-lost masterpiece starring Jason Robards and Olivia de Havilland. Adapted by Peckinpah from a short story by Katherine Anne Porter, it’s a wonderful, moving drama which reveals a side of the legendary director that is all too rarely seen. Applying his movie-making techniques to the production, it revitalised his career at a crucial juncture, winning the critical acclaim that would facilitate his return to the big screen with his iconic western, The Wild Bunch. WALTEr HILL: THE EArLY YEArS INTRO With this year’s other retrospective strand highlighting significant American television movies of the late ‘60s and ‘70s, it’s time to renew EIFF’s fond acquaintance with a director whose early career unfolded, in extraordinary fashion, during exactly the same era. With credits on such classics as The Thomas Crown Affair, The Getaway, Alien and Aliens; and writer/director of such highly influential films as The Driver, The Warriors and 48 Hrs; the multi-talented Walter Hill is truly one of the greats. In 1984, EIFF screened Hill’s Streets of Fire, and he was here in person. Therefore, with history in mind, this strand takes us chronologically through the complete catalogue of Hill’s directorial work up to that point. The resulting unbroken run of astonishing, essential American cinema revisits films that graced EIFF and celebrates a remarkable filmmaker once again.

A cocky convict (Eddie Murphy) and a cantankerous cop (nick nolte) are forced into partnership, working against the clock to catch an escaped killer (James Remar) and recover a stolen fortune. Pairing Murphy with the gruff nolte proved to be a masterstroke, and Hill capitalised fully on this casting coup, skilfully revolving his exceptional thriller around their memorable chemistry and making Murphy a star in the process.

An expert getaway driver (Ryan O’neal) plays a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an arrogant detective (Bruce Dern) who will go to any lengths to catch him. Enhanced by Philip H Lathrop’s stunning cinematography and an unforgettable performance from Dern, hill’s most obviously influential film is a neo-noir tour-de-force featuring some of the most stylish, thrilling car chase sequences ever shot.

During the depression, a bare-knuckle boxer (Charles Bronson) drifts into town and enters into an increasingly dangerous partnership with a self-destructive fight promoter (James Coburn). With Bronson rising to the rigorous physical challenges of hill’s explosive fight sequences, and Coburn skilfully deploying his trademark sparkle, Hill’s directorial debut is a classic that clearly signalled his arrival as a major new talent, and gave Bronson one of the finest roles of his career.

The story of legendary outlaws The James Gang.

On a training exercise in the Louisiana bayou, a group of national Guards find themselves fighting for survival after crossing swords with a gang of local hunters. Assisted by another atmospheric Ry Cooder score, Hill brings the bayou to life with terrific performances from the likes of Keith Carradine, Powers Boothe, Fred Ward, Peter Coyote and Brion James, hill delivers a violent, deeply unsettling master class in cinematic tension.

Featuring outstanding work from his unique ensemble cast (four sets of actual brothers: James and Stacy Keach; David, Keith and Robert Carradine; Randy and Dennis Quaid; and Christopher and nicholas Guest), an exceptional score from Ry Cooder, and some absolutely breathtaking action sequences (his expert use of slow motion is memorably displayed here); hill’s first true western is a brutal, haunting masterpiece.

Lose yourself under the lustre of the glitterball…

Trapped below, trapped above.

A rare screening of the cult 1981 big cat movie.

Crafted closely from then-recent events, The Brave Don’t Cry was undoubtedly John Grierson’s greatest post-war production. Its finely-honed documentary realism builds with almost explosive tension as a group of entombed Scottish miners hold out for the teams who fight to rescue them, as their wives (including the enthralling Meg Buchanan) stand watch at the pithead. Drawing dramatic power from the honest, harsh realities of 1950s working-class life, the film screens here in commemoration of the end, 30 years ago, of the 1984-85 miners’ strike.

A bizarre and completely off-kilter actionadventure, Roar is the sole film made by noel Marshall, and stars him and his wife Tippi Hedren (star of Hitchcock’s The Birds) along with Hedren’s real-life daughter Melanie Griffith and his two real-life sons, as a family under attack by lions, jaguars and tigers. Recently re-released in the US, Drafthouse Films founder Tim League hails it as “the most epic and amazing animal thriller ever made”, with the cast and crew in constant danger and more than 70 of them injured during its lengthy production.

In 1998, Mark Christopher’s 54 was released to a lukewarm response. However, this was not the film the director wanted you to see... This version now re-cut to his original vision, explores the seedy world of nYC’s infamous Studio 54 as seen through the eyes of young buck Shane O’Shea. Backed by a sublime soundtrack and with standout early performances from Ryan Phillippe and Salma hayek, this decadent flick brings the hedonistic 1970s back to life.

CLASSICS The Taking of Pelham One Two Three Joseph Sargent/USA/1974/104 min Cast: Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam, Hector Elizondo FRI 19 JUNE 18:05 FILMhOUSE 2 PRICE: £7.00 (£5.00 COnCS) Having directed several notable American Tv movies during the period in focus, including The Marcus-Nelson Murders and the much loved The Night That Panicked America, the late Joseph Sargent (1925-2014) should have featured in this year’s Little Big Screen strand, but the availability and rights issues surrounding these titles proved insurmountable. As it would be unthinkable not to acknowledge the acclaimed Sargent in that context, we are presenting instead this special retrospective screening of his most popular big screen outing. Famously referenced by Tarantino in Reservoir Dogs, Sargent’s cult classic sees an armed gang hijack a new York subway train full of commuters, forcing a downbeat transit cop (Walter Matthau) into a battle of wits with their wily leader (Robert Shaw). Briefly turning his expert attention from television to cinema, Sargent delivered one of the definitive thrillers of the era, boasting powerhouse performances from Matthau and Shaw, and an unforgettably cool score by David Shire.

The Third Man Carol Reed/UK/1949/104 min Cast: Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles, Trevor Howard SUN 21 JUNE 14:10 FILMhOUSE 1 PRICE: £7.00 (£5.00 COnCS) Restored version of Carol Reed’s classic film. Beautifully remastered and looking as glorious as when it was first released, this 1949 classic stars Joseph Cotten as pulp novelist holly Martins, who travels to post-war vienna and starts to investigate the mysterious death of his old friend, black-marketeer Harry Lime. Memorable thanks to the famous first glimpse of Lime (Orson Welles), Robert Krasker’s black-and-white cinematography, the chase through the sewers, the cuckoo clock speech, and Anton Karas’ zither music.
