FRANSCHHOEK: COUNTRY LIVING AT ITS BEST
Best country lifestyle in Cape Winelands Picturesque Cape Winelands homes offer the best country lifestyle with close-by city conveniences, says Marianne van der Merwe of Seeff Franschhoek.
buyers increasingly heading here, says Van der Merwe. Since early last year, about 70 properties worth more than R200 million were sold here, of which 26 (or 40%) were sold by Seeff. This includes five sales above the R5 million mark. The most recent high-value sales include two homes sold by Van der Merwe at R6,3 million and R9,9 million respectively; the latter being one of the highest residential prices
Most city dwellers will tell you that they yearn for a country lifestyle, but giving up the work and conveniences on offer in the big metropolitan areas is almost impossible. Marianne argues that this switch is highly do-able. Franschhoek’s proximity to Cape Town for example. means that before you even really hit traffic, you are already in the city and, it is a lovely country drive, she says. Postcard-pretty mountains, rolling vineyards and clean air make it one of the most beautiful wine valleys in the world and with quality real estate on offer, it is one of the most sought-after addresses in the country, she says. The growth in property values attests to this, says Seeff Winelands principal, Pierre Germishuys. The average house price has grown by almost 170%, from just over R1,2 million in 2004, to almost R3,3 million today, while luxury homes sell for well above this. Sectional title sales prices have grown by 80% from just over R600 000 to over R1,1 million. Buyers from across the globe continue to flock to the village and more than 80% of buyers are still from outside Franschhoek. While foreign interest has increased in the last year, the majority of buyers are from the greater Joh’burg area, with Durban La Ferme Chantelle, Franschhoek

achieved in the village in the past few years. Whether you choose to make it your permanent residence, weekend getaway or property investment destination, few locations compare, she says. Aside from the top class gastronomy, boutiques and art and décor stores, the valley is of course home to some of the oldest and most prestigious wine estates in the country such as Haute

It is located on the northern side of the village on the site of one of the original farms, Bloekomhof and comprises a 19 ha, low density development that enjoys stunning mountain views and close to the village centre. There are 28 plots in the estate; each with an area of about 1 200 m², while the estate enjoys top class security with controlled access. Property values in the estate have more than doubled over the past five years, up from R3 million to around R7,9 million now, but range up to around R11,8 million for a spacious, 720 m², double-storey thatched home with lovely open-rafter ceilings, fireplaces, chandeliers and a beautifully landscaped garden with water features and a swimming pool. The home offers two living areas. On the lower level is an open-plan lounge and dining room divided by a double-sided Morso fireplace, a modern kitchen and a wine cellar with an unusual barrel-vaulted ceiling. The second open-plan lounge/studio area on the upper level includes a library and gas fireplace and opens to a balcony with stunning views. There are four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms; the main with a fireplace and separate dressing room. The property also includes staff accommodation and a double garage. Cabriere, La Motte, Backsberg, Boschendal, Graham Beck and many more, says Van der Merwe. While a wine farm will set you back by several million, there is another unique option of leading a winelands lifestyle without having to invest in a wine farm. Residential vineyard estates such as La Ferme Chantelle for example offer stunning homes set amid vineyards and olive groves.

’n Besoeker

MOTORING: SONATA UPDATE
Powerful new 2.4 GDi engine and facelift for Hyundai Sonata QUICKPIC
H
yundai’s Sonata – which led the way for the brand’s “fluidic design” in its passenger range in South Africa – has received a more powerful, fuel-efficient engine and a fresh appearance, lifting the levels of refinement of the flagship sedan in the local Hyundai range to a higher level. The new 2,4 F Gasoline Direct Injection engine in the Hyundai Sonata 2.4 GDi Elite automatic not only raises maximum power from 131 kW to 148 kW, but also creates a smooth, fuel-efficient drivetrain with the automatic six-speed box. With a fresh new grille, front bumper, headlights and fog lights, new wheels, exterior side-mirrors and reworked rear lights, the Sonata retains its place as the flagship sedan of Hyundai Automotive SA’s passenger car range. Several other product enhancements – among others a new sound system with touch-screen display in the centre console – have been added in the interior. “The Sonata was already a very elegant, well-designed sedan that was the choice of many buyers who were looking for a modern premium motoring package at a very competitive price. The new engine and subtle changes to its exterior looks, coupled with the changes on the extensive list of specifications, have enhanced this excellent offer of Hyundai in South Africa even more. “It is important to note that this new Sonata is not just a facelift – the
designers have added some very sensible ‘product enhancements’ to the exterior as well as the interior,” says Stanley Anderson, marketing director of Hyundai Automotive, South Africa. Hyundai has taken on the premium sedan segment in South Africa in 2010 with the sixth generation Sonata – an upmarket product that does not stray from the company’s core focus on value for money. The trade-mark “Fluidic Sculpture” design language created a sedan with graceful curves and lines, aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The Sonata also has a spacious and open cabin environment for outstanding occupant comfort and enjoyment. Its high-quality tactile interior fabric and its ergonomical layout of instruments fit in with its modern premium status. To all this, Hyundai has now added a powerful new 148 kW direct petrol injection engine with an advanced and efficient combustion process. It creates a happy union with the smooth and responsive sixspeed transaxle automatic gearbox, developed in-house by the Hyundai Motor Company. The gearshift pattern and layout in the centre console have been changed to fit the stylish nature of the Sonata. As in the previous model, gearshifts can still be done manually by means of the paddles mounted on the steering wheel, or with the gear lever. The exterior treatment of the new Sonata includes new fog lights in the front bumper, a redesigned grille with more flowing lines, and the addition of front Park Distance Con-

PHOTO: QUICKPIC trol detectors to supplement the existing rear bumper’s Park Distance Control. The xenon headlights, which are standard equipment, have been given more fluid lines, and the redesigned front fog lights include LED running lights. The exterior rearview mirrors are slightly larger, but have been made more aerodynamic to reduce wind resistance and wind noise. Viewed from the side, the new Sonata displays an even neater profile with its new 18-inch alloy wheels (and the spare wheel in the Sonata is still full-sized alloy). The tail lights of the Sonata have LED illumination that shines more
brightly and has been redesigned to form a neater and more harmonious junction with the design lines of the car. A GDi name badge depicting the new engine status is all that appears on the boot lid of the new Sonata, together with the Hyundai logo. With a capacity of 2,4 litres, the new Sonata four-cylinder GDi (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine produces maximum power of 148 kW at 6 300 r/min. and 250 Nm maximum torque at 4 250 r/min., while emitting just 188 g/km of CO² (vs. 195 g/km in the previous model). Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes nine seconds. The new GDi engine’s more efficient combustion process delivers
an improvement of 13% in power and a 10% increase in torque. compared to the previous 2.4 multipoint fuel-injection engine. Fuel economy has been improved by 4% from 8,2 litres per 100 km to 7,9 litres per 100 km in the new Sonata 2.4 GDi Elite. The new Sonata 2.4 GDi Elite sells at R 379 900. The new Sonata comes standard with Hyundai’s five- year Triple Care plan, which includes a five- year/150 000 km manufacturer’s warranty; five years or 150 000 km Roadside Assistance and a service plan which covers service costs for the first five years or 90 000 km. Service intervals are 15 000 km.

Citroën launches C3 charm offensive QUICKPIC Citroen's charming C3 supermini gets even more spunky this month, thanks to a package of changes that adds mechanical zest, visual appeal and enhanced driving pleasure. Mechanical zest comes about via the introduction of a 1,2-litre threecylinder Puretech petrol engine, which combines exceptional efficiency with peppy performance. It replaces the previous 1,4-litre engine and at 60 kW makes six kW or 15 percent more than the larger unit ,yet generates the same amount of torque at lower rpm. Fuel consumption levels can be as low as 4,7 F per 100 km, achieved with a CO² output of a mere 109 grams/km. Emissions are 25 percent lower than the 1,4. The alternative to the triple is the existing 1,6-litre VTi, rated at a useful 88 kW and a user-friendly 160 Nm, which when coupled to the C3’s wind-cheating 0,30 CD and light yet strong construction results in lively performance. For those who prefer the highmileage benefits of a diesel, the C3 is still available with the HDi 90 AIRDREAM engine. This 68 kW/230 Nm 1,6-litre powerplant with micro-hybrid e-HDi technology boasts the most efficient Stop&Start system on the market. Expect CO² emissions as low as 98 g/km, and fuel consumption in the order of 3,7 F per 100 km in mixed driving. As an added bonus, the Puretech 1,2 and 1,6 e-HDi, fall well under the
threshhold for CO² tax, while the 1.6 VTi attracts minimal penalty thanks to a rating of just 136 g/km. The visual appeal of the new C3 is there for all to see: styling is more assertive thanks to bumper-mounted LED daytime running lights on Seduction and Exclusive models, more prominent trademark chevrons that run the width of the nose to reach the inner edges of the headlights, while a deeper front air intake with honeycomb mesh brings it in line with other Citroen models. The impression is of a car which has become more sophisticated and grown-up. From the rear the changes are less obvious, but the chrome eyebrow above the tail light clusters, now with “pockets” for each lighting function, set it apart from its predecessor. A new colour – Ink Blue – expands the choice to six hues. Driving pleasure is closely related to comfort and the new C3 has a cabin even more appealing on a tactile and sensory level – areas where Citroen is proud to continue with its desire to cater for the needs of the heart and not just the head. The famous Zenith roof continues on the exclusive model as an example of “Créative Technologie”, flooding the cabin of flagship models with natural light, while a simple pull action covers the upper reach of the panoramic windscreen for a cosier ambience. Touches of chrome add a distinctive style” while a new dashboard cross strip is finished in Tungsten or Moondust depending on the mod-

Both colours complement the new upholstery, which with three distinct textures combine sportiness with warmth, and support. More liberal use of bright metal finishes highlight specific controls, and staying in the sensory range, Citroen continues to offer an integrated air freshener, so that the nose as well as the eyes and nerve-endings get to enjoy the experience. Says Citroen’s General Manager for Marketing, Grant Bowring, of the mid-year upgrade: “We believe there is no reason why a B-segment supermini shouldn’t have the abili-
ty to excite, and to create an emotional connection with the driver. With these changes it certainly does that, and on an objective level the addition of the 1,2-litre triple engine is especially significant, as it represents a major step forward in powertrain technology. With a special launch price on this Attraction model of R 149 900, the Citroen C3 remains an exciting and affordable alternative in its segment.” With the ever increasing growth in human and vehicular populations, compact dimensions and exceptional manoeuvrability are criti-

cally important in this segment and it remains a C3 strength. With an overall length of 3,94 metres and a width of 1,72 metres it takes up a minimal amount of road and garage space, yet has a generous 300-litre boot. With a turning circle of 10,2 metres it is perfectly at home in the urban environment, where the ability to execute a two- rather than three-point turn is all-important. Citroen continues with a threetier trim structure, namely Attraction, Seduction and Exclusive, the latter model also available with an automatic transmission rather than the five-speed manual which is the default. Exclusive models can also be ordered with a reverse camera and park distance sensors, and a satellite navigation system for a full-house of convenience features. It comes fitted with an enhanced infotainment package, which links Bluetooth, Aux jack and a USB port – a package jointly known as the Connecting Box. But it isn’t all just about fun and games: the Exclusive boasts six airbags, the Seduction four, and the Attraction a pair. All three spec levels include ABS & EBD, Oba, Isofix, impact-tensioning seatbelts and sideimpact protection. Clean injectors = more km Did you know? The main factors influencing your fuel consumption are the way you drive your vehicle and its mechanical condition. •Regular air filter and oil changes prevent fine dirt particles getting into the engine. autoWORKS recommends servicing your vehicle strictly according to manufacturer specifications. Do not try to clean a filter - blowing out a filter with compressed air or cleaning solutions will just damage the microstructure of the filter paper. allowing more fine sand and dirt particles get into the engine. •Dirty fuel and carbon accumulation in your engine results in fuel-injector blockage and leaks, causing high fuel consumption and a noticeable decrease in the performance of your vehicle. In the long run carbon accumulation can damage the injectors and possibly the engine itself. An injector clean-up every 100 000 km can prevent this. •Your vehicle injectors play a vital role
in improving performance and reducing fuel consumption. It’s recommended that you have injectors cleaned at least every 100 000 km, or the moment you notice any uneven idling or smoking. •Injector repairs can be a very costly procedure, as it requires the injectors to be removed from the engine, cleaned on a work bench, and costed individually. •If they are too clogged up or damaged, the injectors may have to be replaced, which is a large expense, even more so with a modern diesel engine. •autoWORKS brings you the latest innovation in cleaning vehicle injectors without removing them from the vehicle. The latest technology in injector cleaning allows the cleaning of your vehicle’s injectors at a fraction of the cost, without even removing them. •autoWORKS will clean your vehicle’s injectors in an hour or less for only R995. Make an appointment at any autoWORKS branch and let us take care of you!
