KOELENHOF: NEDBANK BACKING FOR THIS DEVELOPMENT

Lifestyle village at Nooitgedacht

N

edbank Corporate Property Finance has approved a loan to Koelpark Development (Pty) Ltd for the first phase of the Nooitgedacht Village, which offers a fully-integrated community lifestyle in the Western Cape growth node of Stellenbosch. “Our loan will fund the construction, infrastructure and marketing costs for phase one of Nooitgedacht Village. It’s a great investment in a prime location, offering a comprehensive mixed-use development in the heart of the winelands,” says Richard Thomas, regional executive: Nedbank Corporate Property Finance, Cape. Koelpark is represented by the Wirth family which has owned the Nooitgedacht wine farm in Stellenbosch since 1924. The family bought the Koelpark property next to their wine farm in 1989 and completed the bulk services on the subject property, which included roads, water, sewerage and electricity. The property forms part of the Koelenhof hamlet and a total of 196 000 m² of new zoning rights have been awarded, including business, residential, industrial and open space. The basket of rights awarded will allow them to develop an expansive, fully-integrated lifestyle estate among the vineyards with boutique shops, offices, lifestyle facilities, an equestrian centre, a wine boutique, bakery and retirement village. Phase one is almost sold out and phase two will be launched shortly. Managing director Werner Wirth and attorney Gerhardt Jooste are consulting on behalf of the company and developing the property. Jooste is a well-known and experienced player in the property industry who co-founded property development company Atterbury Cape and has been personally involved in the planning and completion of Kanonberg Estate, La Verona, Bella Rosa, Greenville, Admiral Island, Somerset Value Mart and Tygerberg Office Park, to name but a few. Jooste then started Prosperito which has been involved in the development of Swellenmark

Shopping Centre, The Grand Grahamstown, Bloomingdales Office Park, Fountains Mall, Rosehill Mall and recently Kenako Mall in Port Elizabeth. Thomas continues: “The development has an accompanying positive corporate social investment (CSI) element whereby 350 people who were living as informal settlers on the property have been relocated and their lives radically uplifted in the process. Before moving, 86 families were living in 50 structures with no sanitation or electricity and minimal water points. The Fritz Wirth Trust and the Koelpark Community Initiative have focused on finding suitable solutions for the disadvan-

dacht Village as well as the accompanying CSI factor that has had a positive impact and is directly transforming lives. CSI is a non-negotiable business and ethical imperative for Nedbank and we are acutely aware of our responsibility to contribute towards uplifting the lives of disadvantaged communities in South Africa. “A strong partnership such as this between Nedbank and Koelpark underscores the fact that we remain the market leader in the commercial property finance industry and continue to provide custom-fit financial solutions that benefit and empower all stakeholders,” concludes Thomas.

Each of the families was granted a building subsidy from the government and subsequently 99 houses were built. All the families have moved into their new homes. There is also an established feeding scheme for the children, which is supported by all the owners of the farms in the area.” “Nedbank is proud to be associated with such an expansive development as Nooitge-

Generation Y, the future buyers Although it is the buyers aged between 31 and 45 years old, known as generation X, that are currently driving the property market, Adrian Goslett, CEO of RE/ MAX of Southern Africa, says the younger generation Y buyers are eager to get their foot in the property ownership door and have made their presence felt in certain regions throughout the country already. “It is no secret that today’s conditions are ideal for property investment and while many buyers in the younger generations are finding it challenging to obtain finance, most are putting a higher value on homeownership and aspire to purchase a property of their own,” says Goslett. “Home prices are once again rebounding, unemployment levels among the younger generation are being addressed by government and with low interest rates bonds are more affordable than ever. The result of this is that 2013 is likely to be the year of the first-time buyer. With the next generation coming of age and preparing to take advantage of the current economic conditions which lend themselves to property investment, it is possible that for the first time, generation Y buyers who are aged between 18 and 35 years old, could overtake their generation X predecessors in terms of home buying.” While generation X buyers account for ap-

proximately 18,74 million South African consumers, generation Y account for a much larger demographic of the population, making up around 28,4 million consumers who are now ready to buy. Goslett says that it is expected that the larger generation of buyers will continue to boost the economy and the residential pro-

vity. In Centurion, generation Y account for over half of the recent buyers, while around 36% of recent buyers in Douglasdale are under 30 years old. According to the First National Bank property barometer, first-time buyer activity represented around 23% of the total buying activity in both 2011 and 2012. This is a significant increase from the 15% seen during 2008. In general, 2012 was a better year for the residential real estate market than 2011 and it is expected that the market will continue improving during 2013 with an even higher number of first-time buyers entering the realm of homeownership. According to Goslett, generation Y, or millennial buyers as they are also known, are tech-savvy consumers who have a vast amount of information at their fingertips. As a result, most are aware of the fact that conditions are favourable towards buyers. However, many have been waiting for the market to show more positive signs of reco-

very. Considering the fact that demand for property is now gaining momentum, those who have access to finance are more likely to decide that it is the right time to invest before a full recovery and considerably higher prices. Goslett says that generation Y buyers will change the face of the property market in that they will be a lot more cautious than their parents when investing and will have a more critical eye. “Many generation Y’s have witnessed the effects of the recession and have felt the economic repercussions of that period personally. They have watched the dramatic events of the housing downturn unfold and this has resulted in the typical millennial buyer wanting to safeguard their investments against similar events in the future. “However,” says Goslett, “they have also seen the market turn around and are now more optimistic about the prospect of owning property. While a large number have turned to renting or living with their parents to save money and establish a sound financial footing, many have grown tired of spending money on someone else’s bond and see more sense in paying off their own. The critical step will be for those within the real estate profession to recognise the opportunity the generation Y buyers bring to the market and meet their expectations,” he concludes.

Stable interest rate ‘underscores steady property market ‘ – Samuel Seeff While a rate cut would undoubtedly have been good news for cash-strapped consumers, Seeff chairman, Samuel Seeff, says that the decision by the Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee to keep the interest rate stable at the current level of 5% nonetheless underscores the steady property market fundamentals and sends the right message.

improving demand in the upper income sector, has seen many areas across the country starting to report stock shortages. This is good for the market and will see some improvement in prices, although only marginally, given that the continued economic constraints has put the power in the hands of buyers.

“My sense is that the property market conditions feels a bit like 2002, a period when we also had a weakened currency. We then saw the market trading relatively flat and gathering momentum year-on-year, leading to the boom period up to 2007, but it should be noted that the interest rate was higher. “Smart buyers at that time were able to

“With the growing concerns around the macro-economy, growth, job creation and the upward inflationary pressure driven by basic living, transport and utility price hikes and pressure on the Rand, keeping the interest rate unchanged is the most prudent decision insofar as households are concerned, he says. “We remain of the view that while there is more energy in the market evidenced by improved demand since about mid-2012 and continuing into this year, a conservative outlook remains vital. Home owners need to focus on bringing down their debt levels, maintain their bond repayments and invest any spare cash into their home loans.” Indications are that the banks are reducing the volume of distressed properties on the market and this, along with the healthy demand in the sub-R1,5 million housing sector and

buy relatively cheaply and reaped the reward when they sold smartly during the boom period. The same applies now. Despite the improved demand, prices are still trading relatively flat and this, along with the still historically low interest rate and weak currency, creates the ideal buying conditions, provided that investors and buyers do their homework and buy smart. “Certainly, based on our turnover which is up by around 20% over the same period last year, we believe that the positive market sentiment from last year has carried into this year. Provided that there are no major economic upheavals and that demand remains healthy, 2013 should be a good year for property.” Seeff says that if consumers can manage to bring down their debt levels and improve their credit ratings which would enable the banks to grant more home loans, he anticipates sales volumes would continue to gather momentum until about mid-2014, with some real growth coming through from about 2015 onwards. “This would then take us to the end of an 8-year cycle since the 2007/8 market slump and we can anticipate seeing an upward trajectory towards greatly improved property market conditions that would again lure serious investors.”

How critical is pricing for buyers? Just how important is pricing when it comes to selling your property? Many sellers are tempted to list at a price higher than the market value of their home in the belief that they can always drop their price later if they need to. Therealityisthatbuyersknowwhataproperty is worth within a few minutes of viewing it. Buyers shop by comparison – which means they will look at a number of properties before making a purchasing decision. They weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of each property and have a really good idea of the market value. Buyers respond to the list price and will typically look at properties listed up to 7,5% more than their maximum purchase price, anticipating that some properties may be slightly negoti-

able. What that means is that, if you overprice your property by 20%, you will attract the wrong buyers – buyers who are expecting a home worth more. You will miss out on attracting the right buyers in the correct price range. Pricing is very sensitive. Even being fractionally overpriced could mean that a buyer chooses to negotiate on another property that he perceives offers better value. Time and again it’s been proven that properties sell for the most money when they are correctly priced from the beginning of the listing. Price creates interest. Buyers are attracted to the property, they compete against each other for the property and they make good offers that are in line with market value. So if you are a

Lachenalia, flowering harmony Have you ever wondered what inspired Mike Oldfield to record his iconic 1973 tune Tubular Bells? Musos will say it was his percussion instrument of tubular-bell chimes, but we horticulturists are convinced he was paying tribute to the tubular-bell-shaped Lachenalia, also known as Cape cowslip or wild hyacinth. After all, it’s difficult not to be drawn to dedicate music to our fascinating, cutely shaped indigenous plant. Often bi- or tri-coloured, there are over 120 species of Lachenalia from South Africa and Namibia. Just imagine all of these colours dancing in the wind as if swaying to the sound of Oldfield’s verses, spreading their sweet scent as they rock to and fro. Yes, we’re sure this was his motivation. In fact, viooltjie, another name to which Lachenalia answers, shows that this plant really was meant to have musical followers. The name references the plant’s very own sound symposium – a squeaky violin-like sound that’s heard when two flower stalks are rubbed together. It’s rather easy to grow your own Lachenalia harmony, which will develop a tapering bloom that offers shape to the sound, with a musical score that could last up to five

BAKKIE: MAZDA’S LUXURY ALTERNATIVE?

Mazda’s tough BT50 Freestyle Cab FRANS LE ROUX

B

akkies are as true to our heritage as biltong and braaivleis. We buy them, ride them and then worship their abilities on and off the road.

With our market being swamped with various newcomers, I had a go at Mazda’s new BT50 Freestyle Cab (extended cabin). My test vehicle was the 3.2 5-cylinder diesel which packed a notorious punch in the power department. Mazda uses the same successful chassis and engine variants borrowed from Ford’s amazing Ranger line-up. The 5-pot diesel mill sets the bakkie market alight with its performance figures. Maximum power is an extraordinary 147 kW, while towing or carrying a load is done effortlessly thanks to its 470 Nm. Only Nissan has a more powerful bakkie but it uses a 6-cylinder diesel and costs close to R600 000. With an empty load-bay and carrying no passengers the bakkie easily left a tyre mark on tar even in second gear. On gravel roads things got more interesting as the traction control kept spoiling the fun all the way up to a 100 km/h. Fuel consumption hovered around the 10 l/100 km-mark. Best figures when driving carefully dropped to around 8. Mazda once again went for the luxury-bakkie category and it is evident in their pricing and standard specification level on the BT50’s. Alloy wheels and colour-coded bumpers come standard with most BT-50’s. The Japanese manufacturer also went for a distinctive front design which sets it apart from other dreary-looking competitors. The smiling face in the front does take some time to get used to, but it sure grows on you. At the rear things get more tricky. Mazda went for chrome seethrough tail lights which remind me of something out of a Fast and Furious movie. The interior is certainly a pleasant place to be, with a car-like feel to it. The list of standard specs includes Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control and USB with AUX. This impressive array of gadgets continues with cruise control and steering wheel mounted audio and cell

In the market for a luxury-bakkie? Go and test drive Mazda’s latest offering – the BT-50. phone controls. The seats offer good support while the headroom is excellent. When opening the rear doors you have access to car-like boot space which can easily be used to lock away valuables. To practically explain how large the loadbay is, I decided to do a little test at work. At Paarl Post we normally recycle our newspapers once a week and we use a small Ford Bantam to transport the paper from our office to the recycling company. With a canopy fitted to the Bantam, we can hardly get close to 400 kg of paper in the back – mainly due to the size, weight and the fact that the bakkie is very tiny compared to the BT-50. Without a canopy fitted and the extra loadbay depth we managed to load close on 800 kg of paper in one go. What did this do to the ride and performance? Well, to be honest it enhanced both. The bakkie felt stable and more secure over rough surfaces and even breezed

over speedbumps. The added weight also managed to take away the spontaneous wheel spin. Coming back to the ride quality, new bakkies have recently come to age with independent multi-link rear suspension. Derived from cars and SUV’s alike this change made bakkies more bearable to drive and own. No more teeth-shattering or backbreaking jolts as you drive over speedbumps, but rather a compliant ride we have come to expect when paying close to half-a-million for a bakkie. The steering feel from behind the wheel of a bakkie will never be close to that of a German saloon but, as with the ride quality, things have thankfully progressed. With the abundance of torque available I always knew what the rear wheels were doing but often got confused about where exactly the front wheels were. When fooling around on gravel one tends to poke it with a stick until it bites

without the faintest of warnings. Luckily the driver will get used to the unpredictable and refrain from thinking he might be Giniel de Villiers. Being luxury-orientated, the BT-50 true bakkie rivals include the likes of the VW Amarok and its sibling the Ford Ranger. I do not mention the Hilux, Triton or the Navara due to their age. Priced at R356 700, individuality does not come cheap. If you are in the market for an extended cab bakkie, I would ignore the 3.2 BT-50 and rather save thousands by opting for the 2.2-diesel which would save you more than 50k. If you have the time, consider test driving both the BT-50 and the Ranger. Do not let the tinier 2.2-diesel fool you, it still shines with 110 kW/375 Nm and is bound to kick dust into the headlights of far more expensive 3.0-diesels. The BT-50 comes standard with 5 year/ 90 000 km service plan.

Victory for Groenewald at Killarney QUICKPIC Hennie Groenewald drove a masterful race at Killarney, surviving a bruising second round of the Bridgestone Production Car Championship claiming the new Sasol racing Subaru WRX STI sedan’s maiden victory in race two and first overall podium with 3rd for the day. At the same time Richard Pinard completed all three races, marking Sasolracing Subaru as the only team to record a full house of finishes. Practice and Qualifying: Hennie found the front and rear of his car working against each other, making handling a handful around the 3,2 km Cape Town circuit while Richard suffered a water leak, leaving the pair 6th and 8th on the timesheets. In Saturday’s qualifying Hennie was just 0,2 second from the front row – but so were another four drivers, leaving the Sasolracing car to line-up 6th for the first race. Richard was happy with his qualifying pace, just a couple of tenths behind his more experienced team leader. Race 1: Hennie held station behind a raging battle between Gennaro Bonafede and Michael Stephen in a pair of Audis. When Stephen made his move Hennie followed him past Bonafede but in the process inadvertently tagged Stephen, leaving the production-car champion with a puncture. Hennie inherited 5th and circulated the remaining laps in that position where he finished. Richard had a good first race, piling pressure on Tschops Sipuka (Audi). As the race progressed brake fluid started to leak from a caliper and Richard applied caution and finished 7th. Race 2: The inverted grid saw Richard line up on the front row, with Hennie 4th. Away from the grid, the mad dash to the first corner saw Hennie tagged from behind by Bonafede which pitched the #8 Subaru sideways in front of the following pack. As his rivals took avoiding action, Hennie powered the Subaru out of trouble and into the lead by turn two. What followed was a high-speed train of sophisticated machinery, all squabbling over second place as Groenewald held station un-

He was ably helped by a closely following Tschops Sipuka (Audi) who took defensive lines to maintain his second place, which in turn concentrated the field that got in each other’s way and slowed the chasing pack as a whole. Richard had a pair of new tyres for race two, which affected his handling so badly the tyres wore-off before the end of the 7-lapper. Race 3: If race two was a humdinger, the 14-lap feature race was filled with action from the flag. Hennie started 5th and rocketed off the line only to see Melvill Priest (Audi) miss a gear. He jinxed right to avoid the blue car ahead and soon two BMW’s, one Subaru and two Audis barreled towards the first corner sideby-side. As the corner approached, Van der Linde (BMW) squeezed right towards priest, who

banged Hennie’s left side. To Hennie’s right, Michael Stephen on the far right went around everyone, leaving Fourie (BMW) trying for the same piece of tarmac occupied by the Subaru. The resulting impact put Fourie out of the race. As the battered field continued, Hennie came under attack from all sides. He passed Priest around the outside of Turn 1 and held his position for a couple of laps. As Priest became more desperate he drove into Hennie under braking for Turn 2. Hennie said: “I held my line and braked in a straight line for Turn 2; Priest turned in and took a line as if I wasn’t there.” It was stupid driving that badly damaged the left front corner of the Subaru, which circulated to an eventual 5th place. Richard, suffering from an over active fuel pump, drove to 7th place which gave him 6th overall for

the day. Team principal Carel Pienaar said: “We did well. I hope for a podium and we achieved that. Both cars finished all three races which shows we are not as fragile as we were. We expected to be slowest of the three manufacturers and we were. Hennie was only 5th fastest in the race he won. It’s astonishing that we recorded our first win of the season at Killarney.” With just three weeks and only ten working days before the Sasolracing Circuit Team appears at Aldo Scribante for round three, the SP Race Team is going to burn the midnight oil, not only to repair the race damage, but continue the development of the WRX STI sedan. At the car’s recent introduction, we briefly broke away from a fitting five-star dinner to examine the newcomer. It looked perfectly at home on the wet cobblestones outside a boutique hotel and all the above-mentioned gadgets were declared as truly impressive. Even more so is the LS460’s price of R 1 236 000 which undercuts any of its direct rivals by a substantial amount and uppercuts them when it comes to optional extras. Included in this price is a 4-year/100 000km full maintenance plan and warranty as well as Lexus’ incredible customer service. If only tomorrow wasn’t a dream . . .

The Q5 still embodies a sense of spacious and luxurious style made to the usual high standard of comfort and quality that you can expect from Audi.

Try the Audi Q5 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic CLAIRE MAASCH I’m not a huge fan of oversized, pricey SUVs. I find them a bit pointless really. And initially, I wasn’t particularly taken with the Audi Q5 either. My first impressions were very negative, I disliked its bulbous bonnet, I felt too far removed from the whole driving experience with its clever driver assist technology and I really couldn’t see the point of its existence – halfway between a Q3 (which is quite big enough for the school run in my opinion) and a Q7 (which is somehow just magnificent). Why would anyone want to own one? And then I fiddled with the drive select options. After switching from the comfort drive mode that I received the car in and changing to the dynamic mode, the Q5 livened up substantially and became much sportier. The auto drive mode adapts the transmission, steering and suspension to match your driving style and I must admit this mode impressed me to no end. Although the response through the wheel was still somewhat dulled, I began

to see what attracts so many to coveting an Audi of this size. First of all, it plays the popularity game by placing both driver and occupants fairly high above the crowd in traffic. South Africans love driving large vehicles with higher ground clearance for pavement hopping and the feeling of being able to look over the myriad of hatchbacks on our highways and byways. Then there’s the comfort factor. I haven’t yet immersed myself in the soft leather and sculpted seat of an Audi and not enjoyed the experience. The Q5 was no exception. The Q5 still embodies a sense of spacious and luxurious style made to the usual high standard of comfort and quality that you can expect from Audi. Our model came upholstered in black leather with classy metallic inlays in the dash and along the doors. There is also a capacious luggage compartment to swallow all those school bags and the weekly shop. Our test car came with a few interior extras including Bluetooth (R6 000) and a very comprehensive and easy to use multimedia infotainment system incorporating satellite navigation (R22 000) as well as park distance con-

trol (R4 400). The latter we found to be set a little too high and it started panicking when there was still almost a metre of clearance from an obstacle. I turned it off most of the time. Dual dials for climate control ensure that no fights will break out over the ambient temperature in the car. I was rather taken aback, though, by the very manual seat adjustment settings (automatic settings are an option ( R9 600) in the Q5) as this seemed so out of place with the mass of top class technology and sleek finishes of the Q5. Driving this 2.0 litre 165kW behemoth is an experience. Utilising technology that effectively builds an SUV on top of an A4 chassis, Audi somehow managed to marry the two rather successfully. You get a little more crossover for the odd adventure as a soft offroader without the loss of luxury - an ideal that has massive appeal to many South Africans. The Q5 is surprisingly sporty, given its bulk and the response when you put your foot down is prompt. The 6-speed automatic Tiptronic gearbox is smooth and responsive – especially in dynamic mode. And then there’s Audi’s astounding handbrake technology – it

never ceases to amaze me how a tiny finger operated handbrake can hold a 2 ton vehicle on one of Cape Town’s hilly streets. Amazing! Consumption wise, we averaged 10 l/100 km (although the alleged consumption is 8.5 l – 7.9l/100 km) on very mixed driving. Our Q5 came with 18 inch 5 spoke alloy wheels, Xenon headlights with LED lights in the rear and an eye-catching metallic ice silver paint job (R3 400 extra). The standard price for the Audi Q5 is R528 000 (ours was R563 800 inclusive of the extras mentioned above). Included is a 5-year 100 000 km maintenance plan with service intervals every 15 000 km and a one year warranty. After a week of admiring glances and comments from work colleagues and of travelling in comfort and some style, I’ll admit that I revised most, but not all, of the negative opinions about the Q5. For the South African market at least, I can see its appeal (if not the point) and there’s no denying the fact that Audi have produced another quality vehicle for the large SUV crossover market. But I invite you to form your own opinion of the vehicle and go and test a Q5 for yourself!

Infiniti M launch – the interesting intro HANJO STIER Over two decades ago, Honda introduced the Acura brand to America in an effort to capture luxury and performance vehicle sales. Toyota and Nissan were not far behind with Lexus and Infiniti launched only months apart in 1989 to promote Japanese luxury cars. At first the concept was snuffed at. Luxury made in Japan? Yeah, right. Honda’s Accord and Acura’s Legend had already proven that affordable, reliable luxury will top the sales charts so it wasn’t long until the eastern luxury offerings became more acceptable, interesting and popular. Mazda even played with the idea while the other three were almost exclusively marketed in America, simply because that’s who they were initially meant for. Infiniti crept into Europe in 2008, following China in 2007 and Russia in 2006 to total about 450 dealers worldwide. With 800 outlets targeted for 2016, South Africa and Australia are next on the list of Infiniti markets – happily, their global manager is a South African! Johannesburg and Pretoria dealerships are up and running while KZN, Pinetown and Cape Town are on track for late 2012 openings. Infiniti’s core values of “Driving Pleasure, Peace of Mind and Hospitality” tie up with its “Inspired Performance” tagline as it sets out to capture a piece of the growing South African motor industry; especially the luxury segment where you’ll find the German trio of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Porsche, Volvo and a few others are also in their sights when it comes to SUV’s, and Infiniti has ties with Daimler to exploit the budding trend of four-cylinder turbo engines. Lexus wasn’t mentioned much but the sales philoso-

POWER: Available as M30d or M37 with either a 3-litre turbo-Diesel V6 (175kW/550Nm) or 3.7-litre petrol V6 (235kW/360Nm), all M’s feature an adaptive 7-speed automatic gearbox with shift paddles and four drive modes: Normal, Eco, Sport and Winter which set the car’s character and response accordingly. phy sounds remarkably familiar: Customers are treated as guests, with respect, in a unique environment. As for the actual car – apologies for the lengthy intro – the Infiniti M was inspired by their Essence concept car and features trusted front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout under an unmistakably Japanese flowing design which ticks all the boxes for Infiniti’s design language. Available as M30d or M37 with either a 3-litre turbo-diesel V6 (175kW/550Nm) or 3.7-litre petrol V6 (235kW/360Nm), all M’s feature an adaptive 7-speed automatic gearbox with shift paddles and four drive modes: Normal, Eco, Sport and Winter which set the car’s character and response accordingly. Both models are available in S, GT and Premium trim, some of which arrive with more toys and adaptive suspension, dynamic safety

shield (blind spot intervention, active cruise control with collision warning, intelligent brake assist) and dynamic cornering enhancement which brakes inside the wheels for a four-wheel-steering effect. The more posh derivatives also receive BOSE sound systems and Forest Air which plays exotic bird and primate sounds while blowing 95% humidity heat into the cabin. No, I’m kidding; just checking if anyone’s paying attention. Forest Air carefully controls temperature, humidity and cleanliness for a fresher climate. Prices start at R649 000 for the M37 GT model and rise to R752 305 for the M30d S Premium. Petrol V6 models will only be available late in 2012 and Infiniti identified affluent emptynesters as their market, not to mention owners of BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class sedans.

Our short test drive took us through Pretoria’s hinterland and immediately showcased the car’s sure-footed road holding. The turbodiesel has minor lag before strutting its stuff in a wonderfully smooth and quiet way, the ride is excellent and the cars did a sterling job of swerving through a field of potholes. Equipment and comfort levels are impressive on all models but the higher spec cars had a slightly more nervous ride thanks to their 20-inch wheels. They compensated for this by offering better seats and additional toys to play with, including adaptive cruise control and hdd/media/navigation (optional for other M’s). Space, comfort and equipment is on par with its German competitors while looks, perceived quality and driving characteristics will be a matter of personal taste. Prices hover around those of its intended rivals where specification levels and optional extras might be additional deciding factors. Here follows a list of German’s equivalents: Audi A6 3.0TDi Quattro R672 500, Audi A6 3.0TFSi Quattro R683 000, BMW 530d R669 000, BMW 535i for R679 000, Mercedes-Benz E350 CDI BE sedan R685 000 and the Mercedes-Benz E350 BE sedan for R709 000. Having sold just over 110 cars in a few weeks, Infiniti isn’t looking for huge sales numbers but rather strong brand building. It even tempts buyers with Tracker Skytrack units fitted to each vehicle for extra peace of mind. An optional concierge service is also available with this device. The Infiniti M launches into a small market but brings the right arsenal with it, especially if dealers equal or better the exquisite Lexus attitude. If that’s the biggest change they bring to our shores, spoiling customers rotten and showing others how it’s done, I welcome them with two widely extended arms. – Galimoto
