CHALLENGES FAS-CHILDREN FACE

‘They are hurt’, says Debra SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

F

ETAL Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Day was recently commemorated throughout the country. This syndrome, which is caused by mothers using alcohol during pregnancy, has no cure. South-Africa has the highest occurrence rate of FAS in the world. Children with FAS struggle daily with various physical, mental and social challenges. This often leads to parents or teachers labelling a FAS-child as being disobedient. To try and understand the challenges of raising a child with FAS, Eikestadnuus spoke to Debra Swart, owner of the local Rescuers Daycare and foster-parent of a child with FAS. Debra, who did a course through the Department of Social Development on how to care for a FAS-child, says that they need a structured and controlled environment. They often lack the ability to understand cause and effect and find school subjects like mathematics difficult, because they have difficulty applying problemsolving skills, she says. “They have poor organisational skills, experience memory problems and have difficulty in learning from past experiences. Many of them also suffer from speech delays or stuttering. “Today the child may be reading well, but tomorrow he won’t be able to read a word. It’s like the whole system is connected the one day and the next day it is totally disjointed.” She says this is why so many parents or caregivers might see these children as disobedient or

stubborn. “When these children say that they forgot, they mean that all the information is gone. The part of the brain that deals with short term memory is damaged.” This also makes learning very exhausting. “I use repetition. When she gets home from school, I’ll firstly check to see which frame of mind she is in. When she’s ready, we go through her work verbally. I, however, can’t plan, because each day is different.” Debra says the most important thing to remember is that these children are hurt. “They get very irritable, frustrated, angry and anxious. They often shut down. Lying and stealing are problems and they sometimes run away from home. They have problems at school and

many have run-ins with the law.” When it comes to awareness around FAS, Debra feels that people should speak about it more often in the clinics and schools. “Doctors and clinic sisters must educate new mothers on FAS. Regular talks should also be held at schools. Children, who want to be parents one day, should know the consequences of drinking whilst pregnant.” Despite the many challenges and the fact that she sometimes feels like she’s fighting a losing battle, Debra says that she appreciates her foster-child for what she is. “Especially her amazing giggle!” Parents or teachers who need advice can phone Debra Swart on 021 880 0333.

Brig. Dirk Mentoor

hulself in dié areas kom wegsteek.”

THE South African Police Service released the national crime statistics last week for the period April 2010 to March 2011. While national crime levels have decreased, the numbers for Stellenbosch were extremely high. ) Murder rate: In Stellenbosch this has decreased from 34 to 30, but it is still the second highest in eight years. Cloetesville’s numbers have risen from 0 in 2008 / 2009 to 5 last year and have increased to 11 this year. A total of 62 murders were reported in the Stellenbosch cluster (Stellenbosch, Cloetesville, Klapmuts, Franschhoek and Groot Drakenstein stations), 7 more than last year. ) Attempted murder: A staggering rise of 90,5% (from 42 to 80) in the cluster; 27 in Stellenbosch (an increase of 7) and 15 in Cloetesville (9 more). ) Robbery with aggravating circumstances (or armed robbery): Up from 146 last year to 201 in Stellenbosch and from 34 to 57 in Cloetesville, with a total of 299 cases reported in the cluster, compared to last year’s 217. )Common robbery: An increase of 70,8% in the cluster. In Stellenbosch 199 cases were reported this year compared to last year’s 117 and an increase from 26 to 51 in Cloetesville. ) Property related crime - Businesses burgled: A huge increase of 36,5% in this type of crime in the cluster. In Stellenbosch 405 cases were reported, compared to last year’s 296 (an increase of 109). In Cloetesville there was a decrease: 40 compared to 57 in 2010 / 2011. ) House burglaries: A rise from 945 to 1057 in Stellenbosch and 1446 to 1515 in the cluster; but a decline was reported in Cloetesville. ) Stolen motor vehicles and motorcycles: More

than 89% of the vehicles stolen in the cluster, were stolen in Stellenbosch, with a total of 243 for the year; 20 more than last year. ) Theft from motor vehicles: This type of theft reached its highest mark in eight years with 1933 reported cases in Stellenbosch (637 more than last year) and a total of 2 285 for the cluster. ) Crimes heavily dependent on police action for detection (crime which will only be detected through good policing): This type of crime declined in Stellenbosch. It includes illegal possession of firearms and ammunition (13 compared to last year’s 18), drug-related crime (down from 361 to 327) and driving under the influence (down from 208 to 147). In Cloetesville these crimes have increased greatly from 2 to 18 cases (firearms) and from 588 to 639 cases (drug-related crime). Issues such as contact crimes, including robberies and murder and property-related crimes, such as burglaries and theft of and out of motor vehicles, seem to be the Stellenbosch cluster’s biggest remaining problems.

COSTA-MOORDSAAK

DOV neem ’n besluit ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

D

Special operation at taxirank, market TWO people were arrested during a special operation held at the Bergzicht taxi-rank and market Friday afternoon. According to Mr Patrick Oliver, director for Public Safety at Stellenbosch Municipality, the two men arrested were foreigners without any work permits. The operation was held in conjunction with the traffic department, municipal law enforcement, SAPS and custom officers who specifically focused on counterfeit items. According to maj. René Matthee, the police spokesperson, cigarettes to the value of R5 000 and clothing to the value of R22 000 were confiscated.

Oliver added that the counterfeit items such as Springbokand Adidas-jerseys, CD’s and DVD’s that were confiscated at seven of the stalls were handed in by the Stellenbosch SAPS. The whole rank was cordoned off and no vehicle could leave the premises without being checked by traffic officers. Oliver says traffic and law enforcement officers also held special operations on Friday and Saturday between 00:00 and 04:00, where they specifically focused on drunk driving. “Six arrests were made on Friday, and five during the early hours of Sunday morning.” - Samantha van den Berg.

Do not despair CRIME is rife in Stellenbosch. From murder to house-breaking - we are all in danger of becoming a crime statistic. Because the police can’t or won’t take responsibility for our safety, residents are spending millions to protect their families and property. The police offer a variety of explanations for the high crime rate in the past year, such as the Soccer World Cup resulting in a rise in local crime because officers had to do duty in the metropoles. But these are of little comfort to those who may have endured the loss of loved ones, the loss of personal dignity and the loss of treasured possessions. Morality seems to be at an all time low in South Africa at present. What some see as a moral action - fighting hate speech in court - others experience as an infringement on their rights and furthermore, an attack on their struggle heritage. How do we create a shared value system? How do we free ourselves from the shackles of the past, how do we rid ourselves of the cycles of suffering and revenge? If we don’t, the have nots will continue to feed on the guilt and in many cases, the possessions of the haves. The haves in turn, will, because of their huge contribution to the fiscus, continue to turn a deaf ear to pleas for any further hand-outs. Breaking this deadlock requires a firm belief in the essential goodness of mankind and a forgiving nature. By all means, secure your own safety against those that deny their inherent goodness, but at the same time, do reach out to those in need. Help where you can, but do not despair if the response to your “kindness” is not what you may have expected. With each kind deed, we are changing our world for the better.

IN MEMORIAM ANN SUTTON, one of South Africa’s first landscape architects and the South African Icon of Landscape Architecture of the Institute of Landscape Architects of South Africa (Ilasa) for 2011, recently passed away at her home in Franschhoek. Ann and her brother Michael were both born deaf, but a trained teacher from England taught them to talk and lip-read. Ann and Michael studied in England, where she was the first deaf student at Swanley Horticultural College in Kent. She completed a three year diploma course in horticulture and a certificate in landscape architecture from the London Polytechnic School of Architecture, before returning to JoAnn Sutton hannesburg in 1955. Landscape architecture was then a totally unknown profession, but she started her own practice in 1958. Together with Joane Pim, Roelf Botha and Ben Farrell, she was instrumental in establishing the Southern African Institute of Landscape Architects in 1960. Ann eventually moved to Cape Town, while Michael went to practice architecture in Greece. She went into partnership with Wim Tijmens, wellknown horticulturist and the previous senior curator of the Botanical Gardens of Stellenbosch University, and was responsible for many landscape

projects in the Winelands area. Ann also loved horseriding and she became one of the first members of the local Lipizzaner team. According to Ilasa, the honour of being voted Icon of Landscape Architecture was not only for Ann’s lifetime achievements and her dedication to the advancement of the profession of landscape architecture in South Africa, but also for the inspirational influence she has had on landscape architecture in South Africa. “It would be true to say that without her inspiration, landscape architecture in South Africa would not be where it is today,” an Ilasa tribute to Sutton reads. The Institute also acknowledged her business skills – having shown that it was possible to be a successful woman entrepreneur in South Africa long before women received the recognition they deserve. The Vineyard Hotel & Spa, where Sutton had been working for almost 30 years as landscape architect, also received an 2011 Corobrik-ILASA Award of Excellence this year for its garden, which reflects a successful balance between urban and natural context. Tijimens remembers Ann for her wonderful spirit, her charitable nature, her compassion for animals and her love for her brother, family, friends and her garden.

KADALIE BEDANK UIT US RAAD

‘Bespotting van gereg’ SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

“E

Só lees me. Samuel Tshehla (40) eerder as dr.

Volgens prof.

Six trees for newborns SIX newborns from Stellenbosch and Somerset West were honoured each with a special tree planted at Stellenbosch Square in celebration of Arbour Week recently. The trees were planted by Stellenbosch Square and Langverwacht Landscaping for babies born at the Stellenbosch and Vergelegen Mediclinics during 1 and 7 September 2011. The trees planted were African Holly trees, indigenous trees that easily adapt to the environment. The babies, who were born at the Stellenbosch Mediclinic, include Migael du Plessis, Mia Cara Ferreira and Jordanne le Roux. Keelin Zachary Jansen, Walter Heinrich Johannsmeier and Isabel Helena Snyman were born at the Vergelegen Mediclinic in Somerset West. Stellenbosch Square chose to plant the six trees as it is estimated that for every five or six new trees planted, there is an offset of one ton of carbon dioxide. Parents will receive a certificate to authenticate the planting of the tree in the name of their newborns.

Amazink Live is a culturally authentic, interactive South African musical and dining experience which takes off on 1 October at the AmaZink Theatre restaurant situated in Kayamandi. The audience gets to experience the excitement and South African culture while at the same time being encouraged to join the party. Two dynamic front liners, Ramaine Barreiro Lloyd and Richard Hala, give a thrilling interactive performance and are supported by an eight-piece chorus of hand-picked waiters who can both serve and sing. The atmosphere is indescribable as the ten-piece cast perform heart-rending songs such as Pata Pata, The Click Song, Meadowlands, The Lion Sleeps Tonight and Mamma Tembu’s Wedding. The evening hots up with more recent numbers, African Dream and Paradise Road, Special Star and Diamonds on the Soles of my Feet. This

leads to an all out party where the audience joins the cast for one big party with songs like Jabulani, Dance Sum More, You Can Call Me Al and Nkalakatha. The audience is served a delicious three-course meal, incorporating African, Malay and Afrikaans dishes, prepared by Bertus Basson. AmaZink Live at the Ikhaya Trust Centre is an initiative of a larger project to unlock tourism potential in Kayamandi. Local businessmen Jan Viviers (he and his family have lived in Kayamandi for the last few years), Leon de Wit and Bertus Basson teamed up with entrepreneur Loyiso Mbambo, and agreed to add value to the Kayamandi community through this project. A mini-bus taxi service can also be arranged between Stellenbosch and Kayamandi. Tickets cost R300 per person and in-

cludes a welcoming drink, threecourse dinner and the show. Book online at www.amazink.co.za or 021 889 7536 or 072 993 9173. Or follow us on www.facebook.com/ amazinkeatery.

4 JAAR SARS ONDERVINDING

S

TELLENBOSCH’S Reutech Radar Systems has recently successfully completed the Final Qualification Review of the RSR X-Band air/sea surveillance radars. In December 2007 a Norwegian defence equipment supply company, Electronicon A.S., was contracted by the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation (NDLO) to supply five RSR 210N X-Band air/ sea surveillance radars. Reutech Radar Systems, a radar development and manufacturing company, was contracted by Electronicon A.S. as the major sub-supplier into the programme. This contract was awarded for radar systems with primary role as

helicopter control radar and additional supplementary surveillance capabilities. A significant milestone was reached with the successful completion of the Final Qualification Review following Sea Acceptance Trials in Norwegian waters at the end of June this year. “The completion means that the radars can now be considered commissioned into service with a leading NATO navy,” said Anthony Green, Product Strategy Executive at Reutech. “More importantly, since the product is now officially commissioned, we can expect significant follow-on orders from other foreign procurement programs. “The South African Navy is also planning the procurement of

offshore patrol vessels, for which RSR 210N is ideally suited. “The qualification process was not an easy one. They required that the final qualification must be performed on their ships, rather than on shore. “This meant that after initial testing at our Stellenbosch factory and surrounds we needed to move personnel and equipment over long distances to begin the installation and testing process on the Fritdjof Nansen class frigates at Haakonsvern naval base near Bergin in Norway.” This was only the start of a very complex and difficult qualification review. “The highly complex shoreline around Norway, which is dotted with small islands and long fjords, made for difficult terrain in which to detect air and sea targets. “This was often done under extreme North Sea weather conditions, where the radar was required to maintain performance even under significant vessel pitch and roll conditions. “These trials comprehensively tested man and machine and whilst the radar demonstrated excellent performance, occasional sea sickness of our personnel was a constant reminder of the hostile conditions!” Green added. For Reutech this confirms the company as a recognised international supplier of high performance military and industrial radar systems. “We can compete against strong opposition in the international market to secure foreign orders that result in an inflow of foreign revenue to the country,” said Green.

HE Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes are constantly working towards our missions, one of them being to capture ambassadors for Stellenbosch and the bigger wine industry. During the month of September six students, as well as a lecturer from the University Johannesburg’s School of Hospitality and Tourism spent three days in Stellenbosch and surrounds to learn more about South Africa’s wine capital. This is the fifth group of students in three years to visit Stellenbosch. The aim of these visits is to provide students with a true feeling

for Stellenbosch and the South African wine culture, as well as building loyalty towards the Stellenbosch brand.

The visit included a wine course, cellar tours and visits to most of Stellenbosch’s top tourism destinations and restaurants. Ken Forrester, chairman of the Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes, as well as Colin Bridger of Die Bergkelder, are both alumni of the University Johannesburg’s School of Hospitality and Tourism. By exposing this group of students to the Stellenbosch culture, food and wine experiences, we believe the Stellenbosch brand will top their list when they become influential young professionals in the gastronomy industry.

All Blacks the favourites

Talk rugby with Taariq van der Ross WITH the Rugby World Cup having kicked off last Friday, rugby fever has surely hit the nation, and probably no harder than in rugby-mad Stellenbosch. The 2011 tournament in New Zealand is not only the 7th edition of the World Cup, but also sees the tournament go its full circle, after New Zealand also hosted the first edition in 1987. Here is a few facts about the World Cup tournament. The first game of every World Cup to date, has been started by the same 105 year old whistle. The All Blacks (1987) and Eng-

land (2003) have each won the tournament once, while Australia (1991, 1999) and South Africa (1995, 2007) have won it twice. On four occasions the country hosting the tournament made it to the finals. The biggest concern for Springbok-supporters though, is that no nation has ever successfully defended its title as World Champions. A feather in the cap for Stellenbosch University is that former student André Watson has refereed two of the previous six finals (1999, 2003). This year sees the All Blacks as favourites and the Boks as defending champions. Australia goes into the World Cup with a monkey on their back in the form of the Tri-Nations trophy, as no team has ever won both tournaments in one season. England are complaining about everything as usual, while perennial under achievers Wales, Ireland and Scotland should live up to their billing. Argentina are still dreaming about 2007 and the French are predicted to be. . . unpredictable.

Namibia, Japan, America and Italy, with their hearts beating a bit faster than usual, put up brave performances in their first matches, but it’s only after the second round of fixtures that we will have a true reflection of what these teams are capable of. Argentina stretching England and Wales scaring South Africa was almost expected, but grinding out victories is what the World Cup is all about. The Springboks should easily enough win Pool D, and according to most pundits, the Boks will face Ireland in the quarterfinals and the All Blacks in the semifinals. I fully agree with a statement made by former All Black-captain Sean Fitzpatrick that the winner of this match will go on to win the tournament. In betting circles most of the money is on local boy, JP Pietersen, to be the top try scorer in the tournament. If Pietersen crosses the white line regularly, it will go a long way to seeing that the Springboks are crowned World Champions for a record third time.
