LOUBSERS WYS HUL STAAL
The Seven Big Mistakes of Home Selling.
Kilimandjaro oorwin SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG
D
IE Loubser-familie versit berge.

heeltyd gelag.

STELLENBOSCH - research over the last few years into the real estate market throughout South Africa has shown that there are so many people offering advice on the subject that it has become extremely difficult to separate fact from opinion. A new report has just been released which reveals the seven most common and costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home. Knowing these mistakes can help you sell your home faster and for the most amount of money. This report, entitled “The 7 Selling Pitfalls of Real Estate” outlines why the traditional selling methods are becoming increasingly less effective in today’s market. It shows that
the advice received from friends and, sometimes from Real Estate agents, is causing home sellers to settle for far less than market value, causing disillusionment and costing thousands. The great news is that all of these mistakes can be avoided easily once a home seller knows about them To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report, call 086 111 2569 and enter ID 6800. LAERSKOLE LOOP DEUR
Boewe teiken nou skole ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN
V
Volgens mnr.
loop. Hy was so 120 na 150 meter voor my toe ek hom agternasit.
A case of murder and two cases of attempted murder are being investigated after three separate incidents last weekend. According to police spokesperson Const. Marize Papier, the first incident took place in Mooiwater, Franschhoek on Sunday night. “Two unknown men arrived at a container, which serves as a shop in Mooiwater, to buy bread at 21:45. One of the men drew a firearm and shot one of the Somali shopkeepers in the stomach before fleeing on foot.” Mohammed Burish (41) was taken to hospital where he was treated for the wound. Anyone with information can contact Const. Sedrieck Diedericks on 021 876 8060.
A murder case is being investigated after a man was shot in Kayamandi on Saturday morning. The man’s body was found in Kaneni Street at 07:30. He was shot in the head, close to his left ear, and left next to his shack. The suspects are still at large. Anyone with information can contact Warrant Officer Johan Nel on 021 809 5000. Another attempted murder is being investigated in Costa Land, Kayamandi after a man allegedly shot his girlfriend in her leg. He also hit her on the head with the firearm. Anyone with information can contact Nel on 021 809 5000.
Dit volg ná me.
Hold your horses! A broken down bus caused some panic
last week when it started running down Helshoogte Pass and ended up in a ditch. The bus had broken down at 18:00 on 13 September. While the driver was working on the battery, the bus slowly started to run downhill. It ran about 200 metres before coming to a standstill. Luckily no one was hurt in the incident. Pic: Mike Fraser
Four arrested A number of arrests were made in various incidents over the past few weeks. ) A 40-year-old man was arrested for theft from a motor vehicle at a private residence in Die Boord at 12:40 on 17 September. A wallet and Blackberry phone were stolen, but returned after police noticed the suspect crossing the river and arrested him. ) A 39-year-old man was arrested for burglary in Onder Papegaaiberg after he allegedly stole a security guard’s cell phone from the guard’s room on 18 September at 00:30. ) On 10 September a 25-year-old man was arrested for attempted burglary and burglary at 01:00. Const. Lionel Jephta was called to the scene where the man allegedly tried to break in. He was given a description of the suspect and arrested him in Dorp Street. The suspect is also linked to another burglary in Dorp Street. ) On 10 September a 22-year-old man was charged with perjury after he made a false statement to police regarding an armed robbery at a traffic light. The suspect alleged that he had been robbed of his laptop, cell phone, cash and GPS device by three men wielding a firearm. It later became apparent that this statement was false. “Members of the public are warned that to make a false statement under oath is seen as serious misconduct,” said police spokesperson Maj. René Matthee.

CRIME STATS 2010 / 2011
Companies give feedback ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN
A
FTER local crime statistics for 2010 and 2011 were released two weeks ago, private security companies have been having their say on the crime situation in town. Lee Lemmer, ABC Security, said that in many instances Stellenbosch reflects the highest figures in different categories of crime and that this needs to be reviewed. “Crimes committed by habitual criminals are an area of great concern – in both a rape and a murder case last year the alleged attackers had previous convictions and/or had been released on bail. This situation desperately needs to be addressed by the Justice Department.” She adds that there are solutions to the crime problem, but that the solutions need to be sustainable. “Neighbourhood watches have proven very successful in many areas. People can no longer sit back and wait for somebody else to sort things out – go out and get involved!
“Always be aware of what is happening around you and get to know the four neighbours around you.” ABC, already involved in the Dalsig Brandwacht Neighbourhood Watch, is willing to run awareness campaigns to encourage residents to be more vigilant, and to assist in setting up neighbourhood watches and patrols. Retired General Glenn Schooling, CEO of Stellenbosch Watch, said the crime report is one of the worst he has ever seen. “Is this due to a lackof policing, dedication, leadership and detection, a lack of cooperation between agencies and neighbourhood watches or the lack of exchange of information to all roleplayers that could prevent crime?” He and other security officers, acknowledge the role private companies play in the fight against crime. “We support the neighbourhood watches as well as rural safety through our radio project to increase communication. “Information regarding suspicious vehicles, persons, identified criminals and modus operandi
has to be communicated as speedily as possible to security companies, like Stellenbosch Watch, to inform their clients. Better cooperation and communication is very important in addressing crime.” Rob Dale, Regional Managing Director of ADT Security Western Cape, said that they have been successfully working with Stellenbosch Watch for more than 10 years. “We have maintained a positive involvement with the community through our association with the local SAPS, the Stellenbosch CPF and a number of neighbourhood watch movements. This has led to a high degree of visibility, saved lives and ensured that people can feel more secure and less vulnerable to crime.” Gerhard Claassen from CSS Tactical said the only effective solution is to act proactively. “This can only be done through dedicated patrols and effective monitoring of cameras in the areas. Through managing these measures well, crime will be reduced drastically.”

Hulle was 45 jaar getroud.

Plastiek en karton is egter so

NCOP OVERSIGHT VISIT TO STELLENBOSCH
Progress ‘very disappointing’ SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG
A
N increase in abortion rates among young girls and a lack of ablution facilities at a primary
school. These were just two of the many issues identified by the Western Cape delegates of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) during an oversight visit to Stellenbosch last week. The delegation visited sites in the area in 2007 as part of the Taking Parliament to the People programme and their followup last week was to check if any progress was made in the last four years. Their visit included the Kayamandi Clinic, Stellenbosch Hospital, Nondzame Primary School in Pniel and Klapmuts Primary School. At the Kayamandi Clinic it was found that with 8 000 patients being treated there each month, the clinic was inadequate for serving the area. The Stellenbosch Hospital showed an increase in abortion cases among 14- to 24-year-olds, particularly after the Easter, June and December holidays. At the Nondzame Primary School there were no ablution facilities for pupils.
At the Klapmuts Primary School it was found that alcohol abuse and teenage pregnancy in the area have affected pupils and a lack of other learning facilities, such as a science lab, was identified. Mr Freddie Adams, an ANC MP and one of the delegates, told Eikestadnuus this week that the progress made at each of these places was “very disappointing”. He says they expected to see dramatic changes at the Kayamandi Clinic, but rather found the staff still working in very poor conditions. “If it weren’t for outside funding, the clinic would have fallen to pieces long ago. The provincial government really dropped us here.” Adams contributes the improvements at the Klapmuts Primary School to the dedication of the academic staff, but feels that more attention should be given to the various social issues in the area. Regarding tension caused by a recent proposal to integrate the Nondzame Primary School with Pniel Primary, Adams says they would like to see more integration since the delegates, as part of the national parliament, support a non-racial South Africa. Adams says they are currently compiling a report on their visits. “We will also

appeal to the national government to assist the provincial government in resolving these issues. Four years are four years too long. We have fulfilled our oversight role, now they must do their part.” According to Ms Jo-Anne Otto, spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health, the department is fully aware of the challenges at both the Kayamandi Clinic and the Stellenbosch Hospital. She says that the high abortion rate is
not unique to the area, but that they have implemented several intervention programmes, such as active campaigning for family planning methods and the marketing of emergency contraceptives. Mr Paddy Attwell, spokesperson for the provincial Department of Education, was travelling at the time of going to print and wasn’t able to provide feedback on the situation at the Nondzame and Klapmuts Primary Schools.
The challenges identified were: Kayamandi Clinic: ) Inadequate for servicing the area. ) HIV and TB the diseases most often treated here. ) Unable to trace chronically ill patients. ) Space constraints. ) Operating hours can’t be extended due to costs. Stellenbosch Hospital: ) Increase in abortion cases (14 to 24 years). ) Human resource challenges. )Urgent renovation or upgrading needed. ) Absenteeism among staff members. Nondzame Primary School:
) Tensions caused by a proposal to integrate the Xhosa-medium school with the Afrikaans-medium Pniel Primary School. ) Lack of ablution facilities. ) Multi-grade classes. ) No access to sporting facilities. ) Dramatic decline in number of pupils. Klapmuts Primary School: ) Inadequate classrooms for 1 305 pupils. ) Lack of other learning facilities. ) Pupils affected by alcohol abuse and teenage pregnancy in the area. ) Lack of trauma counselling for pupils, high drop-out rate and multi-grade classes.

BOOMBAS-STROPERS SLAAN TOE
Mining rights opposed
Kamfers gestroop SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG
B
Dié skade is onomkeerbaar. Volgens mnr.

A LOCAL family says they received overwhelming support when they used social media in a bid to counter an application for sand mining rights on their farm. Through the use of social networking the Winshaws of the Winshaw Family Trust encouraged people to register as Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) before the closing date on 12 September. According to Pierre Winshaw the support from the community was overwhelming. Thousands of people expressed their support on social networks while the Winshaws are expecting around 1 000 registered I&APs. The application is for proposed sand mining rights on Farm 640, Penhill, the Winshaws’ farm Klein Welmoed

Rapporteer stropery by 021 808 8890 (Munisipale Wetstoepassing), 021 808 8160 (Munisipale Omgewingskantoor) en 021 808 2330/2333 (USBD).
next to Meerlust. According to the application by Braaf Environmental Practitioners, the proposed mine will encompass about 44 hectares of the farm. In the meantime Winshaw says he has experienced difficulty in contacting Olivia Braaf of Braaf Environmental Practitioners. When Eikestadnuus spoke to Braaf on Wednesday morning, enquiring about an email sent to her on Tuesday, she said that she could not promise feedback. “At the moment we are collating all the correspondence and we will respond to all of the questions as part of the official process. I can’t promise that I will be able to respond to your questions in time, but they will be captured as part of the process.” No feedback was received at the time of going to print.

NATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION
18 locals to compete S EVENTY young instrumentalists across South Africa are gearing up for the 2011 SAMRO Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition. Instrumentalists of 13 years and younger will be taking part in this competition at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow, Cape Town from 26 to 30 September. The event is organised by the Tygerberg branch of the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT). Medals and prizes worth more than R50 000 are at stake. The 70 candidates, of whom 18 are from the Cape and surrounds, were selected from 134 entrants after auditions had been held in the main centres of the country in June.
AhYoung Moon (8) from Stellenbosch will play the piano in the 2011 SAMRO Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition.
The group includes 10 students from development programmes in disadvantaged communities who will compete on equal terms
with their peer groups. There are four categories – Piano, Strings, Woodwind and Brass Instruments, and Other Instruments (percussion, recorder, classical guitar and harp) – as well as the sub-category for development groups. The competition was inspired by SASMT’s Hubert van der Spuy 22 years ago. It provides a platform for promising young musicians to participate on a national level. Leon Hartshorne, president of SASMT nationally and in Tygerberg, expects a higher standard than in the past and more mature performances because of the new, older age restriction. For bookings and more information, phone Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre: 0 021 939 9105.

Final 2011 USSO concert THE final concert by the Stellenbosch University Symphony Orchestra for 2011 will take place on 1 October in the Endler Hall at 20:00. To mark the centenary of the great Gustav Mahler’s death, USSO’s music director has decided to pay tribute to him with a performance of his much loved fourth symphony. The symphony culminates in Mahler’s setting “Das himmlische
Leben” (life in heaven), which is sung by a soprano voice in the last movement. In this performance Zanne Stapelberg will be the soprano soloist and the orchestra will be led by guest concert master Suzanne Martens. Tickets at R110 and R85 are available at Computicket outlets or on 0861 915 8000. The box office at the Endler Hall will open at 19:00 on the night.

THE magnificent sextet for piano, violin, viola, cello, clarinet and French horn by Ernó Dohnányi was first heard in South Africa at the 2008 Chamber Music Festival. Because of its tremendous reception then, the organisers of the Endler Concert Series have decided to bring it back on 24 September at 20:00 in the Endler Hall as part of the Chamber Music Series. The Endler Concert Series has thus created the opportunity to present six of the Cape’s finest classical musicians side by side in one concert. Tickets at R99 and R75 are available at Computicket outlets or on 0861 915 8000. The box office at the Endler Hall will open at 19:00 on the night. BOSS OF THE YEAR
US’s Dr Fish a finalist EUNICE VISAGIE
S
TELLENBOSCH University’s Dr Therese Fish is one of 15 finalists for the national Boss of the Year Award. Dr Fish is Deputy Dean: Community Service and Interaction at the Faculty of Health Sciences, US. A key objective of the Boss of the Year Award is to pay tribute to leaders in the workplace who have the courage and foresight to identify and maintain direction and focus in guiding companies, departments and staff; not only to achieve business success, but also to develop and grow people and teams. “It is a humbling experience as one is not in a managerial position to be popular; therefore when a young employee identifies qualities in us which we of- Dr Therese Fish ten take for granted, it is a great honour. “It has made me step back from the frenetic pace of my job and reflect on the role that I play in the lives of my staff,” says Dr Fish. “It is easy to describe one’s style in terms of the popular MBA terminology of good leader styles, however, I had found after many years in managerial positions that my style reflects my personality. “I am driven to excellence, assertive and energetic. I use this to drive how I lead and manage – I have a flexible style which adjusts to the task at hand and the people I need to lead. Sometimes one
has to hold a hand, at other times I have to give the self-initiators the gap to achieve their and the organisation’s goals. I see myself as a facilitator who helps staff achieve their full potential.” A big challenge in South Africa is to identify good leaders. “The workplace is becoming more complicated as the stressors of our staff’s personal lives influence their performance. Finding the balance between accommodating these influences while achieving the organisational goals require managers to develop the intelligence to adjust to the situation at hand,” Dr Fish comments on good leadership. She is realistic and honest about the effect winning this award will have on her life. “If I were a teenager in the 1970s I would answer ‘don’t be simple; of course it will’. To be serious though, it will definitely change my life – the exposure that the award gives one is invaluable. “It will give me the opportunity to share my enthusiasm about the roles that we as leaders play in the lives of so many people with others. “I have a personal commitment to using my skills in South Africa for South Africa – it will affirm the success that I have achieved – I am successful Because Others Support our System (BOSS),” she concludes. The new titlebearer will be announced on National Bosses Day, which will this year be celebrated on Friday, 14 October.
Nuwe drankwet onder loep
D

LÜCKHOFF-SOKKERSPAN
WesKaap se heel beste ABRIE BURGER
D

Franschhoek se Jos le Roux was tweede.
Mountain biking’s Gspot in S’Bosch THE mountains and farms around Stellenbosch are like a treasure chest filled with jewels for the mountain biking community. One of these gem-stones is the G-spot – a biking spot in the mountains between Coetzenburg and Eden. Local Stellenbosch mountain biking icon Hanlie Booyens loves this hand-made route with its epic single track riding. “It is hard work to get to the top, but you get your reward on the way down with the adrenaline injection,” said Booyens. “It is fun in capital letters. Better than any rollercoaster ride you will ever have!” The G-spot was obviously built with Downhill racing in mind. Every jump has a “chicken run”, though, so if you don’t

have the courage to take the jump, you can ride around it, said another local mountain biker, CM Muller. “It’s like going down a supertube. When you get to the bottom, you just want to do it again,” he said. The G-spot is great mountain biking in general, thanks to all the single track sections and jumps. It’s not ideal for beginners, though, unless you ride very slowly. But then you miss all the fun, said Muller. The G-spot is not all about adrenaline, said Booyens. “The best of all is the 360° panoramic view that you get. “It really touches your soul, especially when the sun goes down behind Table Mountain in the distance and the Stellenbosch Mountains are glowing red.” – Eunice Visagie

KLUBKAMPIOENSKAPPE
Hier is mense se menings:
D
