Rhenish’s Astro Journey Begins In a familiar hockey stance, but with a spade instead of a hockey stick, Rhenish 1st Hockey team captain, Caitlyn Leslie, and vice-captain, Ash Rutherford, excitedly till the earth of what is to become their new astroturf.

Hockey fanatics, both Caitlyn and Ash can hardly believe that their dream of playing on their own astro in front of their home crowds will soon be realised.

School Attendance by Grades 1 – 11 learners during and after the June 2014 and November Examinations The following is an instruction issued by the Western Cape Education Department regarding exams and learner attendance before, during and after the examinations. Please read carefully: 1.

The Western Cape Education Department is committed to ensuring the maximum use of teaching and learning time. It is, therefore, the responsibility of each school to protect teaching time and support learning for the full 201 school days each year, in accordance with the National Learner Attendance Policy.

2.

All school- and education district office staff are requested to note the following:

2.1 It is the responsibility of each school to plan its school programme for the period during and after the examinations up until the last day of the school term, and to inform all learners, parents and district offices accordingly.

2.2 Schools which offer Grades 4 to 11 are reminded that no examinations may start before 2 June 2014 and 17 November 2014. However, schools may apply to the district director for permission to start practical examinations earlier in certain subjects.

2.3 All learners are expected to be at school for a minimum of 5 hours per day during the examination period. Therefore, if a school starts at 8:00, the school cannot dismiss learners earlier than 13:00. In arranging this earlier closing time, the safety and transport of learners must be considered. It is, therefore, important that parents are informed beforehand so that they are able to make alternative arrangements.

2.4 All learners are required to attend school throughout the examination period, with the exception of Grade 12 learners - who will be entitled to 5 days off for study purposes before the start of the final National Senior Certificate examinations.

2.5 Schools may not inform learners that it is each learner’s own decision whether or not to come to school once the examinations have ended for the term or when they are not writing examinations or tests.

2.6 All teachers are expected to be at school for the full school day (35 hours per week) during the examination period, irrespective of whether they have invigilation duties or not.

Principals are reminded that they must submit their examination timetables to the IMG Manager at least four weeks before the start of the examinations. Education district officials will monitor the implementation of these directives.

Principals and school governing bodies are requested to pay special attention to the drawing up of their programmes during the examination periods, so that valuable time for teaching and learning is not lost.

Message from the Learner Council Tensions are running quite high among all of us, especially the matric group, as exams get underway. Hard work does pay off, so while preparing for the exams, be reassured that: this too will pass AND just three short weeks away lies a holiday!

The LC has been very busy raising money for our Nelson Mandela project and the school’s birthday present. The Mandela Project will be revealed at the start of next term when we celebrate the anniversary of his birth on 18 July. We have also given a lot of thought into the gift for our beloved school and, we believe, we have the perfect gift. We will present the gift soon, so, watch this space!

As many of us have been busy with revision, projects and assignments, our annual Zumbathon was unfortunately postponed and the LC will now hold this event shortly after the end of the exams.

Many of us are very excited about the recent announcement that the school will be organising an overseas tour to Italy and Belgium in 2015. Part time jobs and lots of saving lay ahead for those Rhenishers who want to participate in this.

Winter sports are in full swing and many of our teams have enjoyed repeated victories. Congratulations to all our hockey, soccer, squash and netball teams! Keep up the good work, girls and good luck for this weekend’s matchs against Wynberg Girls’!

The LC would like to wish all the girls good luck for the exams. Remember, “Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.�. So, work well, do not stress about the exams, build some relaxation time into your programme over the next three weeks and TRY your best.

Ms Personality 2014 With blaring music and much funfare, Ms Viljoen (emcee for the evening) led the jubilant contestants in the Ms Personality contest out onto the stage. The dancing girls were joined by the judges, Ms Davids, Mrs Forsyth and Mrs Keyser who were escorted to their seats by some very hunky young men. It was the difficult job of the judges to select thea junior and senior contestant who would walk away with the title.

For the first event, the contestants had to model ‘comfort’ clothes.

Confidently, contestants paraded down the red carpet in clothing that ranged from comfortable jeans to outrageous (but enviable) onesies and cow suits. The crowds went wild as the girls danced and tried to impress the judges with their bold moves.

This short ‘modelling show’ was followed by a ‘talent’ section where contestants were given a chance to perform or to say something that depicted their personality or what they stood for. Stand-up comedians, talented singers and imitation artists awed the audience with their creativity, their talent and their confidence. They also had us in stiches.

For the second half of the evening, the girls dressed to show off their more feminine side. We had a few very good looking young men to lead the contestants down the red carpet and, as with most Rhenish events at which boys are present, the crowd went wild.

All that remained was for the judges to select 5 junior and 5 senior finalists. The finalists were then all asked a ‘compelling’ question by Ms Viljoen. To a great deal of fanfare, Lebo Matseliso was crowned “Senior Ms Personality” while Tyra Nguke took the prize for “Junior Ms Personality”.

The quote of the evening came from Tyra. When asked, if she could choose any moment in history to which she could go back, what moment that would be, Tyra replied, “20 minutes ago”, when the dishy young guy had held her arm and walked her down the red carpet. To thunderous laughter and applause, said young man approached Tyra and yet again walked her up and down the red carpet.

Many thanks must go to Mrs Taylor and Mrs Fourie for organising the evening as well as to the tech team for the music and all the Rhenish helpers and judges that took part in organising this successful event.

Sports Results Friday 23 May Squash vs Bloemhof 1st team Rhenish Won 11-3 The 1st team squash result from the game played on Friday the 23rd May was very pleasing. The team played against our sister school, Bloemhof. Although we lost 3 games against the number 1 player, we managed to win the other three games with an outstanding score of 3-0 each. This led our final sore, a victorious 11-3 for Rhenish. We are very pleased with our results and we are looking forward to seeing what is in store for Rhenish squash.

With only two matches to go for the term, the first team hockey girls have shown great team work and managed to come away with a few successful results.

PAARL GIRLS’ (Saturday, 10th May)

A tough game against Paarl Girls’ lay ahead for the first team but they managed to pull through with a deserving 3-2 win.

The girls gave their all for the entire match, with great structure and team work shown.

NERINA (Tuesday, 13th May) Koshuis matches never fail to provide an exciting atmosphere for some good hockey. These weekly matches are a great way for the team to perfect their weaknesses and build on their strengths. Tuesday 13th May brought a match against Nerina. Not the best hockey played by the team, but, despite this they still came away with a 4-1 victory.

HERCHEL (Saturday, 17th May) The annual derby against Herschel is always very competitive. The team was energised and excited for what they knew would be a tough match. The game started off with a bang, with an early goal from us. With constant pressure and solid defence the Herschel girls battled to make a breakthrough. Unfortunately, two quick, simple goals in the last few minutes, meant an unlucky 2-1 loss for Rhenish. We certainly put in a great effort and were without a doubt the better team!

PAREL VALLEI (Saturday, 24th May) Saturday, 24th May, brought some tough, windy hockey conditions. The girls did not display their true hockey potential, lacking the needed urgency. As a result, the match ended in an unfortunate 1-0 loss.

The team realise not only is hard work needed to claim results, but also a positive, persevering mentality. Very often it is an attitude change that determines altitude!

With the Brothers Hockey Tournament approaching, there is no time to rest. The 1st team will be training throughout exams in aim of achieving their best results at the tournament.

On behalf of the 1st team hockey girls, I would like to thank all the supporters for their constant motivation and encouragement - it is always appreciated.

We would also like to say a BIG well done to our first team coach, Shannon Boucher as well as the second team coach, James Drummond, for their excellent performance during the Varsity Cup Hockey. They both displayed impressive skills and truly made their teams very proud!

I wish all teams the best of luck for the last two games of the term - keep striving for excellence and never give up until that last whistle blows!

Ash Rutherford (1st team vice captain) 2nd Team Hockey Report We drew 0-0 and were well matched against our opponents. It was a really good match and we defended very well on about 5 short corners. Defence was also strong on the many lifted shots at goal.

U16A Hockey Report The match against Parel Vallei started in extremely windy conditions. The first ten minutes were an even contest, but slowly the Rhenish team started to take control. We created various chances which were unfortunately not converted and the first half ended without a goal being scored.

The blistery conditions continued in the second half as our team exerted continuous pressure. The Parel Vallei team defended with a lot of urgency and passion and closed down any space in front of their own goal, making a breakthrough extremely difficult. As many short corners were awarded in our favour, we were not accurate enough.

It was really a game of missed opportunities as the final whistle blew with the score still level at 0-0. We were rather disappointed, but will have to learn from this and show an improved performance in our next match. We look forward to a better performance against Wynberg Girls’ this weekend.

U14C Hockey report We played against Parel Vallei on Friday 23 May. The final score was an unfortunate loss, 0 – 1, but the team successfully defended many more shots on goal and played really well. We will continue to work hard and train hard so that we can turn this into victory in our next match.
