Moving can be a daunting task and requires careful planning and preparation. ADT Security in the Western Cape suggests that you use a security checklist when viewing properties to find your potential new home. “Are there good quality locks on the windows and doors, and do they work properly? Do the ground floor windows have burglar bars? Are the driveway and pedestrian gates electronic and in good working condition? These are good questions to ask before moving day,” says Rob Dale, managing director of ADT Security in the Western Cape. Once the sale is concluded, it is very important that the new home owner is aware of all
the strangers who will be in and out of their old and new properties on moving day: ) If you are using a moving company, find out at what time, and how many of their staff you can expect at your home on the day. They should be dressed in uniform and be able to identify themselves at your request. ) It is always a good idea to have someone you trust around to keep a watchful eye during the move. If you can’t be around, arrange with a family member or friend to be there when the movers arrive to pack up your belongings and another person to be at your new home to oversee the offloading of goods. ) Always keep rare and valuable items such as jewellery, cameras and important docu-
ments out of sight. Transport these privately or leave them in the care of a trusted family member or friend until the move is completed. ) Make sure that every box is properly packed and sealed to ensure the safe transit of all your possessions, including fragile items. Each item must be clearly numbered so that nothing goes astray between properties. Dale adds that ensuring the security of the new house should not have to wait until everyone is settled in. He has the following suggestions to be followed before moving day: . Change all door and gate locks if there is anyuncertaintyaboutthewhereaboutsofspare keys. . Evaluate the condition of existing security
gates and burglar bars and, if necessary, replace them as soon as possible. . Consider an intercom with a monitor, or a peep-hole in the front door, so that visitors can be identified before they are allowed access. . Make sure that all the outside lights are working properly. . Introduce the members of the household to the neighbours. . Find out where the nearest police station is and whether the area has a neighbourhood watch. “Following these steps can enhance the peace of mind of any home owner,” says Dale. “It will also result in valuable connections with neighbours and local community policing forums.”

Entries open for 2015 Jaguar Simola hillclimb MOTORPRESS Entries for the 2015 edition of South Africa’s pre-eminent gentlemen’s racing event, the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb, are now open – and bound to sell out quickly. In mid-May, the quiet road leading up to the Simola Golf and Country Estate in Knysna, Western Cape, will transform into a motorsport spectacle. The sound of four, six, eight cylinders and more will echo across the hills, while more than 10 000 spectators
line the course to witness a variety of highspeed machines strut their stuff. The fun kicks off on 14 May, which sees the inaugural running of Supercar Thursday – an event where up to 50 supercar owners can take their high-performance machinery for a blast up the Simola Hill road. While this is a non-competitive event, with no prizes, it will still be timed. Classic Car Friday returns on 15 May, with 50 competitors battling it out in their historic machines for top honours. Spectators will be able to see a wide variety of fa-
mous classics in action on the Friday, including iconic Jaguar models such as the MK II and E-Type, competing in categories ranging from pre-war vehicles, all the way to 60s, 70s, and 80s-era racing cars. Of course, the highlight of the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb is the King of the Hill competition, which runs on 16 and 17 May. In this no-holds-barred timed event all manner of machines will have a chance to go for glory in their respective classes. Production cars, from the ordinary to 400-plus kilowatt sports cars like the Jaguar F-TYPE Coupé R, and purpose-built racing cars boasting outputs of more than 700 kW will thrill spectators as they scream up the hill for the coveted
King of the Hill title. The weekend will also see the running of the successful Jaguar Media Challenge, now in its second year. Five journalists will vie for the honour of being crowned South Africa’s fastest motoring scribe and having their name immortalised on the Alucat Cup. Last year’s winner, Stuart Grant, will return to defend his title from four challengers – with all five media driving suitably racy Jaguar XF R-Sports. Competitors can enter and read class regulations online, at www.speedfestival.co.za. General admission passes for spectators can be purchased at the gate for the duration of the event.

No sooner had our test car parked on my driveway and I got the first enquiry. “What is it?” went on loop even after I repeated “An Infiniti!” a few times. “No, no. What brand is it?” Sigh. “A fancy Nissan” finally quelled the incessant queries, quoting Toyota’s Lexus and the immense American popularity of these makes. The Q50 is roughly the size of an Audi A4 but it looks nothing like a German saloon; more like a modern Hyundai on acid. Most body panels have multiple folds to form a dynamic, flowing shape with sharp features in its face, heavily styled light clusters and a very unique chrome kink in its C (rear) roof pillar. Perhaps our car’s metallic red paint and ivory leather interior added to its stun factor because I purposefully parked it outside a department store and observed more than half of all passers-by doing a double take. Quite a few stopped, most stared at its logos and a few left greasy finger marks on the side windows. Available in your choice of three engines, two gearboxes and four trim lines, the car you see here is a Q50 Premium 2.0 turbopetrol Automatic. Thanks to a partnership with Mercedes-Benz, the 1 991cc engine (155 kW, 350 Nm) and seven-speed automatic gearbox are sourced from Stuttgart. Infiniti claims 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds (our best was 7.34), 245 km/h top speed and 7F/100 km average consumption from the 74F tank. Although our overall average was closer to 10F/100 km, I was pleasantly surprised by the Q50’s big 75F fuel tank and enormous boot – 500 litres. I’m confident that 8F/100 km will be possiblewithcarefuldrivingandwhileastart/stop system is standard, it re-engages in a rather harsh manner. Another quibble I had was with the Q50’s (optional) direct steering system, which has excessively quick responses and tends to make the car feel nervous. Sometime during our week of testing a friendly, local car guard came running after we’d parked near a crowded mall. Not to promote his services but to have a good look at this unusual specimen in his kingdom of white Japs and silver Germans. “Nice horse” he uttered after a lengthy inspection. Similar accolades were dished out inside the Q50, which comfortably houses four adults and spoils them with fine leather, rippled aluminium trim (wood also available), powered everything, superb climate control and more high-resolution screens than you can shake a USB stick at. Much like in Honda’s American-spec Accord, we found the dual dashboard monitors a tad bewildering (and dare I type it, excessive) with the audio quality just as tinny as that in the Honda. Very strange for a USbound car. Nonetheless, Q50 handles radio, CD, USB, ipods, Bluetooth and voice commands. Six airbags and a crowd of driver aids awarded the Q50 a five-star EuroNCAP rating while the optional “Safety Shield pack” in our test unit can either entertain or irritate you for hours with its proximity alarms, active lane keeping, blind spot hawk, intelligent cruise control, as well as collision warning or prevention. There are many more features on this car and as I’m running out of space, I suggest you visit an Infiniti dealership for a proper demonstration. Be sure to take one for a drive to experience its four-way drive mode selector, vicious brakes and impressive power delivery. I found the combination of low-down torque, nicely-stacked gears and well-trained shift paddles offers plenty of poke for you to cruise quietly, overtake safely or even leave a bit of rubber on the road. Combined with its eccentric looks and adaptive chassis, the Infiniti Q50 is quite the sports sedan. This 2.0T Premium starts at R430 000 and includes a 3-year/100 000 km warranty and 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan. More importantly, it also includes exceptional exclusivity as an enterprising traffic light vendor desperately tried to flog us a license disc holder. No such luck. Galimoto Media
