1-1 Olfactory Memory What do smells trigger? Location: Tainan South District Spring 2021

Spiritual Space Interpretation of Landscape Memory Retrieval

O

n this outskirts of the city, people walk down the grassy slope, shuttle indoors and outdoors, and use the smell as a trigger to evoke the personal memories that are usually buried in the heart.

1

THE IMAGINATION OF SITE At first, I made graphic and model to illustrate my interpretation of the site. In this triangular area, which is sunken at the edge of downtown and suburban cemetery, I visualized the memories left by people in the world into individual molecules, which accumulate, flow, and evaporate over time in this valley. I thougnt these movements is similar to the smell, so I decided to make this spiritual space feature with various smells that could trigger people's feelings and memories.

INTERACTION WITH LANDSCAPE

2

I set the main entrance on the west side, which is less traffic and a gentle slope. Rooftop platform's height is similar to the road, so people can easily walk on this platform to look around the surrounding scenery and feel the fragrance rising from below, and then go down layer by layer to get more experiences with smell. The building presents in an cross shape, so visiters can approach both grassy slope and water closely. The outdoor corridor between main building and annex building keeps the original natural terrain, and grows herb plants to enrich the smell perception.

There are two ways to get into the site.

Visiters could enjoy the scenery and feel the fragrance rising from chimney on rooftop platform.

The sense of smell can induce people's memories unconsciously, it can also trigger people's reactions such as alertness and relaxation. But a great feature of this sense is that it is easily fatigued and paralyzed. In order to let visitors feel the stimulation of various scents continuously, the flow will shuttle in outdoor, semi-outdoor and indoor spaces. In semi-outdoor spaces, the circulating air can relax the sense of smell and make people ready to feel. At the same time, when walking through semi-outdoor spaces, people can also get close to the natural landscape and get more interesting experiences.

Main entrance is the rooftop platform which people can easily approach. There're also another entrance could pass to the bottom directly.

The outdoor corridor keeps the original natural terrain and grows herb plants to enrich the smell perception. Visiters can see indoor activities as they walk down the trail.

The cantilever design allows people indoors to see the water closely, and semi-outdoor spaces allow people to get close to the natural landscape while resting their olfactory senses.

The showroom displaying various scents has the mezzanine and a tortuous space design, which can separate scents and create various experience.

The site is located at a T-junction. Guo Hua Street is a famous sightseeing route with all kinds of snacks, so there are many crowds and cars all day long. Zhong Ming Street is a residential area with less traffic and mostly pedestrians. This street house has a small-scale gallery as the main function, and supplements with soybean pudding stall that attract crowds, studio where artwork be created, and a small hostel where guests can experience the artistic atmosphere. All of these spaces interact with the gallery, creating an unusual experience. In addition, this street house also contains owner's residence.

SECTIONS After setting functions of the street house, I studied some cases that are also mix with various functions, observing vertical dimension and Case study behavioral interaction House for a Painter /DTR-studio architects f ro m t h e s e c t i o n . I t h e n ex p e r i m e n te d with how each space could relate to the gallery by drawing sections and making section models. In the end, I decided to set up a high ceiling, mezzanine corridor and a non-orthogonal wall to maximize the contact surface between the spaces while ensuring the comfortable height of each space.

This long and narrow street house is divided into two parts. The large windows on the left half create an open and transparent space and attract the attention of passers-by; the smaller windows on the right half provide both privacy and control of sight. Users on the right side can view the gallery's exhibits through the slightly inclined windows facing the display wall, while the studio can also directly lead to the gallery's mezzanine corridor to replace the exhibits or find inspiration.

There is a mirror between the hostel room on the second floor and the studio on the third floor. The guest can not only see finished artworks from the windows that face the gallery, but also get a glimpse of the process of creating artworks through this mirror.

The vertical flow from the lobby on the first floor to the hostel room on the second floor is a spiral slope, so that guests with luggage can easily go upstairs.

he community center that combines two unrelated functions and creates new behavioral patterns.

CURRENT SITUATION The existing community centers around the site are only used by a few residents, and their facade are opaque and cannot be seen from the outside.

THE NEEDS IN MODERN TIMES

The Perception of Space | Daily Ramble

Due to the changes of the times, few modern urban residents will gather in the public space to pass their leisure time, but will go to use the corresponding public facilities when they have specific needs. Therefore, I choose two public resources for citizens with clear functions: for light leisure sports such as parks, school sport fields, civil sports centers, and learning resources for knowledge acquisition such as libraries.

Due to the properties of the facilities, the activities of "leisure sports" and "knowledge exploration" are usually carried out independently. This design try to connect the two resources actively and make users automatically go on another activity after their initial activity. This action not only expands the diversity of community center functions, but also attracts more users, making it a place that can enhance the physical health and spiritual enrichment of citizens. Set up a shaded sunken plaza and a circular walkway with a length of more than 300 meters in this densely populated area, trying to supply more space for leisure sports.

Positioned as a "knowledge distribution center", it does not have a large number of collections. The operation form is to connect the nearby public libraries and switch collections frequently, then actively display and promote these resources.

The shaded sunken plaza gathers both local residents and tourists, people can eat , rest and engage in leisure sport activities.

The Perception of Space | Daily Ramble

Gentle slopes to the skywalk and large opening to the plaza.

When walking or jogging on the skywalk, people can see the frequently changed displays about theme books and art s at the same time. The vierendeel cantilever not only provides views towards the roundabout, but also shades the plaza below.

The park, grand stairs and multi-functional room are faced to the crowded food street, so crowd can flow and enter the community center for activities. The park with grand stairs allows people to stay and walk to the facilities across the road.

Using the existing path texture of the city, the site can connect the surrounding cultural space and become the center to create the city's artistic and cultural atmosphere. These spaces are connected by alleys that are less traffic, people could easily walk and cycle through these path.

Pedestrian arcade Brick paving alley

The Perception of Space | Cycle

The site is close to two circular bicycle paths detouring to the east and west of the city respectively, as well as the branch line of Cycling Route No.1 that connects counties. Thus, the site can become a relay link and support base for different levels of tourist routes.

CONCEPT A. Bike Compoments

B. Möbius strip

One of the characteristic of bike compoments is free assembly, I try to use it on my accommodation unit.

It symbolizes an endless cycle, therefore we should focus on the process. I extend the concept into a continuous experience, a connection of urban paths, and a cycle of daily habits.

The other characteristic is explicitness. Bike compoments could be seen clearly from the exterior. I want that the internal functions and activities can be known from the outside, so the distance between the community and the building can be shortened. 20

RELATIONSHIP WITH URBAN

STRATEGY OF MASS

As a MERIDA's strong point in Tainan, it is necessary to bring crowds in to the site. I tried to connect Hai An Road, which is suitable for bike riding and is connected with various bicycle paths, and Fu Qian Road that is crowded with people and leads to various tourist spots in the center of Tainan. So I cut a passage diagonally on the block, allowing bicycles and crowds going into the site naturally. The alley on the east of the site is paved with bricks, this kind of path is usually used by local residents. I widen the brick paving and connect two blocks, so when residents walk through the path, they would probably stay or enter the square at the intersection and go into the site.

The Perception of Space | Cycley

Continuity: The ramp with orientation allows people to move on to the next space naturally, and through the display along the main ramp, people can learn more about the brand products.

Explicitness: The cores are placed in the middle to have continuous boundary, and there are several semi-outdoor corridors and transparent skins to reduce the sense of distance between inside and outside. 21

In addition, the hot spring room has independent access to control the privacy. Guests can freely assemble the room with specific functions according to their needs.
