EILE August Edition!

Welcome to the August edition of EILE Magazine.

Our August edition is packed with lots to read and relax with. We have music from Beautiful Machines, Heiress to Atlas, Aaron Paul, and J GRGRY, fashion with Mark telling us how to wear green in all its iterations, and we also show some big men’s fashion from Bear World Magazine’s first Fashion Week.

Lucia Chappelle of California Dispatch examines the US presidential election campaigns of the major candidates and finds them wanting, and Frances Winston reviews some great films and Once The Musical for us. We also feature a new project from NI called Thinking About Thoughts, with headphones, for a silent event, and our health section looks at how to have healthy bones.

We have some information on events for Galway Pride, which is coming up fast as it begins on 15 August, some dates for Girlie Circuit, Arosa Ski Week and more on Travel to Cancun and Vegas.

Beautiful Machines San Francisco-based synth pop rock band, Beautiful Machines, have just released Bridges, their second of a three-album trilogy, following on from their debut album, Disconnect:: Reconnect

As the second part of a trilogy concept album, winner of the 2014 Independent Music Award for Album of the Year, cinematic synth pop/rock trio, Beautiful Machines, released their album, BRIDGES on June 17, 2016.

The LP signals an evolution for the band, with electronic hooks that are captivating and dreamy.

The band is comprised of a diverse group of musicians.

Founder, Conrad Schuman is an American songwriter, vocalist and guitarist, who experiments and infuses his pan-music study into his songwriting. Philosophicalleaning, he writes lyrics and

music about waking up as a society, reclaiming our power as free and creative beings, and about transcending the current out-of-balance humanity to embrace a more coherent and harmonious future.

Having toured Europe, VeliMatti Matilla is a Finnish DIY drummer and programmer, who designs and builds his own unique electronic drum kits and band visuals.

Stef Ku is a TaiwanAmerican classically-trained keyboardist, avant-garde soundscapist, and professional sound-healer.

Beautiful, intricate, technical, and euphoric music, amazing light shows, and inspiring live energy makes Beautiful Machines a band worth exploring.

Based in San Francisco’s Techa, Beautiful Machines takes on a modern futurist aesthetic, fused with their admiration for sci-fi elements, technology, philosophy and the individual creative mind. From Burning Man to San Francisco’s historical Great American Music Hall, each show is thoughtful and unique, featuring progressive visuals, costumes, interactive elements and audience engagement.

Conrad Schuman (vocals, guitar), Stef Ku (keys, backing vocals), and Veli-Matti Mattila (drums) took inspiration for their name from an Alphabet City album, Schuman’s previous band in Gainesville, FL. Built on a common appreciation for electronic music and philosophy, Beautiful Machines formed to create a sound that was both compelling and introspective.

They describe the concept of their music as a cosmological and philosophical one, whereby life and organism are beautiful machines. The cinematic synth rockers won the 2014 Independent Music Award for Album of the year, and have toured extensively along the west coast of the US. Bridges takes the band in a new direction, deepening their exploration of live analog/electronic music.

The album brings you through vast sonic landscapes and transformative themes, building on the band’s debut album, Disconnect : : Reconnect, highlightling a stylistic shift for the band.

As the second instalment in a concept album trilogy, Bridges tells a story of disconnecting from an old paradigm, and crossing a bridge to a new reality.

“Bridges symbolizes positive transformation and change,” says front man, Conrad

Schuman.

“This album is purposefully arranged to take the listener on a journey, like cycling through a Tron-grid landscape to launching into a euphoric stratosphere.”

As a true labour of love, the album was entirely self-produced. The second song on the record, ‘Million Miles’ is written from the perspective of an ancient vampire, who has traversed eons. The lead single, ‘Real Love’ describes the difficulty in exiting a long and intimate relationship and ultimately speaks to irreconcilable love

and wanting.

‘Real Love’ also pays homage to John Lennon’s song of the same title. As a thematic follow-up to the aforementioned track, ‘Free’ explores the new possibilities in the aftermath of a break up and is an anthemic call to action in seizing freedom and liberation. The sixth track, ‘Sunrise Song’ is a soundscape of Hatsuhi, Japan’s New Years Day celebration told through the perspective of a father holding his newborn child, representing the beginning of new chapters in life.

Bridges is awash with soaring vocals, electronic sounds and deep meaningful lyrics that are leading to a burgeoning following for the band, and they well deserve it.

Heiress To ATLAS Heiress To Atlas chat to us about their new, selfproduced, electro-pop EP, Spark, how the duo got together over the Internet, and then started writing songs about the loss and alienation felt when a relationship fails Los Angeles-based electro-pop duo, Heiress To Atlas, have just released their debut EP, Spark, an impressive collection of 4 evocative, and powerful anthems. The brainchild of Australian powerhouse singer, Vidya Sethu, and New York producer, Marc Thomas, the Spark cleverly captures the difficulties of love and loss, while holding an upbeat, hopeful resonance.

The band was born when the duo met over the Internet, and decided there was no turning back. Vidya and Marc capture the keen sense of loss in heartbreak, with soaring melodies that define that feeling of alienation that comes with shattered relationships.

The self-produced EP contains four songs, lead singles Alien Boy and Bullet, Blaze and Well Enough. Spark chronicles the start and end of something “a little more than a fling, and a lot less than a relationship – a start, a ‘Spark’, of something that could’ve been” explains Sethu.

Not singing about your typical love story, the duo reflects on what might have been, while ultimately recognising their own strength. The third song on the EP, Blaze, highlights this resilience, as Sethu challenges her anxieties by repeatedly shouting “let it blaze” in the chorus. Blaze is near and dear to Sethu’s heart, as she wrote it to help overcome personal struggles.

“I wrote this to myself as an encouragement to not be afraid of life, and to take creative and emotional risks” Sethu comments.

The final song, Well Enough, is a passionate and commanding kiss-off track. Spark was recorded and mixed by expert Andrew Chavez (Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys) and mastered by Seth Von Paulus (Linda Perry, Celine Dion).

Soulful and atmospheric, their sound is sometimes brooding, sometimes restless, always laced with hope. Since the project’s conception in Summer 2014, the duo have gone on to play several venues and events in Los Angeles, including The Airliner, Harvelle’s, Pancakes & Booze LA, Chocolate & Art LA, The Dresden, State Social House & Los Globos. They released their first EP, Spark, in July 2016.

Vidya says she was drawn to music further back than she can consciously remember, singing before the age of three, and going on to pursue vocal lessons and choir as soon as she was old enough. While music has always been one of her greatest passions, she had not initially intended to pursue a career in music. Feeling dissatisfied with her studies at Yale, she relocated to Los Angeles, where she began auditing classes at the Musicians Institute, before actually enrolling on a course to pursue music full time.

This dedicated pursuit has led to Heiress To Atlas’ ability to write edgy electropop tracks that sound upbeat, but have deeper soulful lyrics still managing to have a hopeful upswing. They let you know that all is not lost because of a shattered relationship, and things can (and do) get better!

J GRGRY Indie-pop artist, J GRGRY, tells EILE about his turbulent journey in the music world so far, and his latest single, the upbeat Summer anthem, eFlower, which is, paradoxically, based on his dark and troubled past Originally from Seattle, Indie-pop singer/songwriter J GRGRY has just released his new single, eFlower, an evocative upbeat track, with a sombre message hidden underneath. The singer courageously exposes a vulnerable past, over soaring melodies, dynamic synth, and cutting percussion.

Opening with echoes of nature, mixed with an ethereal sonic soundscape, J GRGRY’s latest single, eFlower, is an absolute indie pop gem.

Following his debut single, Rare Poisons, eFlower is now the second release from his upcoming EP, due out this Autumn. A breathtaking work of pop, with heartbreaking undertones, this latest single 14 EILE Magazine

contrasts the beauty of dark and light aspects of life.

With bright and airy instrumentation, the track is an exploration of desire, with an unexpected twist. eFlower was produced by Robert Cheek (Band Of Horses, Tera Melos, and Deftones) and mixed by Mark Needham (The Killers, Imagine Dragons, and Fleetwood Mac).

The stirring hook, “You make me so nervous I shake, I wanna be near you every second I’m awake,” immediately lends the imagination to the thought of unrequited love. However, J GRGRY is discussing his struggle with alcoholism and addiction.

“The song touches on the aspect of being secretive and not letting people know how far down the road of alcoholism I was,” he comments.

“The chorus is hard for me to sing live sometimes because I

get so emotional when I think about how my hands would shake every day before I had my first shot and how dark life was for me then.”

Gregory signed his first recording contract at 17 years old, as a member of Dolour, an indie-pop act that exploded out of Seattle’s post-grunge heyday. Hearing his songs on the radio at that young age, he was hooked: Music was to be his everything. His intense dedication has carried him through countless phases of artistic exploration, and just as many hardships, personal and professional.

While still a teenager, solo ambitions took Gregory to Sacramento, CA, where he immersed in the local scene, running an underground venue, and finding an ally in Jonathan Davis of Korn.

With Dolour, he’d witnessed the major-label showcase machinery of Los Angeles, which he rejected by signing to Davis’ Elementary Records

He recorded an album on Davis’ bus, while Korn toured the US, but a reshuffling at Geffen, Elementary’s parent company, derailed what would’ve been his first solo album. A year later, he landed a deal with Hollywood Records, but his band balked at the contract, and split.

After the merger which left the band without a record deal and a manager, J GRGRY moved to Arizona, where his alcoholism and depression began to fester. Growing tired of the desert state, he sold his possessions and bought a one-way ticket to Italy, where he ran with a homeless crowd.

Pulse Records, a division of Downtown, put him in the studio with Josh Abraham, who’d produced Pink and Weezer, but those tapes were shelved, due to funding problems at the 16 EILE Magazine

He had a change of heart after learning of a death in the family, which brought him back to Seattle. He was shocked into reality—and

sobriety, a big change after downing a fifth of Jack Daniels every day for a decade. Gregory realized that after so much struggle, it would be an injustice to throw in the towel on his dream.

He had more music in him, and speaking to his father, decided to tackle his addiction and improve his mental health.

A chance encounter in South Seattle brought Gregory together with an old friend, Robert Cheek, who played guitar during Gregory’s showcasing days and, more recently, had engineered albums by Band of Horses, Deftones and dozens of other great artists. As it turned out, they lived a few houses from each other.

Brothers in arms, they were grateful to reunite.

In the fall of 2015, Gregory spent a week recording with drummer Andrew King at Panoramic Studios in Stinson Beach, California, a laid-back and state-of-the art facility, and another week Cheek’s studio inside an old Sonic Boom Records store in Seattle. The strength of Gregory’s songs convinced Mark Needham, a veteran of the Los Angeles rock scene who has worked with Steely Dan and the Killers, to engineer. These eight songs define Joe Gregory in the present moment. They echo the Linn-drum-and-synthesizer songcraft of ‘80s hitmakers like Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode and Phil Collins, spun anew for an iPhone generation, infused equally with dark ambiance and hummable hooks.

For his recent breakout performances in Seattle, and leading to major festival and showcase gigs through the summer and fall, Gregory has drawn together a full band of compatriots.

King and Cheek are on-board, as is powerhouse Seattle guitarist Ryan Leyva. Like Gregory, each of these players is a veteran of the industry, relentless in their drive to create and share their music. To reflect their contribution to Gregory’s vision and the collective effort of four equal individuals, the band performs under the moniker J GRGRY. Less Joe Gregory, more of everyone else.

As personal as J GRGRY’s music is, dredged from the heartbreak and desperation of Joe Gregory’s past, these songs are also universal, the hallmark of great writing. One after another, they speak to challenge and triumph, addiction and redemption. It’s the same all-too-human cycle that has brought J GRGRY, together with their audience, to the here and now.

While the content of eFlower comes from a dark and difficult place, it is juxtaposed by the hopeful and light tone of the music. The sheer resounding quality of J GRGRY’s vocals, combined with his sharp lyricism, instantly captures attention of his audience, who are quickly becoming his fanbase.

Aaron Paul Many of you will already know singer/songwriter Aaron Paul from his days with the successful, chart-topping band, World Apart. Now, following his chart-topping 2014 debut album, Raw, he has released an unofficial single, Shine Bright, from his new album, Electric Erotic London-born, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter, Aaron Paul, has a new release, Shine Bright, the first single of his new album, Electric Erotic (release: Summer 2016).

Pop-Dance singer/songwriter Aaron Paul has recently released Shine Bright, the unofficial single from his upcoming sophomore album, Electric Erotic due out later this summer.

This is a fresh summer, laid-back, electronic pop R&B groove, produced by Stormby, with vocals mixed and arranged by ‘Virgo’ Paul Bennett.

The sub-story in the video for the track shows a young man finally taking control of his life, and refusing to continue to be beaten down by his job and his mean boss, and setting off for a brighter future!

Shine Bright was written by Aaron, and the video was directed by Machicote (T.G.F.M.T. Productions) and edited by Ana Leyva. In the coming weeks, Aaron will be releasing the official single from Electric Erotic.

Aaron was previously lead singer with boy band, World Apart, when Simon Cowell became interested and placed him as front-man, leading the band to chart success.

London born and Brooklyn-based, Aaron Paul returns to the music scene with Electric Erotic, due out later this summer. The chart-topping pop-dance recording artist and songwriter is eager to introduce the new and improved Aaron Paul.

We were first introduced to Aaron Paul as the lead singer of the internationallyrenowned pop boy band, World Apart. The group soon came to the attention of Arista Records Executive, Simon Cowell (American Idol, Britain’s Got Talent and X-Factor).

Impressed by his pure voice, natural performance skills and fun personality, Simon positioned Aaron as lead vocalist/front-man, and led the group to their chart success.

The group had a unprecedented chart-run of top 30 UK singles including: Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel, ( featured on the soundtrack in the huge blockbuster and academy award winning movie The Queen), Everlasting Love, Wonderful World’(written by Aaron Paul & fellow band member Patrick Osbourne), and their biggest hit, Could it be I’m Falling in Love, and many more.

album, RAW. The album produced the edgy and in your face club-banger, PnP (Party N Play) as well as the #1 Pop Dance single and National anthem, I Don’t Care, Aaron’s first #1 song as a solo artist ever.

“This is a moment that I will never forget,” says Aaron.

“I could not believe that a song that I wrote and sung from the heart, would become such a powerful anthem across the board…it still feels amazing,” he adds.

Aaron Paul has been busy adding final touches to his sophomore album, Electric Erotic.

The album will include production and remixes from some of today’s finest producers, including Swedish-born UK-based synth/pop Billboard chart remixer ‘STORMBY’, New York’s own, Peter Tanico (E.39 NYC), Reggae legend ‘Virgo’ Paul Bennett, and super music producer Peter Monk, just to name a few.

Shine Bright is the first un-official release from the upcoming Electric Erotic. The laidback and not-so-in-your-face song will include several remixes, and is now available on iTunes.

“This is one of those sit back and drive songs and I wanted this song to embody some of my R&B influences and combining current electronic sounds,” says Aaron.

“I simply wanted to peel back the layers and groove” he adds.

Let’s play a game.

Pick a piece of clothing for men.

Now, really think about where it has come from.

I bet there is a solid chance that it has done a tour in the armed forces. Am I right?

Just look at the T-shirt. This was an item that was issued to sailors to use as underwear in the 19th century, while bomber jackets were used to keep pilots warm while they were at a high altitude. And then there was the trench coat. Do I even need to start? So I guess you could say that it’s really not all that surprising that some form of the military pops up every season.

And if we see militaryinspired clothing, then we are bound to see the colour green a couple of times.

There is no real surprise there now is there? The colour green is suited to utility wear. That is why you will always see lots of green items, with zips, pockets and even campsite fabrics in the hue.

But, just like every other colour, there are many applications for a green colour-palette, with many different shades.

It’s time to leave all those baggy greens in the barracks. There is no doubt that there is a strong army fatigue trend, but it is moving in a slimmer direction. All you have to do is look to the catwalk to see the proof. Burberry Prorsum took a suave direction, with all their suits hugging their models, while Chanel had perfectly tailored two-pieces.

These days, blue is the most popular colour when it comes to tailored suits. However, green is the always there to jazz things up - subtly used of course. We don’t want to look like some kind of leprechaun now do we? Green is a touch less formal, so you can afford to break so many rules with it without breaking a sweat.

Muted greens are always going to be an easy wear. There is a reason that they are picked for camouflage after all. If you want to stand out, then you will have to pick something that’s going to be a little more dazzling.

Green is the perfect base for any paler shades. You just have to work it with the right items, and then you will have no problem standing out.

In most cases, monochrome is the right choice. But sometimes, just sometimes now, it’s far too sunny for all black. That’s when green steps in, especially when you can’t wear all-white to that barbecue you have been waiting to go to for months.

Experimenting with prints and shapes is so much easier to pull off when the colours can’t clash, and one colour that looks great head-to-toe is khaki.

The reader immediately gets a picture of how Malcolm Robert Andrew McLaren came to be a manager who took risks, when they read about his grandmother, Rose Corre Isaacs’ and her influence on him. Rose told him that ‘bad was good’, and McLaren described her as ‘demonic’.

Eccentric, determined, and with a staunch stance against conformity, Isaacs moulded the young McLaren from early on in life. She was very controlling, and even wanted Vivienne Westwood to abort her and McLaren’s child, so there are parts where Isaacs didn’t come across well, to say the least.

The book speaks about McLaren’s sexuality and love-life. For the most part, in terms of his love 26 EILE Magazine

life, it centres on his long-term relationship with designer, Vivienne Westwood, with whom he lived and had a son, and with whom he owned a shop on the King’s Road, in London.

The shop changed names many times, from Let It Rock to World’s End, but was always a beacon of light for people who liked to dress differently from fashion in the high street.

There seemed to have been a great love there between McLaren and Westwood for a long time. They appeared to be very similar people with the same interests, and they gravitated towards each other.

As a manager, McLaren came across as exploitative of his artists.

Following his work with The New York Dolls, he went on to make his name with The Sex Pistols, before managing acts such as Adam Ant and Bow Wow Wow.

But I think, as a manager, McLaren made more of a positive impact than negative. He was incredibly brave, willing to take risks and do things differently, which is refreshing in the music industry, and I would imagine his style of management has inspired many managers today, which is very good for music overall.

The book also speaks about McLaren’s admiration of Guy Debord, the story of Sid Vicious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, which ended in tragedy, the infamous Sex Pistols’ expletive-laden interview with Bill Grundy, and McLaren’s association with Ronnie Biggs, who took part in the Great Train Robbery.

The Sex Pistols recorded a song with Biggs called No One Is Innocent (A Punk Prayer By Ronnie Biggs) which reached the UK Top Ten. Mcleay also writes about the band’s most famous hit, God Save The Queen.

An incident that stuck very much in my head after reading this book was where Sid Vicious is said to have thrown a glass at the stage when punk group, The Damned, were onstage, playing at the Punk Special a.k.a the Punk Festival.

A 17-year-old girl had been near the stage, and some of the glass got in her eye, leaving her blind in one eye. McLaren’s response to what happened was a bit sickening:

achievement outweighed it completely.”

The final chapters deal with McLaren’s death, funeral, and legacy. It was interesting to see that McLaren and Westwood had remained close, and she was there at his funeral, throwing a wreath onto the coffin of the father of her eldest son. His partner, Young Kim, was also there, and it must have been so difficult saying goodbye to the man she loved.

An enthralling warts ‘n’ all account of McLaren’s life, which is written by Macleay in a very natural, storytelling way.

Unputdownable.

Bear World Magazine’s First Summer Fashion Week Celebrates Fashion for The Bigger Man Bear World Magazine, the magazine for the Gay Bear community, is celebrating the success of its first ever Summer Fashion Week, which focused on fashion for the bigger man.

The week featured a photo shoot in New York City using plus-sized models, and featuring brands which tailor specifically for the larger man. Quality, comfort and confidence were the week’s keywords for the week.

Fashion has long frozen out people in larger sizes, leaving them to hunt around cheaper stores for ill-fitting clothes. It has been a long-held belief that the average consumer finds big people unattractive.

Therefore, they believe that people will see their clothes as unattractive if displayed on a larger person.

Thankfully, the tide seems to be turning with the introduction of more average-sized models.

New York Fashion Week 2015 saw women with real curves work the 28 EILE Magazine

runway, and then in late 2015, Zach Miko became the first plussized male model for Target.

Bear World Magazine is a magazine aimed at a gay community called ‘bears’.

Bears are typically larger guys with beards. They wanted to celebrate all that is sexy and healthy about a fuller figure, and for too long their readers have been those people forced to buy ill-fitting clothes online.

They wanted to be at the forefront of plus-sized male fashion, so they grouped together a number of brands that tailor specifically for larger men, some sexy chunky male models, and held their own fashion shoot in The Paul Hotel, New York City!

The shoot formed part of their Summer Fashion Week, where they featured numerous brands of clothes, accessories and personal care items.

Bear World Magazine Editor, Robin Gray, said: “For too long larger guys have had to endure the discomfort of poorly fitting clothes in order to look good. Well, we hope that our readers will enjoy the products we featured and be happy looking fashionable while feeling comfortable in clothes made for guys of their size. We all know that when our clothes fit and look good, we feel better in ourselves.�

Healthy Bones Brian Rochford tells us what to do to maintain healthy bones, especially in later life As we get older, our bones become less dense, so it is extremely important to maintain good, strong, healthy bones throughout our lives.

When we are younger, we are strengthening our bones, but as we get older, our job is to maintain the bones we have built up.

Bone mass, in the majority of people, reaches its peak at around the age of 30 years. As time passes, your bones begin to lessen in bone mass. The denser your bones are by the time you reach the age of 30, the less likely you will be to develop conditions like osteoporosis (brittle bones).

Bone health can be affected positively or negatively for a number of reasons: 1. Exercise routine - Taking regular exercise can lower the risk of illnesses like osteoporosis. Exercises like walking, jogging, and stair-climbing, all help to strengthen your bones. It is also good to include weight-training exercises in your routine if you can.

Always consult your doctor before beginning an exercise routine.

2. Diet - It is important to include plenty of calcium in your daily diet.

Soy-based produce like tofu, vegetables like kale and broccoli, and nuts like almonds are all good sources. Orange juice that has been fortified with calcium, and also sesame tahini, are foods that can help you get more calcium into your daily diet, and don’t forget that your body requires vitamin D in order to absorb calcium.

3. Substance use - If at all possible, keep away from substances like tobacco and over-use of alcohol.

Research seems to suggest the use of tobacco can contribute to weakening your bones, and further research also suggests the possibility of alcohol limiting the body’s ability to absorb calcium properly.

It is important to emphasise the role of nutrition regarding the maintenance and health of your bones. Some of the vitamins and minerals that you should take are calcium, magnesium, Vitamin D, Vitamin K and Vitamin B12. Vitamin D is really important for healthy, strong bones, as it is necessary

for the absorption of calcium, and may also provide other health values, like protection against colds, and helping people cope with depression.

So start today and increase your consumption of calcium. This will not only improve your teeth and your bones, but will also benefit the functioning of your muscles, and help your blood pressure.

Vitamin K, another important vitamin, is commonly associated with blood clotting.

However, it is also important in other ways, as it assists your body in the production of proteins for healthy bones.

Put exercising at the top of your list of things to do every day. It has been suggested that

living a sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of osteoporosis. Exercise is such an important factor in creating bone density, and is also necessary for the improvement and maintenance of your health.

The categories of exercise best for the health of your bones are weight-bearing exercises.

Walking, stair-climbing, running, even jumping can all help to make the bones denser and stronger. It is also worth noting that resistance training with weights can help to improve bone strength.

good it’s excellent, but when it’s not, it veers the wrong side of turgid. Overall, this is an enjoyable romp, but it won’t have you on the edge of your seat, and there aren’t enough twists and turns to keep you glued.

This sees Bourne still hiding underground, while the CIA continue to hunt him. When his old ally, Nicky Parsons (Stiles) shows up saying she has found some information about his father, he is obviously intrigued. But the agency has been watching her, and she has inadvertently led them to him.

When she is killed, he takes the flash-drive containing the files she spoke of, and has them decrypted, but this only serves to lead them to him once more.

Now on the run again, and trying to find out who was responsible for his father’s death, he finds an unlikely ally in the CIA’s head of Cyber Security, Heather Lee

Damon isn’t really stretched in the role, but turns in a good performance, Lee Jones is something of a cliché here, while Vikander is wasted in a role that could have been far more kick-ass.

However, these movies are not about stunning performances, and fans won’t be disappointed. Greengrass may have something of a formula when it comes to these movies, but ‘if it ain’t broke’ and all that. The story is somewhat weaker than previous offerings, as they had pretty much wrapped up Bourne’s story last time around, but it is really only there to serve as a catalyst for the action scenes.

Unfortunately, this isn’t as thrilling as it thinks it is, and it does drag in parts. When it’s

Directed by: Jaume Collet-Serra Starring: Blake Lively, Óscar Jaenada, Brett Cullen, Sedona Legge Don’t let the fact that there are a few castmembers listed above fool you. This is pretty much a one-woman show for Blake Lively.

For most of the just under 90 minutes running-time, she is on screen alone. Well, her, and a great white shark!

She plays medical student, Nancy Adams, who, following her mother’s death, travels to a secluded beach in Mexico that she had told her about. Initially, it appears to be paradise, and everything that she anticipated. She rides some waves, chats with a couple of other surfers, and generally relaxes.

As the other two leave the beach, she decides to catch one last wave. This proves a mistake, as she encounters the aforementioned great white shark, and is forced to crawl to safety on a whale carcass, before making her way to a reef 200 yards from shore. Alone, and with no means of communication, she must keep her wits about her, to try and escape the predator and make it back to the beach alive.

writing, however, is a bit disjointed, with a huge amount of back-story being thrown at the audience, which distracts from the action.

This does have some jump out of your seat moments, but it doesn’t sustain the tension throughout, and, at times, it loses the viewer before drawing them back in. Unfortunately, you never really regain the momentum. The final big action scene does have some great moments, although it’s no Jaws.

The Shallows is entertaining enough if you want to switch off and look at pretty scenery for a while. It doesn’t demand too much of the viewer, and it isn’t a taxing watch. And don’t worry – it is unlikely to put you off going into the water!

To be fair, it is only the presence of Lively that elevates this somewhat above B movie.

The premise isn’t a new one, and the ‘man (or woman) against natural predator’ tale has been done dozens of times before. That said, Lively does throw herself into this with gusto, and really pushes herself physically.

The surfing shots are stunning, and, on the whole, the cinematography is excellent. The

Directed by: Paddy Breathnach Starring: Héctor Medina, Jorge Perugorría, Luis Alberto García, Renata Maikel Machin Blanco, Luis Manuel Alvarez, Paula Andrea Ali Rivera This movie has been on quite a journey before its cinema release. It was shortlisted for nomination for the best foreign language film at last year’s Oscars, and narrowly missed out on being selected.

It did, however, win the Audience Choice Award at the Audi Dublin International Film Festival, and it has received widespread acclaim.

What is even more extraordinary is, that although this movie is in Spanish, writer Mark O’Halloran (Adam and Paul, Garage) doesn’t speak the language. Despite this, he has written one of the most poignant and moving stories you are likely to see committed to screen this year.

Medina plays Jesus, a hairdresser and sometimes rent-boy, who dreams of being a drag performer, just like those in the Havana nightclub he works in. Encouraged by Mama (García) he finally gets a chance to take to the stage.

However, just as he begins to

find his feet as a performer, his estranged father, Angel (Perugorría) returns, and makes his disapproval of his son’s lifestyle known. Setting up home with Jesus, he quickly turns his life on its head, constantly berating the young man for his life choices.

Despite the presence of numerous drag-queens, this is not glamorous. It is gritty and grimy. Medina gives an amazing performance as Jesus.

He manages to combine a naiveté with a world weariness that you don’t often see in one so young. He is very much the focus of the story, and when O’Halloran makes a cameo appearance as a sex-tourist who picks him up, you will actually feel grubby watching him (for the record O’Halloran is a lovely guy and not in the least sleazy in real life).

From the very beginning, you feel for Jesus, and find yourself wishing there was some way to help him out of the vicious circle he has become entrapped in. Indeed, the entire cast is wonderful, and García has a couple of amazing scenes as Mama that will blow you away.

basis in a macho society. The re-emergence of Angel only serves to reinforce what the close-knit gay community depicted actually go through in real life.

This is tragically beautiful. It is a difficult subject matter, dealing with not only the father/son relationship, but also homophobia and the issues faced by young gay men, but it never feels sorry for itself. It has a dignity and charm that dilutes the seedier moments, and really keeps you engaged.

Deeply affecting, this will stick with you long after the credits roll, and it is a beautiful piece of work that is truly deserving of all the praise that has been heaped on it.

Review: Once The Musical at The Olympia Theatre

By Frances Winston When John Carney set out to make a sweet film about a lovelorn musician, he could never have anticipated the juggernaut that it would become. Having won the best original song Oscar in 2007, it also spawned this musical, which has become a triumph in its own right, winning numerous awards including eight Tony Awards.

With a book by acclaimed playwright, Enda Walsh, the show has struck a chord with audiences around the world, so it is unsurprising that it has returned to the Olympia Theatre for another run. The film is extremely simplistic, which you would imagine makes it ideal for theatre, and Walsh has admitted that the story won him over.

The basic story involves Dublin musician, ‘Guy’s’ encounter with a Czech woman (‘Girl’) who needs her Hoover repaired. He discovers that she also plays music, and the pair of them bond over song-writing. However, she has a young child, and her husband is back in her homeland.

Meanwhile, he is still pining after his lost love who has emigrated. Believing he should go after his woman, Girl helps him organise a bank loan to record a demo of his work, before flying out to be reunited with his old flame.

In this production, American Sam Cieri takes on the role of Guy, made famous in the film, while Megan Riordan plays Girl. Cieri has a wonderfully gravely voice that is perfectly suited to the show’s soundtrack, and his Dublin accent is spot on. Meanwhile, Riordan is beguiling, and extremely funny, as Girl, and has a warmth about her that immediately draws you in.

They have a fantastic chemistry, and their on-stage relationship is totally believable.

They are ably supported by an ensemble cast, who sit on the sidelines waiting for their moments to jump in and out of the additional roles that pepper the story. However, their main role is contributing to the soundtrack. Each actor plays an instrument live on the stage,

and this just serves to add to the urgency of the show.

This is not a musical in the traditional sense of the word. There are no ‘jazz hands’ or dance rountines, and the songs aren’t there to move the story along, but rather to articulate what a particular character is going though.

Although confined to a stage space, this really expands on the film, and there is a lot more humour in it than the movie. In fact, there are so many funny moments, that the highly emotive scenes really hit you harder. Above all, there is a real party atmosphere throughout the show, with even the most down-in-the-dumps character using music as an escape.

Uplifting, moving, and hilarious, even those who abhor musical theatre should find merit in this. A wonderful show that will resonate long after you leave the theatre.

Beneath the avalanche of balloons that fell on the U.S. Democratic National Convention, in celebration of the nomination of Hillary Clinton to be the country’s first female president, the sounds of muzzled discord could barely be heard.

The California delegation’s contingent of Bernie Sanders’ supporters had been one of the centers of the protest actions that played out sporadically throughout the convention.

Dissenters’ concerns, about Clinton’s policy positions, were exacerbated by emails published by WikiLeaks, confirming their suspicions that Democratic National Committee (DNC) officials had colluded to weight the process in Clinton’s favor.

Despite the resignation of DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Shultz (Florida), substantial victories in platform negotiations, and the ultimate endorsement from Sanders, many of them left the convention disillusioned, disaffected, and still defiant.

In many ways, the Democrats offered LGBT constituents a dream convention: no doubts about the party’s support for our rights, versus the Republicans’ most virulently homophobic platform in history; a gaggle of LGBT speakers, inclusive promotional messages and endless ally shout-outs, versus one ‘first ever’ out, albeit tepid, oration from PayPal mogul, Peter Thiel, and Donald Trump’s vow to protect us

from foreign terrorism if not from the home-grown variety; and a record number of LGBT delegates at a gathering that displayed diversity at every level, versus an almost uniformly white crowd, a proverbial pig that even the LGBT Log Cabin Republicans have been hard-pressed to put lipstick on.

Nor would you find many LGBT delegates among the disgruntled minority. The impressive field of LGBT delegates was largely recruited to serve by the DNC’s own LGBT outreach committee. It was no easy trick for such Party activists to find those willing to represent Sanders in the pool of stalwarts they had to draw from, so the angriest Sanders holdouts were mostly newbies to the Democratic operation – like their leader – attending the family reunion as secondcousins-once-removed with questionable lineage.

Their chants were systematically drowned out by Clinton’s organized legions, some were ejected from the main hall, and ended up clashing with police outside.

Not a few Sanders Californians came home feeling like the Democratic Party was just another tentacle of the

oppressive power structure.

Walking out of the convention – and away from Clinton’s candidacy – isn’t such a big deal to those who didn’t come with any ingrained commitment to the Party … even if that means seeing Trump elected president. What is devastating is the belief that the captains of their revolution simply abandoned the cause, and left their dreams of breaking through a recalcitrant system to die on the side of the road called ‘Business As Usual’.

If I could offer any words of comfort, when things get like this, I always remember the above poem by Diane di Prima, from her “Revolutionary Letters, 1968-1971.” Clearly it’s not just the insular madness of the U.S. election cycle. If you’re not experiencing ‘transitional years’, please write in and let me know where you are (you might include a link to a visa application)! Wading through the sludge of the out-going order is part of the ‘heavy dues’ we have to pay.

The changes we have won are not small. The transformative impact the Sanders campaign has had on the Democratic Party, and on Clinton’s positions, is real.

We should never accept change as a sedative, but if change can be quick, there’s nothing revolutionary about an addiction to its comparatively instantaneous gratification. One election campaign is one battle, “… revolution / will take A while.”

In fact, it’s been taking a while – remember di Prima wrote this poem in the late 60s-early 70s, and as far as I can tell, it’s still the same revolution. Perhaps the continent has sprouted by now, perhaps ‘America’ – or whatever nation-state or state of consciousness you happen to inhabit – is starting to begin by now, but there’s still quite a long road ahead to revolution.

How can Sanders’ Californians possibly move down that road?

I am saying that giving up one strategy, adapting to the situation, and creating a new strategy is the way every step – and there are plenty of steps - towards revolution is achieved. Take the wins, take the losses, figure out what to do next based on short and long-term consequences, learn from what you did, don’t be afraid to toss out something that

Galway Pride Festival 2016: Only A Few Days To Go! Some events for your diary With only a few days to go, Galway is awash with anticipation for the 2016 Galway Pride Festival!

17th - Wednesday sees talks from Pat Hagarty of the West Sligo Family Resource Centre, and Elena Vaughan from the HIV Stigma Study. “Finding the words” will look at coming-out, and how parents can support a recently-out child, and the “HIV Stigma Update” will do just that, update, while also discussing the difference between being HIV+ and being ‘undetectable’.

After the flag raising ceremony on Monday there will be an official launch party at the Harbour Hotel at 8pm. Admission is free, and here you’ll find out about all the events, meet the committee, and have the chance shake hands and thank our sponsors and partners who have made this unique event possible.

New Show in London’s West End ‘Exposure The Musical’

Exposure is a new musical now playing in London’s West End, that ‘will capture your heart, and just maybe your soul’, although it has divided critics into lovers or haters of the show. For example, the Telegraph’s critic said it was a soulless take on Faustus that was ‘diabolically bad’, whilst at the same time praising the performances of the cast. On the other hand, ShowsInLondon have said it is “The best new show in the West End this Summer”.

The story is another take on the Faustian theme of ‘selling your soul to the devil’ when young photographer Jimmy Tucker, already a top photographer, faces the age-old dilemma of choosing between his principles and making large amounts of money. This dilemma arises when a stranger commissions him to photograph the seven deadly sins alive and kicking in today’s London.

“But in a break-neck race through the night, a series of extraordinary encounters involving girlfriends, family history, and the intoxicating cult of celebrity begin to reveal that there’s a whole lot more at stake than just money”.

New Irish documentary, ‘Strange Occurrences in a small Irish village’ will open in Irish cinemas August 26th.

An examination of the phenomenon of the Knock shrine, the film comes from the filmmakers behind award-winning One Million Dubliners.

In August 1879, fifteen people in the small village of Knock, Co Mayo, claimed to witness an apparition of the Virgin Mary.

After two official inquiries, the village was declared a Marian Shrine. Today, Knock’s 2,000 residents welcome over one million pilgrims annually.

Directed by Aoife Kelleher, Strange Occurrences In A Small Irish Village opens in Irish cinemas on August 26th. The film’s title is derived from the international press coverage at the time.

The film develops a fascinating, vibrant portrait of the phenomenon by examining the vast patchwork of individuals and

LGBTQ Travel and Tour Operators and Promoters It has long been recognised that Travel and Tourism play an integral role in the economic development of a country, and the health of the global economy.

Travel and tourism professionals saw the potential of developing a niche LGBTQ marketplace for its services. A 2016 study, with responses from 661 service providers in 90 countries, estimated annual global spending for travel by the LGBTQ community at US$202 billion, up from US$142 billion in 2011.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has published similar studies.

Boutique hotels, airlines, and travel companies, which cater specifically to the community, have been created and have thrived.

The International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) was founded in 1938, by a group of 25 LGBTQ travel agents and hotel owners, to connect the community and support it in providing advice on safe and welcome places to travel in the world.

US Navy To Name Ship After Harvey Milk The US Navy are to name a ship after the LGBT rights activist, and San Francisco politician, Harvey Milk, who was assassinated in 1978.

According to a report by USNI News, who had obtained a Congressional notification dated July 14, 2016, the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, has indicated that he intends to name an upcoming Military Sealift Command fleet oiler USNS Harvey Milk (TAO206).

A Navy spokesman told USNI News yesterday (Thursday 28th) that Mabus is deferring releasing further information until the naming announcement.

Harvey Milk came from a navy family, and had served as a diving officer during the Korean war, on the USS Kittiwake, afterwards transferring to Naval Station, San Diego to train as a diving instructor. In 1955, he was honourably discharged from the Navy having achieved Lieutenant Junior Grade, and was said to have been wearing his Navy diver’s belt buckle when he was shot. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

Mabus has named other ships after civil rights leaders, including USNS Cesar Chavez.

Australia: AttorneyGeneral George Brandis Confirms Plebiscite In an interview with Australian presenter, Fran Kelly (Insiders 24th July) the Australian AttorneyGeneral, George Brandis, confirms that the government wishes to hold a plebiscite on marriage equality, “as soon as is practicable”, and will be recommending a compulsory vote.

He will be taking a submission to cabinet in the coming weeks.

Amnesty Welcomes Marriage Equality Law in Isle of Man Amnesty International has welcomed the new marriage equality law in the Isle of Man, which came into effect on Friday 22nd July, enabling same-sex couples to get married.

Northern Ireland is now the only region between and Ireland where a ban on same-sex marriage is still in force, despite majority public support for equal marriage.

The Marriage and Civil Partnership Act is based on the same legal framework introduced in England two years ago, and enables same-sex couples to marry in a civil ceremony or, subject to agreement, in a religious celebration. It is thought the island’s first same-sex marriage is due to take place at the end of July.

Chief Minister Allan Bell has described the move – which was backed by Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, in April – as an “historic moment” for the island.

Patrick Corrigan, Amnesty International’s Head of Nations and Regions, said: “This is a landmark for the LGBT community on the Isle of Man and Chief Minister Allan Bell deserves thanks for delivering this important step for equality.

“Same-sex couples in the Isle of Man will now be able to get married in the company of their family and friends and with the full recognition of their local community, just as in England, Scotland and Wales. That is a powerful and loving message to send to every member of the island’s LGBT community as well as to wider society.

“Last year Amnesty International wrote to the Isle of Man government encouraging this law change and we’re now delighted to see equal marriage come into law on the island.

“The Isle of Man’s law reform also throws into sharp contrast the situation facing gay and lesbian couples in Northern Ireland, who are still denied the right to get married by their

government. This must change urgently, especially given the 70% support which now exists among the public, according to a recent survey.�

There is widespread and increasing public support in Northern Ireland for the introduction of marriage rights for same-sex couples, following the Yes vote in the marriage equality referendum in the Republic of Ireland in May 2015.

Earlier this month an Ipsos MORI survey showed that 70% of people in Northern Ireland support same-sex marriage, with only 22% opposed. Last summer an estimated 20,000 people took part in a pro-equal marriage march in Belfast, organised by Amnesty International, Rainbow Project and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. The Amnesty International-backed Love Equality campaign, launched in March, has committed itself to securing civil marriage equality in Northern Ireland.

In November 2015 the Northern Ireland Assembly voted in favour of the introduction of samesex marriage for the first time, by a margin of 53 to 52 MLAs, but the Democratic Unionist Party blocked the motion using a “petition of concern� veto mechanism originally designed to protect minority rights.

Amnesty considers Northern Ireland law to be in breach of international human rights standards which specify that countries must not discriminate with regards to the right to marry and found a family on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. (eile.ie 24 July 2016)

United Methodist Church Elects First Openly Gay Bishop Rev Karen Oliveto (58) is the first openly gay person to be elected bishop by the United Methodist Church, in contravention of church rules.

Bishop Bruce R. Ough, president of the United Methodist Council of Bishops, issued the following statement regarding the results of the Episcopal election at the Western Jurisdictional Conference of The United Methodist Church, meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, on July 15th: “The Western Jurisdiction has elected the Rev. Karen Oliveto of Glide Memorial United Methodist Church in San Francisco to serve as a bishop of The United Methodist Church.

Rev. Oliveto has been described as “an openly lesbian clergyperson.” This election raises significant concerns and questions of church polity and unity.

Our Book of Discipline has clearly delineated processes in place for resolving issues even as complex and unprecedented as this election.

The authority to elect bishops is constitutionally reserved to the jurisdictional and central conferences. Any elder in good standing is eligible for election as a bishop of the church.

An elder under an unresolved complaint is still considered to be in good standing. Being a self-avowed, practicing homosexual is a chargeable offense for any clergyperson in The United Methodist Church, if indeed this is the case.

The Council of Bishops is monitoring this situation very closely. The Council does not have constitutional authority to intervene in the election or supervisory processes at either the annual conference, jurisdictional or central conference levels. And, we are careful to not jeopardize any clergy or lay person’s due process by ill-advised comments” […..].

He acknowledged that whereas some would see this as a violation of church rules, others would see it a step forward towards inclusivity:

“There are those in the church who will view this election as a violation of church law and a significant step toward a split, while there are others who will celebrate the election as a milestone toward being a more inclusive church. Others will no doubt have questions as we find ourselves in a place where we have never been. Still, others will likely see this election as disrupting or even rendering moot the purpose and work of the Commission currently being formed by the Council�.

However, the bishop stated that the church would continue to work together to iron out any differences or disagreements, and that their unity was not defined by uniformity.

Recount Shows YES Vote for Anglican Church of Canada General Synod 2016 on Marriage Canon In an astonishing turn of events, the Anglican Church of Canada’s General Synod 2016 has approved same-sex marriage, the day after they had appeared to reject it.

3. Add the following to section 11 of the Regulations e) A minister may only solemnize a marriage between persons of the same sex if authorized by the diocesan bishop.

4. Declare that this resolution shall come into effect on the first day of January after being passed by General Synod at Second Reading.

Australia: The end of AIDS? Australia’s top HIV/AIDS epidemiologists, scientists and community sector representatives have marked extraordinary progress against AIDS and declared that it is now possible to virtually eliminate HIV infections in Australia with appropriate investment in research, communityled health promotion and access to new HIV prevention technologies, such as PrEP. While HIV was traditionally the precursor to AIDS, advances in the effectiveness of HIV medicines and access to them means very few Australians who are able to access HIV therapies now progress to AIDS. The announcement marks the culmination of a thirtythree year response, spanning science, medicine and community outreach and activism. While noting the progress against AIDS, the elusive goal of ending new HIV infections remains an enduring challenge. More than 1000 new infections occur each year. New technologies, if appropriately supported and monitored, have the potential to achieve virtual elimination of new HIV infections by 2020.

“While we continue to see a number of people diagnosed late with HIV, some of whom have AIDS-type symptoms, the AIDS public health threat has morphed into an HIV prevention challenge. We continue to see more than 1000 new HIV diagnoses a year in Australia.

“In fact, with new prevention tools such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) Australia has a real chance of both consolidating our tremendous progress against AIDS and reaching the ambitious goal of virtual elimination of HIV transmission by 2020,” Professor Grulich added.

According to Darryl O’Donnell, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO), “Australia’s progress against AIDS is tremendous. We will never again in our communities have the horror of so many

loved ones dying. We don’t have to worry that HIV will inevitably lead to illness and death. Good access to treatment and testing and a community-led approach is critical to maintaining Australia’s effective response to HIV. “But the job isn’t done. Too many people are still being diagnosed with HIV, and often they’re being diagnosed much later than we’d like.

The virtual elimination of new HIV infections requires long-term investment in the organisations that have responded to the needs of HIV in our affected communities for thirty years. These are the community organisations that have supported gay men and communicated honestly about new research into treatment and prevention. Successive governments have invested in the HIV/AIDS response since the early 1980s. Australia’s success in fighting AIDS is globally recognised. Now we must go the next step and end new HIV infections.”

According to Mr Cipri Martinez, President of the National Association of People Living with HIV Australia (NAPWHA), “the virtual elimination of AIDS cases in Australia is an important milestone, but a crucial element to ending HIV in Australia is to

encourage the uptake of antiretroviral medicine so that HIV positive people can become undetectable and un-infectious to others. The most successful community responses will include early combination prevention, testing and treating strategies.

“Getting to zero new HIV infections in Australia means redoubling our efforts with vulnerable communities including, women, noncommunity attached gay men and people from non-English speaking backgrounds. These people are most likely to be diagnosed and treated late and can sometimes develop AIDSdefining conditions. Those few individuals can be confident that in most cases their symptoms can be quickly and easily addressed with effective treatments.

“We must continue progress towards expanding access to HIV treatments by supporting the Global Fund, which is the key financing mechanism for fighting HIV/AIDS. This year, the Global Fund will be asking donors including Australia, to increase their support for the Global Fund to enable the great gains against HIV/AIDS to be sustained and improved,” said Mr Bowtell. “I hope that the new Australian government will respond generously to the Global Fund’s appeal for increased funding to protect the world from HIV, malaria and tuberculosis.”

Scholarship Programme Announced by PARIS 2018 And Federation Of Gay Games Paris 2018 and the Federation of Gay Games (FGG) have announced a scholarship programme for Gay Games 10.

From Monday, 1 August 2016, applications for Gay Games 10 Scholarships were being accepted.

The Gay Games Scholarship Program was established to encourage financially challenged participants from underrepresented populations around the world to take part in the Gay Games, with support from the Roy M. Coe Scholarship Fund. The Roy M. Coe Scholarship Fund was endowed to the FGG in 1995. Since 1998, over 800 scholarship candidates have participated in the Gay Games.

HRC Disappointed in Supreme Court’s Decision on Transgender Restrooms

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) in the US expressed disappointment in a decision yesterday by the U.S. Supreme Court to halt a lower court’s order forbidding a Virginia school district from enforcing its discriminatory ban on transgender students using bathrooms consistent with their gender identity.

The 5-3 order in Gloucester County School Board v. Grimm allows the school board’s discriminatory policy to remain in place, while the Supreme Court awaits an application by the school board to have its full appeal heard by the Supreme Court. A final decision in the case would likely occur well into the school year.

“Today’s Supreme Court order is deeply disappointing and subjects Gavin Grimm and students like him to unsafe and discriminatory conditions as they begin returning to school in the coming weeks,” said HRC Legal Director Sarah Warbelow.

“No young person should wake up in the morning fearful of bullying or discrimination during the school day ahead.

Every day that discrimination is allowed to continue, transgender students are put at risk of harm. While we remain optimistic that this is a temporary setback in the larger effort to ensure that transgender students are treated with dignity and respect, time is of the essence and any delay infringes on these students’ right to a safe and quality education.”

In late May, the full Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a request by the Gloucester County School Board to rehear Grimm’s lawsuit. Grimm claims that the school district violated his federal civil rights, under Title IX of the Education Act of 1972, by denying him access to the boy’s restroom, consistent with his gender identity.

In April, a panel of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed, in a 2-1 decision,the U.S. Department of Education’s interpretation of Title IX as protecting transgender students from discrimination, including allowing them to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity.
