APR Workshop on Environment Education in Scouting Swiss-Inn Waterfront, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia 04 - 07 June 2012
Information for Participants Aim To support NSOs with the delivery of environmental education programmes using experiential education and to implement projects on Climate Change. Also, to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of UNEP in June. Objectives: At the end of four days, the Workshop participants will be able to -
To raise awareness of environmental issues and identify local actions that Scouts are undertaking;

To support NSOs and encourage them to take active role in developing environment education programmes and adopt the World Scout Environment Programme of WOSM;

To establish a network of potential leaders who can lead, monitor and evaluate the environmental activities in their countries and share information on existing.
Participants: Key Leaders and full time executives from National Scout Organization in-charge of Youth Programme. 24 overseas participants and 25 local participants are expected to attend the workshop. Working Language: The working language of the workshop will be in English. National Scout Organizations will be requested to select participants who are able to understand and take an active part in discussions in English. Venue: Swiss Inn Hotel, Sandakan, Sabah is located right at the heart of Sandakan town or 15 minutes drive from Sandakan Airport. Sandakan is the second-largest city in the State of Sabah, East Malaysia, on the north-eastern coast of the island of Borneo. It is about 230 km east of Kota Kinabalu, the State Capital of Sabah. Sandakan can be reached about five hours and a half drive or 50 minutes flying from Kota Kinabalu. Sandakan is known as the gateway for ecotourism destinations in Sabah such as the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, the Rainforest Discovery Centre, Turtle Islands Park, Kinabatangan Floodplains and Gomantong Caves. Date and Duration: The event will start on Monday, 04 June 2012 and will end on Thursday, 07 June 2012 (four full days for the workshop, including a half day educational tour).

Workshop Fee: The workshop Fee is US$150.00, which include inland transportation between the Sandakan airport or Kota Kinabalu International Airport and the workshop venue, workshop materials and food (from dinner of 03-Jun-12 until breakfast of 08-Jun-12). Those who have any special food requirements please inform in advance. Visa: Please inquire locally if you require entry visa to Malaysia. If yes, please inform Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia with your passport details well in advance to send an invitation or other documents as may be required by you for visa application. Arrival and Departure: Participants are expected to arrive by Sunday, 03 June 2012 and may leave anytime on Friday, 08 June 2012, if desired. Please take note of the long distance between Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Sandakan and make sure that you plan for the travelling time. The overseas participants will be received upon arrival by the host country at the airports both in Kota Kinabalu, international airport (KK), or at the domestic airport at Sandakan. Sandakan is connected by domestic flight from KK and from Kuala Lumpur (KL) and you must arrange for this domestic flight if you are arriving at KL or if you want to arrive Sandakan by air instead of by land. If you are arriving at KK international and want to travel to Sandakan by land, you must ensure that you arrive well on time and give sufficient time for your travel by land to Sandakan which is about 5 hours drive and must give advance notice so that the local host can organize the land transport. In all cases the flight details must be sent well in advance. Please make sure that you have submitted your travel itinerary to Persekutuan Pengakap 15 May 2012, with a copy to the World Scout Bureau/APR office. Climate: Sandakan has a tropical rainforest climate with heavy precipitation throughout the year. Temperatures are relatively constant throughout the course of the year with average high temperatures around 31Ëš C and average low temperatures of 24Ëš C. The high humidity can make the climate feel a little sticky and sweaty so light clothing is preferred. Be prepared with rain coats too. Attire and Dress Code: Attire for the workshop will include Scout Uniform for Opening and Closing Ceremonies and formal functions. Smart casual clothes may be worn for other sessions. For image building purposes, you may also be requested to wear the uniform when you go out for educational tour.

Foreign Exchange: The local Malaysia currency is called “Ringgit� (MYR). USD1.00 is equal to about MYR 3.10220 (or very close to it). Since you will be transferred from the airport directly to the workshop venue, it is highly recommended to change your currency at the airport. Time Zone: The local time of Malaysia is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (UTC/GMT +8 hours). Check your time zone here. Electricity: Electricity in Malaysia is 220-240V. Type G plug is the primary type plug in Malaysia although Type C (European 2-pin) is also commonly used. The outlet sockets are mainly for Type G but can also fit in with Type C. Type G is with two parallel flat pins with ground pin.

Additional expenses, as well as hotel expenses, for any arrival before the workshop or for late departure will be the responsibility of the concerned participant. What to bring: High heat and humidity require packing enough clothing to always appear clean and fresh. Bring breathable clothes since it is always humid in this destination. Lightweight clothing is worn all year, like light cotton shirts or t-shirts and bring your personal stationeries. Other optional equipment includes, still and video cameras, small gifts to exchange with the host. Some badges for swapping.
