ADS 4 // BARLOW MOTORS

Two main qualities, interlacing pathways and modularity, were found through these experiments, therefore, the building was designed around a central vehicular pathway. To allow for a modular, intreconnected design, the structural system was extremely important and thus and emphasised feature.

The brief was approached through the word ‘erratic’ in relation to Mr Barlow, a prolific melbourne business man from the early 20th century. ‘Erratic’ was then further refined through the idea of smoke, which was experimented with to analyse how it physically reacts to its environment - in this case a physical model of the site.

ADS 3 // WYNDHAM GATEWAY

This design studio focused on a urban identifier, or gateway. The brief was to created a signifier for the city of Wyndham that would be built on a site beside the highway to Geelong. This identifier was to be created using Rhinoceros 4.0 and its plug-in Grasshopper, a parametric modelling tool. Completed in a group with two other students, the main concept was that of place finding. On a map of the section of highway that encompassed the turn off to Wyndham City, it was found that Melbourne was straight forward, Wyndham to the left and Geelong to the right. These points were then used as inputs into a Grasshopper plug-in called FlowLines that creates a series of rippled rings. The idea of the design was to create a gateway that could be experience by a driver from both far away and as they pass through it.

CONSTRUCTION DESIGN

ORIGINAL SKETCH DESIGN

In this subject a hand drawn sketch design for a small scale commercial building was distributed. From this AutoCAD was used to refine the drawings and produce a full set of construction drawings including details. Attention was paid to structure and material.

ADS 2 // KEW BOATHOUSE

This design studio focused on a medium scale commercial building. The brief was to re-design the Studley Park boathouse in the manner of an architectural ‘Master’. Designed in the style of Alvar Aalto, the building uses his ideas of spatial layout and devision. Using the concept of Grow: A Reflection of Nature, the building uses the site itself as a spatial guide, with main axes based on the contours and important views. From the plans the building then grows up with the window scheme derived from tree branches.

Initial inspiration was gained from looking at all aspects of coffee, with the final design including a hanging sculpture based on steam [from steaming the milk]. The flower shop drew inspiration from plants, with the display stand taking a literal approach with leaf shaped shelves.
