Have you noticed advertising on social media sites you’ve visited? If you answered “no”, you’re not alone. And yet there are lots of ads on social sites. They just seem to be less obtrusive than the usual online ads. If you answered “Yes”, you’re probably thinking of those sidebar Facebook ads, down the right side of your profile page. The ones that show you ads that are, for the most part, actually interesting, for once: Anywhere from “mildly interesting” to “I can’t stand it – must click!” And you like the feeling of control you have, when you can veto an offensive ad and “report” it… or let the world know you “like” that type of ad… and would like to see more. The reason social media ads are less annoying and obtrusive? They observe social rules of good manners and behavior, making a polite attempt to “fit in” easily into your conversations… and not interrupt them! Social media ads are sensitive to the subject and tone of your page or social media group. They feel like a natural extension of the “conversation”. And that’s the real key!
Google SEO vs. Social Media Face it – you hate pop-up ads… and you never did care much for banners either. (In fact, you tended not to “see” them!) Occasionally you find yourself clicking a 125 x 125 button ad on some blog – but that’s only because it related to the subject you’re interested in – the one that sent you to that site in the first place! You also occasionally click on one of those colored, underlined text links in the blog posts you read… and you’re always irritated when it doesn’t take you where you were expecting to go. Let’s boil it down to the single most common reason traditional SEO-based online advertising is on the decline… The ads are annoying and intrusive, interrupting your focused browsing task Now let’s examine why they don’t bother you half as much on social media sites (and occasionally you’ve even been known to click on one!) The ads seem like they just naturally fit in and “continue” the discussion Offline or on; PC or mobile; this latter “rule” is one of the most important of any advertising promotion. And it’s especially important on social networking sites…
We can thank mobile devices for that. You see, in 2009, mobile device sales exceeded 4 million… and PC’s only one. For the first time in history, mobile sales dwarfed PC sales. The reason? Internet access via mobile grew less expensive as mega-giant companies such as Telus and Bell Mobility quickly realized “where the money is”. Data packages and plans allowed people to check things out on the net while they were on the go:
At school Traveling to and from work Waiting for kids at lessons In the supermarket or mall On vacation While exercising
Last year saw the addition of payment options via mobile. Prior to that, Bluetooth technology allowed people the freedom of accessing mobiles legally, even while driving. In short, mobiles have become such a huge part of everyday life that people have shifted from waiting until they got home to check their PC’s to whiling away hours on Facebook or Twitter, while out and about.
The creation of “apps” – applications – for mobile devices further added to both their usefulness and customer loyalty. People loved being able to select and add programs to their mobiles that would allow them to do things such as:
Get directions to their destination (who needs a costly GPS?) Find the nearest hardware store Get the weather Play a game while waiting for kids at dentist’s appointments Find out the time in Hong Kong Find out what’s happening in your latest reality show Check Twitter and Facebook
And what felt like a million and one other frivolous little tasks and amusements – one for every taste!
The Rise of Social Searching One inadvertent side effect: People began to create communities again… online ones. Long-lost relatives who had never bothered to be part of each others’ lives before, often because they lived far away, even in different countries, started “poking” each other on Facebook and playing Farm Town together. Moms with ADHD kids started letting of steam to each other via their ADHD group on Facebook. Teens into Japanese Anime and Manga comic books posted their latest drawings on MySpace. Marketers on the run kept up with their followers via Twitter’s easy SMS-type “tweets”… And a shift happened that took even Google by surprise: Whether they were out and about on their mobiles, or sitting at their home office desks, people started following the recommendations of their social networking communities. Eager for the entertainment they’d come to suspect, they’d check out products, games, apps and just about everything else that they’d never normally bother with, all on the social recommendation of online friends… on what was creating the most buzz, and what had become the latest trend. In other words, searches have become based on social recommendations with a large group of internet users, rather than on traditional SEO algorithms and Google searches. As 34-year-old Lynn P. says: “If I want to find something out quickly related to my son’s ADHD, I’m more likely to tweet my ADHD group, instead of sitting down at the computer to search. There’s so much crap that comes up when you search, nowadays, you can’t get to the information, it takes too long.”
And that’s one drawback search engines have created for themselves, when they place paid clients at the top of the heap in page rank – instead of placing them by relevant vital information. (Algorithm-based Google is backpedaling desperately to rectify this, after a disastrous and perhaps premature attempt to tap into social media via their less-than-successful Google Buzz). The Benefits for Marketers This shift in social consciousness and habits has had a catastrophic effect in industries such as magazines and periodicals, but it’s good news for you! Marketers who realize this phenomenon can take advantage of it, while others are still busy buying the latest keyword research program. Oh, it doesn’t negate proper SEO at all, and of course keywords are still absolutely crucial in the online marketing world: You just have to understand that searches happen on social networks more than they happen via search engines, in this decade.
