About the EIS The English Institute of Sport (EIS) works in partnership with sports to improve performances through the delivery of high quality sport science and medical support to elite athletes, through its nationwide network of expertise and facilities. Under the leadership of Steve Cram MBE, the EIS Board and National Director Nigel Walker, the EIS Vision is to be the world’s leading provider of performance-impacting sport science and sport medicine within elite sport. As provider of choice for sport science and medical services in England, and aiming to be the employer of choice for practitioners within these fields, the EIS works to create a sustainable, quality assured support system.

Nigel joined the EIS in 2010 from the BBC where he was Head of Change and Internal Communications. He was a UK Sport Board member and Chair of its Major Events Panel, where he remains a member. His experience as an international athlete and across the high performance system, along with business acumen and leadership skills are key to driving the EIS forward to 2012 and beyond.

Rod has been involved in Sport Medicine for the last 20 years, joining the EIS in 2003 after working with the likes of Triathlon and the British Olympic Medical Centre. He has attended the Atlanta, Sydney, Athens and Beijing Olympics with the British team as well as the Kuala Lumpur and Manchester Commonwealth Games with the England team. Based in the South West Rod coordinates support across the EIS network as well as delivers EIS clinics at the EIS base at the University of Bath.

Physiotherapy & Soft Tissue Therapy Physiotherapy & Soft Tissue Therapy aids injury prevention and assists in the rehabilitation of athletes back to performance levels. With over 50 practitioners the EIS has one of the largest and leading teams of physiotherapy and soft tissue therapists helping to deliver success on the world stage.

Chris joined the EIS in 2006 working with a number of sports in the South West including Bob Skeleton, with whom he attended the Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, delivering physiotherapy support to the squad throughout. Chris was appointed to his current role in 2008.

Dr Ken van Someren Director of Sport Science
Through our four key strategic areas of technical leadership, development of knowledge, skills and practice, knowledge management, partnerships and collaborations, the EIS Sport Sciences aim to provide world-leading, performance impacting support to sports. Ken joined the EIS in 2005, having supported international athletes and squads whilst based in the academic sector. Previously EIS Head of Physiology, he was appointed to strategically lead the EIS Sport Science support services in 2009, having accrued a breadth of experience working across a number of sports. Ken’s research interests include; the physiological determinants of sports performance exercise-induced muscle damage and recovery strategies, in which he has published extensively.

Strength & Conditioning S&C is the physical development of athletes for elite sport performance, bridging the gap between the theory and practice of training to help athletes become faster, fitter and stronger so they performance better and remain injury free. The EIS has one of the biggest S&C teams in the world with over 40 expert coaches working across the country. Raph has been with the EIS since 2002 and worked with a range of sports before working with Athletics since 2006. Based at the EIS base at Lee Valley Athletics Stadium, he is responsible for the development of the S&C network and how the service can make an increased impact with sports. He is currently in the third year of PhD research funded by the UK Sport 2012 Innovations Project.

Physiology Applied physiological support provides specialist advice about the physical demands of an event and its associated training. Physiological support improves physical performance by supporting the coach to understand and develop his/her athletes with objectivity and individuality. The EIS has one of the world’s leading applied sports physiology networks. The experts on: Training Diagnostics, Recovery, Neuromuscular Performance Altitude, Anaerobic Training, Readiness to Train, Paediatric Physiology, Hormonal and Immune Responses and Anthropometry.

Other EIS Physiologists include: • Jamie Pringle, who works with Canoeing and Multisport. • Sarah Hardman, who works with Rowing. • Barry Fudge, who works with UKA.
Steve has 14 years experience of working full-time in High Performance Sport. He has worked at four Olympic Games and nine World Championships, supporting athletes from track and field athletics, rowing and bobsleigh. He has specific expertise in the domains of modelling the determinants of performance, oxygen uptake, training monitoring and recovery. Steve leads the technical team of around 15 physiologists across the EIS network, including three human performance laboratories, and is based out of the EIS High Performance Centre at Loughborough University.

Performance Nutrition Performance Nutrition plays a pivotal role in supporting the training and competition demands of elite athletes. Jeni Pearce

Jeni has worked with the EIS for the past 3 years and was appointed to her current role in early 2010, having worked with a range of sports in her native New Zealand. Author of 10 books on nutrition, Jeni also worked as the holding camp nutritionist ahead of the Beijing Games with the British Olympic Association and also since being with the EIS has worked with a range of sports such as athletics and more recently cricket.

Performance Psychology Performance Psychology focuses on enhancing sports performance by working with coaches and athletes to develop the mental skills to improve the way they operate within the sporting environment. The EIS team work on a number of levels to create psychological robustness, these include working at developing the culture, the team dynamics, the training environment and the competition environment. The team believe in working in a closely aligned way with the coaching staff to help create environments that coach mental toughness. The EIS has developed a team of sport and clinical psychologists to provide a system of support to sports. What happens inside your head is often the difference that makes the difference. Mark Bawden
Head of the Performance Psychology Team Other Sports Psychologists include: • Pete Lindsay, who works with GB Boxing. • Sarah Cecil, who works with UKA and Fencing. • Dr Ben Chell, who works with the RYA. • Dr Amanda Gatherer, Clinical Psychologist.
Mark has worked at the EIS for six years and has been Head of Service since 2007. Mark is currently the sport psychologist working with the England cricket team but he has worked with a wider range of other sports in his time at the EIS including Boxing, Netball and Speed Skating. Mark comes from a positive psychology background and has developed a performance framework within the EIS which is based around working proactively rather than reactively, working with strengths and working in a closely aligned way with coaches. Mark has extensive experience working in the high performance environment and has been to three Winter Olympic Games and two Paralympic Games. Outside of the EIS Mark is also a performance coach working in other high performance environments such as business, health and education.

Performance Analysis Performance Analysis is the provision of objective feedback to athletes and coaches in order to positively improve performance and change athletic behaviour.

Staff has worked with the EIS since 2002 where he has set up the network of Performance Analysts and coordinated the Biomechanics service too. Having lectured on Notational Analysis and Research Methods before consulting to over 15 international sports teams, since joining the EIS he has worked with a multitude of sports including Squash, with whom he is the England Team Manager for the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Biomechanics Biomechanics studies the mechanical parameters of human motion and in sport it can help to improve performance by means of developing more effective motion techniques as well as to avoid injury. Aiming to establish the physical and technical demands of sports/skills which impact upon performance and injury prevention. The EIS has technical support from Dr Phil Graham-Smith for the Biomechanics service. The experts on: Video Analysis – (2D & 3D), Objective Feedback including Kinetic & Kinematic Analysis of Human Movement, Integration/Application of Force Variables, Characteristics for Assessment, Diagnosis of Strength & Power Measurements, EMG Analysis – all used to improve Technical Efficiency of Individual Movement Patterns and Reduce the Occurrence of Injury.

Talent Identification Through an innovative partnership between UK Sport and the EIS, the UK Talent Team is in place to partnerup with targeted NGB’s to assist in supporting talent identification, confirmation and athlete development. The EIS employs 4 Talent ID Scientists who work on the Delivery of the service across sports. The experts on: Bespoke projects that address key Talent issues, modernisation of existing NGB Athlete Identification & Development Programmes, Talent Profiles, Skill Development Programmes, Talent Confirmation Models, Statistical Modelling and the measurement of maturational status in youth athletes to enhance prediction.

Paul leads the team of Talent ID Scientists at the EIS, working closely with UK Sport as part of the UK Talent Team. Paul’s physiology background, saw him work with sailing through the EIS prior to working within Talent. The team are responsible for a number of Talent ID and Transfer campaigns including: Tall & Talented, Fighting Chance, Paralympic Potential, Pitch2Podium, Girls4Gold and Sporting Giants as well as working on bespoke projects with sports. The team also work with sports on Talent Development initiatives aimed at securing the successful transition of athletes already in the World Class Pathway. Working closely with sports, the UK Talent Team works to support and develop the infrastructure to identify, confirm and develop those athletes with the potential to compete at international level.
