Ea rn i n g th e p r o g r a m ’s ninth consecutive winning season, including marking the third straight year that the Panthers have won at least 10 games, the 2010 Panther squad finished with a 10-1 overall mark. Besides outscoring the opposition, 609 to 37, the squad once again continued to set many individual and team records. Despite having a program-high 29-game winning streak snapped, EIU did earn eight shutouts over the course of the year and finished the season on a sevengame winning streak. HEAD COACH TWELFTH SEASON 100-19 OVERALL (1-1 NCAA)
2
FRANK GRAZIANO just completed his twelfth season as skipper of the Eastern Illinois squad, after accepting the challenge of coaching the premiere NCAA Division I women’s rugby program when he was hired prior to the start of the 1999 season. During his tenure, Graziano continues to mold the program into one of national prominence, as his teams are consistently successful both on, and off, the field. This past year, the long-time coach registered his 100th career victory in a season-finale road win over Big 12 power Missouri. For the third straight year, EIU has notched at least 10 wins and dropped just one road game which unfortunately snapped a program-high 29-game winning streak in the process. However, the Panthers countered that dissapointing loss by winning the final seven contests and earned eight total shutouts over the course of the season. Plus the squad and dominated the oppposition via a 609 to 37 total scoring advantage. Crucial victories this past year included blanking Notre Dame, 59-0, in the first-ever meeting between the two midwest foes, plus EIU shutout arch-rival Northern Iowa, 34-0, in a critical road victory. The Panthers earned a season-high 96 points as the squad crushed instate rival Illinois on the road. In fact, the key win over the Fighting Illini was just one of four total victories over an Big Ten opponent in 2010, as EIU also defeated Purdue, Minnesota and Michigan. In 2009, the squad finished with a 10-0 mark, outscoring the competition 618 to 63 and recording five shutouts. The team also extended the current school-record winning streak to 26 games dating back to the last six games of 2007. The Panthers also notched an additional 22 single-season highs over the course of the year, as well as upping several career marks. That includes the top two tackle marks via defensive standouts Stephanie Militello and Chase Cain. Key wins in 2009 included dominating Iowa State (61-5), Southern Illinois (103-0) and Big Ten power Minnesota (49-0), all on the road, while EIU also had big wins over Missouri and Illinois at home. But two huge victories came against a couple other ‘Panther’ units, as Eastern won in the final seconds over both UW-Milwaukee (29-27) and Northern Iowa (22-20). Kicker Coartney McKinney buried her second consecutive penalty kick attempt as time expired to down UWM, while a five-point try from Crystal Jones with just a minute to go helped the squad rebound from a rare half-time deficit to scratch past regional rival UNI. The 2008 edition of EIU Rugby was also one for the record books, as the Panthers finished with the program’s second undefeated season, finishing 10-0 and outscoring the opposition, 634 to 39. EIU also notched six shutouts, including blanking their final five opponents.
The 2008 squad also tallied numerous school-records in the process, as the tallied an amazing 75 total bests, including single-game, season and career marks. That included coaching one of the Panthers’ most outstanding players, Samantha Manta (2005-08), whose top marks for single-game and career points, trys, and runs-over-20-yards are destined to remain in place for years to come. In 2007, EIU hosted the historic first-ever women’s rugby contest between two NCAA programs, as the Division I Panthers battled Division II West Chester in front of a school-record crowd of 1,237. Although EIU dropped the hard-fought contest, 20-19, it was official, the first official NCAA women’s rugby game was on the books. Eastern went on to win the final

six games of the season to finish 8-2 overall. However, EIU avenged that NCAA loss to West Chester by completely dominating the Golden Rams, 38-5, in a rematch this past season on the road. Back in 1999, Graziano’s inaugural season, the Panthers finished 5-3 and participated in the National Tournament, where EIU went 3-1, reaching the elite eight before losing to national runner-up Princeton. Recruiting became a priority as his team soon boasted its best recruiting class in its short history. However, with a roster composed mostly of underclassmen, the young 2001 squad recorded the program’s only losing record, finishing 3-4 overall. However, once again the team recorded a victory over a Big Ten team, downing the Ohio State Buckeyes. Since that down year, Graziano has guided the Panthers through seven consecutive winning seasons, while sporting an impressive 64-6 record during that time span. The growing pains of 2001 was easily forgotten following the team’s inaugural NCAA season in 2002. EIU recorded victories over schools from the ACC, SEC, Big 12, and Big Ten on its way to an unblemished 11-0 record. This historic squad not only outscored the opposition by an astounding 683-12 margin, but also notched ten shutouts while setting six new team records. In 2003, EIU’s winning ways continued as the Panthers opened the season 4-0, after defeating Ohio State at home to close out the month of September. Unfortunately the momentum was snapped at the hands of a tough and talented Penn State squad the following week. EIU rebounded, however, by winning its final four games, including victories at Stanford and a comeback win over North Carolina on neutral territory.
“I came to Eastern Illinois to develop THE rugby model for this new emerging NCAA sport,” says Graziano. “At times the challenge has been daunting considering there is no high school rugby in the country, only select club teams, but the University and student-athletes have accepted the challenge and we continue to achieve our goals each and every year.” Graziano and winning rugby are synonymous with one another, as every program he has ever been associated with has turned out to be successful. There are two reasons -- his continued commitment to recruit the very best student-athletes and his special knack of challenging his players to perform above and beyond expectations. Graziano also emphasizes the importance of academics in the life of each of his student-athletes. His teams have a 100% graduation rate and only one time has one of his squads’ GPA average been below a 3.0 in any given semester. Prior to coming to the EIU campus, Graziano served as an assistant coach for the Women’s National Team U-23 program, and was National Event Coordinator and Collegiate Director for the USA Rugby organization. Graziano also created the women’s rugby team at his alma mater back in 1995 as Clemson recorded a 21-4 record its first two seasons. He also had a 91-38-4 record with the Clemson men’s squad from 1992-1997. A graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science degree with a civil engineering emphasis, some of Graziano’s creations can be located on EIU’s campus. He has designed and constructed several press boxes and storage facilities for the athletic department, including the structure at the Panthers’ own Lakeside Rugby Field.

Overall, Crystal has notched her name in the Panther record books nine times for single-season marks, which included career bests for total points and trys, with both earning runner-up honors at 445 and 89, respectively. She also finished second best for career runs over 20-yards with 60 total. While all-in-all, she is listed over 25 times in the EIU record books in a variety of statistical categories. Earned her Eastern Illinois degree in kinesiology and sports studies, while also minoring in community and health studies. She was named to the EIU Dean’s LIst multiple times and also earned both the Presidential Award and OVC Academic Medal of Honor in the process. THE RULES OF RUGBY FIELD OF PLAY ... Rugby is played on a field 110 yards long and 75 yards wide. There are end zones called in-goal areas which are 12 yards deep behind the goal posts. The goal posts are H-shaped and located on the goal line. The cross bar is 10 feet high and the uprights are 18 feet apart.
PLAYERS & POSITIONS ... Rugby has 15 players playing both offense and defense. Eight players are called forwards and seven players are backs, as follows: Forwards Loose Head Prop, Hooker, Tight Head Prop, Lock (2), Flanker (2), and #8 Backs Scrumhalf, Flyhalf, Inside Center, Outside Center, Wing (2), and Fullback STARTING THE GAME ... The game consists of two 40-minute halves. The game begins with a kick-off (drop-kick) to the opposition from mid-field. Provided the ball travels beyond the 10-yard line, any player from either team may gain possession of the ball. All players, regardless of position, can run, pass, kick, and catch the ball. Likewise, all players must be able to tackle and defend. There is no blocking of opponents. MOVING THE BALL ... The ball can be moved in a variety of ways: Running - When running the ball, players may continue until they are tackled or step out-of-bounds. Passing - The ball may be passed to any player either laterally or backwards, but never forward. Kicking - Any player may kick the ball forward at any time. Once a ball is kicked players of either team may gain possession. Tackling - Players are tackled around the waist or legs only. In general there is no tackling above the arm pit, around the shoulders, or head; otherwise a penalty will be called. Tackling occurs when the ball carrier is grabbed and taken to the ground. There will be no shoulder charging, diving or leaving the feet on a tackle, otherwise a penalty is called. Once a player is tackled, play does not stop, instead the player tackled to the ground must release the ball. Rucking - When a tackled player is taken to the ground, players from both teams will converge over the ball and bind to each other in an attempt to push each other beyond the ball. These bound players form a ruck and the ball may not be played until the ball emerges from the ruck. Mauling - A maul is formed similarly to a ruck with a gathering of bound players, except the ball is simply held up and no tackle has taken place. As in rucking, the maul ends when the ball emerges.
RESTARTING PLAY ... There are two methods of restarting play if the ball goes out of bounds, or if a minor rules infraction has taken place: Line-out - If the ball goes out of bounds (crosses the touch line), the nonoffending team will have a line-out. Both teams will form a line perpendicular to the touch line one yard apart. The non-offending team will call a play and throw the ball in the air between the two lines, allowing both teams an equal opportunity to secure possession of the ball, with players jumping for the ball being supported in the air by members of their team. Scrum - Common sight in rugby, it is a bound group of eight players from each team forming a tunnel. The non-offending team will roll it directly into the center of the tunnel. Both teams will then push, while the squad’s ‘hookers’ attempt to secure the ball with their feet and push the ball backwards for the team to gain possession OTHER RUGBY TERMS ... Other terms in rugby include: Penalty - Penalties occur regularly in rugby. There are penalties for being off-side, dangerous play, and not releasing the ball when tackled. Knock-on - Accidentally hitting or dropping the ball forward. A scrum is awarded to the non-offending team. Forward Pass - The ball may only be passed laterally or backwards. A forward pass results in a scrum to the non-offending team. Advantage Rule - The non-offending team may continue play if they are able to take ‘advantage’ of the opposition’s mistake or violation of a rule. 25-yard Line - Balls kicked out of bounds from behind the 25-yard line are restarted with a line-out at the spot where the ball crosses the touch line. Balls kicked out of bounds from in front of the 25 yard line are restarted with a line-out from the spot where the ball was kicked. Off-side - There are several off-side lines on the field and these lines are constantly moving during play. Being off-side is not a penalty, but playing while off-side is a penalty.
EIUpanthers.com
SCORING ... There are four ways for a team to score in rugby: Try - Five points are awarded to a team for touching the ball down in the opponent’s in-goal area.
Conversion - Following a try, two points are awarded for a successful kick through the goal posts. The attempt must be taken on a line perpendicular from where the ball was touched down in the in-goal area on the proceeding try. Penalty Kick - Following a major rule violation, the kicking team has the option to attempt a kick at the goal posts. Three points are awarded for a successful penalty kick, however, if the kick fails the ball may continue to be played by either squad. Drop Goal - Three points are given for a successful drop kick. A drop kick may be taken anywhere, and by any player, during normal play. Like the penalty kick, the ball remains in play for either squad if the drop kick attempt fails.
