2012 soccer preview

Sophomore Jake Brillhart (above) scored a team-high four goals in 2011 to go along with two assists. THREE PANTHERS EARN PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS Sophomores Jake Brillhart and Will Butler along with redshirt-freshman Garet Christianson were named to the Summit League Men’s Soccer Preseason All-Conference Team by College Sports Madness. All three players were named to the first team. Brillhart was named to the Summit League Second Team and All-Newcomer Team last season after scoring a team-best four goals to go along with two assists. The Southlake, Texas, native started in all 17 matches last season and led the team with 16 shots on goal. Butler led the Panthers in scoring last year with 11 points, scoring three goals and adding five assists. The Bolingbrook, Ill., native logged 1,183 minutes a year ago and started in all 17 matches. He was also named to the Summit League All-Newcomer Team. Christianson played in six matches (one start) last year before suffering a seasonending knee injury. He scored three goals in 269 minutes of action before being sidelined. RETURNERS EIU returns two of its three all-conference selections a year ago in Jake Brillhart and Will Butler. The Panthers return the bulk of their offensive output from last season. Of the 62 points (20 goals, 22 assists) EIU scored last year as a team, the Panthers return a group of players (including five sophomores) that contributed 43 of those points (12 goals, 19 assists). In addition to the aforementioned accolades of Brillhart and Butler, two other sophomores in Jake Irwin and Tayron Martin return after both players recorded five assists last year. Martin started in 13 matches and took 12 shots on goal while Irwin played in all 17 matches (two starts) with six shots on goal. Redshirt-senior Ian McCausland has been named co-captain for the upcoming season and looks to provide leadership to a squad that features 20 players who are listed as a redshirt-sophomore or younger including 10 freshmen. Redshirt-sophomore Chris Boswell will serve as the other captain after starting in all 17 matches last season while adding two goals and one assist.

eastern illinois men’s soccer The Panthers will be without the services of sophomore Spencer Filosa on the back line after sustaining an injury over the summer. Filosa played in 16 matches (15 starts), logging 1,254 minutes – the most of any freshman – to go along with one assist. NEWCOMERS EIU welcomes 11 newcomers to the team this fall that will look to compete for starting roles immediately. Freshmen Garrett Creasor and Ben Feltes will compete with senior Evan Turner for playing time between the pipes.

season preview PANTHERS LOOK TO BUILD ON TRADITIONS The Panther men’s soccer program began in 1963 and started playing at the NAIA level before transitioning to where they currently play at the highest level of competition, the NCAA Division I level. EIU has had success throughout its history from capturing the 1969 NAIA Title to placing third at the NCAA Division I Tournament in 1981. EIU has had 31 winning seasons since 1963, including 19 seasons with 10 or more victories. The Panthers have also produced 21 AllAmerican men’s soccer players and two Academic All-Americans.

Junior transfer Jake Plant looks to make an immediate impact on the back line after the graduation of defender Mike Picinich who earned Summit League First Team honors last season. Conor Bartuch and Kyle Callender will also add depth to the defensive lineup.

HOWARTH IN THE CAREER COACHING CHARTS Panther head coach Adam Howarth begins his 13th year at the helm of the program in 2012, becoming the longest tenured coach in school history. Former head coach Fritz Teller led the team for 12 seasons.

2012 SCHEDULE EIU faces opponents from five different conferences this season, including matches versus four Missouri Valley Conference foes. The Panthers also play two teams from Atlantic Sun Conference and the Horizon League. EIU plays one team from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and the Atlantic-10 Conference.

Howarth has also accumulated 86 career victories, two shy of passing Teller in the career coaching charts and moving into third in career coaching wins at EIU. Former coaches Cizo Mosnia and Schellas Hyndman (current FC Dallas head coach) rank ahead of Howarth. Mosnia amassed 97 wins to rank second while Hyndam has a program-best 98 career coaching wins.

EIU’s home opener is scheduled for Sept. 14 against Central Arkansas while Summit League action begins on Sept. 22 at IUPUI. The Panthers will face Summit League newcomer Omaha on Oct. 6.

EIU PICKED TO FINISH SEVENTH IN PRESEASON POLL The Panther men’s soccer team was picked to finish seventh in the Summit League Preseason Poll as selected by league head coaches on Aug. 17.

BACK TO THE SUMMIT LEAGUE: YEAR TWO After participating in the Missouri Valley Conference from 19962010, the Panther men’s soccer program rejoined the Summit League where they competed from 1983-95. Despite finishing last in the final Summit League standings in 2011, the Panthers look to build on the success they previously had in the conference. EIU won a total of five Summit League titles from 1983-95 while compiling a 48-23-6 (.662) league record. The Panthers also had 40 players earn all-conference honors while in the league.

Defending league champions Western Illinois was selected to win the conference with five, first-place votes followed by Kansas City in second with one, first-place vote. Oakland received two, first-place votes and one fewer point than Kansas City to rank third in the poll. Oral Roberts was picked to finish fourth followed by IUPUI, Fort Wayne and Eastern Illinois. League newcomer Omaha rounded out the poll in eighth place. The top four teams in the final regularseason standings will advance to the conference tournament hosted by Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill., on Nov. 9-11.

2012 EIU MEN’S SOCCER Head Coach Adam Howarth

Adam HOWARTH

Head Coach 13th Season

Adam Howarth became only the seventh head coach in Eastern Illinois men’s soccer history in 2000, taking the reigns of his alma mater’s soccer program. In 12 seasons, Howarth has seen 22 players earn all-conference honors honors, including three players who earned Summit League honors in 2012 - Mike Picinich (First Team), Will Butler (Newcomer Team) and Jake Brillhart (Newcomer Team). Eight players have also received National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) honors during Howarth’s tenure. Howarth has also kept the winning tradition alive while adding some program firsts along the way. The Panthers posted back-to-back double-figure win seasons in 2006 and 2007 for the first time since 1988-89. In 2006, the Panthers won 11 matches and led the conference in goals against average (0.88 GAA) and fewest goals allowed (18). Offensively, Brad Peters led the conference in goals. EIU posted 12 wins and eight shutouts in 2007 while having Peters lead the conference in scoring for the second consecutive season. Mick Galeski also led the conference is assists. In the classroom, Howarth’s teams have also excelled. Adam Gartner became EIU’s first NSCAA Academic All-American as he earned second-team honors in 2007. Mike Lewis also became the first Capital One Academic All-American in men’s soccer at EIU. Gartner would later become the second player to earn the honors the following year. Other program firsts under the leadership of Howarth includes having a player taken in the Major League Soccer Draft. Thompson was drafted in the second round – the 15th overall pick – of the 2003 draft by the Dallas Burn. Thompson would later play on the United States U23 national team. Howarth inherited a team in 2000 that went 6-11-1 the previous year and led the squad to a 12-6-1 record in his first year with the program. Jason Thompson earned MVC Newcomer of the Year honors in 2010 while Howarth was the conference’s coach of the year runner-up.

PANTHERS UPSET NORTHWESTERN Freshman Will Butler made his Eastern Illinois men’s soccer debut in dramatic fashion by scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Panthers over Big Ten member Northwestern, 2-1, on Aug. 26, 2011. Northwestern would eventually go on and win the Big Ten Regular Season and Tournament Championships. In the 93rd minute on an EIU throw-in by Jake Irwin, Northwestern goalkeeper Tommy Tombridge punched the ball off the edge of the post to Butler who tapped the ball into the back of the net for the Panthers first win of the 2011 season. The Panthers improved to 5-4-5 all-time against the Wildcats with the victory while EIU head coach Adam Howarth improved to 2-2-1 versus the Big Ten foe. UNDERCLASSMEN LEAD OFFENSIVE ATTACK Of the 62 points (20 goals, 22 assists) the Panthers scored last year as a team, underclassmen contributed 43 of those points (12 goals, 19 assists). Five freshmen combined to score 10 goals and record 18 assists. PICINICH NAMED NSCAA SCHOLAR ATHLETE Senior Mike Picinich (pictured right) was named to the NSCAA Men’s Scholar All-North/ Central Region First Team for his performances on the field and in the classroom during the 2011 campaign. Picinich was named to the Summit League First Team in 2011 after scoring three goals and posting one assist in his final year with the Panthers. The senior defender also helped EIU post three shutouts last season. The Elburn, Ill., native graduated with a 3.46 grade point average as an accounting major. PANTHERS EARN NSCAA TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD The Panther men’s soccer team earned the 2011 NSCAA College Team Academic Award last season. EIU posted a 3.13 team grade point average in men’s soccer. The NSCAA team academic award is given to all men’s and women’s soccer teams of all NCAA divisions that post a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the 2010-11 academic year. THREE PANTHERS EARN ALL-SUMMIT LEAGUE HONORS Three Eastern Illinois men’s soccer players in Will Butler, Jake Brillhart and Mike Picinich earned All-Summit League honors last season. It was the first time since 2009 that EIU had three or more players earn all-conference honors.

The Southlake, Texas, native also led the team with three gamewinning goals. Butler was also named to the all-newcomer team after leading the Panthers in points this year with 11. The midfielder scored three goals and tallied five assists. The Bolingbrook, Ill., native also had one game-winning goal, coming in the season-opening victory over Big Ten member Northwestern. appearances

1981 NCAA DIVISION I TOURNAMENT - 3RD PLACE FINISH Under the direction of Schellas Hyndman – EIU’s all-time winningest coach and current FC Dallas head coach – the Panthers placed third at the 1981 NCAA Division I Tournament in only their first year as a Division I member. EIU posted the school’s most wins in a season as they finished the year with a 19-2-2 record. Led by All-Americans Damien Kelly and Agyeman Prempeh, the Panthers out scored their opponents 62-8 during the season. Goalkeeper Eric Hartman posted 16 of the team’s 18 shutouts, a school record that still stands today. No other EIU team has finished as high as the 1981 team in the NCAA Tournament since joining the Division I ranks.
