2012 soccer preview

Senior Kristin Germmann (above) earned all-conference honors last season while leading the team in points with 12 (5 goals, 2 assists).

PANTHERS PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN PRESEASON OVC POLL The Panther women’s soccer team was picked to finish ninth in the OVC Preseason Poll as selected by conference head coaches and sports information directors. In the final OVC standings, the Panthers have only finished below third on five occasions since joining the conference in 1998. EIU has finished in first or second place a total of eight times in the final OVC standings. GERMANN, GREENE AND TALDONE NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS Senior Kristin Germann, junior Caitlin Greene and redshirt-junior Jessica Taldone were selected as team captains for the upcoming season. The three upperclassmen have combined to play in 109 matches throughout their careers, including 92 starts. GERMANN, RADLOFF NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-OVC TEAMS Senior Kristin Germann and sophomore Meagan Radloff were both named to the 2012 All-OVC Preseason Team by College Sports Madness. Germann was tabbed to the first team while Radloff was named to the second team. Both players earned All-OVC honors a year ago as Germann earned second team honors while Radloff was named to the all-newcomer squad. RETURNING PLAYERS Senior Kristin Germann leads a group of 14 returning letterwinners, including five starters, onto the pitch this fall. The Carbondale, Ill., native paced the Panthers in scoring a year ago with 12 points (five goals, two assists) and started in all 19 matches. Germann currently has 14 career goals, only one shy from entering the career top-10 charts at EIU. The Panthers other two seniors are Ashley Streid (pictured right) and Jessie Morgan who combined to score one goal and add three assists last season. Returning sophomores Brooke Sill and Meagan Radloff also look to contribute offensively this year after successful freshmen campaigns. Sill scored one goal and took seven shots on goal last year in 18 matches while Radloff added an assist, making 14 starts and playing in all 19 matches.

season preview

Defensively, the Panthers lost three starting defenders from a year ago and look for juniors Caitlin Greene (2010 All-OVC Newcomer Team selection) and Brenna Vogel to fill the void along with some newcomers who will see playing time from the start of the season. EIU also returns its starting goalkeeper in redshirt-junior Jessica Taldone. The Crystal Lake, Ill., native posted a 1.20 goals against average last fall with five shutouts.

PERALA ENTERS FOURTH SEASON AS HEAD COACH Panther head coach Summer Perala enters her fourth season at the helm of the soccer program this fall. In three seasons, she has coached 10 players to All-Ohio Valley Conference honors including three All-OVC First Team selections. In 2011, the Panthers advanced to their 13th consecutive OVC Tournament - the most consecutive appearances in OVC history.

NEWCOMERS A total of 10 newcomers join the Panther women’s soccer team this season, including three in-state players. EIU looks to add immediate depth to the offensive attack with the addition of Hannah Miller, a 2011 NSCAA All-American and All-Region selection from Fishers, Ind. Karlee Deacon (Kitchener, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary’s) will also look to make an immediate impact in the midfield after a successful prep career. Both Miller and Deacon started in EIU’s lone preseason exhibition at Kansas.

PANTHERS LOOK TO BUILD ON TRADITION The Panther women’s soccer looks to continue on its rich tradition this fall, highlighted by a total of seven OVC titles – the most of any team in the conference. EIU has also advanced to a conference-best four NCAA Tournaments since the OVC began sponsoring women’s soccer in 1998.

Defensively, Briana Hickman and Lindsey Marino should contribute from the start of the season with the graduation of key defensive players from a year ago. Both players saw action in the team’s preseason match at Kansas. 2012 SCHEDULE The Panthers will face opponents from four different conferences from outside the OVC, including four matchups against Missouri Valley Conference foes (Northern Iowa, Indiana State, Evansville and Drake). EIU will also face two Big Ten opponents and two teams from the Horizon League while playing one Mid-American Conference team versus in-state rival Northern Illinois. The Panthers home opener is slated for Aug. 24 against Northern Iowa. EIU opens OVC action on Sept. 23 at SIU Edwardsville who is competing in its first full year as a NCAA Division I member. Belmont recently joined the OVC and will begin its first year in the conference this fall. EIU will face Belmont on senior day on Oct. 26.

The Panthers have a produced a conference-best, five “Players of the Year” in addition to having three players earn “Freshman of the Year” accolades. As previously mentioned, the Panthers have finished lower than fifth in the final conference standings only five times (through 14 years). CHERRY NAMED ASSISTANT SOCCER COACH Jason Cherry was hired as an assistant coach in the spring following a one-year stint at East Carolina University. During the 2011 season, he helped the Pirates post an 11-8-1 overall record and advance to the Conference USA Tournament Semifinals after being absent from the tournament since 2008. Prior to ECU, he was the top assistant coach at Western Illinois from 2008-11. From 2005-08, he was the associate head men’s soccer at Bethel College. Cherry played collegiately at Goshen College (NAIA) from 1993-94. The South Bend, Ind., native earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Western Illinois in the spring of 2011.

2011 IN REVIEW (CONTINUED) • Defensively, Jessica Taldone posted a 1.20 goals against average the fourth best average in the conference. Taldone also posted the fourth most shutouts in the OVC with five and the second most saves with 106.

EIU ADVANCES TO 13TH CONSECUTIVE OVC TOURNAMENT In 2011, the Panthers advanced to their 13th consecutive OVC Tournament - the most by any school in the conference. EIU has advanced to the conference tournament every year since the OVC began sponsoring women’s soccer in 1998.

• Senior Sam Balek played in 7,124 minutes throughout her Panther career, the most in school history. She also started in 78 career matches, tied for the seventh most in school history.

Entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed, the Panthers looked to upset No. 3 seed and eventual tournament champion UT Martin. Senior defender Sam Balek (pictured above) scored her first career goal on a header in the 38th minute off a corner kick from classmate Ashley Eck. EIU would take its 1-0 lead into halftime.

• Three other seniors in Hillary Blake, Ashley Eck and Erika Prazma also graduated with their names in the record book. Hillary Blake ranks second in career minutes played (6,272) while Eck ranks seventh (4,719) and Prazma ranks eighth (4,584). • EIU improved to 9-4-2 in the series history against in-state rival Western Illinois with a 1-0 shutout over the Leathernecks on Sept. 9. The Panthers are 6-1-1 in home matches against the in-state foe.

However, the Skyhawks would net an equalizer only seven minutes into the second half on a goal by Brooke Robertson. The match looked as if it might go into overtime, but Rosaelia Loza scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to end the Panthers season.

• EIU lost 10 or more matches for only the fifth time in school history. The last time the Panthers lost 10 or more matches was during the 2008 season.

GERMANN, RADLOFF EARN ALL-OVC HONORS Eastern Illinois women’s soccer players Kristin Germann (pictured) and Meagan Radloff both earned AllOhio Valley Conference honors during the 2011 season. Germann earned second-team accolades while Radloff was named to the all-newcomer team. Germann earned all-conference honors for the third time in her career as she was tabbed to the allnewcomer team in 2009 and the all-tournament team in 2010. The Carbondale, Ill., native paced the Panther offense with a team-leading 12 points (five goals, two assists). Radloff became the sixth Panther player in school history to be named to the all-newcomer team. EIU has had an individual selected to the team since the OVC started naming an all-newcomer team in 2006. Radloff played in 19 matches, making 14 starts during the season. EIU has had a total of 68 all-conference honorees since the conference began sponsoring women’s soccer in 1998.

championship teams 1999 • Record: 11-9 OVC Regular Season and Tournament Champions In only their second year in the OVC, the Panthers posted an undefeated 5-0 record in conference action to capture their first regular-season title. EIU would eventually go on to win their first tournament title as well. Two players in Ida Hakansson and Cara LeMaster would end up earning individual accolades at the conclusion of the season. Hakansson was named ‘Player of the Year’ while LeMaster was tabbed the ‘Freshman of the Year’.

2000 • Record: 15-4-1 OVC Regular Season Champions In 2000, the Panthers again would post a 5-0 record in OVC play to capture the regular-season title for the second consecutive year. The 15 wins is the second most in single-season history behind the 1996 squad that won 16 matches. After defeating Morehead State 3-1 in the first match of the conference tournament, the Panthers were upset in the tournament finale by Tennessee Tech, 1-0, in an overtime thriller. Beth Liesen was named the conference’s ‘Freshman of the Year’ after leading the Panthers in scoring with 33 points. She posted 15 goals, the fifth most in singleseason history, to go along with three assists. Devon Bissel was named ‘OVC Player of the Year’ after recording 10 assists and three goals. Bissel’s 10 assists are tied for the sixth most in EIU single-season history. In addition to the player awards, head coach Steve Ballard was named the ‘OVC Coach of the Year’ for the first time in his coaching career.

championship teams 2001 • Record: 14-6 OVC Tournament Champions The 2001 campaign marked the beginning of four consecutive OVC Tournament Championships for the Panthers. Beth Liesen and Devon Bissell continued to lead a high-powered offense in 2001, combining to score 59 of the team’s 128 points. Liesen scored 18 goals and added five assists while Bissell recorded an EIU singleseason record 16 assists. Liesen also set a conference single-season record with nine game-winning goals. The Panthers advanced to their first NCAA Tournament, facing Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 16. The Fighting Irish handed the Panthers a 2-0 loss.

2002 • Record: 12-8-2 OVC Tournament Champions In 2002, the Panthers won their second consecutive OVC Tournament Title. Southeast Missouri State won the regularseason title in 2001 and 2002, but lost to the Panthers both years in the conference tournament finale. Beth Liesen again paced the Panthers in scoring with 26 points (nine goals, eight assists). EIU faced another team from Indiana in the NCAA Tournament, facing Purdue in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 5. Arguably the closest game in posteason history for EIU, the Panthers took the Boilermakers to double overtime only to loss the match, 3-1, on penalty kicks.

championship teams 2003 • Record: 11-6-5 OVC Tournament Champions As far as records are concerned, the 2003 season was one of the most successful in OVC history. As a team, the Panthers set three singleseason records highlighted by the squad scoring 50 goals - the most in OVC history. Individually, Beth Liesen set seven single-season OVC records on her way to capturing ‘Player of the Year’ honors. She scored 49 points, including 20 goals. Conference newcomer Samford won the regular-season title, but the Panthers would win their third tournament title in a row. In the NCAA Tournament, EIU dropped a 1-0 contest to Missouri in Columbia, Mo., on Nov. 14.

2004 • Record: 13-6-2 OVC Tournament Champions The 2004 squad captured an unprecedented fourth consecutive OVC Tournament title. Despite the graduation of arguably the best player in conference history in Beth Liesen, the Panthers simply reloaded. Michelle Steinhaus led the Panthers in scoring with 26 points (10 goals, six assists) while being named the ‘OVC Freshman of the Year’. For the third time in four years, the Panthers were sent to South Bend, Ind., in the NCAA Tournament where they would face Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish defeated the Panthers, 4-0, on Nov. 12.
