The results are in for the online survey regarding the proposed 1:1 initiative, which was available to students, teachers and Lawrence Township community members. The survey found that 84 percent of the 1,406 surveyed parents believe that the 1:1 initiative should be adopted by Lawrence high schools. It also found that 83 percent of teachers feel that giving students Chromebooks would benefit their education.

LT students now able to choose high school CarolineVarie

carolinevariecub@gmail.com Beginning next year, Lawrence Township (LT) families will be able to choose the primary, middle and high schools that their children attend.

The LT Board of Education approved a policy that will allow students to request enrollment at any school in the district, regardless of school boundaries, “provided there is capacity for the school and/or grade level to accept transfers.” The capacity of each school’s grade levels will be calculated by the district and approved by the board to determine the number of available seats, if any, within a school.

“The future benefits are exponential,” principal Rocky Valadez said. “It really forces us as high schools to look at what we are offering in our building.”

Priority will be given to resident students, and to students for whom transportation is provided by the district. While the district will continue to provide transportation for students to their resident schools, transfer students will be responsible for providing their own transportation. A student who, for example, lives within Lawrence North boundaries and requests enrollment at Lawrence Central, is responsible for providing his or her own transportation. Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, incoming seniors will be required to have an additional meningococcal shot. The shot prevents the spread of bacterial meningitis, a life-threatening disease characterized by inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

Students are currently required to have one shot upon entrance to the sixth grade, and starting next year a second shot will be required of all students before entering their senior year.

Lanich state’s top journalism student AnnaZanoni annazanonicub@gmail.com Senior Carley Lanich, editor in chief of the Cub Reporter, is Indiana’s 2014 Student Journalist of the Year.

The Indiana High School Press Association chose her from among six Lanich finalists. The honor was announced March 5 at the IHSPA’s First Amendment Symposium at the Statehouse downtown.

“It was an incredible honor,” Lanich said. “It took a little while to sink in, but it was incredibly rewarding to have my hard work, as well as the hard work of the (Cub Reporter) staff, be recognized on such a grand scale.”

Adviser Elizabeth Granger said she knew Lanich was a strong contender for the honor. “She knows journalism well,”

Granger said. “She also has strong ethics and a sense of good taste. That’s definitely a winning combination.”

According to Granger, Lanich has covered a number of difficult issues in an extremely professional manner. “I remember how nervous she was the first time she had to get a police report,” Granger said. “But she persevered.”

Granger said Lanich demonstrates a sense of poise that’s sometimes missing in professional journalists she’s worked with.

Lanich said that today’s “great journalists must be versatile and flexible. They must be able to communicate across platforms, open to try new things, and able to work well with others.”

This year the Cub Reporter has added social media to its list of vehicles to spread the news. Granger said it was Lanich’s know-how and insistence that brought it about.

Lanich is LC’s third student journalist to earn the state’s top honor. She joins Sean Jordan from 2010 and Lisa Schubert from 1998.

Lanich’s portfolio has gone on to national judging through the Journalism Education Association. The national winner will be announced at a San Diego convention in mid-April.

As a member of the IHSPA student board, Lanich was one of the student speakers at the Symposium. The featured speaker was Mary Beth Tinker; the Supreme Court case, Tinker vs. Des Moines, opened doors for students’ free speech in 1969.

Several other honors were announced at the Symposium. Cub Reporter co-sports editor Drew Nixon was chosen to attend either a Pacers basketball practice or the Indianapolis 500 Media Day in late May as a member of the press.

“I chose the Indy 500 Media Day because it’s a worldwide event that has numerous drivers from other countries participating in it,” Nixon said. “I may have the chance to meet journalists from other countries. It’s a huge honor and I’m certainly blessed to have achieved it.”

According to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, the assault occurred around 12:40 p.m., following the end of ‘A’ lunch. The student walked with a 16-year-old male student toward an exit near the gym to leave together for an appointment. Because the ride had not yet arrived, the male student forcibly guided the female student into a locker room hallway, where the rape occurred.

Despite the female’s attempts to push away and say “no,” the assault continued to last several minutes.

Directly following the assault, the female student returned to the cafeteria to borrow a friend’s cell phone and call her mother. Her friend then walked her to the nurse’s office to report the incident.

According to the Lawrence Police Department, an officer reported to LC around 2:20 p.m. to investigate the

“It’s a good way to learn about history and also improve on speaking at the same time,” Kayley Hodson said. Hodson portrayed Elizabeth Cady Stanton,

who worked as a women’s rights activist in the 1800s.

Students were placed into groups by teacher Richard Phillipy, and created scripts to discuss their great minds’ accomplishments, conflicts and personal lives.

Some students took part in the production of the show, controlling lighting, sound and staging. Sophomore John Svendsen worked as a stage manager.

“It is an interesting experience, although I’m doing the stage work,” Svendsen said. “It really analyzes the mind and makes you think.”

“We did pretty well,” senior Ravynn Guynn said. “We just put in a lot of new things, so we have to adjust, but we did pretty well.”

formed in Cincinnati for regionals, on March 15. They placed sixth out of eight possible spots.

“The energy was definitely up,” sophomore Jonea GriffinLopez said. “There were a few drops, but I think we did well as a whole. It’s shaky sometimes but it’s going to get better.”

On March 22, the winter guard performed at the state competition held at Center Grove High school.

They placed fourth out of five guards.

“As a team I think that we really brought it to the table,” sophomore Jada Yeager said.

The winter guard coach David Crook also sees progress.

“They are more focused,” Crook said. “The last competition was one of their stronger performances.”

Even practices are going better.

“We are practicing hard,” said Crook. “They are starting

to like practice more instead of hating it.”

The state competition qualifies the winter guard for the Winter Guard International (WGI) during spring break.

“Our season is going pretty quickly but every show gets better,” Guynn said. “It is a lot of room for improvement but we are always confident when we perform.”

World remains baffled by crash

darianbensoncub@gmail.com On March 8, Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 went missing with 239 people on board.

The plane was set to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and was reported to not have any extra fuel on board. On March 24, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak reported that Flight 370 likely went down in the southern part of the Indian Ocean and that no passengers survived. This information was gathered by satellite data.

According to pbs.org, there are on average 138 deaths per year caused by airplanes in the United States.

Senior April Eales was on a flight that resulted in an emergency landing in August of 2010. Eales was on her way to a cruise with her mom. Twenty minutes after departing from the Indianapolis International Airport, Eales’ plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Ohio due to a wing that had fallen off.

“People were freaking out, especially the flight attendants,” Eales said.

“I wasn’t really worried too much, just disappointed because we had to miss our cruise.”

Senior Liza Smith developed a fear of flying after traveling home from a trip to Washington, D.C. “I was coming back from the eighth grade trip to D.C. and had just got done seeing the Memorial. Some boys were talking about how we were getting hijacked,” Smith said. “I started to freak out because I was not with my friends or family and the teacher was asleep. I

Students’ perspectives on problems affecting Lawrence Central’s halls and the world beyond 56th Street.

Open district, sound decision It’s no secret that Lawrence Central and Lawrence North, as district rivals, have their individual strengths as high schools. While both schools share similar course offerings, demographics, locations and more, they both hold distinctly different strengths and identities.

Yet many students do not have the opportunity to experience the best of both LC and LN. Lawrence Township students typically live within the LC or LN school boundaries, and therefore attend the corresponding school. But beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, students will be allowed to choose LC or LN. While students within a high school’s boundaries will be given preference to attend that specific school, opening up the district to others provides a valuable opportunity for students. An “open” district allows students to choose a high school better suited for his or her interests. For example, a student more interested in performing arts might choose to attend LC and partake in one of its many champion performing arts programs, whereas a student interested in world language may choose to attend LN and take advantage of its intensive higher level Spanish or immersion courses.

Lawrence Township has been testing the waters for this open enrollment concept in recent years with the elementary school magnet plan, allowing elementary students to attend schools based on different areas of interest at each of the district’s 11 elementary schools. Extending the open enrollment plan to high schools and middle schools in the district allows

Missing flight draws weird speculation

Did the Bermuda Triangle move or what? That’s the question that was on my mind recently.

Unless you’d been living under a rock, I’m sure you knew of the mysteriously missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. The Boeing 777 took off during the early morning of March 8 from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia, bound for Beijing.

An hour later, with 239 people aboard, the plane simply vanished off the radar, shortly after radioing the transmission, “all right, good night.”

The theories postulated ranged from reasonably logical to downright weird and illogical.

Some logical theories included terrorism, engine failure, rapid mid-air disintegration or that the plane was manned by a suicidal pilot. Other illogical theories were that the plane entered a Bermuda Triangleesque area, got The theories postulated hit by a meteor or was abducted ranged from reasonably by aliens. I logical to downright weird believe in a lot of bizarre things, and illogical. but I can’t say I entertained any theories as illogical as those I just listed.

And while it’s been decided the plane crashed into the ocean, no one yet knows why.

For all the tragedy and emotions involved in the recent disappearance of the Boeing 777, I can’t help but be reminded of the similarities between the missing Flight 370 and the plot of one of my old favorite TV shows, Lost.

learned that going with a date isn’t much different than going without one. You still dance with your friends, you still eat dinner with a group of people and you’re still able to get all dolled up. Our country has evolved to the point that even the youngest of ladies don’t need a man to function or survive.

If you’re single, can’t find a date or even don’t want a date, you should still consider going to prom. In theory, you only have two chances to go while you’re in high school. If you look back in 25 years, will you honestly be satisfied saying you missed out because you didn’t have a date?

Get with the times. Dress up and go to prom with your friends.

Have fun knowing that you’re there as someone that doesn’t need a date to have fun. The same thing goes for guys, too. If you don’t have a girl to ask, suit up and head to the prom anyway because odds are, someone will be happy that you’re there.

If you have a date, cool. But if you don’t, don’t sweat it. I don’t have a date, either, and you’ll still find me in a prom dress on April 19.

It’s that time of year again, the time when paperwork becomes a-plenty, when calculating and crunching numbers confuses people’s brains and when the working man sees much of his income go back to the government.

It’s tax season.

Many students will be filing taxes themselves this year for what might be the first time. With the responsibility of a first job comes the responsibility of filing taxes.

Senior Daylin Williams, who works at Incrediplex, filed his taxes for the first time this year.

“It was confusing at first,” Williams said. “But I think it was due to the over-complication of the tax papers and finding the right mailing address, since I did not do them online.”

Richett is a volunteer worker at the Indianapolis Humane Society (IHS).

Outside of working at IHS, she and her family have rescued several animals off the streets. Richett often rescues stray animals and takes them to the IHS. The first dog Richett adopted, Jewel, was from the IHS. She has also adopted two dogs, Lacey and Cassie, from Wei-

Experts believe this alarming statistic, a 30 percent increase since 1980 and 1990, is directly related to the higher use of earphones and headphones.

Pamela Gennett, the lead teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing in Lawrence Township, says that listening to loud music through headphones has definite negative effects on a person’s hearing.

“Listening through devices with a volume of 110 decibels (about the same as a rock concert) over a long period of time can cause permanent hearing

Do sport drinks help with performance?

“One year I gave up soda for Lent, and then I just completely stopped,” junior Brittny Woolever said. “But that also included sports drinks.”

When Lent ended that year, Woolever continued to give up soda because of the dehydration it can cause.

She doesn’t drink sports drinks, either.

Because she is an athlete, she drinks all the water she can.

“I don’t feel as hydrated with sports drinks as I do when I drink water,” she said.

Unlike Woolever, sophomore Spencer Ball drinks sports drinks all the time. For him it’s all about the taste.

“I drink sports drinks every day, all the time, because they taste good,” Ball said. “I just use sports as an excuse to get them.”

He doesn’t believe they benefit him any more than water in his sports performances.

So why consume sports drinks?

By this summer Johnson plans to make his art public.

“I hope to be at all major art festivals such as Talbot and Broad Ripple with a jumbo sized booth,” Johnson said.

“I’ll be selling pieces of all sizes and everything will be reasonably priced.

I’m excited to sell my artist cards,” Johnson said.

“Artist cards” are drawings on a piece of matt board roughly the size of baseball cards.

They’re a pocket-sized slice of an artist’s style. The miniature art work ranges in content and color scheme, but always has a quirky title scrawled on the back. One black artist card has a white face drawn with horns, flared nostrils and gnashing teeth twisted into a devilish grin. The card is titled, “De Evil Dawg.”

“I would like for my art to continue to evolve and be my personal way of expression. I want to make a career out of art…whether it’s fine art, illustration or graphic design,” Johnson said.

‘If You Say So’ a tribute to heartbreak BrittannieTravis

brittannietraviscub@gmail.com Starting her career on Fox Network’s American teen musical comedy-drama “Glee” as the talented yet controlling Rachel Berry, Lea Michele has recently transformed her image and created a name for herself as a vocal powerhouse.

Michele’s debut solo album, Louder, was released in December 2013, just five months after the death of her long-time boyfriend and “Glee” co-star Cory Monteith. Michele’s devastation in relation to Monteith’s death sparked an inspiration to create the tribute song, “If You Say So,” dedicated to Monteith.

Michele collaborated with singer and songwriter Sia Furler.

“It’s ( the song) has been therapy for me in the entire grieving process and in my entire life,” Michele shared to Billboard about the death and how it made an impact on her album.

Michele’s other songs include soft instrumentals with the piano, string instruments and a steady beat that welcomes a soothing sound to the ear. The melody and lyrics are the soul to this heartwarming album while Michele’s voice is the heart.

In the process of buying, I allegedly assumed Louder would be corny, unoriginal and have a show tune sound because of Michele’s character in “Glee.”

I was terribly wrong. After my first listen, I instantly had taken a liking to the songs “Cannonball,” “On My Way,” “Louder,” “If You Say So” and my favorite, “Thousand Needles.” Songs that I would have thought would never be on replay in my playlist are exactly that.

Michele does have a unique vocal range and sound, but any listener of her current work as well as newcomers will be surprised with what they hear.

Kicking and streaming: services compared I am going to take a break from my usual app reviews to talk about something many of us use: video streaming services. In the world of streaming services, three rise above the rest: Netflix Instant, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime Instant Video. Which of these, if any, are worth your money?

Netflix Instant Netflix Instant is by far the most popular of the three, and for good reason. It has the largest collection of titles (around 75,000), “Super HD” streaming, 3D streaming if your TV supports it and is priced at only $7.99 per month. Netflix is available on nearly every device from phones to gaming to computer devices.

You name it, Netflix probably has an app for it.

Hulu Plus Hulu Plus caters to the TV junkies. Its defining feature is that TV shows appear on Hulu as soon as two hours after they premiere on television. Hulu Plus has a slightly smaller library than Netflix. It has apps for all of the devices that Netflix does at the same price. The main disadvantage I found with Hulu Plus was the advertisements. Even when paying for Hulu Plus, I had to watch about six commercials per episode.

I bought one of these for one of my favorite TV shows Psych because it was not available on Hulu Plus.

For the next two weeks, and for the past two weeks, one of the most beloved spectacles in sports, the NCAA basketball tournament, is in full swing.

The tournament, which is appropriately nicknamed March Madness for the craziness and excitement of all the matchups, has plenty of jawdropping headlines this year.

For starters, the Wichita State Shockers from the midmajor Missouri Valley conference finished the regular season with a perfect 34-0 record.

They have certainly lived up to their mascot by shocking everybody from the media to fans and claimed the top seed in the Midwest region of the 68team tournament.

If the Shockers were able to

put together six wins in a row, they would have been the first team since the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers to finish the season with a perfect record.

Speaking of the Hoosiers, the state that coined the phrase “In 49 states it is just basketball, but this is Indiana” wasn’t represented by any colleges or universities in the tournament for the first time since 2005. That’s right. No Indiana. No Purdue.

Bears filling leadership roles DrewNixon

“We would like to win our conference and county meets … every year I’ve been here we’ve won,” Shelton said. “A goal of mine is to get a personal record and hit a 25.5 or better in the 200.”

The boys team is attempting to win the sectional and regional titles for the fourth year in a row. The girls team is attempting to win the sectional and regional titles for the fifth year in a row. And the seniors said they will make sure that every athlete does the best they can to achieve the team’s goals for the season.

The Bears will be clawing throughout the season to gain momentum in order to give them a shot at winning that state championship. The girls last state championship was in the 2009-10 season. The boys last state championship was in the 2011-12 season.

Melzoni to lead Bears JacobHelmus

jacobhelmuscub@gmail.com The softball team has finally taken the field for the 2014 campaign after a long winter kept them off the field. The Bears look to improve on their 12-12 record from last season, and according to head coach Tom Corbett, they certainly have the pieces to do so.

“We lost a core group of seniors that will be hard to replace, but I like where our team is at right now,” Corbett said.

The core group of seniors that graduated last season consisted of shortstop Katherine Powell, second baseman Brittany Melzoni and pitcher Nikki Jones.

Melzoni and Powell led the team in batting average at .369 and .377, respectively. Jones was a senior leader and mentor to freshman pitcher Amanda Melzoni, teaching her the ropes

of high school softball while also compiling a 2.16 earned run average (ERA).

As a freshman, Amanda Melzoni led the team in pitching with a 1.81 ERA, including throwing a no-hitter in her first varsity start. She also led the team in hitting, batting .400.

This year’s team has four seniors that will contribute to the varsity team, Sydney Norris, Madison Dorsey, Bridget Heilman and Aliyah Clark. These four, with their experience, will be able to right the ship for a team that is mainly comprised of underclassmen.

“Last year’s loss to Roncalli in sectionals left a bad taste in our mouth. We have the talent to make it past sectionals. We just have to execute and come together as a team,” Norris said.

The team’s next game is at home on April 8 against Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference foe Center Grove.

The girls tennis team has taken to the court for the 2014 season, looking to defend their sectional crown. The Lady Bears dominated their competition last season compiling a 19-5 record.

The Lady Bears had plenty of highlights last season as they started off by winning the first 10 matches of the season before experiencing a loss. They also were able to reach the championship match of the Marion County tournament before losing to perennial powerhouse Brebeuf Jesuit in a tightly contested match.

Head Coach Tim Taylor was all smiles when talking about last year’s success, but he expects the same, if not better, from this year’s team.

“We return the main core group of varsity starters that won us a sectional championship and a Marion County runner-up finish. To me, anything but that this season would be a letdown,” Taylor said.

Sophomore Allison Himes, who won 18 matches at the one doubles position last season as a freshman, agreed with Taylor.

“I want to advance past regionals this year. All of us returning know what it takes to make it happen and I fully expect it to,” Himes said.

Unfortunately for the Lady Bears, Himes comes into the season injured, leaving some holes in the seven-person varsity lineup. Himes remains optimistic she will be back on the court soon, however.

“It is a minor setback. I expect a full recovery and to come back and play at the level I know I can,” Himes said.

The first match is April 8, at Metropolitan Interscholastic rival Warren Central, and LC will start its defense of the sectional crown on May 22 at LN.
