H O M E O STAT I C D I ST R I B U T I O N : Balancing Industry with Nature The increasing popularity of online shopping has led to a surge in the number of parcels needing delivery. More than 5 billion items were delivered with one or two day delivery in 2017 by one company alone. Current delivery methods don’t benefit from economies of scale and have become expensive, inefficient and produce a great amount of carbon emissions, hampering the development of a sustainable economy.

The proposal offers an alternative to the existing services provided by the retail and distribution industry in the UK, aiming to reduce the emissions associated with the ever-increasing use of online shopping and single item deliveries. It is situated on an ex-industrial site that has been left barren and scarred, seeking to learn from previous mistakes and serve as a catalyst for the return of nature.

The facility manages all stages from cargo handling to order delivery from one location. Small cargo ships can deliver directly to the facility’s wharf where containers are sorted and packages are distributed further within the facility. Parcels are stored on site in a vertical storage tower that operates through a series of conveyors and actuators. These function as a simple system, similar to a vending machine. Autonomous drones collect individual parcels from the tower and deliver them directly to customers. A research and development centre aims to further capabilities in the field of drone distribution by developing an extended range and setting up a decentralised distributed network of sub hives that facilitate recharging. The building façade is perforated and designed to encourage wildlife, reaching an equilibrium between nature and industry, learning from the site’s noxious industrial past.

How free one-day shipping is heating up the planet

Amazon's drone delivery service is one step closer to taking flight

The rush toward ever-faster shipping is creating the need for more truck trips, undoing the ecological benefits of shopping online.



Amazon's package deliveries in 2017 alone emitted about 19 million metric tons of carbon, according to one estimate. "That's just under five coal power plants," one expert said.



Amazon's influence over the retail sector suggests that if it makes meaningful steps to sustainability, many smaller companies that are suppliers and customers would have to follow.

The commercial extravaganza known as Prime Day is expected to generate $5.8 million of sales for Amazon's coffers -- more than it makes in a typical week -- and that's before counting the other retailers that have piled in with their own deals, hoping to turn a profit from the event.

But all those specials come with a dark size, and that's the impact on the climate.

The race toward ever-faster shipping is driving companies like Amazon, UPS and FedEx to inflate their carbon footprint. Instant shipping not only encourages consumers to make multiple small purchases instead of a single large one, but moving those purchases to a customer's home often creates multiple delivery trips a day.

Not long ago online shopping was better for the climate than the in-person kind because it benefited from economies of scale. A shopper who's driving from store to store in a car can create a lot of emissions, Anne Goodchild, founding director of the University of Washington's Supply Chain Transportation and Logistics Center, told CBS News. "Delivery services can be better -- they can put lots of stuff in one vehicle, do one delivery route and hit lots of homes," she said.

Instant gratification But while that model prevailed in the early days of online shopping, today it's reversed, with very small and quick deliveries -- what she calls "paid butler services" -- growing the fastest.

That model "is definitely worse, and there are other compounding factors: You don't make a

Amazon Prime Air will start delivering packages via drones "within months," according to a statement from Amazon Worldwide Consumer CEO Jeff Wilke.

The FAA permit is valid for only one year, but Amazon will be able to apply for renewal.

Previous Amazon drones have been approved for testing, but each new design requires a new certificate.

Amazon's drone delivery service is getting closer to taking flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration recently issued Amazon Prime Air a special certificate to test its latest drones, Yahoo Finance first reported, and the Amazon executive Jeff Wilke said the service would be ready "within months" to deliver packages to customers.

Amazon has been working for years to develop an unmanned delivery service for its customers. Wilke, Amazon's worldwide consumer CEO, said he expects the Amazon Prime Air delivery service to grow quickly thanks to Amazon's existing delivery infrastructure.

Speaking at the company's Re:Mars conference in Las Vegas, Wilke described the new drone as efficient, stable, and safe.

The FAA has approved previous Amazon drones for test flights in previous years, but each new prototype needs a new certificate. According to Wilke, Amazon's newest drone will be able to fly up to 15 miles and is capable of delivering packages under 5 pounds in less than 30 minutes. For now, Amazon's certificate will cover only testing.

"The FAA issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate to Amazon Prime Air allowing the company to operate its MK27 unmanned aircraft for research and development and crew training in authorized flight areas," an FAA spokesperson said in an official statement.

"Amazon Prime Air plans to use the aircraft to establish a package delivery operation in the United States. This certificate is valid for one year and is eligible for renewal."

Several other companies are also testing delivery drones, including UPS and Alphabet's Wing. In April, Wing's drone earned FAA clearance to drop off packages at customers' homes in Virginia. UPS partnered with the US Department of Transportation for a dronetesting program and has been using drones to make daily medical deliveries to WakeMed in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Impacting the landscape: Pollution and landfills

An Industrial Legacy The historical industrial uses of the site have left it damaged and polluted.

The site is excluded from all nearby preservation areas and naturally lends itself to continue its life with an industrial use. After the closure of the nearby steel mill, the former breakers yard was abandoned and left to deteriorate, resulting in a strange hybrid somewhere between a remote salt-marsh and an industrial workplace. The site is eerily quiet and devoid of activity, yet littered with historical cues and remnants of its industrial past. The abandoned structures, wrecked ships and industrial debris combine to provide a distinct feeling of mystery and uncertainty making visitors uncomfortable and yet eager to further investigate.

The site sits on the interior bank of a meander in The Swale, the tidal channel that separates the Isle of Sheppey from the rest of Kent. The Swale forms part of the Thames Estuary and its banks have been recognised as a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest. The specific site in question, while situated on the banks of The Swale is not included in this designation owing to its industrial heritage, history of pollution and former use as a construction waste landfill. Shipwrecks and disused jetties litter the coastline each telling stories and adding to the historical richness of the area.

The site features a disused concrete wharf, once used by the nearby steel mill, and connects directly into what is still an active shipping lane. Its proximity to the Thames Estuary makes the site greatly suited for the import of goods and provides great connections to the rest of the UK and major global shipping routes.

THE BRIEF The historical industrial uses of the site have left it damaged and polluted. The site is excluded from all nearby preservation areas and naturally lends itself to continue its life with an industrial use. The site is well connected, featuring an old railway track and multiple wharfs that lead onto an active shipping lane.

The proposal seeks to bring a return of the industrial to the site while learning from the damage and pollution that was caused previously. A drone delivery hub will dramatically reduce the wasted transportation of goods and will have minimal chemical impact on the site. Goods may arrive directly via boat to be stored and await dispatch directly from the dock location thus removing multiple steps from the traditional delivery route. The entirety of the proposal will run on electric power, including recovery vehicles and so the energy should be sourced responsibly. Nearby peel ports has numerous large wind turbines which could be added to or serve as a precedent for the construction of turbines closer to the site.

At current, the drone delivery radius leaves much to be desired, it is therefore important that the facility will be used in some way to help develop and further the research in this field, increasing the viability of personal drone delivery services. A dockyard, storage facility, dispatch facility and research and development centre should be designed, forming one large campus that allows the various departments to weave and work homogeneously. The land is currently privately owned and not open to the public. Public access may be a consideration in the preparation of a proposal.

DEFINING AN ARCHITECTURAL TYPOLOGY It was clear from the site research that the history of the site is very rich and has left a strong mark on the site. This damage and pollution caused by prior industry led to the investigation of wound healing. The aspect with the most architectural potential was the cause of scarring.

A key difference between healthy and scarred tissue is the arrangement of collagen fibres, or collagen architecture. In healthy tissue, the collagen forms a complex basket weave type structure whereas in scarred tissue, the collagen forms a linear alignment structure. This is due to the swift production when repairing the damaged tissue.

This relationship between woven elements and aligned elements was further explored in an attempt to define a site inspired architectural typology. Initial experimentations, while successful, lacked the richness and depth that the site calls for and served as more of a simple replication of the process output rather than the exploration into the process itself.

Agential simulations were conducted in which particles were controlled by various noise functions. At a specific time the amplification of these noise functions was dramatically reduced, instantaneously aligning the vectors of the agents, the noise functions were then returned to their prior intensity, resulting in a clear distinction and blend between two languages.

A series of explorations were conducted using the produced agent paths. The most successful output was a combination of multiple processes. Firstly the paths were discretised, reducing them to move along strict vectors and reducing the fluidity of the outputs. Then a mesh was grown around the paths, merging where paths came within a specific threshold of each other.

This mesh was then smoothed and reduced in order to remove any single path elements. This resulted in a fluid mass that started to physically represent some of the spatial qualities that could be identified in the previous fibrous outputs.

Sections were taken from the produced mesh at strategic positions to obtain a variety of spatial scenarios and cover the linear alignment and basket weave structures. A third kind was identified as the transitional, occurring at the moment of change between linear and basket weave structures.

These segments were explored as they were but also reconstructed in voxel form providing a more architectonic language and richer spatial qualities.

Proliferative Phase Phase 3 focuses on filling and covering the wound. This works in 3 stages: filling the wound, contracting the wound margins and covering the wound. New structural proteins (collagen) are constructed in a simpler, linear orientation compared to the original basket weave arrangement that surrounds the wound.

Maturation Phase During the final phase, new tissue slowly gains flexibility and strength. Collagen fibres may begin to reorganise and the tissue will remodel and mature. If the tissue does not heal completely the collagen fibres will not fully reorganise, resuling in a scar. Scarred tissue features the simple linear structure and is devoid of complications such as pores and sweat glands.

Even though scar tissue is made from the same type of proteins as normal skin, the difference in appearance stems from the composition of the proteins. Specifically, instead of lying in a â&#x20AC;&#x153;basket weaveâ&#x20AC;? type structure, the proteins are pulled into alignment in one direction.

C O N C E P T U A L S I T E O C C U PAT I O N A series of the segmented outputs were situated upon the site in order to gain an initial concept view of how the proposal might work in context. The exercise served as a realisation of the conceptual approach on site and allowed for further in depth discussions surrounding the functional paths through the building and the conversion from conceptual to pragmatic.

The central tower was initially proposed to serve as a drone hive from which drones might be dispatched to the halls below before fulfilling domestic deliveries in the north of Kent. The different languages served as a response to the levels of scarring on the site, linking to the collagen architecture explorations. The top of the tower was proposed as publicly accessible, bringing a public aspect to the proposal and providing views of the Thames Estuary and the low level massing towards the north was identified as the location for the research and development centre. The original mesh wires were retained as an important aspect of the architectural typology and further explorations were needed to decided how to convey this language in a resolved scheme.

V OX E L I S AT I O N Following the conceptual site occupation it was important to further investigate the desired and previously explored architectural language. This meant moving from the previously fluid outputs to rectilinear forms that could be easily replicated with simple building blocks.

The collagen simulation outputs were segmented and voxelised at a variety of scales.

Key segments were taken and covered the 3 identified typologies or species: basket weave, transitional and linear. The segments were then voxelised at 3 different resolutions, which were later translated to 250mm, 500mm and 750mm. A series of sections were taken through the voxelised masses that were created. The cuts were taken at set heights through each mass and the spatial potential of each of the drawings produced was evaluated. The drawings that demonstrated spatial richness and the greatest potential were selected for further investigation.

Following the initial evaluation of the voxelised section cuts it was important to then investigate the combinatorial potential of the produced drawings. Open and enclosed spaces were identified, differentiated and potential connectivity routes were established. Each of the individual plan forms was then programmed to include this data and look for successful connections with other parts. Enclosed spaces were not able to connect to enclosed spaces or the walls of open spaces but were able to connect to open spaces and connectivity routes. Open spaces were able to connect to themselves and connectivity routes and connectivity routes were able to connect to themselves. Through just a low number of iterations defined plan forms began to appear, forming corridors, small intimate spaces and larger open spaces. These combinatorial plan forms were each investigated and occupied at a basic level.

DEVELOPING THE TECHNOLOGICAL APPROACH Key aspects of the building technology were studied in greater depth, developing a series of potential solutions and evaluating their suitability to the final design. Due to the nature of the project, a number of bespoke systems were developed. These included a hanging system for the cuboid cladding blocks which allowed the blocks to be â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;hungâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; regardless of their orientation. A fixing that could be concealed behind vertical timber cladding was developed for the external lattice structure. A series of studies were undertaken to evaluate different methods of bridging between the timber piles and connecting to the plywood floor boxes.

A Point of Convergence The two extremities of the proposal serve as inputs that are fundamental to the function of the main central tower.

In the north east, goods arrive in the docks where they move on to the sorting hall where they are prepared for the distribution hall. In the north-west, pioneering research is undertaken to improve the efficiency of a drone delivery network. Moving towards the central tower theoretical research turns to practical research and applied research with the main functional drone hall situated at the base of the tower. At the intersection of these two axes goods and drones move vertically where they converge and the two systems interact. A small dockyard allows for the direct delivery of goods to the facility, reducing wasted transportation costs and resources. Containers are unloaded from the ships and the goods sent on conveyor belts towards the sorting hall. The Approach The site remains mostly untouched aside from the removal of industrial waste and debris. Gravel footpaths allow pedestrians to explore the site while a paved main access route provides vehicular access. Although this route remains pedestrian priority. Parking for visitors and employees is provided off site alongside wind turbines for clean energy generation. This not only helps to retain the experience of the site but allows it to be designated as a nature reserve.

The distribution hall is located at the metaphorical origin of the project, where the x, y and z axis meet. The goods enter the hall horizontally having been dispatched from the sorting hall. A system of conveyor belts and actuators move goods to the appropriate vertical distribution shaft, sending them to their assigned storage area within the tower.

The main drone hall houses upwards of 150 drones. An aperture in the roof allows the space to act as a hangar which the drones may freely pass in and out of. Delivery drones return to the drone hall after completing a delivery so that they can re-charge and submit any necessary requests for maintenance.

Autonomous drones collect packages from fulfilment platforms that are strategically placed throughout the vertical warehouse. The provision of numerous pick up zones reduces parcel transportation distances within the tower and reduces the likelihood of drones waiting to collect orders from platforms already in use.

Technology Statement Ground Conditions Initial piling studies were undertaken, looking at different methods of piling and their limitations.

Exaggerated sections through the site were drawn (vertical dimensions multiplied by 5) which highlighted the ground conditions. Most notably there is exposed hard substrate on the bend in the Swale. This knowledge, when combined with the known river depths, allows for the estimation of substrate depths at around 19m and potentially provides an indicative piling depth.

In order to construct over the saltmarshes, timber piling was deemed to be the best approach. The timber piles will have a reduced ecological impact and do not require excavation as they are driven into the ground. Precedents could be found that confirmed their ability to extend further than the necessary 19m depth. Excavation will be best avoided due to the loose ground conditions, high water saturation, and tidal nature of the saltmarshes. Timber piles have superior performance in marine/estuary structures when compared to reinforced concrete or iron.

The timber piles and the structure would remain in the landscape once the building is no-longer in use, similarly to other parts of the Thames Estuary such as Queenborough pier, 1 mile north of the site.

The site sections showed the extent of the historic landfill. The landfill was used to dump silt and nontoxic construction waste. In 2015, it was proposed to remove 1.5 million tonnes of hardcore from the landfill, as it is of a quality suitable for use as a construction aggregate. The depth of the landfill has been estimated from s given in planning documents, covering 225 ha and reaching a depth of approximately 4m, therefore the land can be excavated where needed and aggregate reclaimed and used in the construction of the proposal. Meaning the site topography does not have to be fixed has been reshaped.

Structural Strategies At the first tech crit, a simple timber frame structure was proposed. This was intended as a conversational starting point to help develop a more appropriate construction technology. Internal forms were created by hanging a smaller secondary timber frame from the main structural timber frame and cladding this with plywood. The main downfall of this approach was the disconnection between structural strategy and the internal spaces. It was therefore important to investigate and develop a structural strategy that would itself produce the internal forms rather than adding a superficial internal skin. Facit homes and U-build houses were investigated and studied, they use structural plywood boxes to produce the building form and as such would allow for the seamless integration of design and structural approach.

The proposed building features timber piled foundations which are spanned between by timber beams.

The development of this aspect of the structure involved the study of timber structures and literature regarding strong timber jointing methods. The timber beams are spanned by a secondary structure of timber composite I beams, allowing for the placement of the floor boxes. The plywood floor boxes feature a larger top section which serves as a flange that rests upon the I beams while the lower section of the box sits between. These floor boxes support the weight of the plywood box walls and ceiling components.

Spanning on top of the ceiling components and in line with the walls below is another layer of timber composite I beams which support the floor above or roof finishes. Every wall, floor and ceiling segment is structural, resulting in a rigid, yet relatively lightweight building.

Manufacturing Process, Assembling Procedure and Construction Sequence The boxes would be manufactured on site using CNC machines that sit in shipping containers. Standard size plywood planks are delivered to site, precision CNCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d and manually assembled before being added to the structure. This allows for the easy production of bespoke, non uniform parts while only relying on the delivery of standard materials. Each timber box is comprised of CNC milled flat panels which slot together using large finger joints that allow for easy assembly. Every box would be numbered allowing for easy assembly on site and reducing the construction time as while some boxes are being fixed to the structure, the next set is being assembled and the CNC milling of a further set is taking place. The entire process is not hampered by missing parts and other human errors as further parts may be manufactured on site instantly. The construction process is relatively low tech and could employ local builders for the assembly and placement of the plywood boxes. Specialists would be required for the creation of a 3d model, associated drawings and control of the CNC machine.

Floor boxes span between timber I beams and feature slots in the top face which facilitate the placement of the wall boxes. Wall boxes are hammered into place using a rubber mallet and fixed to one another using plywood staples. Ceiling components are placed in the same manner. The boxes feature circular holes which allow for insulation to be blown into the structure making the entire building insulated and avoiding any cold bridging. The building is constructed by simply building up the layers of boxes, much like a laser cut model.

Voxelised Section Cuts Site inspired geometries were investigated during design 5a. These geometries were informed and created by a process that took inspiration from the site qualitative and quantitative characteristics. The aggregation of identical textured components was explored, creating a building block that changes appearance depending on its orientation. This study was further developed to produce the hollow charred timber boxes that clad the exterior of the research and development centre. The boxes encourage wildlife to inhabit the structure, providing potential habitats and nesting boxes.

While the building program is notably high tech, the ventilation strategy is very simple, taking advantage of the beneficial qualities that the site offers. Being situated out over the water means there is an abundance of fresh cool air available.

The low level topography of the surrounding land combined with the raised stance of the building means the building is open to the prevailing winds. The building form, being long and thin, is well suited to cross ventilation and the longest face is perpendicular to the prevailing wind, meaning that natural ventilation can be easily utilised across the full length of the building.

The exterior timber lattice structure was derived from the basket weave geometries and is intended to encourage nesting birds and other wildlife.

The lattice also serves as solar shading, blocking the direct high level sunlight during potential overheating days in summer while allowing low level sun to enter the building during winter.

Top level sliding windows let out warm air from the building.

Manually operated windows, doors and vents let fresh cool air into the building.

Vents and openable windows on both sides of the building encourage the cross flow of cool, fresh air when desired.

Air is naturally cooled as it passes over the Swale. The prevailing south westerly winds are perpendicular to the long face of the building elevation.

Cross bracing elements connect between every other pile around the outer brim of the piled foundations, adding stability and rigidity to the structure.

THE NORTH YORK MOORS CO A STA L R E S E A R C H FA C I L I T Y: A hybrid of manual research and autonomous processes.

This project proposes a marine geology research lab situated on the site of the old gas works in the village of Robin Hood’s Bay. The village was previously host to a university research lab which was closed due to cost cutting exercises rather than a lack of quality findings. The coastline features ‘scars’ which run out to sea, these are in fact exposed redcar mudstone formations from the Lower Jurassic, spanning the Pliensbachian and Sinemurian periods.

Robin Hood’s Bay is rich with smuggling history. In the 18th century, the Bay was reportedly the busiest smuggling community on the Yorkshire coast. Hiding places, bolt holes and secret passages abounded. It is said that a bale of silk could pass from the bottom of the village to the top without leaving the houses.

The interpretation and analysis of topographical information informed design decisions and led to a generative system of spatial organisation. The structures are a direct product of site specific qualities, resulting in an overall form that possesses an affinity with the site it occupies. The facility houses up to 3 live in researchers who would run the lab and collect samples from the coastline.

A lightweight funicular railway combined with autonomous sample collection robots would bring samples to the main facility, running through an existing network of tunnels that were previously used for smuggling.

Robin Hood’s Bay has a history of coastal erosion and landslides. In 1780 much of the original road into the village, King Street, was lost and since 1780 more than 200 properties have been lost as a

consequence of cliff top recession. Up to 22m of coastline has been lost since 1895 particularly near the Victoria Hotel and the main road into the village.

A very definitive sense of place is exuded by the intimate confines of this coastal village and by wandering the streets it is easy to imagine its 18th century past as one of the busiest smuggling spots on England’s east coast.

The main problems are:  

The condition of existing coastal defences on the southern section of the village Coastal erosion and slope instability along the unprotected sections of coast adjacent to the northern part of the village

It is mainly exposure to wave action which is causing the slow retreat of the coast. The dominant waves are from the north and northeast where the fetch is over 1500 km long.

The main wave energy therefore runs southwards, straight along the northern cliff face and impacts almost directly on to the village frontage.

A simple map and a booklet is now available for visitors which invites them to try and solve “the mystery of the missing stash” along a Smugglers Trail by matching photo clues at specific points as they amble from the main car park and past smuggling landmarks in the village towards the beach.

Along the way families can learn more about contraband such as gin and tea was smuggled ashore and quickly dispatched along moorland routes towards York.

Profiles of the cliffs show that geomorphological influences are significant. There is evidence of active slope erosion, cliff-top recession and slope instability. Movement within the clay slopes above the sea cliffs is dependent on retreat of the lower sections of the sea cliffs. As the cliffs retreat, landslides on the mid-slope section lose support from beneath and reactivation of landslips may occur with the till slopes degrading to a more stable slope angle. The movement affects localised areas of the slope with loss of land at the top of the slope as witnessed by realignment of the coastal cliff path. The movement tends to occur as ‘one-off’ slips rather than being a continuous, gradual process.

Map markers point out places such as the tunnel below the slipway and The Bolts where smugglers would be warned by women banging drums of the impending arrival of customs officers so that they could slip into homes to avoid being caught.

Recession rates depend on the strength of the underlying rocks. An average rate of 0.3m per year is given for Robin Hood’s Bay but this is likely to increase in the future compared to historic rates due to climate change.

Yorkshire Trails has developed the route and accompanying materials with the help of the North York Moors National Park to complement the village’s guided walking tours.

The building of the large concrete wall in 1975 has largely stopped erosion along the southern part of the village but instability still occurs in places higher up the cliff above the defences. The wall acts as a retaining wall and a coastal defence structure but it is now in poor condition in places, with several visible defects and undercutting at the toe. There is also potential for outflanking at its western end where it joins a short section of exposed cliff. The old stone walls either side of the slipway, built before 1890, are showing a number of large cracks which also need attention. If nothing was done to repair and strengthen these defences, eventually the processes of coastal erosion and slope instability would recommence. As a consequence, some 44 properties in this location would become affected by coastal erosion over the next 100 years.

To immerse visitors in that experience even further, a new self-guided trail has been devised to bring the Bay’s infamy to the fore.

Other markers along the route include the Lookout, a clifftop vantage point used by smugglers to signal to each other under the cover of darkness using lanterns or small fires.

The trail packs also provide a series of riddles, tasks and puzzles, and a guide to smugglers’ slang.

Jane Harvey, who runs Yorkshire Trails, said: “The new trail is an ideal way of linking the legends and the many different visual references to smuggling in Robin Hood’s Bay as well as showing how routes across the moors from the coast were intrinsically linked to the illicit trade.”

Catriona McLees, head of promotion and tourism at the North York Moors National Park added: “Not only will the trail help visitors understand what they’re seeing and guide them around, but it will also help increase the length of time that visitors spend in the village and encourage footfall into the shops, cafés and pubs.”

Flush with holiday cottages, the ever-popular Mariondale fish and chip shop and a museum containing a treasure trove of smuggling artefacts, Robin Hood’s Bay is a favourite with holidaymakers and daytrippers. Just be prepared for the steep walk back up to the car park.

ROBIN HOODâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S BAY Robin Hoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bay was reportedly the busiest smuggling community on the Yorkshire coast.

Its natural isolation, protected by marshy moorland on three sides, offered a natural aid to this well-organised business which paid better than fishing. Fierce battles ensued between smugglers and excise men, both at sea and on land, and Bay wives were known to pour boiling water over excise men from bedroom windows in the narrow alleyways. Hiding places, bolt holes and secret passages abounded. It is said that a bale of silk could pass from the bottom of the village to the top without leaving the houses. The main tunnel runs under part of the main street, New Road, and some of the cottages. It brings Kings Beck down to Wayfoot, providing an ideal route for smugglers to secretly access the village and surrounding area. Thorpe Hall at the top of the hill was one of the main recipients of the smuggled goods from the village, there are still hiding holes in the grounds and the main house itself and it is said that there was a pulley system for moving goods from down in the village up to the house. The Fawside family lived at Thorpe Hall and are believed to have been the major funding source for the smuggling activities. Farsyde House was another potential recipient of smuggled goods, from which the goods would be distributed further across the country.

The site itself is on the location of an old gasworks, previously operated by Robin Hoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bay Gas Co. The buildings were demolished at some point between 1928 and 1975 although connections to the sea still remain and the retort doors, built into the sea wall, are still there to be seen today. The site sits ontop of the Manar Dale Beck, which runs into the Kings Beck underneath the main road before joining the sea. Situated just outside the traditional urban mass of the old village the site is yet to be developed due to ownership disputes, however it provides a great opportunity for the introduction of a new building typology and a commercial or industrial use.

TIDAL EXPERIENTIAL INTERVENTION: A physical manifestation of Coal Washer Wharfâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s controlling forces.

The intervention was designed as a scientist-architect, working with forces, not objects to articulate the dynamic correlations between objects, environment and human experience. Language was explored to act as a basis for defining a generative process of construction, thinking about design as the manipulation of forces and their interaction with the physical environment.

Starting with an initial parent shape, a series of verbs were identified that express particular qualities of the site. These verbs were then operationalised, exploring their action potential and defining design actions that could be systematically applied to transform volumes.

The purpose of the intervention was to highlight the changes of control on the site and to allow a visitor to experience the control of the tides. The structure itself was produced through a use of contrasting processes: to grow, to construct and to manipulate, with each process relying on the one prior. The growth informed a void, allowing for human inhabitation and exploration and signifying the initial natural control of the site. The construction produced the form around the void, created with site derived building blocks, signifying the human control that took over at the site. The manipulation then alters the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;perfectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; structural grid created by the human element, signifying the return of control for nature.

The proposal itself is situated on the low tide line and allows the level of the tide to restrict access, leaving the visitors to be controlled by the state of The Swale.

This allows the visitor to experience the change of control that takes place on the site and highlights the inevitable control of nature.

A N O P E R AT I O N A L I S E D G E N E R AT I V E L A N G U A G E Defining a process for construction and exploring environmental constraints.

Starting with an initial parent shape, a series of verbs were investigated and operationalised, exploring their action potential and defining design actions that could be systematically applied to transform volumes.

A rigid process was followed, producing numerous outputs which are systematically and selectively culled before moving between stages. Initial agglomerations were created using the produced primitives in each possible combination. Through these studies distinct species began to appear which were separated and individually examined. It was identified that the voluminous species could be used to produce a large mass which could be controlled by a separate linear species in order to define openings and perforations. These initial studies also identified the success of using just one repeated primitive form in the agglomerations.

The second stage involved the introduction of environmental constraints that were used to direct and control the aggregations. Magnetism, entropy and negentropy were explored with negentropy being further developed into the final form.

NEGENTROPY Defined as a progression into order, this condition was used in a different manner to the others. Working with one primitive form it would mirror cut and fold the geometry, resulting in ever increasing amounts of symmetry and complexity.

A DECENTRALISED APPROACH TO ARCHITECTURE: Using decentralised systems to inform architectural design and facilitate autonomous digital fabrication.

This research paper set out to explore the potential of a seamless digital process from start to finish, connecting the currently disconnected processes of digital design and digital fabrication.

Decentralised systems are systems with no central point of control. Instead, the system is comprised of a series of components that are all connected via their use of the same set of rules. These systems are responsible for a wide range of natural phenomena, including the foraging behaviour of ant colonies and the flocking movements of birds. The developed understanding of these natural decentralised systems led to the realisation of their efficiency and potential.

Decentralised systems are therefore being successfully developed and employed across a variety of global sectors. This paper reviews the existing developments in the field of digital design and digital fabrication, obtaining the definition of truly digital architecture and identifying a clear gap in the work-flow between design and fabrication. In order to bridge this gap the paper sets out to explore the potential of a seamless digital process from start to finish, connecting the currently disconnected processes of digital design and digital fabrication.

It is identified that the seamless process can be achieved through the use of a decentralised architectural system. The system features repeated identical components as programmable building blocks. The building block is capable of autonomous assembly, although this is not fully explored in this paper.

The paper verifies the ability to easily program a simple digital building block and produces a series of algorithmically driven decentralised autonomous assemblies. Due to the use of a reference mesh to drive the agglomerations the design process itself is not decentralised. It is identified that further research into self organising structures and intelligent components would potentially lead towards a decentralised design process and ultimately a decentralised system that seamlessly works from design to fabrication.

THE DYNAMISM OF THE I N A N I M AT E .

The final artefact is comprised of multiple elements that help to represent the various qualities and experiences that the bottle presents to us as the observer.

Beginning by looking at how the bottle is perceived we questioned the translucent nature of the glass and identified the aspects that we could observe. Whilst we could see through the bottle, the objects on the other side were distorted and other elements were reflected. It was this refraction and reflection that defined the external form of the bottle that we perceive.

Studying the refraction and distortion patterns, converting the deformation of 2d grids into 3d forms and surfaces produced the conic base upon which the rest of the artefact sits. The surface is distorted and irregular, representing these distortion qualities of the bottle and the conic form provides a continuity of surface whereby the shadows and light from the artefact can be cast seamlessly onto its surroundings.

To encapsulate the quintessence of the Kilner bottle we investigated the sealing swing top that differentiates this Kilner bottle from other bottles. The separation from the surrounding atmosphere and creation of an internal micro-climate allows the contents to be preserved or developed. This separation is represented by the creation of an enclosed terrarium in which a ficus pumila plant, which is native to east Asia and fond of humid climates, can thrive.

Through photographic studies we identified the various caustic patterns that were cast by the bottle. By replicating the patterns and converting them to 3d mass through a combination of manual modelling techniques and CAD modelling we created a final form that embodies the complexity, playfulness and fluid lines, generating a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;caustic massâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

The caustic mass is mostly contained within the enclosure but begins to break out and reach into the surrounding environment in the same way that the bottle refracts and projects light onto its surroundings. The plant within the terrarium will climb and grow up the central form, maturing with time, adapting and modifying the sculptureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s projection onto the surrounding environment. The plant will however be totally unable to breach the terrarium, unlike the caustic element which is not bound by the physical constraints of the enclosure.

THE DYNAMISM OF THE A N I M AT E .

The combination and replication of identical components generates the form that provides a representation of the dynamism of slime mould. Each individual component represents the individual nuclei within physarum polycephalum which pulse and flow as part of the flow of protoplasm through the cell periphery. The components are comprised of two main parts. The first part is the metal section, this represents the main mass and physical presence of the nuclei. Presented in two halves they are connected via a small clear bracket which allows each component to expand and contract and be manoeuvred, responding to external inputs. This represents how the physarum adapts and changes dependent on the conditions. It can be fluid and easily adaptive, it can expand and contract and the contraction process makes the artefact as a whole less malleable. Each component was designed to not have a front or back, enhancing the ability for adaptation and increasing the variety of forms.

In the same way that the slime mould represents intelligence through simple decision making the project was assembled according to a few simple rules: Firstly, each component was linked such that a fixed node was connected to a sliding node.

Secondly, the pieces were assembled ensuring that they could not come into contact with the component preceding the one it is directly attached to. This symbolises the awareness of the slime mould, it is able to react to and acknowledge where it has been before.

Thirdly, every 5 components should feature a branch, whereby it can be connected to two other components rather than one. This represents the inquisitive nature of slime mould, branching off to explore its environment.

Finally, if the opportunity for a circular connection arises , this is to be closed with a component. Symbolising the connected nature of slime mould and representing one of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;hubsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; where food or a beneficial environment may have been discovered.

The result is a fluid and dynamic artefact that is able to change and respond to any inputs and surroundings. Each and every component is dependent on and responsive to the others, the movement of one section will pass on through the artefact and the combination of individual identical components is viewed as a whole coherent form.

THE DYNAMISM OF ROBIN HOODâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S BAY We began Task 3 by identifying the main characteristics of Staithes and Robin Hoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bay. The high winds and changes of level were defining aspects that we felt best represented the experience on our sites. We observed how the routes to both sites requires effort and perseverance to complete, although once the journey has been made the subject is rewarded with views and satisfaction. We initially began by understanding the contour maps, analysing and representing the data in a variety of ways. The coherence and relationship between each curve and the adjacent curves provided a starting point for our investigation into Perlin noise and flow fields.

Furthermore, our contour study models allowed us to investigate a second layer of understanding by exploring the various CNC machine routes and options.

These CNC routes represent the machines understanding of our particular sites and are in stark contrast to the more human continuous curves. Each layer is milled out and broken up into simple lines and paths, leading to a similar final result but taking a totally different route. We allowed this investigation to help form the shape of our wire path which blends from the human experience of fluid curves into the more angular forms and routes of the CNC. Our device accentuates the sense of the effort of being able to reach our sites, with a reward once you have got there. The wire loop model, which not only represents the physical incline to our sites, utilises our findings from the investigation of the CNC paths and the various interpretations of our sites and their journeys to them. The device requires the mental and physical effort of focus with a sense of achievement once the loop has been accomplished. In addition, it has the capabilities to create a visual representation of the site experience through a processing code. Three different loops represent the varied abilities, whilst the curves of the wire represent the human interpretation of the site and incline, leading to a more rigid and formal journey of the CNC machine, forming a relationship between man and machine.

A processing code enables the user to create their own visual interpretation of their journey via each touch, which interrupts the code. The final output represents a fluid motion interrupted by difficulties along the way. The traditional style of the device represents the former thriving fishing villages which are now viewed through modern eyes.

A N A Q U AT I C S C E N T R E F O R SHEERNESS-ON-SEA This project proposed an aquatics centre that forms the part of a larger masterplan for Beachfields in Sheerness-on-Sea. The design process began by looking at the wider issues that Sheerness faces, majorly its connection with the rest of the country and then looking into developing a building that took design influences from the site qualities and environmental attributes.

A retractable flood defence was proposed to replace the existing raised concrete walls that shade the town and obstruct all views of the ocean. The two towers bring natural daylight into each of the pool halls and the apertures of all other openings were determined by their orientation to the sun, helping to control the internal climate of the building.

The wider masterplan covered the zoning of the surrounding land but also the proposal for a new train station that could be added as an extension to the Crossrail network, extending from Gravesend, up the isle of grain and across The Swale.

DOCKYARD CHURCH MUSEUM This project worked with an existing Dockyard Church in Sheerness-on-Sea. The church currently lays derelict, with essentially just the four walls and clock tower remaining. The proposal was for a new naval museum that celebrates the naval history of Sheerness and featured a large historical scale model of the naval dockyard.

The proposal took references from the existing church and nearby Georgian terraces while not being constrained by them. A large battered wall to the north referenced the nearby dockyard walls and the bricks used were of different proportions to signify the difference between old and new.

Rather than working with an extension, the proposal sought to create a campus of satellite buildings that would work with the shape of the site and help to create positive spaces both internally and externally, resulting in a central courtyard.

Access between the buildings is through raised walkways, allowing the public to easily navigate around the buildings. This also results in a minimal impact on the existing architecture which was a key aspect of the brief.

BESPOKE DWELLING This project was based in Faversham and called for a collective dwelling proposal of at least 5 units. The site was chosen due to its character and interest. There is an existing building and multiple potential routes for access. From some routes the site appears to be an island, something which was celebrated.

The main concept behind the proposal was for the provision of non-identical flats and living spaces that give the dwellers a personal identity. This was a response to a piece of literature in which those living in simple flats explained the disorientation that they experienced when visiting a neighbours identical or mirrored flat. They also described the disheartening nature of knowing that everyone lives in identical accommodation. 3D wooden puzzles were studied initially to investigate the idea of having overlapping and interlocking properties.

This also led to the final mass which takes reference from the surrounding buildings and features along the creekside.

THORP DESIGN Thorp Design is an architecture and interior design practice, focusing on high end projects, locally and internationally. During my Part 1 placement year I worked on a variety of international residential and commercial projects. I produced concept sketches, design presentations, planning applications, construction packages and detailed internal room drawings. I designed residential properties, offices, interiors and wayfinding, demonstrating versatility and flexibility. I also led meetings with high net worth clients, explaining my proposals and working with feedback. I developed a VR model that allowed a client to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;walk throughâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the proposal for their new home in the Bahamas, learning to use Unity and accompanying software.

INITIAL CONCEPTS Horizontal Timber Cladding

A majority of the buildings on the site would benefit from re-cladding. Siberian Larch could be used as this will weather well, turning to a lighter grey colour. This colour will tie in well with the rest of the buildings and materials currently on the site, referencing to the metal and concrete structures while retaining the character of the site due to the visible wood grain.

END OF YEAR SHOW 2019 I led the 2019 End of Year Show at KSAP. I secured a record number of show sponsors and also produced a statement installation that covered the front facade of the architecture school. The theme of the show was â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Kentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; due to every project that year throughout the whole school having a site based in Kent. The installation echoed the suspended lines of hop gardens that litter the Kentish countryside.
