HILTON/ WALDORF BALLROOM EXPANSIONS Professional Hospitality Proejct, Baker Barrios Architects New Build Ballroom Expansion on Existing Hotel Property Orlando, Florida The new ground up ballroom expansions at Hilton Bonnet Creek and Waldorf Astoria sit among the existing joint hotel property. Designed from schematic design to construction phase services. Collaborated with clients, local jurisdictions, consultants, and general contractors
throughout the design process for project success. The Waldorf Ballroom is a 17,000+ single story building with a large ballroom that can be subdivided into 9 smaller rooms, and includes pre-function space.

modern, and elegant. I focused on the centre court, the main mall concourse, to design roof and ceiling options that maximized daylight while mitigating glare and heat gain. The goal was to create a grand focal space while main-

taining human scale. Throughout the project, I learned how to design in metric with cultural and religious sensitivities that directly influenced the mall function and space adjacencies.

Render Credit: Lifang Mid Concept design of the centre court, testing different roof and ceiling designs. Skylight vs clerestory, with different glazing strategies to see how it would effect daylighting in the space. Ultimately, both options didn’t work since they created a “bath tub” effect where sand would collect.

Expansion, Urbanization, & Densification of an Existing Shopping Center Toronto, Ontario Worked directly with the client, urban planners, local architect, various consulting teams, and the City of Toronto to urbanize and densify an existing suburban retail area. Designed the site from thirty thousand feet, exploring the urban grid, street realignment and adjacent connections, and zoomed into a micro approach with interior mall remodel and expansion. Phase 1 is an exploration of what happens after the existing Sears box goes dark. Exploring weather we keep the existing box and gut it and re-demise as a more feasible option, or do we demolish the whole thing and start anew. In either case, looking at where phase 1 stops and phase 2 begins, so that the first phase can function even if future phases are never realized. All the while looking at how phasing and construction will effect site access and the city parking requirements.
Existing Two level suburban retail center surrounded by parking and commerical pad buildings. 401
Phase 1 Demolish the exiting Sears anchor and provide additional retail with an outdoor plaza.
401
Phase 2 Expand the mall to the East and create a more urbanized and dense commerical environment.

ROTATED PERSPECTIVE Graduate Project, Thesis, 1 Year Mixed-Use, Sustainable, Urban Living Portland, Oregon Increase economic opportunity, promote community vitality, and enhance neighborhood character in the stagnant Boise neighborhood by creating a sustainable mixed-use development within Portland. By focusing on one site for community redevelopment, this project can act as a catalyst for future growth and improvements by promoting self-sufficiency and sustainability: economically, socially, and environmentally. Enhancing neighborhood character [eclectic mix of styles, artists, young, urban, hip, organic, welcoming, indie, hipster, entrepreneurialism] through program and architectural design will help provide resident’s a sense of palce and beloning. Using current redevelop momentum of the Albina Neighborhood Improvement Plan and Boise Neighborhood Plan will show new opportunities for improvement. Mixed-Use Traditional stacked program with ground level: commercial/retail, 2nd level: business incubator, and 3rd-6th level: residential units.
Rotation Each unit is rotated to increase neighborhood character and provide residents a personalized unit inside and out.
14
Solar Orientation The resulting volume allows for units facing different directions, therefore maximizing solar gain where no unit is directly facing south.

NURSERY & SEEDLING RESEARCH CENTER Graduate Project, 1 Semester Institutional: University Outreach Building, 3,000 sf Ptikin Nursery, Moscow, Idaho A facility desinged using Idaho Wood Products, seemlessly connecting the built environment with nautre to increase public awareness about seedling research. Concept Create a nursery and seedling research facility designed through an enhanced connection with nature, using ideas such as: Transparency, Learning Through Nature, & Integration with Site. Sustainable Strategies Using the building as a teaching mechanism by
experiencing wood through exposed structure and finishes along with using natural (passive) systems to run the facility. Green Roof and Cistern: water filtration and catchment: run toilets and sinks. Photo voltaic Panels: power electric lights when daylight is insufficient. Radiant Heat Flooring/Walls: minimize HVAC and decrease energy consumption. Computerized operable apertures: cross ventilation: minimize
18
AC. Using other natural materials such as concrete, slate, steel and glass to compliment the warmth of the wood. Providing large floor to ceiling glazing and nano walls to create a physical and visual connection to nature and the site. Maximize the Views: of the Nursery, Moscow Mountain, and the Palouse. Natural Daylighting: decrease energy used for electric lighting.
