DISCOVERING MOUNTAINSIDES ON A BORDER: MUSEUM OF CULTURAL COMMUNION France | Italy
THESIS PROJECT
While the word “border” indicates a philosophical or physical distinction, especially about geo-political and geographical areas, borders generally come up together with thresholds between them. The shared destiny of being neighbours and being fullfilled with shared trades, crafts and professions, it had become inevitable for France and Italy to overlap and interact throughout their history. Susa, as the border between these two countries and/or cultures makes one see the effect and realization of the concept of border. Being more than just a linear element, borders are also thresholds between the two bodies they separate from each other.
2019 Spring - Fall Semester Prof. Alessandro Rocca
MASTER’S DEGREE PROJECTS
Located close and connected to the New International Train Station, The Museum of Cultural Communion of Susa deepens and reflects the values that these two bodies has created as a result of their interactions, cooperations and political borders. The permanent exhibition presents an informative narration. Representing studies that was held by remarkable French and Italian institutions, the museum draws a journey through four topics; history, cinema, wine and gastronomy.

Site Plan
Another major approach to define Susa, is its quality as a valley. The valley as a geographical formation, is considered with its very dense cross section. A valley creates a relief-like spatial perception. Rather than the curvilinear path it creates from a plan view, what is hidden as a value beneath the surface is questioned and led for a reverse operation; a subtractive approach as the relationship with the mountain is handled. The landscape identity, the dinamic effect of the hills and hillsides, mountains and mountainsides are taken into consideration as a value to be discovered through this architectural process. Section contour of the site is redefined by penetrating through earth and creating openings within this density.
MASTER’S DEGREE PROJECTS
The museum consists of three different concepts of architectural spaces such as the lightwell, the cave, the “vitrin” gathered around courtyard and gallery spaces. The “vitrin”, as the entrance volume of the museum, is the part that brings the visitor to the underground level to start the journey that will end up at an upper level of the mountain. The cave impersonates the vivid, instant, interactive and temporary actions and events; the space below the dome is lightened mostly by artificial ligh. While it is not physically seperated from the open free space at the under ground level, the hanging beams and the flooring underlines its distinction.
DISCOVERING MOUNTAINSIDES ON A BORDER: MUSEUM OF CULTURAL COMMUNION
The light-well, as the permanent, still and constant volume, serves the introvert, observant exhibition experiences; lightened through the daylight mostly, which also is a permanent physical value.

The permanent exhibition is installed in the lightwell volume and presents an informative narration. It draws a journey through four topics; cinema, history, wine and gastronomy by representing studies that had been held by Italian and French institutions. The fixtures of the wall surface that is in front of the circulation core and is facing to the translucent facade, are reflecting the gridal façade of this translucent wall and representing general information about each section of the museum.

Wine section represents how the viniculture of world’s two biggest wine makers interacted and inter-developed together through the history. The collection represents traditional and contemporary winemaking tools and techniques and how they developed through this interaction of two countries. The highlight piece is a major wine region map covering one floor height between these two floors. The gastronomy section as the final one and located on the highest level, is representing a study by Academia Barilla. A collection of cooking books written in 19th century in Italy and France that were translated between two languages with reinterpretations of some techniques. The books are represented in cascets and panels are again placed with offset from the structural wall surface. Replicas of each book are let for the visitors to view and read across the peaceful mountain view.

As the Giardini of Venice is remained closed and the residents of the city of Venice are locked out during the winter period, the architectural topic of re-using Giardini Pavillions is given. Studying the Britisih Pavillion, the first step which is “Mapping” the pavillion building is managed and the architectural potentials are documented. As the next step, abstraction of various “Porosity” examples are studied and adapted in an architectural way and scaled to the Britisih Pavilion. Being two bases of this step; weave and transportation hub are selected and developed parallel to the architectural potentials of the building. This formal study which is focuing on connecting the city of Venice to the Giardini through the British Pavilion, is considered as a suitable match with a new use as a working place. Creating a “home-office” environment with a further variety of working spaces, this alternative usage for British Pavilion is defining options between summer and winter organizations. During 12 months of the year, the building and the Giardini is remained alive and vivid, still keeping the emphasize of exhibition spaces.

The four books (Quattro Libri) is a guide to good practice of architecture, where Palladio explains how a building should be built. Palladio’s designs are regarded as the incarnation of this architectural knowledge, but his works are not. There are differences, conflicts and contradictions between the description of architectural practice in the four books and the reality. Having themselves represented by pure materials of marble, stone with pure colors as white, yellow grey; the Palladian villas from exterior, are hiding the language of their joyful, colorful, picturesque interiors. Andrea Palladio was convinced that architecture spoke for itself and did not require any ornamentation through painting. However, in many of his villas the wall and ceiling surfaces are adorned by paintings and frescoes that are works of various artists such as Paolo Veronese, Alessandro Vittoria, Battista Franco, G.Batitista Zelotti, G.Antonio Fasolo. These visual elements of interior surfaces became not only ornaments but also optical illusions that are enriching the interior space perception. The interior spaces play between architectural elements such as pediments, continuous entablatures, doors, windows and painted elements; real figures and painted figures, real landscapes and painted landscapes. It is understandable but surprising for the reader of four books that there is no referring to any of the paintings, frescoes, trompe l’oils since all of them were painted after Palladio finished his work. Being dedicated to Palladio’s imaginary fifth book, which is representing the pieces of art that are inseparable from his architecture, this exhibition installation plays with painted and real architectural elements (gates, arches, doors...) from Palladian villas, this time in Carlo Scarpa’s methods.
The exhibiton installation takes place in Basilica Palladiana at Vicenza and consists of a collection of frescoes, paintings from Palladian villas. Almost all of these visual ornamental elements of the walls and ceilings have one strong thing in common: an architectural element on the very front, framing the background view. This optical illusion is creating a sense of depth and a three dimentional perception over a two dimentional element; that is the walls of rooms.

PLAN - EXHIBITION INSTALLATION - BASILICA PALLADIANA
DESIGN OF MAJOR EXHIBITIONS AND MUSEALIZATION
For the exhibition, selected paintings from various Palladio villas are installed on panels around a walking path, serving various different point of views. The architectural elements such as arches, balustrades, doors, gates are installed as seperate pieces from the paintings, not as optical illusions, but real solid three dimentional elements. As the highlight piece of the exhibition, a real scale replica of the central volume of Villa Rotonda is installed at the end of the walking path. This time the Rotonda is expressed without any ornaments, paintings or frescoes; plain pure geometry and white material as Palladio decribed his definition of architecture in his books Quattro Libri. At the same time, this ornamental visual elements on the walls of the real Rotonda are projected over the walls of this white pure replica, showing the two seperate perceptions of the architectural volume; with and without ornaments.

SITE PLAN
Analyzing the 60 year old abandoned building of Savignone, the program of a Therapy Center is defined as the new use to design and renovate it accordingly. Being an open-wards therapy center, it serves as a small center where people healing from mental diseases can spend the last step of their healing process and get ready for going back to the society. They are welcomed to bring relatives or stay in shared rooms with other patients. The tower part of the building on the west is design as a vertical core consisting of workshop units, while the horizontal volume is designed as the resitianl part, creating carefully various different levels of privacy. As one of the main aims of an open wards therapy center is emphasizing the social interactions; the gathering and meeting units are strongly emphasized by the residential / sleeping units.

Being also an applicant to the RICS Competition, this construction project is a prototypical example for a more urban module designed initially. This module is suggesting taking a better advantage of the existing building stocks within cities; such as using abandoned buildings in a better way. Being one of such buildings, the old Hotspur Press Building from Manchester is studied. A temporary function is defined according to the current needs of the neighborhood and applied in a very flexible method that would allow to make further changes when those needs change by the time. Having five different building blocks, all blocks are studied while one of them is selected to go deeper in the construction phase. New insulation and finishing layers are selected according to energy lose calculations, local manufacturers are researched. Foldable Partition Systems are applied for interiors in order to keep the adaptability and flexibility to various functions.

As the graduation project of the Bachelor’s program, an educational program is studied in a vertical way rather than the usual horicontal campus system. The initial formal study is handled by following the idea behind transition from a horizontal field to a vertical one. Visitors are welcomed to the building site by a relatively more free ground level which is avoiding the verticality. By the building rises, its planar footprint decrases to a more vertical form. Emphasizing the importance of interaction between design studios of a design academy, the plan scheme is decreasing the exact physical and visual boundaries within different design studios. Fabrication and material supply units are placed homogeneously in between design units, showing how the design process is always supported by the production. The highest levels are serving to academic staff and the different privacy levels of their office places.

Being a product of a parametric design process, the shell structure is located in the small semi-defined courtyard in order to connect the entrances of the two buildings of the Faculty of Architecture, Middle East Technical University, Ankara. The site forces are defined as the trees, access to surrounding green areas, acces to car park, vistas, climate conditions and proportions. The parameters such as the curvilinearity, openings, structural grid, and perforations are calculated according to the site forces. Grasshopper is used as the digital tool for the design, modelling and fabrication process.
