The University

Eastern Kentucky University is a regional, coeducational, public institution of higher education offering general and liberal arts programs, pre-professional and professional training in education and various other fields at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Located in Richmond, Madison County, Kentucky, Eastern has a distinguished record of more than a century of educational service to the Commonwealth. History – The Kentucky General Assembly of 1906 enacted legislation establishing the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School. Governor J.C. Beckham signed the bill into law on March 21, 1906. On May 7 of that year, the Normal School Commission, meeting in Louisville, selected the campus of the old Central University, founded in 1874 in Richmond, as the site of the new school. On June 2, 1906, Ruric Nevel Roark was chosen President of the Normal School and the training of teachers was begun. In 1922, Eastern became a four-year institution known as the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College. The first degrees were awarded by this institution in 1925. In 1928, the College was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In 1930, the General Assembly renamed the school the Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College. In 1935, a graduate program was approved at Eastern, leading to the Master of Arts degree in Education. In 1948, the General Assembly removed the word “Teachers” from the name of the college and granted the college the right to award nonprofessional degrees. The most significant day since its founding came for Eastern on February 26, 1966, when Governor Edward T. Breathitt signed into law a bill renaming the institution Eastern Kentucky University and sanctioning the awarding of graduate degrees in academic fields other than education. During this period of time, Eastern Kentucky University has increased rapidly in size and stature. Beginning with a few students engaged in short review and certificate courses, the University today serves thousands of Kentuckians. The curriculum leads to associate degrees, baccalaureate degrees, and an expanding graduate program that currently offers degrees at the master’s level in many other fields as well as the already well-established Master of Arts degree in Education and the various fifth- and sixth-year leadership programs in education, psychology, and technology. In addition to these programs, Eastern offers joint doctoral programs with cooperating institutions. Purpose – Within its statutory responsibilities, Eastern Kentucky University seeks to provide intellectual and cultural opportunities that will develop habits of scholarship and intellectual curiosity, provide a deep understanding of American democracy and the citizen’s role in maintaining its strength and vitality, impart an understanding of humans and their aspirations, enable effective and efficient communication, and prepare productive and responsible citizens. The University will remain responsive and flexible in order to serve in unique and needed ways. Within these general responsibilities and purposes, the University is dedicated to three specific functions – high-quality instruction, scholarship, and service, and places emphasis on the three in that order. Through its colleges and schools, the University seeks to offer quality instruction at a variety of degree levels in general education, the arts, the sciences, business, education, pre-professional and professional areas, and applied and technical disciplines. Through consultative services, continuing education, and the extended campus, the University seeks to provide service to the community and the region. Research seeks both to advance knowledge in the subject matter areas with which the University is concerned and to support the primary function of teaching.

City of Richmond Richmond is home to many interesting and convenient activities. Whether it’s arts and entertainment, recreation, or shopping and dining out you are looking for, Richmond has it all. With more than 100 buildings in Richmond on the National Register of Historic Places and three areas on the National Register of Historic Districts, it is one of Kentucky’s finest restored 19th Century commercial districts. Arts and entertainment take center-stage with the EKU Center for the Arts. Its grand opening in 2011-12 featured such acts as Wynonna Judd, Peter Frampton, Jerry Seinfeld, Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. With 2,100 seats, the theater is the largest performing arts venue in Central Kentucky — larger than Lexington’s Singletary Center for the Arts at the University of Kentucky and Danville’s Norton Center for the Arts at Centre College. There is never any lack of recreational activities in Richmond. An array of parks and recreational centers across the city offers something for everyone. Lake Reba Recreational Complex includes golf, little league baseball and softball fields, soccer, fishing and a water park which opened in the summer of 2008. If it’s shopping you want, downtown Richmond can accommodate you. Locally owned businesses line the historic streets of downtown Richmond with everything from fine antiquities to exquisite jewelry. There is a wide variety of stores at the brand new Richmond Centre as well. The outdoor mall offers shoppers convenience and style. Dining isn’t hard to find either. Family-owned and major chain restaurants give Richmond a unique variety of menus. Local hot spots include Madison Gardens, which is uniquely Richmond, to restaurants such as Olive Garden, Logan’s Roadhouse, O’Charley’s and Outback Steakhouse. Whatever your pallet craves, Richmond dining offers a variety of tastes made to satisfy. Never far from mainstream, Richmond offers the comforts of simplicity with the convenience of the city. Only 29 miles from Lexington and the Bluegrass Airport, Richmond is easily accessible to all travelers. Interstate 75 is a major artery of both state and national motor transportation. Richmond’s location on I-75 makes it an important factor in making the city a commercial hub. In fact, the ease of travel to and from Richmond makes the city an ideal spot for those who enjoy outdoor activities. Fort Boonesborough State Park is located only 12 miles from EKU’s campus, while Natural Bridge State Park (63 miles) and Cumberland Falls State Park (100 miles) are located nearby. Also within easy driving distance of Richmond are the Kentucky Horse Park, the state capital in Frankfort, Herrington Lake, My Old Kentucky Home at Bardstown, White Hall State Shrine and thoroughbred horse racing at Keeneland.

A Brief Richmond History Richmond was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Miller, a Revolutionary War soldier. In 1798, the Kentucky Legislature authorized the moving of the Madison County seat from nearby Milford to land owned by Colonel Miller. The move was bitterly opposed by about 300 residents of the Milford area and a fight to retain the seat resulted between Dave Kennedy, who represented the Milford location, and William Kearly, who represented the new site. Although history does not record the results of the brawl, the county approved the move in March of 1798 and two acres of land were purchased from Colonel Miller. Court was held in his barn. On July 4, 1798, the site was officially named Richmond in honor of Miller’s birthplace, Richmond, Va.

From Cincinnati, Ohio and Points North: Take I-75 South through Lexington, Ky. Continue south on I-75 Richmond/Knoxville to exit #87 (second Richmond exit). Make a left and cross over the interstate heading east on the Richmond bypass for one mile and you will see the main EKU campus on the left.

Photographers Photographers must secure credentials from the Athletic Public Relations Office and adhere to the designated working area. All photographers and cameramen must wear a visible credential at all times.

Services Game programs and statistics are provided at every Eastern Kentucky home game. Complete individual and team statistics, as well as play-by-play will be available to the media following the game. Post-game interviews will be conducted in separate defined locations.

Player Interviews Phone interviews will be arranged at the player’s convenience, but it is asked that all player interviews (in person or via phone) be arranged through the Athletic Public Relations Office. Requests are asked to be made at least 24 hours in advance.

The Pitching Staff Senior pitcher Leanna Pittsenbarger may be the most important returnee on the roster. The righty was an All-OVC first team selection as well as NFCA All-Region honoree last year after setting three program single-season records – strikeouts (297), shutouts (12) and opponent batting average (.139). Pittsenbarger’s career strikeout total of 727 is 27 shy of tying the program mark set by EKU Athletics Hall of Famer Jonelle Csora-Clark (2000-03). There is plenty of pitching depth behind Pittsenbarger. Senior Shaylon Robb and junior Hayley Flynn both battled injuries in 2014, but appear to be healthy into this season. Sophomore Alex Sallberg played an important role as a relief pitcher in her first year on the team. Sallberg ranked second in ERA (2.93) while picking up two OVC wins. Two freshmen hurlers have also joined the squad in 2015 – Tory Stewart and Tara Williams. Stewart was her high school conference’s Player of the Year as a senior prepster. She posted a 0.61 ERA and 174 strikeouts last spring. Williams was a two-time all-league, all-district and all-state selection. “I’ve got to figure out how to use all of our pitchers,” Worthington said. “It will be important to find innings early in the season for some of the pitchers who aren’t ready to throw a full game. All of the early-season tournaments will hopefully shape our pitching staff for a quality run at the end of the year.”

The Outfield Junior Sarah Fobbs will headline the Colonel outfield in left field. Fobbs, a 2013 All-OVC selection, paced the team in home runs (eight) and ranked second in RBIs (26) in 2014. Murphy is the likely candidate to begin the season in center field while Alston and sophomore Amber Murray will battle for time in right field. Murphy was a three-time all-region selection for Pleasure Ridge Park High School where she batted .592 as a junior. A versatile athlete, Murphy also excelled on the basketball court where she posted 1,288 career points, fifth most in PRP history. Murray saw significant time in center field for the Colonels in 2014 and put together a five-game hitting streak late in her freshman campaign. Alston played seven different positions in high school. The newcomer will add a speed factor to the EKU line-up as she racked up 21 stolen bases in 2012. One other person in the mix for outfield playing time is senior Darcy Schueler. “If Darcy continues to hit the ball as well as she did in the fall, I will have to find a way to get her into the lineup,” Worthington said. The Schedule As always, Eastern Kentucky’s non-conference schedule will be very challenging to prepare the Colonels for a tight race in the OVC. EKU has five games on the docket against teams ranked in the NFCA preseason top-25 poll – No. 3 Alabama on Feb. 6, No. 6 Kentucky on March 11 and April 15, No. 13 Tennessee on April 7 and No. 23 South Alabama on Feb. 7. Eastern welcomes both Louisville (Feb. 22) and Kentucky (April 15) to Gertrude Hood Field as well. Preseason OVC favorite SIUE will visit EKU for a doubleheader on March 21. “The biggest factor to our success this year is whether our core players can bring out the best in our freshmen and vice-versa,” Worthington concluded.

The Infield Eastern’s infield looks to be set on the left side heading into the season while the right side is still up in the air. Senior Shannon McQueen will return to third base for a second consecutive year. McQueen started every game at the hot corner in 2014 and finished with a .954 fielding percentage. Sophomore Krislyn Campos made an immediate impact for the Colonels at shortstop in her first year on the squad. Campos, who earned All-OVC newcomer accolades as a freshman, only committed three errors in 137 chances last year while also leading the squad in both runs scored (26) and stolen bases (eight).

Coaching Staff Livingston University in Alabama. Before entering the collegiate coaching ranks, Worthington taught junior high school in Idaho. Worthington, a 1982 graduate of Utah State, helped the Aggies capture the 1981 national championship with a win over CalState Fullerton in the finals. Winning a championship as a player, Worthington knows what it takes to be a winner and has successfully instilled those beliefs in her players. As a result, a large number of her former players have followed her lead and entered the coaching profession. A strong supporter in the growth of fast-pitch softball in Kentucky, Worthington has provided numerous opportunities for individuals to enhance their softball skills at clinics and camps. On a yearly basis, she hosts player development clinics and camps to help fast-pitch softball develop throughout the state. Worthington believes in giving all players the chance to increase their skills and attempts to keep costs low so that everyone interested can attend. In addition, she believes in devoting personal attention to each participant and as a result, tries to keep the number of participants low by scheduling multiple events. Worthington has instructed more than 3,000 players at the Eastern Kentucky camps and clinics throughout the years and has helped raise the level of play in Kentucky and surrounding states. In 1996, Worthington was given the state’s Citizen for Sports Equity Outstanding College Coach Award. The Colonels’ coach also stresses the importance of academics and expects her players to excel in the classroom. Worthington feels that a balance can be achieved, and with good management skills, her student-athletes can succeed in the classroom and on the playing field. In 2013, Worthington was honored by the EKU Department of Athletics with the Coaches’ Academic Enhancement Award, which is given to a head coach who exceeds the standards and encourages academic excellence for his or her team. This past summer, Hayley Flynn received the OVC Medal of Honor for recording a perfect 4.0 GPA in 2013-14. In 2002, Elise Burch became Eastern’s first softball Academic All-American. After graduation, Worthington’s past players have entered the professional fields of law, criminal justice, education, business, aviation and coaching. Worthington earned a master’s degree in sports studies from Miami (Ohio) in 1991.

Jane Worthington Alma Mater: Utah State, 1982 u 2004, 2002 OVC Coach of the Year Jane Worthington has been committed to the success of Eastern Kentucky softball since its inception in 1993, and the rewards continue to mount. The Washington, Utah native is entering her 23rd year with the Colonels and has guided the squad to two OVC titles (2002, 2004) and two NCAA tournament appearances (2002, 2004). This past spring, Worthington tallied her 600th career victory when the Colonels downed Tennessee Tech on April 26, 2-0. The expectations as always remain high for the 2015 team which is filled with six returning position starters and two starting pitchers. Since taking over the helm of the Colonels’ program, Worthington has posted an impressive 602-569 overall mark and an even more striking 296-214 mark in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Colonels have earned a spot in 18 of the 21 OVC tournaments since the event began in 1994. Throughout her career, Worthington has produced several standout players as three Colonels have been named OVC Player of the Year and four players have earned Freshman of the Year recognition. Thirty-four All-OVC first team players and 33 second team selections have worn an EKU jersey as well. Worthington maintains that the only way to improve is to play the best possible teams in the country. Her Eastern squads have faced numerous nationally-ranked opponents, which includes a satisfying 6-5 upset over No. 5 Missouri three years ago. Last year, EKU had games scheduled against No. 8 Kentucky and No. 4 Tennessee. Other notable games include a 4-3 victory over No. 7 South Carolina in 1995 and a showdown with top-ranked UCLA in the 2002 NCAA regionals. Worthington, the only coach in the program’s history, has built the program from the ground up, starting in her first year at EKU with the construction of Gertrude Hood Field. Eastern’s first season of competition occurred in the spring of 1993 with Worthington leading the team to an 11-26 record. In just its third year, the program posted its first-ever winning season (31-29) and advanced to the finals of the OVC tournament. Worthington then led Eastern Kentucky to another winning season in 1998, ending with 38 wins, and reached a career milestone with her 200th victory in 2001. The 2002 Colonels rolled through the league with a 16-2 conference record and captured the program’s first OVC title with a 7-4 victory over Tennessee Tech. That win also propelled Eastern Kentucky to its first-ever NCAA tournament. Two years later, EKU posted its most wins ever (42) on the way to another NCAA tournament appearance. Worthington won OVC Coach of the Year accolades in both 2002 and 2004. Worthington’s 400th career win at Eastern Kentucky came as the Colonels advanced to the title contest of the 2006 conference championship. She reached another milestone on March 20, 2011 when she picked up her 500th career victory thanks to a 9-4 triumph over Austin Peay. “Lacy’s knowledge of the game, work ethic and energy is a perfect fit for our program,” head coach Jane Worthington said. “She is a great addition and has made a positive difference in our program.” Prior to entering the collegiate coaching ranks, Wood spent three years as the head softball coach at Presentation Academy (2009-11) in Louisville. Wood had a stellar collegiate career as a catcher for Louisville from 2003-06. The two-time captain earned all-conference accolades for three consecutive years and was selected as a first team All-American in her senior season. Wood graduated from UofL in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

Lacy Wood Alma Mater: Louisville, 2006 Lacy Wood is now in her third season on the Colonel softball coaching staff. Before arriving at EKU, Wood served a year as a volunteer assistant coach at Louisville where she helped the Cardinals capture the Big East championship and advance to the regional finals of the 2012 NCAA tournament. Louisville posted a 55-5 record that year while picking up nine All-Big East selections.

Ohio Valley Conference

Now in its 67th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont University which began competition in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of Belmont gave the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since Southern Illinois University Edwardsville joined in 2008. Subsequently, the league has shown its stability over the past decade, seeing only one member institution depart over the past 14 years. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history on July 28, 2009. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences. The OVC’s proud history dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles “Turkey” Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. After Title IX legislation passed in 1972, women’s athletics began a rebirth on the national scene as the NCAA began sponsoring and marketing women’s sports. Recognizing the need to provide increased opportunities for female athletes, the OVC began formulating plans for women’s athletics in 1975 and established women’s championships in the sports of basketball, tennis and track in 1977, with cross country and volleyball added over the next four years. Those sports were initially governed by the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), but the overall strength of women’s programs in the league was demonstrated by the automatic bids the OVC instantly received when the NCAA became the governing body in 1982. The conference added women’s golf and softball in 1994 and women’s soccer in 1998. In 2009, it was OVC softball that accomplished several firsts as UT Martin (tournament champion) and Jacksonville State (atlarge) were each selected for the NCAA Championship. Jacksonville State would take it a step farther by winning the Knoxville Regional (beating No. 13 national seed Tennessee along the way) to become the first OVC softball program to advance to a Super Regional. Jax State would fall to No. 4 Alabama in that Super Regional but finished the season 43-16 (19-2 OVC) and ranked 21st nationally in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and 24th nationally in the USA Today/NFCA poll. The playing field is not the only place where OVC athletes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earn-

ing a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, the league annually presents one institutional Academic Achievement Award, as well as separate team awards in each Conferencesponsored sport. The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle.

EKU Athletics Hall of Fame On Dec. 14, 2005, Eastern Kentucky University announced the creation of an Athletics Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame’s mission is to commemorate and honor student-athletes, other individuals and teams whose accomplishments have contributed to the esteemed tradition of Colonel Athletics and whose character has reflected positively on the University. The inaugural class of the EKU Athletics Hall of Fame, featuring 38 distinguished individuals, was inducted during an evening ceremony on Nov. 3, 2006, in the Keen Johnson Ballroom. The inaugural class was comprised of The Founders, a group of 25 who were previously honored at the 1974 Centennial Athletics Awards Banquet, and 13 members who were chosen by a selection committee. Four former Colonel softball players are now a part of the Athletics Hall of Fame. In 2008, Jonelle Csora-Clark became the first EKU softball player to be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame. The Department of Athletics accepts nominations for the Hall of Fame on a rolling basis. Nominations must be received by March 1 to be considered for that year’s class. She tossed two seven-inning no-hitters and a six-inning no-hitter during her senior season. Csora holds EKU’s career pitching records for games played (144), games started (105), complete games (75), wins (72), consecutive wins (9), innings pitched (740.2), earned run average (1.74), shutouts (30), strikeouts (754), and opponent batting average (.194). The astounding numbers also account for program singleseason records in complete games (28), wins (25) and earned run average (0.97). Csora also holds the record for most strikeouts in a game (15). She is married to former EKU assistant football coach Shawn Clark.

Jamie Parker Welt (inducted 2010) Jamie Parker was a pitcher, designated hitter and infielder for three seasons for coach Jane Worthington’s EKU softball team. She was a three-time All-Ohio Valley Conference choice for the Colonels in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and still holds single season records for most hits (84) and most at bats (205). She also holds career records at Eastern for best batting average (.392) and on-base percentage (.450). As a sophomore in 1994, Parker led the team in batting with her .363 average which included four home runs and 27 RBIs. She also pitched in 37 games that season, recording 12 wins with an ERA of 2.50. In 1995, as a junior, she again led the team in batting with her .410 average, four homers and 40 RBIs. As a senior in 1996, Parker was Eastern’s top slugger, hitting .399 with three home runs and 14 RBIs. She also appeared in 27 games in ’96 for the Colonels as a pitcher, collecting 10 victories, recording a miniscule 1.67 ERA.

Diana Barreras (inducted 2013) Diana Barreras began her outstanding collegiate career in fine fashion by being named the 2001 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year when she batted .296 with two home runs, 17 RBIs, 23 runs scored and was successful on 12 of 14 stolen base attempts, while sporting an impressive .970 fielding percentage. The shortstop also made the OVC all-tournament team as a freshman. She followed that first year at EKU up with batting averages of .285, .307 and .330 her next three seasons while making first-team All-OVC notice her sophomore and senior years and being named to the second-team All-OVC unit her junior season. While being chosen as the 2004 OVC Player of the Year, she hit six home runs with 30 RBIs, while stealing 21-of-23 bases and had a nifty .962 fielding percentage that 2004 season. Her career totals at Eastern include having played in 208 games with 204 hits in 669 trips to the plate for a .305 batting average. She also had 12 career home runs, 76 RBIs, scored 132 runs and collected 61 steals in 67 attempts. She is in the EKU record book as one of five Colonels who have knocked three doubles in one game. Following graduation, she served one season as a graduate assistant coach and one season as assistant softball coach at EKU.

Jonelle Csora-Clark (inducted 2008) The most decorated pitcher in EKU softball history, Jonelle Csora-Clark was a three-time all-conference selection and holds several program records. Csora earned Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year honors following her junior and senior seasons. As a junior, she also earned OVC Tournament MVP recognition while leading the Colonels to the league championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Massillon, Ohio native earned all-conference and all-tournament honors in 2001, 2002, and 2003 and all-region second team honors in 2002.

Kim Sarrazin played four years for coach Jane Worthington and was a three-time AllOhio Valley Conference choice, while making honorable mention all-conference recognition her freshman season. While compiling a .353 career batting average during her four seasons at EKU, Sarrazin finished among the league leaders in the OVC in six different categories her senior season, including batting average (.298) and runs batted in (29). She was also honored in 2000 as the OVC Player of the Year. Sarrazin’s name is all over the EKU record book, holding Eastern career marks for hits (235), doubles (46) and consecutive games with a hit (21), and EKU single-season records for most base stealers caught (24), batting average (.420) and triples (six). She was also a two-time OVC all-tournament team selection and won the OVC Academic Medal of Honor in 1996-97 as a freshman. She continued her softball career after college by starting for both the Canadian National Team that placed ninth at the 2002 World Championships and for the 2004 Canadian Olympic Team that finished fifth at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. She is married to Patrick Blouin and they have one son, William.
