Editor-in-Chief Bids Adieu to El Vaquero By Melody Shahsavarani
I
was never the bookworm, comic book, or play-with-yourtoys-after-school kid. I was that kid who would go home and read the homepage of Yahoo News, whether it be news, sports, or my guilty pleasure, celebrity gossip. My friends and classmates were always stunned why I knew so much about what was going on in the mainstream media. “You watch CNN?” was a common question or a regular, “How do you retain all this information about people?” I just loved it. I had this tendency that when I got hold of a breaking headline, or a developing story, I assumed my friends wanted to know. When social media took off (Facebook and Twitter at the time), I gave recaps on award shows, and my opinions would be known. You could say these are traits of a journalist. My passion always tended towards entertainment with an emphasis on music. When I joined the Tornado Times, Hoover High School’s publication, my senior year, the wheels started to turn. It was exciting seeing editors
run the board with stories flowing back and forth. Toward the end of the first semester, as I was watching my beloved Clippers, I set my sights to interview this NBA franchise. I sent an email to the newly appointed owner, Microsoft billionaire Steve Ballmer, telling him my dreams and aspirations as a journalist and asking him for interviews with Coach Rivers and the team at the end of 2014. The following year, I got an email from the President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker, saying Ballmer wanted to make my dreams come true. The next week, I attended a Clippers game and got the full media experience: pre-and-post game press conferences, courtside reporting and press box seating. As the tenacity rose in me, I started to email publicists from any press release I could get my hands on. From then on I covered the Los Angeles Lakers, interviewing the coach and star players. One of the greatest tips I received, which I recommend to all aspiring journalists, is not to cover just one area. Explore writing news, op-eds, features, and even sports.
Chasing down publicists and representatives, proving to them that a high school writer (thanks to my high school adviser Mr. Crosby) can be considered as press. Then the first concert review arrived (Taylor Swift), interviews began to be an opportunity. The doors were opening. Being rejected from my dream school, USC, from high school didn’t hold me back from persisting. I transferred to GCC in the summer of 2015 and wanted to join the newspaper, El Vaquero. Sending an email to thenadviser Michael Moreau, had me nervous, thinking, “Am I even good enough for this?” I joined the staff that fall, and thanks to the advice and edits from my editor-in-chief Anahit Khardzyan, I started to explore different aspects of reporting. Professor Moreau and Anahit were great guides. As I spent multiple production nights with them and production manager Sal Polcino, gaining new skills, I was appointed as editor-in-chief for the 2016-2017 school year. There’s no easy day in the world of journalism, especially as a full-time student with two other jobs.
College Debuts Interactive Scheduling System By Alex LaFosta
A
fter a testing period in the spring semester, the college is officially launching the online College Scheduler designed to make it easier for students to plan their day-to-day schedule. We spoke to GCC’s Vice President of Instructional Services Michael Ritterbrown to find out how the College Scheduler works: What is the College Scheduler? It’s a tool that allows students to create various permutations of a schedule that includes the classes that they have chosen. How does it work? They choose their classes or go to a counselor and get a student educational plan – once they have that plan, they look at whatever current semester they’re in and plug those classes into College Scheduler. They also tell [it] when you want to take classes and when you can’t take classes. So, if you work Tuesday and Thurs-
day afternoon, you tell College Scheduler that. You can even tell College Scheduler what professors you would like to take. Then [the student] can transfer that information into the shopping cart and it will register the classes. When was the system implemented? It hasn’t been around a long time. We went live with it last spring, I believe. Before we even launched ourselves at the idea of creating Guided Pathways, we saw this and said: “This makes sense for our students.” Hopefully, students will start to use it. We have 27,000 students a year and about 1,200 have used College Scheduler. Is this a system that other schools are using? The system is based on Guided Pathways, which is a model that is being used nationwide and community colleges are starting to adopt it. It’s based on research from the Community College Research Institute.
Why is this a pro for students and how does this improve the academic experience for students? The goal is to empower students. What we’re finding today is that creating a schedule involves an enormous number of choices and an enormous number of research. We know any human being who has 450 choices won’t make one. They’ll default away. I spoke to a researcher who visited a college and said that the accounting department was huge. When he asked the students why they took the course, they answered, “Because it starts with an ‘A.’” That’s just basic behavioral economics. ’ You don’t go through and find out each one that you might be able to take and then put it in relation to the other classes or responsibilities you have. One of the hardest challenges had to be election night, wideeyed for over 15 hours. Thank you to Sal, Jane Pojawa and Rich Kontas for sticking through it together. Thank you to Professor Fleeman for being a valuable interim adviser and helping us evolve our social media presence. I am excited to welcome my Journalism 102 (introduction to journalism) and 210 (advanced news writing) instructor, Professor Cohen as the new adviser. The future of El Vaquero looks bright and exciting. As I participate in the graduation ceremony today and obtain my transfer degree in journalism, I will prepare for my next journey -- attending USC in the fall.

by nations that climate change is real, the effects will be devastating, and that sacrifices must be made to mitigate the consequences that will be felt by all. It should come as no surprise that Trump can’t comprehend this, considering the man has to attempt to strong-arm his way through everything, even for an interaction as simple as a professional handshake with other world leaders. That isn’t to say that the Paris Accord is perfect, and anyone who claims otherwise is wrong. There are legitimate criticisms that can be levied against the details of the pact. One, it is non-binding, meaning there is no legal obligation by nations to commit to their promises. International shaming and a loss of negotiating power on the world stage serve as motivators. Two, the regulations are not quite strict enough. If the current emissions guidelines are followed, we will still miss the 3.6 degree
mark. But backing out of the agreement because it doesn’t do enough is like exiting a marathon because the first mile doesn’t get you to the finish line. The Paris climate agreement is a starting point. It’s the first time an international framework has been agreed upon to address climate change, and it is a launchpad for further debate on how to move forward on the issue. Despite the short-sightedness of our Executive Branch, there is reason for optimism. The momentum of the Paris Accord remains strong. Preeminent leaders from across the globe have reaffirmed their commitments, while hundreds of CEOs, mayors and governors from here in the U.S. — including our own Jerry Brown — have pledged to pick up the slack in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the withdrawal process from the Paris Accord is
a years-long process. Many experts suggest the earliest we can exit would be after 2020 — when Trump is potentially out of office. And if the thick smoke billowing out of the Trump Administration in regards to the Russian investigation is any indication, we could have someone more receptive to climate change solutions in office sooner than the 2020 mark. In the meantime, the best we can do is hope that our reputation on the world stage isn’t damaged further. Our leadership is drunk on “superpower arrogance,” where our actions have no negative consequences and the relationships with our allies deserve little respect. This “America First” attitude on climate change is a dangerous road to travel. The destination is history’s wrong side, and it’s awfully lonely being on the wrong side of history. Pricing It Right in Indianapolis By Nicole House
I
remember growing up in Indianapolis watching “The Price is Right” with my family, everyone screaming at the television trying to guess the retail prices of the items showcased and jumping with excitement. Flash forward a decade later. I have been living in Los Angeles for about four years and my mom came to visit. During her stay, I wasn’t able to spend much time with her because of school. One morning, told me she had received an email informing her that she had a coveted ticket to the popular game show “The Price Is Right.” With pure excitement, she went with her friends while I went to school.
After interviewing Superintendent/President and Dr. David Viar for an El Vaquero article and video, I returned home to wind down. A couple of hours later, my mom walked in, and I asked her about the show. She had gone all out. She and her friends had matching shirts that said their names and the phrase “come on down.” I smiled and was happy she was able to fulfill a goal from here bucketlist. But that’s all she shared. A few months later, my mom’s episode was about to air and she urged me to watch it. To my surpirse, I heard, “Amanda Cousin, come on down.” My mouth was wide open. I couldn’t believe what I was watching. Not only was she called down,
but she made it to the next level of the game where audience members, including myself at home, yelled prices. Knowing this was not shot live, watching it all unfold felt like a dream. She won the showcase and a BRAND NEW CAR. I called and asked her if I could have the car, since she had the chance by visiting me. We laughed and she told about the whole process and how she really wanted to tell me that day but couldn’t because she was under contract to keep it all a secret, even from her family. My mom is now an Indianapolis celebrity.

Sherlock Holmes Comes Alive in Interactive Play at the Arboretum By Elena Jacobson
T
he scene is set and the games are afoot! A train whistle pierces through the cold silent night as a group of Sherlock Holmeses go to meet their companion Dr. John Watson at the train station, ready to solve mysteries. This a not anaverage stage play. Unbound Productions’ “Holmes, Sherlock, and the Consulting Detective” at the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Bo-
tanic Garden walks the audience through the set, involving them in the story on a deeper level, allowing them to see the story from every angle and following along with every clue. During a recent performance, the audience focused intently on the play and laughs and gasps could be heard throughout. The intrigued audience had a lot to take in as the stories switched from place to place creating a new and mysterious ambiance. Playwright Jonathan Josephson started with none other than

the famous mysteries, in a true mashup of cases, including “A Scandal in Bohemia,” “The RedHeaded League,” and “The Adventure of the Copper Beeches”. “When seeking out source material for this project I started with the master, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and just never left,” Josephson said. “I had adapted one of his stores [The New Catacomb] for Wicked Lit 2013, so he and I are old friends.” The play appeals to both hardcore Holmes fans and people who have never read the stories. Recurring characters from the books
and shows, as well as references to original stories appear throughout the show. But it does well in explaining everything so people don’t get lost in the confusion. Tickets cost $45 and comfortable shoes are recommended. The show starts at 8 p.m. and run time is approximately two hours. The play runs until July 1 and is located at 159 S. Baldwin Ave. in Arcadia.

Paley Center For the “American Horror Story” fans, the Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles is having a gallery exhibition of the costumes and props from every season and seeing the creative process of the costume designer Lou Eyrich and creator Ryan Murphy. This event is free to the public from all ages.
Hollywood Sign Visit one of the most iconic landmarks in California. The Hollywood Sign is a great place to visit for hiking and spectacular views. There are multiple viewpoints and different hiking trails to get an unobstructed view of the sign. How about a sign selfie: Take a picture giving the illusion you’re holding up the sign. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County Located at 900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles, the Natu-
ral History Museum is not only educational but fun for the whole family, with exhibits to match almost everyone’s interests, including dinosaurs, fossils and rocks and minerals. It even has a butterfly pavilion where you can see different kind of butterflies. Adult admission starts at $12. The best part is students get a discount and could enter for only $9. The Abandoned Zoo At Griffith Park The old LA zoo was shut down in 1966 but many of the big animal habitats remain. You can go inside walk around where the animals one lived. It’s completely free and open. The old zoo is open from 5:30 A.M to 10:00 P.M, although some adventure seekers go after closing to seek an adventure. If you do decide to go later on at night, there have been rumors the Old Abandoned Zoo is haunted so there is a little extra fun for those of you that are into the paranormal side of things. the signs. Dodgers Stadium For all the sports fans or anyone looking for a great ball game there is no better place to go in L.A than a Dodgers game. What could be better than a ball game on a summer night with your family? You could enjoy a classic Dodger Dog and you never know what stars will also come out to enjoy a game as well. The Stadium is also home to a great view of the L.A skyline. Besides a game you can always go take a tour of Dodgers Stadium to view World Series trophies and retired jerseys of Dodger legends. The Stadium is located at 1000 Vin Scully Ave., Los Angeles. You can visit the top deck store open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. U.S Bank Tower Slide Where better to get a 360-degree look of Los Angeles? How about at 1000 feet in the air at the U.S Bank Tower. Located at 633 West Fifth St., Los Angeles, and open from 110 a.m. to 10 p.m., this glass slide is one of the most
unique things there is. It also offers one of the best views in all of L.A., if you’re not too scared to open your eyes. Prices range from $19-$43 depending on the different ticket packages. Santa Monica Pier There are great fishing spots. You can ride the famous ferris wheel at the pier that gives you a great view of the ocean and the city. For the roller coaster lovers, there is always the West Coaster.. You can also play all the arcade games at Pacific Park on the Pier. The Santa Monica pier is at 200 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, and open 24 hours a day. Also for the music lovers, Santa Monica Pier will be hosting a series of twilight concerts that are free. Rooftop Cinema Club Rooftop Cinema Club (RCC) returns for its third season of screenings on “The Montalban’s rooftop. With a beautiful city view, the event promises a unique movie-going experience for film lovers throughout 2017. RCC provides lawn chairs and blankets, as well as a set of wireless head-
phones for higher audio clarity. The series is packed with audience favorites and classics such as “Back to the Future” and recent hits like “Moonlight.” Tickets range from $19 to $29. The non-profit arts organization Film Independent showcases some of its best up-and-coming filmmakers around the globe. P
uppies visited Glendale Community College on June 6 to help students unwind before finals officially began. ASGCC set up the event in Plaza Vaquero, where roughly 100 students patiently stood in line to get their chance to hang out with the adorable puppies.
A gated enclosure was put in place to keep the excited pups from exploring the campus, and students had one to two minutes to get their share of adorableness before they had to move on. Students also received a gift bag, which contained a Scantron, a pen, juice box, chips, and some bubble wrap for additional de-stressing. Carolina Diaz can be reached at itscarodiaz@gmail.com
