It is an ode to the invention that shaped reading habits and the idea of legibility, the typewriter. A compromise between the rigidity of its ancestor and the expectations of the digital age, ITC American Typewriter retains the typical typewriter alphabet forms, lending the font a hint of nostalgia.

Compared to Old Style types, Baskerville gives text a heavier weight. While not displaying the graceful elegance of Garamond or Bembo, it displays a sturdy, workman-like feeling. It’s a very readable text face and a good type to use to add length to text, due to its larger x-height.

Clarendon Designer: Robert Besley, 1845

The first slab serif fonts appeared at the beginning of industrialization in Great Britain in 1820. Clarendon and Ionic became the names for this new development in England, known as English Egyptienne elsewhere in Europe. Clarendon is also the name of a particular font of this style, which, thanks to its clear, objective and timeless forms, never lost its contemporary feel. In small point sizes Clarendon is still a legible font and in larger print, its individual style attracts attention. [ light, 14 pt ]

Futura Designer: Paul Renner, 1927

Futura is the classic example of a geometric sans serif type. Its original concept was based on the Bauhaus design philosophy that form follows function. Futura uses basic geometric proportions with no weight stresses, serifs, or frills, with long ascenders and descenders that give it more elegance than most sans serif typefaces.

Gill Sans is the Helvetica of England; ubiquitous, utilitarian and yet also quite specific in its ability to point to our notions of time and place. As the preferred typeface of British establishments (the Railways, the Church, the BBC and Penguin Books), Gill Sans is part of the British visual heritage just like the Union Jack and the safety pin.

Designer: Eduard Hoffmann, 1957

This sans-serif font is a smooth, straight font with no more lines or markings than necessary. Helvetica came as a breath of fresh air for the United States in an era of overly complicated fonts. Once it took the stage, it pulled the focus away from flowery fonts to clean, crisp designs that got the message across in seconds.

Minion is a 1990 Adobe Originals typeface by Robert Slimbach. Minion is inspired by classical, old style typefaces of the late Renaissance, a period of elegant, beautiful, and highly readable type designs. Neue Haas Grotesk Designer: Max Miedinger, 1958

When Neue Haas Grotesk was originally designed for hand-set letterpress type, its design was adjusted for each point size, optimizing the spacing, proportions, weight, and other details for the best results. Digital versions of Helvetica have abandoned such refinements for a one-size-fits-all solution, resulting in problems at large and small sizes.

Scala Sans Designer: Martin Majoor, 1993

It belongs to the category of humanist sanserif, which is a sans-serif typefaces with oval shapes and variations in stroke thickness to create a more graceful, human appearance. It also comes from more calligraphic influence that leads to increased legibility. One very important aspect of Scala Sans is its real italics (which is one reason that Majoor is very critical of Helvetica.)

Trade Gothic Designer: Jackson Burke, 1948

Trade Gothic does not display as much unifying family structure as other popular sans-serif font families, but this dissonance adds a bit of earthy naturalism to its appeal. Trade Gothic is often seen in advertising and multimedia in combination with roman text fonts, and the condensed versions are popular in the newspaper industry for headlines.
