As a true dreamer, I grant myself permission to take a short mental break during a long work day. Occasionally I slip away for that brief moment to a place inspired by something I have either seen or read about that I found intriguing. Most recently, the magnificent southwest sunsets combined with a soothing body of water were becoming my ongoing illusionary distractions. It was time to get out of my routine and add a splash of experience to my thirsty soul. Kayaking. First developed for the purpose of hunting by the Inuit, an Arctic people, the sport has seen an explosive growth in popularity. Even though kayaking has been an Olympic sport since 1936, athletes are turning to kayaking as a great source of cross-training. The benefits include a full-body workout without inflicting prodigious demands on the joints that occurs in most fitness regiments. For me, it was all about the escape – and I knew just who to call to create my own utopia.

A beginner in kayaking can learn the necessary skills during a single lesson. So I booked my excursion through the Red Mountain Resort which offers guided outdoor adventures including kayaking. Along with the Élan staff, I asked Tracey Welsh, General Manager of Red Mountain to join me for a quiet evening on the smooth water at Gunlock Reservoir. The action of continuous flat water paddling exercises all the muscles in your upper body particularly the arms and shoulders. We further learned that a well-executed stroke also works out your core muscles and lower body. Kayaking strengthens your legs whenever you rotate your torso to power the kayak. If you choose to kayak for one hour at 3 mph, you will be performing 1,500 strokes resulting in an intense, full-body workout. With considerable aerobic and weight loss benefits, one hour of kayaking can burn 395 to 465 calories.

Kayaks today are lightweight, portable and affordable. This has been in no small part due to the sit-on-top kayak. These kayaks have opened the sport to many who had previously seen kayaking as inaccessible or dangerous. The sit-on-top kayak has eliminated these barriers and allows for participants in other activities such as diving, fishing and photography to incorporate kayaking. For us, on that day at Gunlock, it was about the solitude. The sound of gentle paddle strokes breaking the stillness of the water was hypnotic. We glided along the top of Gunlock slipping away into the utopia I had visualized while sitting behind my computer. With our kayaks pointing towards the west, we watched the glorious sunset before paddling back to our reality.
