el:ch landscape architects profile

el:ch landscape architects were founded in 2005 in Munich, after several jointly won awards in international architectural competitions. Among others a first price in the international design competition for the Lower Austrian Garden Exhibition Tulln 2008 in 2003. One of el:ch’s most acclaimed projects is the redesign of Landhauspark and Promenade in Linz, Upper Austria. Completed in 2009 it was awarded the Austrian Clients Award 2009. Both partners came together while working for the office of Rainer Schmidt Landscape Architects (Munich), designing and implementing the Federal Garden Exhibition Munich 2005. In 2003 both were part of the joint design team of LAS and Turenscape (Beijing) that won a 1st price for Beijing Olympic Green. el:ch‘s line of experience spans public and private spaces all the way up to larger scale urbanism and masterplans. A major part of our projects is recruited through successful participation in international design competitions, also in cooperation with various architectural firms. It is our main goal to achieve a uniquely crafted solution for any given situation, rooting firmly within the site’s specific qualities. Intense work with plants and materials and thorough consideration of details are among our top priorities during the implementation of our designs. Our range of projects covers private and public housing projects, urban parks and pedestrian areas as well as spaces related to buildings of cultural and other specific usage. Moreover we are involved in a number of conversational projects reclaiming former military spaces and improving existing city districts.

1st price

The former "Platz der Stadt Hof", today called "Alfred-Scholz-Platz", used to be but a widening of the sidewalk next to a busy road set in Berlins notorious multi-culti district : Neukölln. After removal of the junction with a side street, there was room to create a veritable square with an entirely new set of qualities. The redesigned plaza marks a recognizable urban space to be used for various activities such as markets, exhibitions and other events. It's design quotes materials and features of the Neukölln sidewalks and combines them to into a recognizable pattern . Using few and simple elements, such as trees, benches and pavement, fundamental urban qualities are resurrected. An important part of the design is a local artist's contribution: the pavement unites local craftsmanship with mediterranean mosaique techniques, resulting in multiple levels of usability and meaning. The commonly used "mosaic pavement" of Berlin sidewalks is employed to shape the statistical image of the local migratory population. The result is an abstract mosaic of stones from verious world regions, a carpet representing today's Neukölln population.

landhauspark and promenade linz competition 2006 1st price  |  client's award 2009

The historical space between the Landhaus, historical seat of Upper Austria's gouvernment, and Promenade was transformed from urban gap to municipal park, complete with recreative value and play areas. Picturesque trees, lawns and perennial plantings unite to create a green oasis. The Park draws it's unique character from the abundant tree population, which is bound together by a broad strip of turf. Paired with a stone bench the park's design is laid out simply but effecticvely. A second green ribbon harbours herbaceous and woody plants to filter adverse influences of the adjacent roadway. The sidewalks are transformed by a bold, plank-like granite pavement, introducing an open, spacious atmosphere. The aim of the design was to purge unnessessary additions and constructions while shaping the area into a quality urban space. Lost views and connections were reinstated, new usages implemented, former qualities refound.

The site of the former Leighton Baracks is complementary to the Würzburg city center: Leighton is up on the hill, the city's center in the valley below. Leighton provides room for experimentation, the center preserves history. Main goals of the masterplan are to promote an exchange between new and old city parts and to link the university´s grounds with the emerging residential district. At the heart of the area the future Leighton Park affords stunnig views spectacular views toward the newly developed areas, to the fortress Marienberg and the surrounding landscape. The park follows the existing runway and is oriented in an east-westerly direction. It's open character, in reminiscence of the former American spirit, provides a flexible stage for the 2018 garden exhibition. At the western end of the runway, the new University Promenade crosses the park. It connects the existing campus Hubland with its northern expansion areas, residential developments and green spaces. Northward this axis rises to form a balcony overlooking the entire park and surrounding landscape.

Built in 1907 at Dom Pedro Square, the Heiliggeist Nursing Home is operated until present day by the traditional Heiliggeistspital Foundation. The protected ensemble had its own stables and outbuildings. It was also listed as a historical garden site. However, economical pressures did not allow for the maintenance of the rural parts, that fell into disuse decades ago. In the course of extensive renovation work, two wings of the main building were remodeled for residential use. In place of the derelict farm buildings, a new residential building today forms a common yard together with the older building. The former ornamental garden has been carefully adapted to the new requirements, it's basic geometry was maintained and adapted in the new part of the courtyard. A play area combines with the central lawn to give the entire court a common center. Existing artefacts, such as fountain bowls, vases and enclosures, were preserved to contrast and enrich modern design features of a more straightforward geometry.

from the jury's verdict German Landscape Architecture Price 2011: We would like to especially emphasize the elegant linkage between large areas with wooden benches, terraces and smaller courts. The use of plants is implemented in a subtly differentiated, high quality way. Perennial groundcovers and grasses surround geometrically formed wooden platforms, creating a serene ambience. Minimal variety of materials, simple lines and lush planting make this project an urban oasis for its residents.

When the Cantina di Terlano (Winery Terlan), one of the oldest wine cellars of South Tyrol, was annexed in 2010, a roof garden with a scenic view was created on top of the new outbuilding. This wine garden is dedicated to the experience of the spectacular landscape and thus closely connected to the locally produced wines. With its glass balustrades the garden merges seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. A sequence of green carpets and wooden terraces, inspired by local field structures, is arranged on a surface covered in porphyry gravel. Locally quarried porphyry, the warm hue of corten steel and a lush green carpet combine to form a harmonious composition within a scenic setting. Seasonally emerging bulbs, such as Allium sphaerocephalon, add transient colour. Fragrant herbs and a pomegranate tree planted in a square metal container complete the sensory experience, linking the garden to regional agricultural tradition.

Expanding the university campus means to extrapolate spatial qualities of both universities: the Technical University and the University of the Arts. On the one hand the university's presence in the city is defined by a veritable townscape of university buildings, on the other hand new identity stems from a variety of high-quality, in-campus green spaces. Employing compact building structures, clear urban edges and spaces are defined. Subtly structured open spaces in turn generate atmospheric qualities. Character and volume of the new developments are drawn from the existing buildings, the site's specific characteristics and spatial references toward adjacent spaces: The Campus Forum serves as a means to create identity and connect - it forms the green center of the campus expansion.

The park's topography makes use of the landfill resulting from the development of the new residential area, the Sonnenwendquartier. Central park areas remain at the current site level. The level difference beween green area and surrounding cityscape is shaped into an urban terrace protruding onto the lower park level. The result is a clearly framed green space, which widens and narrows, affording a variety of spatial experiences. EF

The park unfolds between two promenades - the Park Boulevard to the east and the Europe terrace to the west. Green areas in between alternatingly adhere to one or the other, crearing a sequence of plazas. The resulting network of paths enables purposeful movement but it invites the retreat into smaller spaces, too. The park has niches for smaller and more specialized user groups, situated in the less spacious entrance areas. It's centrally located lawn invites users to get into contact and interact. An

with robert meyer architects, munich

The previous landfill site Leppe was to become a knowledge base for environmental technologies and techniques. Focused on transformation [metabolism], recycling and environmental services, the location Leppe simultaniously was to be integrated into it's natural surroundings and made accessible to visitors at the same time. Symbol and mission statement of the proposed project is the nature trail "Annelidus". The so called earthworm embodies natural transformation of substances in a striking way. As a "wormhole" Annelidus is the connection between separated areas, it grants insight and outlooks, it separates and bridges at the same time . The segmented structure of the worm's body facilitates an integration of different functional areas. The torso is transformed according to necessity to become a bridge, a tunnel or a pavilion. The worm's skin becomes fence and balustrade, offers free access openings to the outside and controlled walkways toward the interior of the landfill site. Thus, the landfill can be experienced from the outside at any time. Access to the active areas may be enabled or closed, depending on the current operational state.

A distinctive contrast between dense, shady forest and gently rolling glades forms the specific atmosphere of a park who's spatial organization is based on the principle of meandering rivers. An array of straight boardwalks provides rapid, direct connection between the meandering paths along the waterways. Inside the fenced area of the garden fair, the park's meanders are transformed to become "the streams of garden culture". They create a simple structure for various exhibits while keeping a common outside framework. The entrance building bridges an incoming "landscape current". A transparent display showcasing the garden show, kindles curiosity in visitors and random guests.

Designing Landscape ? Landscape Architecture between space and time Unlike concrete architecture shaped from mineral building materials, landscape architecture has a much closer relationship to the temporal, due to its use of vegetal matter and perishable materials. Designs of earlier masters in the field embraced this aspect more fully than todays ideas - neither Le NĂ´tre nor FĂźrst PĂźckler have seen the completion of their imaginary work. Would such monumental visions have any chance to succeed in today's undertow of rapid currents and fleeting trends? Would their undoubtedly high quality be recognized at all? And would the young parks be granted the necessary long years of development? Or would their outdated shapes be subject to a "modernization" after a few decades? The phenomenon of culturally recognized architectural landmarks that have survived previous centuries and continue to enjoy a widespread appreciation, provides a revealing indicator of the design's quality. We admire and adore archetypal creations like Stonehenge or complex creations such as the Park of Versailles. What distinguishes these works and how are present designs, created in the era of "design services" able to catch up with them? Constantly new trends and styles pop up and die down in much shorter periods of time. Culminating in a trend towards the temporary, the aim is to entertain without any claim to permanence. Garden and flower shows are enjoying abundant popularity and every new garden festivals lenghten the list of the existing ones . Such ephemera mark a pole diametrically located to the timeless works of bygone generations. Another trend is the do it yourself - urban gardening is all the rage. A largely rule-free evolution without organizing hand is the ideal here . Are there objective criteria for the quality of a design ? Where does the claim that this or that proposal is "achieved" or simply "good design" ? Has not such a proclamation a halfrate and is it subject to zeitgeist? Once well - always good ? And if something like a good design exists - it is possible to learn how to get there ? Or is it simply an inherited talend that can not be taught ? Students can be provided with basic tools and strategies for use in the design proces. Using design exercises they can experiment with their application and fusion are. But the process of designing is not a step-by-step procedure - its outcome is open and changeable. Each project is another research contract in unknown territory, it's boundaries to be staked anew. Basic task of teaching in the Department of Design is an understanding of the design as a dialogue with the students - with themselves, with colleagues and teachers, users and politicians - to be developed as part of their professional activity .
