Editorial: The Future of Skateboarding. The future of the sport is in your hands. It’s time to get serious about skateboarding. We need skaters that can explain skateboarding at a professional level. It’s not just about the partying and being crazy. We all know that skateboarding is much more than that and we need people who are hyped about the sport, want to get out and do it, and be a part of it, no matter who they are. Interview Where are you from? I’m from Anthony, NM. How long have you been Skating? I’ve been skating for 5 years How old are you? I’m 21. What was your first board? Years ago, I went downtown (Las Cruces, NM) to a skate shop called quickens and bought a cheap board. It was not a pro deck (Laughs). Do you consider yourself a street or vert skater? I’m a street guy but I’d like to learn skate vert. It’s hard when you live in Anthony. Our Skate Park does not have bowls. What is the craziest trick that you have ever tried? In Las Cruces, we were trying to launch off an ultra into a five foot bowl. However, we did not land it. What is your favorite trick? Tre flip What are you working on? I’m trying to get a Crooked Nollie Heel. I’m still working on it. What is your perfect board setup? I like Girl decks, size 8.25, with thunder trucks, spitfire wheels, shake junk bearings and Grizzly grip. I like Grizzly because it won’t wear your shoes out like Mob grip. Who supports your skateboarding? My mom, sisters and all of my skating friends support me. Where can you be seen? I can be seen at the Anthony Skate Park but, I’m everywhere. On weekends, I try to go to El Paso. I like to skate college campuses. One of favorite places is NMSU. Have they run you off campus? Yes. However after 5pm, it’s ok. There is no one around. Who is your favorite pro? Paul Rodriguez. He is doing great with his new company. I also like Nick Tucker but he is not a pro yet. What do you want to do with skateboarding? I just want to continue skating and see how good I can get. Will you ever quit? No, when I get older, I’ll just cruise like you. (Laugh) If you were a pro, which team would you like to join? I like to join Skate Mental and/or Toy Machine. What advice would you give beginners? Stick to it, be persistent, be patient and never give up. What would be your dream skateboard travel destination? I’d like to visit China. It looks like a great place to skate. Are you working? Yes, I help my dad at the auto shop and I work at NMSU. Are you going to school? Yes, I’m going to NMSU and majoring in finance. What do you do when you get up in the morning? I usually check my YouTube feeds and to go “The Berrics”. It keeps me up to date with

skateboarding.
What’s one trick that you cannot do? I struggle with anything fakie and lately, heel flips. I just don’t know why? What do you do to warm-up? I stretch, do some manuals, hit the rails, and then, try to hit something big. What do you think of the El Paso Skate scene? Last year, we attended a downtown event called “Go Skate Day” and it was amazing. It’s definitely getting bigger. What do you think of about a team competition? It would be good but the judging would be hard. I think that we could develop a simple scoring system. Yes, I agree. It would be different. I got the idea from watching Street League. You are just trying to promote the local skate scene. Yep, I’m just trying to help. It’s a way to keep skaters motivated. We need to start promoting our local skaters. Some of these guys are amazing. I do my part by giving away blanks to skaters in need of a deck. I’ve see guys rolling around the parks with no tails. It’s crazy! Thank you fro your time sir. I appreciate it.

Forrest Edwards Meet Forest Edwards. A member of the ZERO team. We meet him at the ZERO signing in 2013. He was a quiet and polite fellow. However, it appears that he is being portrayed as an ego maniac jerk. However, this is skateboarding and you can’t always believe what you read. So, we decided to do our own investigation and this is what we found out. Why is he a jerk? In regards to the biggest misconception that he is a super cocky and an asshole, he says that people don’t try to see who he really is and assume the worst. They have mistaken his confidence for cockiness. He is a man of few words and just likes to skate. If you consider that cocky, then, so be it. What keeps him motivated? The things that keep him motivated to skate are skating with friends, the Zero video, Baker video, Toy Machine video, Deathwish video, Shake Junt, Emerica video, brand new boards and brand new shoes, some chicks, beer, some trees, and himself. The simple things in life. Where will he be in five years? He said “Dude, I don’t imagine anything that far out. However, if everything goes as planned, I’ll have my own house and my own car. I should be set in five years. I won’t have to struggle anymore”. Why is he good for skating? Forrest Edwards has amazing skills on a skateboard. He hits the rails with the fury of a tiger. Forrest is shorttempered, brutally honest and has an allergy for high-fives. However, Forrest is an internet star, doing the rounds on various skateboard forums, garnering as much love as he does hatred by skaters, critics and industry heads. There’s no denying that he’s destined to be remembered as one of the most colorful personalities in skateboarding for years to come. As far as we are concerned, Forrest Edwards is one of the best things to happen to skateboarding. We need a guy that maintains his individuality and childish ignorance that our culture is supposed to be about. And that’s all we have to say about that!

ell, it appears that it is finally over. Yes, Motley Crew, one of my favorite bands has decided to call it quits. According to CNN Entertainment, all four members signed an agreement that will permanently dissolve the band after their final world tour (End of 2015). This band has been together for more than thirty years. Since 1981, they have sold more than 80 million albums. It’s amazing that they have survived this long. Tommy Lee said, “Everything must come to an end”. However, don’t feel sad. They stated their careers are not over. All of the band members will continue to work on their solo projects. There are a lot of opportunities and exciting things that these guys can do after Motley. However, if things do go bad, I have a feeling that they will be back! They are currently on tour with Alice Cooper. They will be missed!

The scorching sun was no deterrence for these local skaters, as they took to the Anthony Skate Park for our first annual “Go Skate Jam” skateboarding competition. On Saturday, June 21st, iSkatemag played host to the first “Go Skate Jam”, a skate contest for all level skateboarders. The jam format skate event drew skaters of all ages from the surrounding area (Anthony, Tx, Anthony NM, El Paso, Tx and Las Cruces, NM). While some were there to skate, others showed up to see the event, and to enjoy the food/music. The competition was held in conjunction with the Los Choppers “Wounded Warrior” fundraiser. The skaters showcased their skills to a watchful audience. The competition took up the remainder of the afternoon, as skateboarders, inspired by what they were seeing, tried their best to impress the panel of judges. There were lots of people on hand for the event and enough skaters to help as judges for the skate competition. In the end, all their hard work finally paid off. Leo Carrillo took 1st place, Markos Reza took 2nd, and Daniel Ortiz took 3rd . In the intermediate division, Ezequiel Jimenez took 1st place, Esteban Rodriguez took 2nd place and Alex Segura took 3rd. In the beginner division, Emilio Rayas took 1st, Rico Medina took 2nd and Eli Alfaro took 3rd. Having seen several skateboarding events throughout the years, I have come to appreciate the abilities of these skaters. Hopefully, someday they will skate with professionals that you’ve always watched on TV and seen in magazines…the opportunities are endless. The “Go Skate Jam” has garnered a lot of interest from the community. This is the first big event this year so we hope that with more local support we will see more! Skate On!

The Amazing Skateboard! The skateboard is a simple thing. It consist of 7 ply's of wood, metal trucks, grip tape and some wheels. In general, all skateboards are very similar. So what is amazing about skateboarding? Well, it’s not the success of landing a trick but the journey. How many times have you looked a set of stairs and wonder if you could do a 360 off them. Honestly, it makes people think that we are crazy. However, the beauty of skateboarding comes from the rider and not the board. Skate On!
