Our April issue this year is full of love. Ferideh Feili shared her favorite blue parrot painting with us for our cover, a work of art she completed over 10 years ago. Love for community is evident in our story about Millan’s Boat. A group of Rincón’s residents came together and volunteered their time to reconstruct one of Rincon’s historic monuments. Through love, David, Omayra and their children built their business Harbor Restaurant and work together every day. Another successful community effort came together with the 1st annual Rincón for SUDS fundraiser; you can read more about this on page 41. Finally, it’s no secret that everyone loves the annual Rincón International Film Festival. Read more about the festival on page 31. Enjoy!
Nuestra edición de abril de este año está llena de amor. Ferideh Feili compartió con nosotros su pintura favorita con una cotorra azul, un trabajo artístico que culmino hace 10 años y el cual se presenta en nuestra portada. El amor hacia la comunidad es evidente en nuestra historia sobre El Bote Millán. Un grupo de los residentes de Rincón, se unieron y ofrecieron su tiempo voluntariamente para reconstruir uno de los monumentos históricos de Rincón. A través del amor David, Omayra y sus hijos han construido su negocio Harbor Restaurant y trabajan diariamente en equipo. Otro exitoso esfuerzo comunitario ocurrió en la Primera Actividad Anual de Recaudación de Fondos para SUDS en Rincón, pueden leer más sobre este evento en la página 41. Cover Artist Artista de la Portada
Farideh Feili has been an artist since she was a young child living in Iran. In Iran, her father was a well-known calligrapher whose artistry was widely sought after, and it is from him that she inherited her talent. Farideh left Iran in 1975 to work as a flight attendant for Iran Air and eventually migrated to New York City. She came to Puerto Rico 25 years ago with a friend whose family was from Rincón, and she immediately loved the peace and quiet of Rincón after having lived the life style of an urban high roller. She then decided to stay in order to paint and surf. Farideh Feili ha sido una artista desde que era una jovencita viviendo en Irán. En Irán, su padre era un reconocido calígrafo cuyo trabajo artístico era ampliamente solicitado, y es de él de quien ella heredo su talento. Farideh dejo Irán en 1975 para trabajar como aeromoza de la aerolínea Irán Air y eventualmente emigro a la ciudad de Nueva York. Ella llegó a Puerto Rico hace 25 años atrás con una amiga cuya familia era de Rincón e inmediatamente se enamoró de la paz y la quietud de Rincón, esto después de haber vivido el estilo de vida acelerado de la ciudad de Nueva York. Ella decidió quedarse para así disfrutar del surfing y poder pintar. El Bote de Millán Millan’s Boat Millán’s Boat is a historic landmark of great importance to the residents of Rincón. The boat was in very poor conditions until various volunteers decided to reconstruct it. It is considered a historic monument and people from all over the island come to visit. Millán’s Boat is an important reference spot for fishermen and also indicates that the discovery of Puerto Rico happened on our coasts. It was originally built by Mr. Emiliano Millán Altiery, who was born on September 29, 1918 and passed away March 7, 1994. Don Emiliano procreated 5 children, and he was the founder of the Villa Pesquera and the chapel located in the Barrero area. Since he was 9 years old, he lived in the Barrero area of Rincón, and since very early in his life dedicated himself to fishing. When he was approximately 18 years old, he started building a boat made out of wood and palm fronds on the top of a rock with its bow pointing towards Desecheo Island. After the wood and the palm fronds had deteriorated, he built the boat out of concrete. With time the boat got completely deteriorated, this happened to a great extent because of the inclemencies of the weather. A few months ago, a resident of Rincón decided that he would reconstruct it Page 12
El Bote de Millán, es un punto histórico de suma importancia para los residentes del pueblo de Rincón. El mismo se encontraba en muy pobres condiciones hasta que varios residentes lo reconstruyeron. Este se considera un monumento histórico y es visitado por personas de todo Puerto Rico. El Bote de Millán es un punto de referencia importante para los pescadores, además, indica que el descubrimiento de Puerto Rico fue por nuestras costas. Fue construido por el señor Emiliano Millán Altiery, quien nació el 29 de septiembre de 1918 y falleció el 7 de marzo de 1994. Don Emiliano procreó 5 hijos, fue fundador de la Villa Pesquera y de la capilla de Barrero, de los cuales estamos muy orgullosos. Desde los 9 años vivió en el barrio Barrero de Rincón y desde una muy temprana edad se dedicó a la pesca. Cuando este tenía aproximadamente 18 años comenzó a construir en la cima de una roca un bote en madera y ramas de palma con la proa dirigida hacia el Desecheo. Luego que la madera y las ramas se deterioraron este lo construyo en cemento. Con el tiempo el bote se deterioró completamente, esto

After that, they covered the floor with beautiful tiles. They collaborated with the residents of Bo. Barrero, residents like Mr. Micky and the two sons of Don Emiliano, Luis and Millito. Tons of people reached out to them in gratitude, and some even sang them songs and recited them poetry, just like the three sisters Yiya, Carmen, and Paquita did. After the concrete job was finished, a beautiful painting of the Puerto Rican flag was made by an artist from Rincón. According to the workers, “the greatest satisfaction we received was all those who came from Bo. Barrero to give us thanks and bless us for our work. We can’t leave everything in the hands of the government; anyone that can, should take an active role in its community.” We wish that Rincón would have the luck of counting on more people like these workers, who created consciousness and were determined to preserve and not let this important monument disappear.

Luego le colocaron unas hermosas losetas. Ellos colaboraron con los residentes del Bo. Barrero como el Señor Micky y los dos hijos de Don Emiliano, Luis y Millito. Muchas personas llegaron para darle las gracias y hasta les cantaron y recitaron poesía como lo hicieron las tres hermanas Yiya, Carmen y Paquita. Después de que el trabajo en cemento se completó, una hermosa pintura de la bandera de Puerto Rico fue hecha por una artista de Rincón. De acuerdo con los trabajadores, “la satisfacción más grande fue todo aquel que llego del Bo. Barrero a darnos las gracias y las bendiciones. No podemos dejar todo en manos del gobierno, todo el que pueda que tome un rol activo en la comunidad.” ¡Hay bote como para 50 años más! Ojalá y Rincón cuente con más personas como estos trabajadores que crearon conciencia y determinaron que este patrimonio no podía desaparecer. ¡En hora buena!

David & Omayra The only thing needed was a dream, the will to work really hard in order to make things happen, and team work to make things go forward. David started from a very young age working in the restaurant business, following very closely in the steps of his father, Don Carlos and his brother, Carlos Jr. In the restaurants where he worked, he occupied all of the positions available, from waiter to kitchen assistance. And every day that will of succeeding was closer to his heart. Omayra, with her jovial charisma and sparkling personality, came from a family of merchants. What she didn’t imagine was that the future was holding for her something very different from what she had chosen as her professional career in the field of biology. Since they had fallen in love, Omayra and David have maintained a very deep bond that has taken them to fulfill everything that they had set their mind to without minding the challenges that life had set in their path. In October 1997, they opened Rincón Tropical, specializing in sea food and fresh fish. While David attended the kitchen, Omayra had already started to gain the love of many of the customers, which still visit them today. The help of Don Carlos had always been very important in their success; in fact, the secret of their beans is still today one of the best kept secrets. In May 2001 and always with a vision of growing, they opened Rincón Tropical 2 in their own building. There they kept harvesting achievements and friendships, and the whole family had started to be part of the work force. Kerwin and Kritzia, their two children, started to get involved in the business procedures. Even though school was always the priority, they also taught them the value of working hard and with honesty in order to achieve what they desired. With simple tasks like folding utensils or peeling potatoes, they started to contribute to the family business and started gaining money for their work. After a few years of complete dedication to the establishment of their business the opportunity of selling their successful business came along; however, it didn’t take them much time to realize that their hearts were telling them to go back to the world of gastronomy. The “retirement” didn’t last for

Sólo se necesitaba un sueño, muchas ganas de trabajar duro para lograrlo y un trabajo en familia para echar hacia delante. David comenzó desde muy joven en el negocio de los restaurantes, siguiendo muy de cerca los pasos de su papá, Don Carlos y su hermano, Carlos Jr. En los restaurantes en los cuales trabajó, ocupó todas las posiciones, desde mesero hasta asistente de cocina. Y cada día ese deseo de superación lo llevaba más cerca del corazón. Omayra por su parte, con su carisma jovial y personalidad chispeante venia de una familia de comerciantes. Lo que no imaginaba era que el futuro le depararía algo muy diferente a lo que había escogido como carrera profesional en el área de la biología. Desde que se enamoraron, Omayra y David han mantenido un vínculo muy profundo que los ha llevado a juntos lograr todo lo que se han propuesto sin importar los retos que la vida les ha puesto en el camino. En octubre de 1997 abrieron Rincón Tropical con especialidad en mariscos y pescados frescos. Mientras David atendía la cocina, Omayra ya había comenzado a ganarse el cariño de muchos de los comensales, quienes aún hoy día los visitan. La ayuda de Don Carlos siempre fue importante en este éxito, tan es así que el secreto de las habichuelas es todavía uno de los mejores guardados. En mayo 2001 y siempre con una visión de crecimiento, abrieron Rincón Tropical 2 en su propio edificio. Allí siguieron cosechando éxitos y amistades, y ya la familia entera era parte del esfuerzo. Kerwin y Kritzia, sus dos hijos, comenzaron a envolverse en la operación del negocio. A pesar de que los estudios eran prioridad, también le enseñaron el valor de trabajar con esfuerzo y honestidad para lograr lo que deseaban. Con tareas básicas como envolver utensilios o pelar papas, comenzaron a aportar al negocio de la familia y también a ganarse su dinero. Luego de varios años de completa dedicación al establecimiento de su negocio se les presentó la oportunidad de vender su exitoso negocio, sin embargo, no les tomó mucho tiempo en darse cuenta que la vena les exigía volver al mundo de la gastronomía. El “retiro” no les duró mucho,

Kerwin and Kritzia have followed the steps of their parents David and Omayra, and they are integral parts of the business. Kritzia works in the public service and assists in the administrative area while Kerwin has been prominent in the kitchen area.
Ya Kerwin y Kritzia han seguido los pasos de sus padres David y Omayra y son parte integral del negocio. Kritzia trabaja en el servicio al público y asistiendo en áreas administrativas y Kerwin se ha destacado en la cocina.
For a long time, the perfect combination has worked marvelously. Not only new customers visit them daily, but those who came as children with their parents, visit them today with their own families. In the Harbor Restaurant, not only do you find exquisite food, but you also find a special place full of history and good moments, a place where you can recharge energies, liberate yourself from stress and have a spectacular time with Omayra and David.

8th Annual Rincón International Film Festival
Buenos Dias Film Lovers. The Rincón International Film Festival is proud to presentits 8th annual event in beautiful Rincón, Puerto Rico, from April 13th to 19th, 2015.The festival has garnered worldwide publicity by being honored by the prestigious entertainment publication for filmmakers, MovieMaker Magazine. MovieMaker Magazine has selected the Rincón International Film Festival as one of the “Top 25 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee.” This honorable recognition has put Rincón, RIFF, as well as Puerto Rico, in the entertainment industry spotlight. RIFF is pleased to announce its 2015 schedule. The films have been chosen from over 1100 submissions from around the world. The final lineup includes over 120 films from around the world, 87 Puerto Rican Films and 55 World Premieres. Filmmakers from Canada, Spain, Los Angeles, Puerto Rico, New York and afar have already begun making their travel arrangements. More than half of the films will have filmmakers represented at their screenings. Highlights from this year’s event include the following: OPENING FILM – Lazy Parrot – Action/Adventure Night – Monday April 13th – 6pm. “BATKID BEGINS” “This amazing documentary film will make you laugh, cry and sit on the edge of your seats in anticipation.” - Doug Lantz, RIFF Director. “Batkid Begins” follows a 5 year old boy with Leukemia whose Make-AWish request was to be Batman for a day. Watch as the whole city of San Francisco comes together to create Gotham City a reality for this child. This film was purchased by New Line Cinema and is planned for release in theaters this summer. See it here in Rincón first. “Rincón Night” on Wednesday, April 15th, 6pm at Shipwreck Bar and Grill will showcase the romantic drama film, “Riding 79” which was shot entirely in Rincon, Puerto Rico. Other great highlighted nights which are always SOLD OUT include Comedy Night at Villa Cofresi on Thursday, April 16th at 6pm and Best of Puerto Rico short films on Saturday, April 18th at La Copa Llena at 6pm. If you do nothing else during this festival, at least come for the closing night of BEST OF THE FESTIVAL NIGHT - short films, where the audience decides what films will be shown. This event will be hosted at Tres Palmas Inn and Villas on Sunday, April 19th at 6pm.

With change comes opportunity. In 2005, I moved from Rincón to Washington, DC. I found myself at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in our nation’s capital for the 1st time. Both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were raging, and I saw some pretty heavy stuff that day. At that moment I knew I wanted to do something, but I didn’t think I had anything to offer. I had a liberal arts degree from Colorado and worked in the diving & mountaineering industry…It didn’t seem like a good fit at the time but something kept eating at me so I went to the American Red Cross office at Walter Reed and said I wanted to volunteer. That decision changed my life…with that change and my move to D.C. came my opportunity and the SUDS program was born 8 years ago. Change and opportunity can take many forms. For our service members, it can be life altering. These young warriors have had tremendous change; it has been hard, difficult and challenging but they haven’t let their injuries define them. With their change also came opportunity. Today there are more adaptive sports programs out there than any other time in our nation’s history. These young warriors are snow skiing, sailing, sky diving, boxing and yes…even scuba diving. I’m so pleased that this event came to fruition. I have been bringing warriors to Rincon for about 7 years now and it’s awesome that this community has come out to support our nation’s heroes and this program. I often tell people that I have the greatest job in the world. Sometimes I wonder if I’m getting more out of it than our warriors are. It’s great to be in a position of giving and hopefully making a difference in our veterans’ lives. We have over 50,000 injured service members from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I hope the people Page 40
Con cambios vienen oportunidades. En el 2005 me mudé de Rincón a Washington, DC. Visité por primera vez en el Centro Médico Walter Reed Army en la capital de nuestra nación. Las guerras en Irak y Afganistán estaban en pleno apogeo y ese día vi unas situaciones bien fuertes. En ese momento supe que quería hacer algo pero pensé que no tenía nada que ofrecer. Tenía un grado en Artes de Colorado y trabajé en las industrias de buceo y alpinismo … No parecía relevante en ese momento pero no podía dejar de pensar en cómo podía ayudar. Decidí ir a la oficina de la Cruz Roja en Walter Reed y ofrecer mi ayuda como voluntario. Esa decisión cambió mi vida… con ese cambio y haberme mudado a D.C. vino la oportunidad y nació SUDS hace 8 años atrás. Cambios y oportunidades pueden tomar muchas formas. Para nuestros militares puede cambiar sus vidas. Estos jóvenes han tenido tremendos cambios, ha sido difícil, fuerte y retador pero no han permitido que sus heridas los definan. Con sus cambios también vinieron oportunidades. Hoy en día hay más programas de deportes adaptivos que en cualquier otro momento en la historia de nuestra nación. Estos jóvenes están esquiando, velereando, haciendo paracaidismo, boxeando y, sí… hasta buceando. Me complació mucho que este evento se llevara a cabo. He estado trayendo veteranos a Rincón cerca de 7 años y es magnífico que esta comunidad esté apoyando nuestros héroes y a este programa. Digo con frecuencia que tengo el mejor trabajo del mundo. A veces me pregunto si le saco más provecho que nuestros veteranos… Es grandioso estar en la posición de dar y hacer una diferencia en la vida de estos veteranos. Tenemos más de 50,000 militares que han sufrido heridas en las guerras de Irak y Afganistán, espero que las personas en esta comunidad se hagan la pregunta… ¿Qué tengo para ofrecer? Why is the new Econo Supermarket different? ¿Por qué el nuevo Supermercado Econo de Rincón es uno diferente? Written & Translated by Cristina Nieves
In a world like the one we inhabit these days, where our natural resources are depleted every day more and more, it’s of great importance that we individually and collectively work together for its preservation. Acknowledging the worldwide necessity for conservation, the new branch of Econo Supermarket in Rincón has decided to join the modality of green buildings. Nevertheless, before detailing how they have done it, first we need to define what a green building is. According to the U.S. Green Building Council, a green building is a construction whose impact to the environment and the community that surrounds it is the least; also, it provides an optimal interior atmosphere for the pleasure of its occupants. Then, how is the new branch of the Econo Supermarket in Rincón an example to our community in terms of constructing green buildings? There are many factors that make this new branch an example of what should be a green building. Let’s start by pointing out that the new Econo of Rincón is the first supermarket in Puerto Rico with sustainable, ecofriendly and high efficiency elements. Also, it has a sensor system that ensures the use of energy only and exclusively when it’s necessary, avoiding the unnecessary consumption of electricity by leaving the lights on for extended periods of time. Equally important, 41 skylights have been installed to function as direct reflectors, lighting the sales areas and the stock room during the day. All of the store illumination system will be LED (light emitting diode). The consumption of electricity by lamps that use LED illumination is lower in comparison with the use of fluorescent lamps. This is to a great extent because the life duration of a LED light is approximately 10 years. It’s not only the aspect of reducing their electricity consumption where this new branch surprises us. In the supermarket, they have installed different elements in the urinals, the bathrooms and the sinks ensuring the reduction in water consumption. Also, all of the paint that Page 48
En un mundo como en el que vivimos actualmente, en el cual nuestros recursos naturales se ven cada vez más amenazados, es de suma importancia que individualmente y colectivamente trabajemos para preservarlos. Tomando en cuenta esta necesidad mundial de conservación, la nueva sucursal del Supermercado Econo en Rincón, ha decidido unirse a la modalidad de los edificios verdes. Sin embargo, antes de detallar como lo están haciendo, primero debemos definir que es un edificio verde. De acuerdo con el Consejo de Construcción Ecológica de Estados Unidos, un edificio verde es aquel cuyo impacto al medio ambiente y a la comunidad que los rodea es mínimo, además, de que proporciona un óptimo ambiente interior para el beneficio de sus ocupantes. Entonces, ¿cómo es que la nueva sucursal del Supermercado Econo en Rincón es un ejemplo para nuestra comunidad rincoeña de edificaciones verdes? Son muchos los factores que lo hacen ser un ejemplo de lo que debe ser o a lo que se deben acercarse las edificaciones verdes. Comencemos por señalar que el nuevo Econo de Rincón, es el primer supermercado en Puerto Rico con elementos sostenibles, eco amigables y de alta eficiencia. Además, cuenta con un sistema de sensores que garantiza la utilización de energía por concepto de iluminación única y exclusivamente cuando sea necesario, evitando así que las luces permanezcan encendidas por largos periodos de tiempo sin necesidad. De igual importancia, se han instalado 41 tragaluces los cuales actuaran como reflectores directos iluminando las áreas de venta y los almacenes durante el día. Toda la iluminación de la tienda será LED (acrónimo para diodo electroluminiscente). El consumo de las lámparas que utilizan iluminación LED es mínimo cuando se compara con las lámparas fluorescentes, esto en gran medida porque las luces LED tienen una vida útil de aproximadamente 10 años. No es solamente en el aspecto de la reducción en el consumo eléctrico donde esta nueva sucursal nos sorprende. The new Econo Supermarket, which is located on the road 115, right in front of the Perez Santoni Funeral Home, and which comes with a big parking lot, surprises us and teaches us that even the smallest changes make great differences. The conservation of our resources is indispensable, and Econo Supermarkets has decided to place their bit of effort by making their new establishment one that shows their love for our Planet Earth. We are anxiously awaiting the opening, and we wish them great success.
La nueva sucursal del Supermercado Econo en Rincón, la cual está localizada en la Carr. 115 justo al frente de la Funeraria Pérez Santoni y la cual cuenta con un inmenso estacionamiento, nos sorprende y nos enseña que hasta los cambios más pequeños hacen una gran diferencia. La conservación de nuestros recursos es indispensable y Supermercados Econo en Rincón ha decidido colocar su granito de arena para hacer de su nuevo establecimiento uno que muestre su amor por el Planeta Tierra. Perfect Mojito Recipe (two servings) Receta para el Mojito perfecto (dos servicios) 10-15 fresh mint leaves
10-15 hojas de menta fresca
One lime sliced in four pieces
Una lima picada en cuatro pedazos
2 tablespoons of white sugar, or to taste
2 cucharadas de azúcar blanca o al gusto
Two “shots” of white rum
Dos “shots” de ron blanco
½ cup club soda or lemon soda Plenty of ice Place mint leaves and lime wedges into a large sturdy glass Use a muddler to crush the mint and lime to release the mint oils and lime juice Add the sugar Fill the glass with ice Pour in the rum and soda Mix or shake well, do not strain mint and lime Enjoy!

Lemon freeze Recipe Receta de congelado de limón Cold and refreshing with the perfect balance between sweet and sour 3/4 cup corn flake crumbs 2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 cup melted butter 3 eggs, separated 1 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk 1/3 cup lemon juice 3 tablespoons sugar 1. Combine corn flake crumbs, 2 tablespoons sugar, and melted butter in a 8 inch pie pan: mix well 2.
Remove 1-2 tablespoons of mixture for topping
3. Press remaining mixture of crumbs evenly to form the crust 4.
Beat egg yolks until thick
5.
Combine with condensed milk

Add lemon juice and lemon peel, stir until thick

In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff

Gradually add 3 tablespoons of sugar to egg whites
9.
Fold gently into the lemon mixture
10. Pour into pie pan and sprinkle with reserved crumbs 11.
Freeze until firm
