Cover artist Alexandra (“Sandy”) Muñiz Acevedo is a multi-talented Rincoeña. She is the new layout designer for El Coquí of Rincón. She graduated from Sacred Heart University in San Juan with a BA in advertising and graphic design. She makes ads for the beautiful publication Viva Mayagüez as well as for El Coquí. She and her husband Luis (“Güillo”) Cruz Martes perform with Bomba Urbana. Güillo is also an artist. The photograph of the Plaza and many of the photos you will see in El Coqui were taken by Sandy and Güillo. J
uan Carlos Medina designed the centerfold map that he named “The Plaza – The Heart of Rincón.” The tradition of the Plaza as the town’s heart goes back to the island’s Spanish ancestry. The town was built from the Plaza out with the Plaza considered “town” and the countryside “el campo”. Even as late as the 1980’s when the post-office was located in the Plaza, this was where neighbors gathered, sat under the trees or went to do their shopping. In the 90’s the Plaza needed renovation. The oldest trees were sick, the Band Shell, though maintained, looked shabby. The post office had moved. The Alcadía was too small to include all the agencies then spread around the plaza. Except for the bakeries and pizza shops, the heart of the town was no longer a place to shop. When the renovation began, it was an extensive plan which included the construction of a spacious new Alcadía that would house all agencies under one roof, and the complete renovation of the Plaza with new landscaping, new electric, plumbing, and sewer lines. This massive plan was the brainchild of our present mayor, Hon. Carlos López Bonilla. He bore the complaints about the construction and delays, holding to the idea that when the downtown area project was completed, the Plaza would once again become “Rincón’s Heart.” And there are definite signs that it is happening, however, progress in that direction is not without challenges, some beyond anyone’s control such as the explosion of minimalls and the continued parking problem for the Plaza area. The major parking lot is small and too far for many people to walk in the heat of the day. With all the agencies under one roof, there are now empty buildings making the Plaza look commercially abandoned. But the people of Rincón have embraced the Plaza. I see a re-birth of the tradition of it as the center of the community. The Sunday Farmer’s Market is a weekly party where neighbors greet each other after church, take a free yoga class, a cup of hot chocolate, a cool herbal tea, buy Page 6

La tradición de la plaza como el corazón del pueblo se remonta a la herencia española de la isla. El pueblo se construyó tomando a la plaza como centro considerando al área de la plaza como “el pueblo” y al área fuera de ella como “el campo”. Aún a fines de los 80 cuando el correo aún estaba ubicado en la plaza, este era el lugar donde los vecinos se reunían, se sentaban bajo los árboles, o iban de compras. En los años 90 la plaza necesitaba ser renovada. Sus árboles mas antiguos estaban enfermos, la concha acústica, aunque recibía mantenimiento, lucía deteriorada. El correo se había mudado. La casa alcaldía era muy pequeña para albergar todas las agencias que se encontraban esparcidas en el área de la plaza. Con excepción de las panaderías y pizzerías, el corazón del pueblo ya no era un lugar donde se podía comprar. Cuando la renovación comenzó, este era un plan extenso que incluía la construcción de una nueva y espaciosa casa alcaldía que albergaría bajo un mismo techo a todas las agencias, y la renovación completa de la plaza con nuevos jardines, y nuevas líneas eléctricas, de plomería y alcantarillado. Este plan masivo fue la creación de nuestro alcalde incumbente, el Hon. Carlos López Bonilla. El soportó las quejas sobre la construcción y los retrasos, aferrado a la idea de que cuando el proyecto de renovación del Casco Urbano se hubiese completado, la plaza sería una vez mas “El Corazón de Rincón”. Y hay señales definitivas de que esto está ocurriendo, sin embargo, el avance

The Plaza is the site for community events like the recent Three Kings Day celebration sponsored by the Leaders of Rincón with traditional food and music for all. Businesses like the new art gallery Tres Puertas have joined the popular Pancho Villa Mexican Restaurant and Das Alpen Café. When Saludos & Café opened with its outdoor tables, good coffee and light food, it was another sign that the Plaza tradition would not only survive, but that at least in Rincón, its citizens are going to do everything they could to make it thrive. To use the existing Rincón Trolley as a regular means of transportation, with a scheduled route, that would begin in the Parking Lot go around the entire downtown and Plaza area on a continuous basis from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., it could perhaps take a twice a day trip to the Post Office. 2. More signage for parking and for side streets. I look forward to hearing from you......and to seeing you around La Plaza de Rincón.

La ploriferación de pequeños centros comerciales con estacionamiento, el problema constante de estacionamiento en el área de la plaza, ya que el estacionamiento principal es muy pequeño y lejano para que algunas personas puedan caminar durante el día bajo el calor. Y con todas las agencias bajo un mismo techo, aún hay edificios vacíos que hacen lucir a la plaza comercialmente desierta. Pero los rincoeños han acogido a su plaza. Puedo apreciar el renacimiento de ella como el centro de la comunidad. El mercado agroecológico dominical es una fiesta semanal con los vecinos saludándose unos a los otros después de la iglesia, yoga gratis, una taza de chocolate caliente, o un refrescante té de hierbas, hermosas frutas y vegetales cultivados localmente, artesanos, pan, y más. De lunes a viernes, el municipio auspicia una clase de ejercicios mañaneros. La plaza es la sede de eventos comunitarios como la reciente celebración del Día de Reyes auspiciada por la Alianza de Líderes Rincoeños con música y comida tradicional para todos. Negocios tales como la nueva galería de arte Tres Puertas que se ha unido al popular restaurante mexicano Pancho Villa y al Das Alpen Caf'é. Cuando Saludos & Café abrió sus puertas con sus mesas al aire libre, su buen café y comida liviana, esa fue otra señal de que la tradición de la plaza no solamente sobrevivirá, pero, al menos en Rincón, sus ciudadanos harán todo lo posible para que prospere. Muchas personas han hecho sugerencias para ayudar a lograr este sueño. Churches of the Plaza Las iglesias de la plaza by Sandra Nía Rodríguez

Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church The information for this article was taken from the book Rincón su historia y su gente (Rincón: Its History and its People) by Mr. Jaime Sánchez Rivera and documents from the archives of Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church. In 1777 Don Pablo de Arroyo received official permission to found the town of Rincón under the condition that its residents would build a church and would maintain it and the priests with “cleanliness and decorum.” Don Miguel Rodríguez Feliciano was assigned from the Aguada Vicariate to determine the site for the church including the atrium, place a cross, and the first stone for the structure. But according to Father Jaime Oliver Márquez, former parish priest, there was not a permanent church until the 18th century. The priest suggests that one of the first structures might have been a building with a straw rooftop and stone-work walls. On July 17, 1789 a permanent church was built with Santa Rosa de Lima and San Antonio Abad as patron saints. There is no record as to how the church ended up with one patron saint even though it was originally assigned two. In 1824, the church was damaged by Hurricane Monserrate. By 1877 the church had been repaired, and built in stone-work with the roof made out of clay tiles. In 1918, after being damaged by earthquakes, it was once again reconstructed. During these years of reconstruction (1918-1920), the mass was held on the Plaza. The rooftop was still made out of clay tiles, and the main altar was placed under a vault that from the outside looked like a cupola. The church was surrounded by a patio that disappeared during the construction of 1967-1971 which gave the church its appearance today. Page 16
La información para este artículo fue tomada del libro Rincón su historia y su gente del Sr. Jaime Sánchez Rivera y de documentos de la Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima de Rincón. En el año 1777 se le otorgó licencia a Don Pablo de Arroyo para la fundación del pueblo de Rincón con la condición de que erigiera un lugar para la iglesia y los vecinos se comprometieran en mantener “con aseo y decoro” dicho lugar junto al sacerdocio. De la vicaría de Aguada se envió a Don Miguel Rodríguez Feliciano para que determinara el sitio donde se debía hacer la construcción de la iglesia incluyendo el atrio, pusiera una cruz y la primera piedra para el lugar. Pero según el Padre Jaime Oliver Márquez, antiguo párroco, no hubo iglesia permanente hasta el siglo 18. Sugiere el párroco que una de las primeras edificaciones debió haber sido una estructura techada de yaguas con paredes de mampostería. En el 17 de julio de 1789 la iglesia es erigida de forma permanente bajo la advocación de Santa Rosa de Lima y San Antonio Abad. No se tiene conocimiento de cómo la iglesia llegó a quedarse con un solo patrón habiéndose establecido con dos. En 1824 la iglesia fue afectada por el huracán Monserrate. Ya para el 1877 la iglesia había sido reparada y hecha en mampostería con tejas de barro en el techo. En 1918, luego de ser averiada por temblores ésta fue reconstruida. Durante los años de reconstrucción (19181920), la misa se llevaba a cabo en la plaza pública. Su techo era aún de tejas y el altar mayor estaba localizado bajo una bóveda que podía verse en la parte posterior como una cúpula. La iglesia poseía un patio a su alrededor el cual desapareció con la construcción de 1967-1971 la cual le dio a la iglesia su fachada actual.
Según el libro Rincón su historia y su gente del Sr. Jaime Sánchez Rivera, y documentos de la Iglesia Presbiteriana de Rincón, a comienzos del Siglo XX, el Sr. Bruno Rodríguez, de oficio col portor (vendedor de Biblias) llegó a caballo al Barrio Calvache de Rincón y sembró el evangelio entre los cortadores de caña. En el año 1906 Don Carlos Arroyo fue la primera persona en ofrecer un cuarto de su casa para las reuniones del pequeño grupo de estudio de la Biblia del cual se desarrolló una congregación evangélica.

Presbyterian Church of Rincón According to the book Rincón su historia y su genete (Rincón: Its History and Its People) by Mr. Jaime Sánchez Rivers and archival documents from the Presbyterian Church of Rincón, at the beginning of the 20th Century, Bruno Rodríguez, a bible salesman, arrived by horse to Barrio Calvache in Rincón and started preaching to the sugar cane cutters.
En el 29 de marzo del mismo año se organizan como iglesia bajo el pastoreo de Johnson Underwood y Arnold Smith. La congregación fue creciendo y el templo comienza a construirse bajo la supervisión del Sr. Jacinto Perocier. Esta iglesia de bloques medía 30’ x 20’ de ancho y 12’ de alto, culminando el proyecto en 1912. La iglesia fue conocida como la “cajita de fósforos”. En 1937 se inicia una campaña para la construcción de un nuevo templo. En 1953 se decide establecer legalmente el título de propiedad del solar de la iglesia. El edificio se demolió el 4 de abril de 1955 y el nuevo templo se inaugura mas tarde en ese año.
In 1906 Don Carlos Arroyo offered a room in his home for a small bible study group. This group later evolved into an evangelical congregation. On March 29, 1906 they became formally organized as a church with Johnson Underwood and Arnold Smith as pastors. The congregation continued to grow and soon they began construction of a church under the direction of Jacinto Perocier. The original church was made out of blocks. Its dimensions were 30’ X 20’wide and 12’high. It was known as la “cajita de fósforos” (the matchbox). In 1937 the congregation launched a building campaign for a new church. They obtained the legal deed for the land in 1953. The old building was demolished on April 4, 1955 and the new house of worship was inaugurated later that same year.

Interview with Isolina Tirado ....Isolina Tirado Morales, is a rincoeña who, at the age of 84, holds vivid memories of her life in Rincón and sweet reminiscences of its Plaza. She was originally from the Barrio Puntas. In her youth a trip to town consisted on a long journey by foot through sugar cane fields and bushes. “I used to live between the Barrio Puntas and Barrio Ensenada and after walking for a long time, we would arrive to town which began at the site of the present post office.” Isolina’s Plaza had beautiful trees and marble benches with the names of its benefactors carved on them. “In front of the church there was a beautiful and luxuriant tree, a kiosk that sold piraguas, and there was a fence to tie up the horses. Nearby there was the Cafetín Acevedo that sold alcoholic beverages. On Sunday, the peddlers sold their merchandise in front of the church and in front of the houses nearby. They sold cakes, candy, roast pork, piraguas and straw hats and purses.” The Plaza was also the site for the Patron Saint’s Festivities with games such as the “El Palo Encebao” (people compete by trying to climb a greased pole and grabbing an object hung at the top) and sack races, photography booths, and was also the starting point for theGood Friday processions. But more than anything, the Plaza was the gathering place after the Sunday mass. “People walked by foot, there were very few cars, the young ladies enjoyed walking around the Plaza, the young men enjoyed watching them, and the adults enjoyed a good conversation.” Isolina moved to the United States and returned to Rincón after a long absence. She tells us that upon her return she noticed many changes in the Plaza like the renovation of the Catholic Church, the absence of her luxuriant and beautiful tree, electricity, and the proliferation of traffic. But even with all the changes she has witnessed throughout the years, Isolina has the same deep love for her town and great pride for its beautiful Plaza. Page 18
Isolina Tirado Morales, es una dama rincoeña quién a sus 84 años de edad mantiene vívidos recuerdos de su vida en Rincón y dulces memorias de su plaza de recreo. Siendo natural del Barrio Puntas, para Isolina, en su juventud, un viaje al pueblo consistía en un recorrido a pie desde el Barrio Puntas por caminos de cañaverales y maleza. “Yo vivía entre los Barrios Puntas y Ensenada y luego de caminar por un largo rato salíamos al pueblo por un camino cerca del actual correo del pueblo”. Para Isolina la plaza de sus recuerdos tenía hermosos árboles y bancos de mármol, con los nombres de sus benefactores tallados en ellos. “Frente a la iglesia había un hermoso y frondoso árbol, un kiosko de piraguas y había una verja donde atar a los caballos. También existía un negocio cercano que era el Cafetín Acevedo. Los domingos los vendedores exhibían su mercancía frente a la iglesia y frente a las casas aledañas a la plaza. Vendían bizcochos, dulces, lechón y piraguas, hasta sombreros y carteras de paja”. La plaza también era la sede de las fiestas patronales con “El Palo Encebao”, carreras de sacos y casetas de fotografía, y donde comenzaban las procesiones de viernes santo. Pero mas que nada la plaza era el centro de reunión después de la misa dominical. “La gente caminaba a pie y había muy pocos carros, las jóvenes disfrutaban dando la vuelta a la plaza, los jóvenes disfrutaban viéndolas pasar, y los mayores de una buena conversación”. Isolina se ausenta de Rincón al mudarse a los Estados Unidos. Nos cuenta que a su regreso presenció muchos cambios en la plaza tales como la renovación de la iglesia católica, la ausencia de su árbol frondoso, la existencia de alumbrado público y la proliferación del tráfico urbano. Pero aún con todos los cambios que Isolina ha presenciado, aún mantiene un profundo amor por su pueblo y un gran orgullo por su hermosa plaza de recreo.

Opening Galería de Enid On January 7th Calle Cambija was the scene of a party to celebrate the opening of a gallery of fine art. Enid Miranda is an artist who uses many different mediums from watercolor to stained glass. Her gallery is a combination of fine arts and local crafts. Enid plans to have the crafts artists change often so there will always be something new to see and buy. The gallery features the work by many of Puerto Rico’s favorite artists.

El 7 de enero la Calle Cambija se convirtió en el escenario de una fiesta en celebración de la apertura de una galería de bellas artes. Enid Miranda es también una artista que trabaja su arte en diferentes medios que van desde la acuarela a los vitrales. Ella decidió inaugurar un establecimiento que combinara una galería de bellas artes y artesanía local. Enid planifica alternar regularmente las artesanías en exhibición para que siempre haya algo nuevo que ver y comprar. La galería presenta el trabajo de muchos de los artistas favoritos de Puerto Rico.

Rincón Sailing Wins Award Congratulations to Jeanne and Jeff Sinclair of Rincon Sailing for winning a 2011 Award from National US Sailing Program Symposium (NSPS) in Long Beach, California. Jeanne and Jeff won the outstanding Community Outreach and Inclusion Award. They were honored for: •Following the US Sailing Small Boat Curriculum since its inception •Youth Summer Sailing Academy (which has grown annually) •Hosting a US Sailing Counselor Course •Offering adult sailing classes throughout the year Rincón Sailing has its home at Club Náutico in the Marina and has begun to put Rincón on the “map” as a sailing town with terrific young (and older) sailors.

Jeanne y Jeff ganaron el premio de Acercamiento Comunitario e Inclusión Sobresaliente. Recibieron este honor por: •La implementación desde sus comienzos del Currículo de Navegación para Botes Pequeños de los EEUU (US Sailing Small Boat) •La Academia Juvenil de Navegación (la cual ha ido creciendo cada año) •Ofrecer un curso de Consejería de Navegación (US Sailing Counselor Course) •Ofrecer cursos de navegación para adultos durante el año Rincón Sailing tiene sus facilidades en el Club Náutico en la Marina de Rincón y ha comenzado a brindarnos notoriedad como un pueblo de estupendos navegantes tanto jóvenes como mayores.

A
bigail López of Etnica, the women’s clothing and accessories store on Calle Sol, was one of the first interviews I did as the fledgling editor of El Coquí of Rincón. I loved the store and especially loved the fact that Abigail and her husband Juan Carlos Medina were willing to take a chance on opening a store in the Plaza that had been under construction for so many years. It was 2006 and many of the original Plaza stores had closed or were closing and here was Abigail, with her charmingly decorated store, determined to be a part of the renaissance of the Plaza. I was also impressed that Etnica was a family operation. Abigail was supported by her son, Ian Carlos, her daughter Paola, as well as Juan Carlos. One of the first things that Juan Carlos did was to make a map for the Plaza area and begin to do his own marketing and publicity. He wanted to bring people to the Plaza and show them that this was a good place to shop. Since Etnica is at the top of the hill behind the Catholic Church with no parking, he felt that a sign indicating where the public parking was located was essential. He made and placed the only sign that we have that indicates our parking area to visitors. (I think sometimes we forget that not everyone knows Rincón as well as we do.) When I decided that I would like to do an issue devoted to the Plaza and the Downtown area and I wanted to include a map, Juan Carlos Medina was the first person that came to my mind as someone who would help me. To say that the map he created has surpassed my expectations is an understatement! Everyone can see the amount of work and dedication that it took to make the wonderful centerfold map. It is a treasure. Juan Carlos has a full time job for CLARO (Puerto Rico Telephone Co.) but on weekends he, his son and daughter walked the entire Plaza / Downtown area making notes and trying to create an accurate document for us. The plaza merchants and the town are presented this map as a gift from a dedicated Rincón family. Juan Carlos and Abigail encourage you to have fun exploring the area and to help to make Rincón’s Plaza the vital part of the town that it was intended to be. Abigail @ Etnica

bigail López, la propietaria de Étnica, la tienda de ropa y accesorios para damas en la Calle Sol, fue una de las primeras entrevistas que realicé como la editora incipiente de El Coquí of Rincón. Me encantó la tienda y especialmente me agradó que Abigail y su esposo Juan Carlos Medina estaban dispuestos a arriesgarse y abrir una tienda en la plaza cuando la misma había estado en construcción por tantos años. Era el año 2004 y muchos de los comercios del área de la plaza habían cerrado o estaban en camino de hacerlo, y ahí estaba Abigail, con su tienda decorada tan adorablemente, determinada a formar parte del renacimiento de la Plaza. También me impresionó el que Étnica fuera un negocio familiar con el apoyo de su hijo Ian Carlos, su hija Paola, y también de Juan Carlos. Una de las primeras cosas que Juan Carlos hizo fue hacer un mapa del área de la Plaza y comenzar a realizar su propio mercadeo y publicidad para el área. El quería atraer a la gente a la Plaza y mostrarles que este era un sitio bueno para comprar. Como Étnica está ubicada en la cuesta que queda detrás de la Iglesia Católica y no tiene estacionamiento, él consideró que era esencial colocar letreros que indicaran donde se encontraba el estacionamiento público. El hizo y colocó el único letrero que les indica a los visitantes dónde está el estacionamiento. (Yo pienso que a veces se nos olvida que no todo el mundo conoce al pueblo tan bien como nosotros.) Cuando decidí que quería dedicarle un ejemplar de la revista a la Plaza y al Casco Urbano, y quería incluir un mapa, Juan Carlos Medina fue la primera persona que se me ocurrió que podría ayudarme. ¡Me quedo corta al decir que el mapa que él ha creado ha sobrepasado mis expectativas! Todos pueden apreciar la cantidad de trabajo y dedicación que le tomó hacer este maravilloso mapa que encontramos al centro de la revista. Es un tesoro. Juan Carlos trabaja a tiempo completo en CLARO (Puerto Rico Telephone Co.) pero durante los fines de semana él, su hijo y su hija recorrieron toda el área de la Plaza tomando notas y tratando de crear un documento preciso para nosotros. Los comerciantes de la Plaza y el pueblo entero recibirán este mapa como el regalo de una dedicada familia rincoeña. Juan Carlos y Abigail les invitan a que se diviertan explorando el área y que ayuden a convertir a La Plaza de Rincón en la parte vital del pueblo que ha estado destinada a ser.

The Faces of Amigos de 3 Palmas II Las caras de los Amigos de 3 Palmas II By Steve Tamar / Translated by Sandra Nía Rodríguez
O
rganizing and setting up a nonprofit group involves a fair amount of paperwork, and Amigos de Tres Palmas is going through this process now, under the skillful guidance of Berliz Morales Muñoz. She brings with her an unusual qualification - a Bachelors Degree in History! Since her thesis involved studying the effects of the depression of the 1930s on Puerto Rico, this in fact, may be a more valid academic specialization than expected... In any case, her internship will involve organizing the administrative details for the new group, for which she is equally qualified. Berliz is a resident of Aguada where she attended public schools. She received her BA degree in 2008 from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (RUM); then spent a year in the Environmental Program at the Graduate School of Planning at the Río Piedras Campus. She then studied at the Universidad de Costa Rica in San José, receiving a Master’s Degree in Tropical Integrated Coastal Zone Management. Since returning to PR in 2010 she has worked as Coordinator for the Aquatic Safety Project for Sea Grant at RUM. This program focuses mainly on recreational swimming issues, safety equipment, and education and awareness in order to prevent drowning, so she is already familiar with some of the potential recreational user challenges facing the RMTP. Her internship will last from 6 months to a year, depending on a few factors. When I asked her about her plans after this internship, she replied that she would like to broaden her experience by continuing studying coastal management practices in Puerto Rico and other countries. Eventually, of course, she hopes for a career in the coastal management field, but in some sort of interdisciplinary role-she enjoys doing fieldwork, meeting people and writing as well as the administrative work. Since the RMTP still is the only co-managed Marine Protected Area on the mainland of PR, this internship should provide her a lot of practical experience in this regard! In her very few free hours Berliz relaxes by running or going mountain biking, but she says it doesn’t look like she will have much of a chance to do either for the next few months. It can only be hoped she’ll at least get to do some swimming!

Ella trae consigo unas cualificaciones muy inusuales - ¡Un Bachillerato en Historia! Como su tesis fue sobre los efectos de la depresión de los años 30 en Puerto Rico, ésta, de hecho, probablemente será una especialización académica más válida de lo que esperábamos… De cualquier modo, su internado requerirá la organización de los detalles administrativos de la nueva organización, para lo cual ella está igualmente capacitada. Berliz reside en Aguada donde asistió a las escuelas del sistema de educación pública. En el 2008 recibió su Bachillerato de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Mayagüez (RUM); luego pasó un año en el Programa de Estudios del Medio Ambiente en la Escuela Graduada de Planificación en el Recinto de Río Piedras. Luego estudió en la Universidad de Costa Rica en San José donde recibió una Maestría en el Manejo Integrado de las Zonas Costeras Tropicales. Desde su retorno a Puerto Rico en el 2010, Berliz ha trabajado como coordinadora del Aquatic Safety Project for Sea Grant (Proyecto de Seguridad Acuática) en el RUM. El enfoque de este programa es la natación recreativa, equipo de seguridad, y la educación y concienciación pública para prevenir que las personas se ahoguen, así que ella ya está familiarizada con algunos de los retos potenciales que podrá enfrentar la Reserva Marina Tres Palmas. Su internado durará de 6 meses a un año, dependiendo de algunos factores. Cuando le pregunté sobre sus planes después de terminar su internado, ella contestó que le gustaría ampliar su experiencia continuando sus estudios en las prácticas de manejo de las costas en Puerto Rico y otros países. Y eventualmente, ella espera poder obtener un empleo en dicho campo, pero en un rol interdisciplinario ya que ella disfruta del trabajo de campo, conocer personas, escribir, a la vez que el trabajo administrativo. Ya que la reserva es aún la única área marina protegida en la isla de Puerto Rico que es manejada en conjunto, ¡este internado le brindará muchísima experiencia práctica al respecto! En las pocas horas libres de Berliz, ella se relaja corriendo o montando su bicicleta (mountain biking), pero ella dice que no cree que tendrá mucha oportunidad de hacer ninguna de las dos durante los próximos meses. ¡Esperamos que al menos pueda nadar de vez en cuando!

January 28th was a beautiful, sunny and fairly windy day to be at the Balneario, where the Stand-Up Paddleboard Race sponsored by the Puerto Rican Federation of Surfing began at 8 am, with the mayor the Hon Carlos López Bonilla attending. The Tres Palmas Festival began at 2 pm at the Harbor Restaurant/Sunset Village, sponsored by the new non-profit organization Amigos de 3 Palmas, whose mission is to preserve, protect and promote the Reserva Marina. The organizers, Rina Hauptfeld, Rhianna Smith and Berliz Morales, did a fantastic job providing information about the RMTP and inviting a diverse group of participants, such as the new Rincón Surfers Organization, (Organización Comunitaria de Surfing), the new ban-single-use-plastics group and the Rincon Surfrider chapter, to academic and government departments and other groups from this area who deal with coastal environmental issues, with various speakers providing talks and information on these themes. Of course there were local artists & artisans, and excellent live music provided by Fernandito Ferrer and his group, as well as the Los Huérfanos Bandshow - who kept the mellow mood flowing well into the evening. This was an excellent event, both exciting and relaxing at the same time, entertaining as well as educational. It was in fact, a perfect day to be at the beach at the Balneario.

El 28 de enero fue un día soleado y un poco ventoso en el balneario, donde la carrera de Stand-Up Paddleboard auspiciada por la Federación Puertorriqueña de Surfing comenzó a las 8am, contando con la presencia del Hon. Alcalde Carlos López Bonilla. El Festival de Tres Palmas comenzó a las 2pm en el Harbor Restaurant/ Sunset Village, auspiciado por Amigos de 3 Palmas, una nueva organización sin fines de lucro cuya misión es preservar, proteger y promover la Reserva Marina. Las organizadoras, Rina Hauptfeld, Rhianna Smith y Berliz Morales, realizaron un trabajo fantástico ofreciendo información sobre la RMTP e invitando a un diverso grupo de participantes –de varios esfuerzos locales tales como la nueva Rincón Surfers Organization, (Organización Comunitaria de Surfing) la nueva organización que lucha por eliminar el uso de plástico (ban-single-use-plastics) y el Capítulo de Rincón de Surfrider, y también grupos académicos, de agencias gubernamentales y otros grupos del área que bregan con asuntos relacionados al medio ambiente de las costas, con varios conferenciantes que ofrecieron charlas e información sobre el tema. Y por supuesto, había artistas locales y artesanos, y excelente música en vivo presentada por Fernandito Ferrer y su grupo, y Los Huérfanos Bandshow – quiénes mantuvieron el ambiente relajado hasta entrada la noche. Este fue un evento excelente, emocionante y relajante y a la misma vez educativo y entretenido. En realidad fue un día perfecto para estar en la playa en el balneario.

New Year’s Eve 2011 Despedida de año 2011
The Home Owner’s Association (HOA) at Punta del Mar decided to have a blowout party for New Year’s Eve for their members and friends. It was an open invitation to join them under the stars at their Clubhouse, eat great food supplied by local chefs, drink at an open bar, dance to the music of everyone’s favorite jazz trio, Trío Experimental, watch the fireworks and generally say goodbye to the old and welcome the new year. Thanks to the Punta del Mar Home Owners Association for a splendid evening.

Era una invitación abierta para que se les unieran bajo las estrellas en su casa club, comieran excelente comida de chefs locales, bebieran en una barra abierta, y bailaran al son del Trío Experimental, el trío de Jazz favorito de todos, mirar los fuegos artificiales, y en general, despedirse del viejo y darle la bienvenida al nuevo año. Tres Puertas Celebrates 1st Anniversary Elke Fontillo held a gala celebration of her first year in business on January 22nd. She sent out a general invitation to the town to join her at the Gallery to have a glass of wine and something to eat as a way of saying thank you for the tremendous support she has had from her family and Rincón residents in accomplishing her dream. The evening felt very “Old San Juan-ish” as the Trío Experimental played soft Jazz in the stairwell of the building and people spilled onto the street to listen and talk. Most of the talk was -“why can’t we have an event like this once a month in the Plaza?” Page 50
Elke Fontillo ofreció una celebración de gala el 22 de enero con motivo de su primer aniversario. Ella envió una invitación general al pueblo para que se le uniera en la galería para tomar una copa de vino y comer unos antojitos como un gesto de agradecimiento por el tremendo apoyo recibido de parte de su familia y los residentes de Rincón en ayudarle a realizar su sueño. La tarde se sintió un tanto “Viejo San Juanesca” mientras el Trío Experimental tocaba suaves melodías de Jazz en las escaleras del edificio y la gente se derramaba hacia la calle para escuchar y conversar. La mayoría de la conversación se centraba en preguntar – “¿Por qué no podemos tener un evento así en la plaza todos los meses?”

Ellen Browning and Todd Walden have returned to Rincón for the Winter Season. Todd’s business is Rincon Surf Video which not only produced a great DVD of surfers at some of our famous surf spots (The Breaks of Rincón 2011), but also has a complete video service for surfers who would like to capture themselves on the waves as a souvenir. (See ad on page 51.) Ellen is often seen at local crafts fairs with her great, old fashioned woven pot holders (the kind you always had in your mother’s kitchen). Ellen sent the Coquí some marvelous local wildlife photos, all seen from her front porch in Puntas.

Musical Therapy with Tito & Fito Terapia musical con Tito & Fito By Steve Tamar / Translated by Sandra Nía Rodríguez
Shakespeare once asked, “What’s in a name?” And the usual answer is often, “not too much.” They tend to be just convenient labels for things. Ah, but sometimes... sometimes the absolutely perfect name does come along! This is the case for the group called Acoustic Music Therapy, a duo composed of Miguel ‘Tito’ Rodríguez on vocals, playing guitar and violin (plus composing the percussion and rhythm tracks) and Rincón’s own Adolfo ‘Fito’ González playing bass guitar. I’m serious! If you are stressed out, the music these guys play will relax you- if you’re depressed it will cheer you up. Or you’re feeling hyper-active it will calm you down. It can also either focus your attention completely or set your mind drifting, or get your toes tapping and, just maybe, get you singing along. I am not exactly sure how they manage to do all of this, but there is obviously some pretty careful attention to repertoire, plus a lot of sheer musical talent. And sometimes, I suspect a bit of (for lack of a better name) magic... In an effort to determine how just two guys and a handful of equipment could accomplish this feat, your intrepid reporter subjected them to a grueling interview between sets at the Calypso. Under intense questioning they eventually broke down and revealed the following facts: They have known each other all their lives! Well, since elementary school anyway, since they both attended the Theodore Roosevelt school in Mayagüez. They both began musical studies early! Fito started by playing classical guitar and Tito the classical violin (Fito showed him his first guitar chords, in fact). By the time they got to junior high they were both playing guitar in a student rock band at the Manuel A. Barreto School. This was of course the era of power chords and heavy metal, and Page 56
Shakespeare una vez preguntó “¿Qué hay en un nombre?” Y la respuesta usual a menudo es “No mucho”. Los nombres tienden a ser etiquetas convenientes para nombrar las cosas. Ah, pero a veces… ¡A veces el nombre perfecto surge! Este es el caso del grupo llamado Acoustic Music Therapy, (Terapia Musical Acústica), el dúo compuesto por Miguel ‘Tito’ Rodríguez en la voz, guitarra y violín (y en la composición de las pistas de percusión y ritmo) y el hijo de Rincón Adolfo ‘Fito’ González en el bajo. ¡Lo digo seriamente! Si se siente tenso, la música de estos individuos lo relajará, si está deprimido, le alegrará, y si se siente hiperactivo le calmará los nervios. También le puede ayudar a enfocar su atención completamente o llevar a su mente en un viaje a la deriva; o a marcar el compás con sus dedos y hasta posiblemente hacerle cantar con ellos. No estoy muy seguro de como logran hacer todo esto, pero obviamente existe una cuidadosa atención al repertorio, mas un caudal de puro talento musical. Y a veces, sospecho, un poco de (por no encontrar otra forma de decirlo) magia… En mi esfuerzo por determinar cómo dos personas con un poco de equipo pueden lograr esta hazaña, este reportero intrépido los hizo objeto de una entrevista exhaustiva entre sus presentaciones en el restaurante Calypso. Luego de un intenso interrogatorio finalmente cedieron y nos revelaron lo siguiente: ¡Ellos se conocen de toda la vida! Bueno, desde la escuela elemental, ya que ambos estudiaron en la escuela Theodore Roosevelt en Mayagüez. Ambos comenzaron su formación musical a edad temprana. Fito comenzó tocando la guitarra clásica y Tito el violín clásico. (Por cierto, Tito le enseñó sus primeros

Tito was more into the metal scene, and admitted he had to go over to a neighbor’s house to listen to groups like Iron Maiden while studying to classical music at home. Fito tended towards the Progressive Rock part of the spectrum, and was listening to a lot of Kansas and Pink Floyd. But this budding collaboration was broken up by- what else? - Life. Families moved, different high schools, and their musical trajectories went in similar but separate directions. Fito began picking up on the bass lines of the music he liked and started playing bass, which naturally led him into Reggae music, while Tito continued his violin studies and playing electric guitar in small Rock bands. Fito studied Biology at UPR Mayagüez and graduated with a BS, while Tito was studying Music Education at Inter American University in San Germán and graduated with a BA. I had not realized until a couple years ago that I was fortunate enough to see Fito make his first public appearance as a bassist, playing with the Blues/Rock group

Fito se inclinaba más hacia el Rock Progresivo y escuchaba mucho a Kansas y a Pink Floyd. Pero esta naciente colaboración fue interrumpida por nada más y nada menos que… la vida. Las familias se mudaron, escuela superior diferente, y su trayectoria musical se encaminó en direcciones similares aunque diferentes. Fito comenzó a aprender las líneas melódicas del bajo de la música que le gustaba y “Tito” at Calypso Jan. 29

Adolfo (Fito) González
The Professors at the Tamboo far too many years ago for me to feel entirely comfortable in remembering. From those early beginnings they both continued to play Latin Rock or Reggae and developing their skills. And by the mid 90’s both had evolved into studying Jazz music- Fito approaching it from the Fusion Jazz aspect, and Tito beginning a serious study of the straight-ahead classic masters. This versatility allowed them to play in different but increasingly better-known groups on the island (most recently, Millo Torres for Fito, and Sol d’Menta for Tito) while also encouraging Tito to create a career as a solo performer (he plays regularly at the Copa Marina Hotel in Guánica). So how did this duo come together? Mostly by ‘chance’ (if that’s the right name for summing up decades of practice and hard work). Tito had gotten a solo gig at the Calypso, and called Fito to let him know he’d be in town. Fito had just gotten a new acoustic bass guitar, and offered to sit in for a few songs to try it out. And, like two disparate themes in a symphony finally coming together in harmony, they found their old connection was still there. “It was like we had been playing together all along” Fito commented. After a couple of performances they were wondering what to call their duo, and the DJ David Dedos invented the perfect name for this unique blending of talents.

Now of course you’re asking ‘well, what sort of music do they play?’ and this, unfortunately, is where names don’t quite work. They bill their music as ‘a Jazz-Rock brew’, which is true enough as far as it goes since most of the repertoire is drawn from those two genres. However Tito brings a lot of delicate

Fito estudió Biología en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Mayagüez y recibió un Bachillerato en Ciencias, mientras Tito estudiaba Educación Musical en la Universidad Interamericana en San Germán recibiendo un bachillerato en artes. Yo no me había dado cuenta hasta hace dos años que tuve la buena fortuna de ver a Fito en el Tamboo en su primera presentación tocando como bajista con The Professors, un grupo de Blues/Rock hace ya suficientes años como para sentirme completamente cómodo con el recuerdo. Y desde esos comienzos, ambos continuaron tocando Rock Latino y Reggae y desarrollando sus destrezas. Y ya para la mitad de los años 90, ambos habían tornado al estudio del Jazz. Fito practicando la fusión del Jazz (Fusion Jazz) y Tito comenzando el estudio serio de los maestros del Jazz Clásico. Esta versatilidad les permitió tocar en la isla con grupos diferentes y mejor conocidos. (mas recientemente Fito con Millo Torres, y Tito con Sol d’Menta) mientras motivaba a Tito a desarrollar su carrera como solista (El toca regularmente en el Hotel Copa Marina en Guánica). ¿Y cómo se forma este dúo? Mayormente por ‘casualidad’ (si es que esa es la mejor palabra para reunir décadas de práctica y trabajo arduo). Tito había
phrasing from his classical music background, balanced with passages of percussive chord structures that echo his heavy metal interests. Fito’s slightly syncopated bass lines come from the school of jazz, but are delivered with an upbeat emphasis that owes a lot to Reggae. So the end results are not what is typically meant by ‘fusion’- I think it really depends on what sort of mood you are in, or want to be in. Honestly, you have to listen to them and think of your own name for this music! They often play at the Calypso Café in Rincon, and at the 110 Thai in Aguadilla, so check those businesses’ websites for performance dates. Comentó Fito. Después de un par de presentaciones ellos se preguntaban cómo llamarían a su dúo, y el DJ David Dedos se inventó el nombre perfecto para esta unión única de talentos. Ahora, ustedes se estarán preguntando qué tipo de música ellos tocan. Es aquí, desafortunadamente, donde los nombres no funcionan. Ellos describen a su música como una destilación de Jazz y de Rock (‘a Jazz-Rock brew’), lo cual es lo suficientemente acertado ya que el repertorio proviene de esos dos géneros. Sin embargo, Tito aporta un fraseo delicado proveniente de su trasfondo musical clásico, balanceado con pasajes de estructuras de acordes percusivos que comunican su interés en la música metálica. Las líneas melódicas del bajo de Fito provienen de la escuela del Jazz, pero se comunican con un énfasis animado que nos hace pensar en el Reggae. Así que el resultado final no es lo que típicamente se llama ‘fusión’ –Pienso que realmente depende en que tipo de ánimo uno se encuentre o uno se desee encontrar. ¡Honestamente, tiene que escucharlos y pensar en el nombre apropiado para esta música! Edward’s Food Mart 3rd Anniversary El tercer aniversario de Edward’s Food Mart On January 21st the parking lot in front the supermarket was turned into a party happening. For those who have attended the wine and tequila tastings at Edwards, you know that José Luis and Gladys really know how to throw a party and this was no exception. The day featured a pig roast, organic wine (and non-organic for the purists), rum, pretty models, music by Andrés González, Joey’s father in law, dancing, singing and more. The party began at eleven a.m. and was still going strong at four p.m. Loyal customers joined amazed visitors and a good time was had by all. Page 60
El 21 de enero el estacionamiento al frente del supermercado se convirtió en la sede de una verdadera fiesta. Para aquellos que han asistido a las fiestas de degustación de tequila y vino en Edward’s, usted sabe que José Luis y Gladys realmente saben ofrecer una fiesta y esta no fue la excepción. Brindaron lechón asado, vino orgánico (y no-orgánico para los puristas), ron, atractivas modelos, la música de Andrés González, suegro de Joey, baile, canto y más. La fiesta comenzó a las 11am y continuaba en su apogeo aun a las 4pm. Sus fieles clientes se unieron a los sorprendidos visitantes y todos se divirtieron.

It’s election time again! And it is never too late to join humankind’s favorite pastime. I think love of politics might even surpass love of sports. In Puerto Rico, politics is taken seriously. For those who are new to Puerto Rico, this is how I understand the party system here. The three main parties are identified by colors: Red for the Populares (PPD) or the party that prefers the present Commonwealth status and would like this status to be enhanced but not changed; the Blue party or the party for Statehood (PNP) is the party with the philosophy of lobbying the US Government to make Puerto Rico the 51st State; and the Green Party or Independentistas (PIP) that has the philosophy of Independence for Puerto Rico. “Here we vote for the party philosophy and not the man or woman,” a friend once told me. That made sense when the party philosophies and goals are so different. There are the same partisan challenges here as in the states when one party rules the White House and the other the Congress. For instance, in Puerto Rico today the Blue Party (PNP) is in the Governor’s Mansion, but our town of Rincón is run by the Red Party (PPD). (That means we don’t have much clout in San Juan right now.) So you think you might try to guess who is going to win and try to make your town on the winning side? You could guess wrong and have the same problem in reverse so I think that voting your personal philosophy is as good a way as any to vote. BUT VOTE! It is your right and privilege.
¡Es de nuevo el tiempo de las elecciones! Y nunca es demasiado tarde para practicar el deporte favorito del resto de la humanidad. Creo que el amor por la política sobrepasa el amor por los deportes. En Puerto Rico la política se toma muy en serio. Para aquellos que han llegado a Puerto Rico recientemente, así es como yo entiendo el sistema partidista de aquí. Existen tres partidos principales los cuales están identificados por colores: Rojo para los Populares (PPD) o el partido que prefiere el estatus actual del Estado Libre Asociado y a quienes les gustaría que el mismo fuera mejorado pero no cambiado; el partido Azul o el partido pro estadidad (PNP) que es el partido cuya filosofía es la de cabildear para que los Estados Unidos le conceda a Puerto Rico ser el estado No. 51; y el partido Verde o los Independentistas (PIP) cuya ideología es la de la independencia para Puerto Rico. “Aquí votamos mas por la filosofía del partido que por el candidato o la candidata,” me dijo una vez una amiga. Y eso tiene sentido cuando las ideologías y metas de los partidos son tan diferentes. Tenemos los mismos retos partidistas tanto aquí como en los Estados Unidos cuando un partido rige la Casa Blanca y el otro el Congreso. Por ejemplo, actualmente en Puerto Rico, el Partido Azul (PNP) es el que rige la mansión ejecutiva, pero aquí en Rincón, ganó el Partido Rojo (PPD). (Esto significa que no tenemos mucha influencia en San Juan actualmente.) Así que, ¿tratará usted de adivinar quién ganará la gobernación y tratar de que el partido ganador también gane en su pueblo? Usted podrá adivinar incorrectamente y tener el mismo problema pero al revés, así que pienso que votar por su ideología personal es una forma válida de votar como cualquier otra. ¡PERO VOTE! Es su derecho y su privilegio. ¿Cómo hacerlo? -Primero tiene que inscribirse. Eso es fácil. La Junta de Inscripción Permanente está actualmente localizada en la Carr. 115, Km. 12.8 en el edificio al lado del antiguo Western Bank. -Las horas de oficina son de lunes a viernes de 8am-12pm y de 1-4pm -Para votar en las elecciones del 6 de noviembre de 2012 usted tendrá hasta 60 días antes de la elección para inscribirse. Esto no aplica para las primarias del 18 de marzo de 2012. -Requisitos para los votantes:

The registrar’s office (Junta de Inscripción Permanente) is now on Carr.115 Km. 12.8 in the building next to the old Western Bank building. -Office Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00am–12:00pm and 1:00–4:00pm -To vote on the November 6th elections, you will have up to 60 days before the election to register.

- Requirements for Voters: Achieve the age of 18 on or prior to November 6, 2012 Proof of US citizenship in the form of an original birth certificate or passport If you were born outside of the USA, bring naturalization papers and other documents to prove citizenship. A passport must be current. Born in Puerto Rico? The demographics office has all your information and no papers are required to prove citizenship. March 18 is the date for the Primary Election. ANY REGISTERED VOTER can vote in this primary. However, registration is closed for this election which is between two members of the Blue Party for the position of Mayor of Rincón. The Red Party also has a Primary on the same day to select its candidates for senator and representative. Even though you do not need to identify yourself with a party when you register to vote, you will need to do so for the Primary. You must be a permanent resident of Rincón to vote here. That means that Rincón must be your Primary Residence and you must live here the majority of the year. You will not be questioned at the Registry office, but you will have to sign a document verifying the truth of your residency, citizenship and the information you are providing. Otherwise you are running the risk of being accused of perjury. You will receive an electoral ID card (tarjeta de identificación electoral) at the time of registering, but all applications are turned over to the Local Election Commission and verified. If you go to vote and your name is not found on the list, you may have to further prove your Rincón residency. There are methods to remedy this situation and will be explained if it happens to you, but it happens rarely and should not be a concern or keep you from registering to vote. A note: you are not required to announce your party (Red, Blue or Green) except for Primary elections. If you have moved within the last four years within Rincón or have moved here from another town in Puerto Rico, you must do a transfer (transferencia) or register, depending on your situation. If you just moved from one Barrio to another you must do a relocation (reubicación). It only takes a minute because your information is already on file. If you have moved and are voting in your old neighborhood, your vote could be challenged. Re-register before the end of August 2012. For those of you who will be experiencing your first election year in Puerto Rico, there are two traditions that I think may be unique to the island. One is the use of vehicles with loudspeakers playing the candidates theme songs and announcing events or general messages for the candidate. The other is the “Caravana” (or a caravan of cars supporting the candidates) which is the Island version of the “Motorcade” on the United States mainland. These caravans, like the motorcades, can be long and will definitely disrupt traffic. Since you are never sure when or where they will start or end, you should be prepared to leave extra time to travel on weekends. But it is in the great democratic tradition of involving the citizens in the election process and therefore should be cherished. Or at least that is the position of one good Rincoeña woman on the subject.

CUALQUIER VOTANTE INSCRITO puede votar en esta primaria. Sin embargo, las inscripciones ya están cerradas para esta elección que es entre dos candidatos del Partido Azul para la alcaldía de Rincón. Ese mismo día el Partido Rojo también tiene Primarias para la candidatura a senador y representante. A pesar de que usted no necesita identificarse con ningún partido cuando se inscribe para votar, usted necesitará hacerlo para las Primarias. Usted debe ser un residente permanente de Rincón para poder votar aquí. Esto quiere decir que su residencia primaria debe ser en Rincón y que usted vive aquí la mayor parte del año. No lo pondrán en duda en la Junta de Inscripción Permanente, pero usted tendrá que firmar un documento certificando la veracidad de su residencia, su ciudadanía y de la información que provee. De no ser así, corre el riesgo de ser procesado por perjurio. Usted recibirá una tarjeta de identificación electoral al momento de inscribirse. Todas las solicitudes son sometidas a la Comisión Local de Elecciones y son verificadas. Si usted va a votar y su nombre no aparece en la lista, tendrá que someter evidencia adicional que pruebe que usted es residente de Rincón. Hay formas de remediar esta situación y se lo explicarán si este fuera su caso, pero esto casi nunca ocurre, no debe preocuparle o impedirle que se inscriba. Nota: usted no necesita mencionar el partido de su predilección (Rojo, Azul o Verde), excepto para los eventos de Primarias. Si usted se ha mudado a Rincón durante los últimos 4 años, o se ha mudado aquí de otro pueblo de Puerto Rico, usted debe efectuar una transferencia o una inscripción según sea su caso. Si se mudó de barrio debe efectuar una reubicación. Solo tomará un minuto porque su información ya está en archivo. Si usted se mudó y vota en su precinto anterior, su voto puede ser recusado. Reinscríbase antes de fines de agosto del 2012. Para aquellos que tendrán la experiencia de presenciar por primera vez unas elecciones en Puerto Rico, hay dos tradiciones que creo que son únicas en la isla. Una de ellas es el uso de vehículos con altoparlantes tocando las canciones publicitarias de los candidatos y anunciando eventos o mensajes generales de los candidatos. El otro es la “Caravana” (una caravana de carros en apoyo a los candidatos), la cual es una versión isleña del “Motorcade” de los EEUU. Estas caravanas, como los “Motorcades”, pueden llegar a ser largas y definitivamente interrumpirán el tráfico. Como usted nunca estará seguro cuando o donde comienzan o terminan, asegúrese de salir con tiempo adicional durante los fines de semana. Pero es una tradición democrática el incluir a los ciudadanos en el proceso electoral y debe ser apreciado. O al menos esa es la opinión de una buena rincoeña al respecto.

Lucky 13 BBQ & Bar Opens Apertura del Lucky 13 BBQ @ Rincón Inn On Friday the 13th of January, Lucky 13 BBQ and Anchor Bar opened its doors. Owners Ryan and Leah West have relocated from Atlanta, Georgia bringing with them their BBQ traditions. Cooking runs in the family as Ryan is Allison West’s brother. Allison is the chef at Pool Bar (Sushi) and has a catering business. The 13th was her birthday. It was a grand celebration of both events.
