Every Wedding Begins With a Love Story Toda Boda Comienza con una Historia de Amor
Malorie Tillero and Collin Gibbs did not have to travel much farther than the very place they fell in love to celebrate their perfect day. On December 9, 2016, the couple tied the knot in front of family and friends at their picturesque wedding at Casa Por Fin, Dogman’s Beach, Rincón, Puerto Rico. Before we delve into the details of their wedding, let’s get to know a bit more about Malorie and Collin.
Malorie Tillero y Collin Gibbs no viajaron muy lejos que al mismo lugar donde se enamoraron para celebrar su día perfecto. Un 9 de diciembre de 2016, la pareja contrajo matrimonio junto a familiares y amigos en la pintoresca Casa Por Fin, en Dogman’s Beach, Rincón, Puerto Rico. Antes que entremos en los detalles de la boda, vamos a conocer un poco mas de Malorie y Collin.
The Bride La Novia
Malorie Tillero was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Rincón. Her grandmother opened the El Bohio bar in 1990 at Maria’s Beach. Eight years ago, Malorie took over the business, and now runs it with her own healthy twist by serving freshly squeezed juices and healthy smoothies. Malorie enjoys teaching and practicing yoga as well as spending time with her two dogs, Lady and Princess.
Malorie Tillero nació en Puerto Rico y fue criada en Rincón. Su abuela abrió El Bohío Bar en el 1990 en Maria’s Beach. Ocho años atrás, Malorie se hizo cargo del negocio y ahora le ha dado un giro saludable con jugos recién exprimidos y batidas. Malorie disfruta enseñando y practicando yoga, tanto como pasando tiempo con sus dos perros, Lady y Princess.
The Groom El Novio Collin Gibbs is originally from Ocean City, New Jersey. He made the move to Rincón, Puerto Rico seven years ago in order to pursue his passion for surfing and the ocean. He started out as a surf instructor and currently gives surf lessons, as well as helping Malorie with the bar. According to Collin, Rincón is the longest place he has ever lived in his life, and he absolutely loves it! Collin Gibbs es original de Ocean City, New Jersey. Se mudo a Rincón, Puerto Rico, hace siete años, persiguiendo su pasión por surfear y el mar. Comenzó como instructor de surfeo y actualmente da clases, como también ayuda a Malorie en el bar. Según Collin, Rincón ha sido el lugar donde más tiempo ha vivido en su vida y absolutamente lo adora.
The Proposal La Propuesta
After dating for several years, in March of 2015, the two set off on what Malorie thought was just going to be a fun day of paddle boarding. Collin suddenly dove into the water, and when he came up, he claimed to have found something on the bottom of the ocean- a ring! At first, Malorie thought he had legitimately found the ring, until she realized Collin was actually proposing to her!! And her answer… was yes. Después de salir por varios años, en Marzo del 2015, los dos salieron en lo que Malorie pensó iba a ser un divertido día de tabla de remo. Collin repentinamente se zambulló en el agua y cuando subió, le dice que había encontrado algo en el fondo del océano – ¡una sortija! ¡De primera intención, Malorie creyó que realmente él había encontrado la sortija, hasta que realizo que Collin estaba proponiéndole matrimonio! Y ella contesto….. ¡Sí! Page 10
The Wedding La Boda
December 9, 2016 was the date. Casa Por Fin at Dogman’s Beach was the setting. Love was in the air. Friends and family from Rincón and New Jersey all gathered to celebrate the love of two individuals. Malorie and Collin said “I DO” in front of a perfect Rincón sunset. Wedding planner Sarah Rosario from All Events made sure every detail was in order. Sarah and Malorie have been friends for over 10 years and according to Malorie “without her nothing would have been possible, she made it a truly intimate and special wedding.” Photographer Frances Davis ensured every precious moment was captured, and DJ Mouse did his thing by playing tunes to which everyone wanted to dance. According to Malorie, “It couldn’t have been a more perfect day.”
El 9 de diciembre de 2016, era el día. Casa Por Fin en Dogman’s Beach era el lugar. Amor en el Aire. Amigos y familiares de Rincón y New Jersey, se unieron para celebrar el amor de esta pareja. Malorie y Collin dijeron ¡Yo Quiero! En frente de un perfecto atardecer en Rincón. Sarah Rosario, la planificadora de la boda, se aseguro que cada detalle estuviera en orden. Sarah y Malorie llevan una amistad de 10 años y de acuerdo a Malorie, “sin ella no hubiera sido posible. Ella logró que la boda fuera realmente íntima y especial.” Frances Davis , el fotógrafo , capturo cada precioso momento, y DJ Mouse hizo su trabajo escogiendo la música que todos querían bailar. De acuerdo a Malorie, “El día no pudo ser mas perfecto”.

A Love Story Una Historia de Amor
Irma Dominguez Rodriguez & Mariano González Muñoz
I
love Irma and Mariano’s love story because it takes me back in time, giving me a sense of how Rincón and Puerto Rico used to be. Irma Dominguez Rodriguez and Mariano Gonzalez Muñoz met in Rincón, Puerto Rico in the year 1978. Irma is originally from the mountain town of Jayuya. Her parents moved to Rincón when she was 11 years old. Her half sister Sarah Alvarado Rodriguez married the original owner of the now famous Villa Cofresi Hotel, Johnny Velazco. She remembers when the Villa Cofresi was only made from wood and zinc- wow! Mariano is originally from Rincón and worked in construction at the time. His father, Mariano “Mayo” González Muñoz, was well known and would deliver groceries and other items by horseback to community members. He had special satchels known as ‘abanastas’ that were made out of palm fronds. The two first met one day on a beach in Puntas. Mariano was 22 years old and had just gotten his car stuck in the sand. Irma was 25 and was at this time working as a housekeeper . She just happened to walk by the beach that day to see what all the commotion was about. This was when they first caught each other’s eye. Mariano winked at Irma and the rest was history. They started dating casually and eventually moved in together in 1978. The wedding took place a few years later on April 20,1996. It was a traditional wedding that took place at the Catholic Church in Rincón. Irma remembers they were both very nervous. The reception took place at her home, as was traditional back then. All the family members and neighbors contributed food and music. According to Irma, “I felt like I had won the lottery with Mariano, even to this day. He is an amazing man and a great father.” Page 20

Irma Domínguez Rodríguez y Mariano Gonzales Muñoz se conocieron en Rincón, en el año 1978. Irma es originaria de las montañas de Jayuya. Sus padres se mudaron a Rincón cuando ella tenía 11 años. Su media hermana Sarah Alvarado Rodríguez se caso con el dueño original del ahora famoso Hotel Villa Cofresi, Johnny Velazco. Ella recuerda cuando Villa Cofresi era de madera y zinc – ¡wow! Mariano es originario de Rincón y trabajaba en construcción. Su padre, Mariano “Mayo” González Muñoz, entregaba comestibles y otros artículos, montado a caballo, a miembros de la comunidad. El llevaba una canasta, llamada ‘abanastas’ que estaba hecha con hojas de palma. Su primer encuentro fue un día en la playa en Puntas. Mariano tenía 22 años de edad y tenía su carro estancado en la arena. Irma tenía 25 y para ese entonces trabajaba como ama de casa. Ella de casualidad caminaba por la playa cuando fue a ver porque la conmoción. Esta fue cuando sus miradas se cruzaron. Mariano le guiñó a Irma y el resto es historia. Comenzaron a salir casualmente y eventualmente se mudaron juntos en el 1978. La boda fue unos años después el 20 de abril de 1996. Fue una boda tradicional en la Iglesia Católica en Rincón. Irma recuerda que los dos estaban muy nerviosos. La recepción fue en su casa, como era tradición antes. Todos los miembros de la familia contribuían con la comida y la música. De acuerdo a Irma, “Yo siento que me pegue con la lotería con Mariano, hasta el día de hoy. Es un hombre increíble y un gran padre.’

Nyssa & Francisco A Destination Wedding in Rincón Boda de Destino en Rincón
H
ow did a couple living in Chicago end up with a picture perfect destination wedding in Rincón? Here’s the story of Nyssa and Francisco and their dream-come-true wedding: Francisco was born in Puerto Rico and moved to the US when he was 12; Nyssa grew up on the Northside of Chicago. They met while Nyssa was the catering manager for a Cuban restaurant where Francisco frequently ate. After seeing each other casually for a few months, Nyssa ended up moving to a floor above him in the same building. Eventually the couple moved in together and bought a house. Marriage had always been in Nyssa’s long range plans and when first discussing this with Nyssa, Francisco stated that getting married in Puerto Rico on a beach had always been in his plans. Page 28

omo una pareja viviendo en Chicago termino con una fotografía de boda perfecta en Rincón? Aquí la historia de Nyssa y Francisco y su boda, su sueño hecho realidad: Francisco nació en Puerto Rico y se fue a los Estados Unidos cuando tenía 12 años; Nyssa creció en el Norte de Chicago. Se conocieron mientras Nyssa manejaba un restaurante Cubano donde Francisco frecuentaba. Después de verse casualmente por varios meses, Nyssa termino mudándose al piso de abajo en el mismo edificio donde él vivía. Eventualmente la pareja se mudaron juntas y compraron una casa. Casarse fue siempre para Nyssa un plan a largo plazo y cuando al principio hablamos al respecto, Francisco estableció que casarse en la playa en Puerto Rico siempre había estado en sus planes.
After the marriage proposal in 2015, the couple made a trip to the island and began to look for wedding venues on the West coast. After staying at several places, they debated between Isabela and Rincón. Seeing a beautiful private villa for rent online at Maria’s Beach, they finally decided that Rincón was the place to be. They ended up renting the 8 bedroom, 6 bath two-sided villa with the gorgeous lawn.
Después de la proposición de matrimonio en el 2015, la pareja dio un viaje a la Isla y comenzaron a mirar lugares para la celebración en el área Oeste. Después de quedarse en varios lugares, estaban debatiendo entre Isabela y Rincón. Vieron una villa privada por internet en Maria’s Beach y finalmente decidieron que Rincón era el sitio. Terminaron rentando la hermosa villa con 8 habitaciones, 6 baños y un precioso jardín.
The villa became the scene for their very special and unique eco-friendly and vegan wedding. They were passionate about their special day not having a negative impact on the environment, and were very careful to not over decorate or harm the planet in any way. Sarah Rosario and her team at All Events made this dream possible. Fusion Floral Art & Gift Gallery used local plants instead of traditional flowers. Chef Tommy of Quality Thyme Private Chefs produced a customized vegan menu for their guests. One hundred of their closest friends and relatives made up the attendees, using the occasion for their own wonderful Rincón vacations. The wedding ceremony was held on Maria’s Beach, and the reception was held on that beautiful lawn. The emphasis throughout was on Rincón’s natural beauty and the deep relationships with all who attended.
La villa se transformo en ese escenario tan especial y único, eco-amigable y boda vegana. Ellos fueron tan apasionados para que su día especial no tuviera ningún impacto negativo al medioambiente que fueron muy cuidadosos con la decoración para no dañar el planeta de ninguna manera. Sarah Rosario y su equipo de All Events hicieron este sueño posible. Fusion Floral Art & Gift Gallery utilizaron plantas locales en vez de las flores tradicionales. Chef Tommy de Quality Thyme Private Chef produjo un menú vegetariano personalizado para los invitados. Cien de sus más cercanos amigos y familiares atendieron, usando la ocasión para sus propias maravillosas vacaciones en Rincón. La ceremonia tuvo lugar en Maria’s Beach, y la recepción en los hermosos jardines. El enfoque fue en la natural belleza de Rincón y la profunda amistad de los presentes.
Talking to Nyssa and Francisco on the one year anniversary of their marriage gave evidence that their beautiful wedding in Rincón was an excellent starting point for their life together as a married couple.

Tendencias de Bodas By Rincon Events

U
ne of the most exciting aspects of wedding planning is designing and customizing our client’s decor and flowers. Each year we see common trends not only with our clients but within the wedding industry. Each Rincon Event wedding is unique but a few reoccurring themes for 2016-2017 seem to show in our events. Trends can been seen in floral design from bouquets, floral hair pieces, centerpieces, and the arbor, to cakes and signature drinks.

Cada año vemos tendencias comunes, no solo con nuestros clientes como también en la industria de bodas. Cada boda de Rincón Events es única, solo pocos recurren a los mismos temas como para la temporada del 2016-2017, parecen mostrar en nuestros clientes. Las tendencias pueden ser desde las flores usadas en los ramos de flores, flores en el pelo, centros de mesas, en el entorno, de bizcochos y la bebida preferida.
What we have really enjoyed is making aspects of the decor to one side. The greenery on the arbor to the top right or left, the flower crown mostly to one side, and the cake topping not necessarily on the entire cake. This creates a really modern and off beat look that evokes a fun, youthful energy.
Lo que realmente disfrutamos es la decoración de un lado. El verde en el entorno de arriba derecho o izquierdo, flores en la corona principalmente en un lado, y la cubierta del bizcocho no necesariamente en todo el bizcocho. Esto crea una moderna y no convencional presencia que evoca a lo alegre, con energía juvenil.
Local tropical greenery along with gold have been a common denominator in most events this year. Depending on how it’s designed, the greens can become elegant and classic to bohemian. Pops of tropical flowers and local fruit can make each look completely different. Palms and tropical greens mark aisles and arbors while smaller varieties adorn bridal and bridesmaids flower crowns and bouquets. A lot of our brides like to incorporate what is naturally growing here to compliment the island scenery and offer their guest visiting a chance to experience the island lifestyle. Page 46
El verdor tropical local acompañado con oro ha sido un denominador común en los eventos de este año. Dependiendo de cómo se diseñe lo verde puede convertirse en algo elegante y bohemio clásico. Una explosión de flores tropicales y frutas locales pueden dar un aspecto diferente. Palmas y verdor tropical pueden enmarcar los pasillos y pequeña variedad de adornos para las coronas de las damas de honor y el ramo. Muchas de las novias les gusta incorporar lo que es crecido aquí para complementar el escenario de Isla y ofrecer al visitante la oportunidad de experimentar el estilo de vida de la Isla.
Naked cakes and simple white buttercream frosted cakes continue to be our most requested sweets. Some unusual flavors have been chocolate, mango curd with white chocolate frosting. We really enjoy making each simple cake custom with our unique cake stands and topping each one with flowers and/or berries. Even offset flower touches can make the treat seem hip, funky and modern. Signature drinks usually involve fresh coconuts to pineapples hollowed out for a drinking vessel. Most of them topped with local rum and fresh tropical fruit juice.

Algunos sabores no comunes son el chocolate, cuajada de mango con tope de chocolate blanco. Nosotros realmente disfrutamos hacer estos simples bizcochos personalizados con nuestro único soporte de pastel y topes con flores y/o cerezas. Incluso toques de flores fuera de lugar son un deleite gracioso y moderno. La bebida favorita usualmente envuelve cocos frescos o piñas que podrían servir como un recipiente. Muchas de ellas acompañadas de ron local y jugo de frutas frescas.

bout a month ago a gentleman called our offices at Tres Palmas Inn and Villas to inquire about a small wedding celebration. “How small?” I asked. “Oh, very small. We are a party of six and I want something intimate and oceanfront.” He answered. “I only want…” and went on to name a list of things he wanted. It was a very small event with very little time to plan and I was not sure if I could help. Frankie, the groom on the phone, is a native of West Virginia, and he and Lisa, the bride, were childhood friends. With his voice full of emotion he continues to tell me that they reunited after 34 years, had fallen in love and got engaged. That he wanted to put together something very special for her. After that I couldn’t say no! So, with the list at hand and full of good intentions, I decided I would put it together myself. Almost instantly I realized that coordinating a wedding, no matter how small, requires professionals.

Somos seis y deseo celebrar algo íntimo frente a la playa.” Me contestó. “Sólo deseo…” Y prosiguió a darme una lista de las cosas que deseaba. Era un evento muy pequeño y con muy poco tiempo de planificación y no estaba segura de poderle ayudar. Frankie, que así se llama el novio, original del estado de Virginia, me cuenta que él y Lisa, su prometida, fueron amigos de toda su juventud. Y prosigue a narrar emocionado que luego de 34 años se reencuentran, se enamoran y se comprometen. Y que él deseaba celebrar algo muy especial para Lisa. Después de escuchar eso, no pude rehusarme. Así que, con mi lista y buena voluntad me propuse a organizarle yo la boda, dándome cuenta casi al instante que coordinar una boda, por más pequeña que fuera, conlleva la participación de profesionales.
A few weeks before, I had received information about a new event planning business in town that was trying to find a spot in this competitive industry in Rincón. This is how I realized: None of the professional coordinators will have the time to put together this event on such short notice with the ceremony, officiant, documents, dinner, photos, decoration and more. So I thought; “only the newest kid in town, the one that wants to prove others and himself that he can do it, will be the right choice.” So I called Eduardo Omar, co-owner with Quintin Curbelo, of Q&E Design, and I proposed the challenge. En semanas anteriores había recibido la información de una nueva empresa que buscaba abrirse puertas en el tan competitivo negocio de los eventos en Rincón. Pensé de esta manera; ningún coordinador con experiencia tendría el tiempo para organizar una boda en semanas que incluyera ceremonia, oficiante, documentos, cena, fotos, decoración y más. Pensé que solo “el más nuevo y el que desea probarse y probar que lo podía hacer sería la persona indicada”. Así que llamé a Eduardo Omar, co-propietario, junto a Quintin Curbelo, de Q&E Design, y le propuse el reto.
Without hesitation, Omar agreed to do the job. He immediately got in touch with Frankie and things started to roll. “We started by getting to know the couple, their character, their likes and their vision for the event and based on that we combined the different elements.” Says Eduardo. Very quickly Q&E got things moving. It was not surprising since even though they are a new business, their staff have experience in the field and have established relationships with local vendors. In less than 24 hours we had received a price quote including everything needed for a small but elegant wedding. Q&E was now in charge of making “Wedding Magic.” All I needed to do was secure the crew that was to shoot the video to be part of our 2017 promotional video. For that we hired A.R. Studios in Aguada. All legal paperwork had also been handled. Everything seemed to be going seamlessly. Close to 2 weeks before the wedding I get a call from a worried Frankie asking to change the wedding date. “Change the date?” I asked surprised. It seemed that the paperwork wouldn’t be ready until a day after the scheduled wedding date. He was willing to have a symbolic ceremony on the scheduled date, but wanted to know if we could possibly move the wedding by one day. The date was available, and so was Rev. Gregory Ruiz, the officiant, and Juan Luis Valentín, the photographer, so we were on for the new date. Everything in place, everything prepared. The day had arrived! It was windy and cloudy, but this did not lessen the determination of everyone to make this the beautiful and special occasion Frankie and Lisa had dreamed about. So, with a wedding party of 4 instead of the original 6, our “pequeña boda” (small wedding) was a reality. Then, unexpectedly, there was an emergency with the caterer. Immediately Q&E takes control of the situation by taking off their planner hats and exchanging them for aprons. And voila food was served in time as planned!!!.
Omar, sin dudarlo, accedió a realizar el trabajo. Inmediatamente lo puse en contacto con el novio y comenzaron los preparativos. “Comenzamos conociendo sobre la pareja; su carácter, sus gustos y qué cosas tenían en mente para la ocasión, y basado en ello combinamos todos los elementos”. Nos comenta Eduardo. Rápidamente Q&E puso todo en marcha. Pero no nos sorprendió ya que a pesar de que Q&E son una nueva empresa, su personal tiene experiencia en el campo y tienen relaciones establecidas con los proveedores locales. En menos de 24 horas recibimos una cotización que incluía todos lo necesario para una boda elegante pero pequeña. Ya todo iba en marcha. Ya estaba en manos Q&E realizar “el milagro”. Solo me ocupaba coordinar la grabación de la boda que será parte de nuestro video de la promoción de 2017 y para ello empleamos a A.R. Studios en Aguada. En el aspecto legal también comenzaron las gestiones. Todo parecía moverse en perfecta velocidad y armonía. Cerca de dos semanas antes de la boda recibo la llamada del novio, muy preocupado pues necesitaba cambiar la fecha. “¿Cambiar la fecha?” Le pregunté sorprendida. Los papeles necesarios para la ceremonia no estarían listos hasta el día siguiente del pautado para la boda. Frankie estaba dispuesto a que si no había remedio, se casarían simbólicamente sin el papel. Pero la fecha estaba disponible, así que, se cambió la fecha para el día siguiente y exitosamente, todo pudo cambiarse sin problemas, incluyendo al Rev. Gregory Ruiz el oficiante y Juan Luis Valentín, fotógrafo. Todo en su lugar, todo preparado. Ya el día había llegado. Era un día ventoso y un poco nublado, pero nada de esto cambió la determinación de todos de que este día fuera lo hermoso y especial que la pareja había soñado. Con un grupo de 4 en vez de los 6 originales, nuestra pequeña boda ya era una realidad. Pero imprevistamente, una situación de emergencia le surge al personal encargado de la comida. Sin dudarlo un instante, Q&E toma de nuevo el control de la situación cambiando sus “sombreros por delantales” y la comida se sirvió sin novedad.
“We are very pleased.” Says Eduardo Omar. “It has been an incredible experience; lots of communication and flexibility. We got very emotional as we saw how the wind caressed the flowers, and having the ocean sounds as background. It was an unforgettable moment.”
“Estamos muy satisfechos,” nos dice Eduardo Omar. “Ha sido una experiencia increíble, mucha comunicación y flexibilidad. Nos llenamos de emoción al ver como el viento jugaba con las flores y escuchando el sonido del mar como trasfondo. Fue un momento inolvidable”.
It happened! We made it!!! It was a team effort working along with the Tres Palmas Inn and Villas staff and Ms. Nancy Rivera, the manager; Q&E in charge of coordination and design; and all the local vendors that performed with the utmost excellence.
Se logró, lo logramos. Fue un esfuerzo de equipo contando con el personal de Tres Palmas Inn and Villas y su gerente, Nancy Rivera; Q&E a la cabeza del diseño y la coordinación y todos los proveedores locales que realizan un trabajo de excelencia. Frank y Lisa no pueden estar más felices y satisfechos. “Todo fue fantástico. El trato, el detalle, la calidad. ¡No podemos creerlo, especialmente cuando muchos nos dijeron que no podían hacerlo, y sí se pudo!” Por nuestra parte, reiteramos que, a pesar de utilizar constantemente la frase de “No hay trabajo ni muy grande ni pequeño para nosotros,” pudimos esta vez comprobar que podemos decir orgullosamente que es verdad y que hacer magia para la boda es definitivamente posible.
Frank and Lisa are beyond happy and satisfied. “Everything was fantastic-how we were treated, the details, the quality of the service. We could not believe it, especially when we were told “No” by so many. And it was possible!!!!” On our part, we reiterate that, we have used the phrase “No job is too big or small for us.” But this time we were able to proudly say that we really mean it, that it is true. And… making Wedding Magic is definitely possible.
