Welcome There are two main reasons to buy your holiday gifts in Rincón. First is that you will find something unique to give. Most of our gift shop owners are artists themselves beginning their businesses as a way of marketing their own art. They have an artistic sense of style in their bones. You will see it in the way they display the merchandise in their stores and galleries. So to begin with, you know you are in knowledgeable hands for gift suggestions. The second reason is to keep our hard- earned money in a place that continues to give back to us. Why send money off the island buying merchandise readily available when you can find something quite special, unique, made locally and save yourself all sorts of holiday harassments by buying right here at home? I have long wanted to do an issue like this. Lots of items, shown with prices -- Coqui suggestions for gift giving. It was so much fun going to all the gift shops with Alexandra Muñiz as photographer. We had a hard time choosing. This is really a small sample of what is available. For the girls/women: always jewelry –every one of our shops has something great in that department. Try not to do all your shopping in one place. There is sea glass, silver, mixed media, some great imports ( it’s ok to buy imports..BUT buy them locally) – or How about a gift certificate to one of your favorite beauty shops? Massage therapist? Facial? Classes? Most of the advertisers you see in the Coqui are happy to provide you with gift certificates. For the boys/men: anything from our surf shops from sunglasses to baggies. But why not think about a surf, paddleboard or kite sailing lesson? Or do you know someone who has always wanted to learn to scuba dive? We have great teachers in all these sports. Clothing, shoes, flip flops, even cologne – look on page 24 for suggestions. Families: Or what about a family snorkeling cruise on the Katarina? Page 6
La segunda razón es mantener el dinero que ganamos con nuestro sudor en un lugar que continúa reciprocándonos con creces. ¿Por qué mandar su dinero fuera de la isla comprando mercancía que puede encontrar dondequiera, cuando usted puede hallar algo especial, único, hecho en Puerto Rico, ahorrándose así todo tipo de inconvenientes durante las fiestas? Durante mucho tiempo deseaba publicar un ejemplar como este. Muchos artículos con sus precios, y nuestras sugerencias de lo que puede comprar aquí. Para los niños/hombres: cualquier cosa de nuestras tiendas de Surf, desde gafas de sol a pantalones “baggies”. ¿Por qué no pensar en lecciones de surf, paddleboard o kite sailing? ¿O conoce a alguien que siempre haya querido aprender a bucear? Tenemos excelentes instructores en todos estos deportes. Para sugerencias de ropa,

All are available in our gift shops and local markets. There are gift certificates to restaurants. Or how about ordering your Christmas dinner from one of the bakeries or restaurants? You can make gift donations (for the people on your list who truly have everything) made to charitable organizations like the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF). Or better yet, buy the el Coqui 2013 Calendar at any of the gift shops and you will automatically be supporting this organization with your purchase. As you go through the November issue of el Coqui of Rincón, we’ve tried to pick a few of our favorite items to feature. Be sure when you go shopping in our town that you tell the owners “We saw this in el Coqui.” Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. This column is about new places. This summer I had a great time visiting our restaurants and blogging about them in www. buenprovechorincon.com. I will continue to visit and write about our restaurants for the Coquí and Buen Provecho Rincón. The new issue of the restaurant guide has been postponed until March, but we will update the website to include the new restaurants. Jim Westfall of 413 Geek is the webmaster for the site. Right across from the post office on Carr. 115, is Do Galego, a Spanish Tapas (small plates) – restaurant. Owners Mili López and Juan Miguel Seoane greet you, cook for you, serve you a marvelous Sangría – guess the secret ingredient – and generally make this place, with its good Galician cooking and club-like atmosphere, just where you want to be. Parrillería Vacas Gordas in the Vista Mar Plaza on Carr. 115 Km. 12.0 is all about perfectly grilled meats. Some people call it the “Argentinian Restaurant”. I call it just plain excellent and delicious. Small, only 8 tables. You’ll have to get there early if you don’t want to wait. It opens at 5 pm Wed. through Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon. There are pastas for those who don’t eat meat and the vegetable side dishes are always whatever is fresh in the market that day. La Copa Llena @ the Black Eagle at Rincón’s Marina opens this month. Chef Brendan Basham moves the kitchen and bar from Casa Isleña to the most famous dining and drinking spot in Rincón. They are testing new menu items but this will be the place to watch the sunset, eat and drink. The Casa Isleña kitchen at the Inn in Puntas will now serve breakfast and lunch daily. The kitchen will be managed by Mitch Leonard. A great place to start a beach day. Escape @ CV (CasaVerde), opening in early November, is going to be a surprise. All I know as I write, is that everything will be local, fresh, Caribbean inspired, and that the restaurant will be open for lunch,

Johnny González is the manager and Sarah Rosario, his talented wife and owner of All Events, is his collaborator. Decorations are by Marilú Bonet of Dkorissimo. The Guest Inn rooms all feature the great view of the water and Desecheo Island.

History through Art/La historia a través del arte Love and respect for Puerto Rico’s history was the motivation behind a public work of art on the wall of Restaurant Kaplash located on “las Curvas de Rincón”, Carr. 115 Km.7.0. Producing this work of art brought three friends together; the owner of Kaplash, Hiram Rivera Arce, artist Edgardo (Gardy) Rodríguez Acevedo, and poet, composer and musician Don Jesús (Yiyo) González Chaparro . Yiyo and Hiram’s father Don David Rivera, and Hiram have been longtime friends. Gardy and Hiram were classmates and have remained friends since their school days. These friendships offered a perfect creative environment with each man’s contribution essential to the whole of the project. It all began with a poem that Yiyo wrote. The poem paid homage to the courage of the Taínos who were the native inhabitants of Puerto Rico. He composed music for his poem which was inspired by the legend of Chief Urayoán and the Spaniard Diego Salcedo. In his book, The History of the Indians, published in 1969, author Ricardo E. Alegría writes: “at the beginning of the conquest the Indians thought that the Spaniards were immortals and they patiently

El amor y el respeto por la historia de Puerto Rico fue la motivación detrás de una obra de arte público desplegada en la pared del Restaurante Kaplash situado en “Las Curvas de Rincón”, Carr. 115 Km.7.0. La producción de esta obra de arte juntó a tres amigos; a Hiram Rivera Arce, propietario de Kaplash, al artista Edgardo (Gardy) Acevedo Rodríguez, y al poeta, compositor y músico Don Jesús (Yiyo) González Chaparro. Yiyo y Don David Rivera, el padre de Hiram, e Hiram, han sido amigos por mucho tiempo. Gardy e Hiram fueron compañeros de clase y han seguido siendo amigos desde sus días escolares. Esta amistad propició el ambiente creativo perfecto haciendo que la contribución de cada cual fuera esencial a la totalidad del proyecto. Todo comenzó con un poema que Yiyo escribió. El poema rendía homenaje a la valentía de los Taínos, los habitantes indígenas de Puerto Rico. El compuso la música para el poema que fue inspirado por la leyenda del Cacique Urayoán y el español Diego Salcedo. En su libro, La historia de las Indias, publicado en 1969, el autor Don Ricardo E. Alegría escribe:
tolerated their outrages. After a few years in 1511, Chief Urayoán decided to see if it was true. He ordered his men to attempt to drown a Spaniard. These Indians had the opportunity to carry out this order when a young Spaniard, by the name of Diego Salcedo, asked them to carry him across the Guaorabo River in Añasco so he would not get wet. The Indians picked him up but, on reaching the middle of the river, they let him fall and held him under the water. Then they took him to the riverbank and, full of fear, watched him for several days until they were sure that he was dead. Once convinced that the Spanish were mortals like themselves, the Indians began to rebel.” Deeply moved by Yiyo’s poem, Hiram contacted his friend Gardy and they began talking about creating a piece of art based on the poem. Hiram envisioned the work as a piece of art that would bear witness to the courage of the Taínos. He also hoped the work would inspire future generations to know the history of Puerto Rico and perhaps to pick up the baton in the country’s struggle for freedom. When Hiram talked about the “lasting”quality of the work, Gardy knew that mosaic tiles would be the perfect medium of expression for the piece. Mosaic tile has for centuries been a strong, sustainable artistic medium for public art.
The Poet Jesús González Chaparro (Yiyo) Yiyo first got interested in poetry in 1960 in a Spanish class where he learned the rhyming structure of poetry and began to write poetry himself. “Corazón”, his first original poem, was a poem about unrequited love. While working in several enterprises in the western region of

Estos indígenas tuvieron la oportunidad de llevar a cabo esta orden cuando un joven español con el nombre de Diego Salcedo les pidió que lo cruzaran a través del río Guaorabo en Añasco para que no se mojara. Los indios lo recogieron, pero al llegar a la mitad del río, lo dejaron caer y lo mantuvieron bajo el agua. Luego lo llevaron a la orilla del río y llenos de miedo, lo velaron durante varios días hasta que estuvieron seguros de que estaba muerto. Una vez convencidos de que los españoles eran mortales como ellos, los indios comenzaron a rebelarse. “ Profundamente conmovido por el poema de Yiyo, Hiram habló con su amigo Gardy y comenzaron a discutir la creación de una obra de arte basada en el poema. Hiram, a la manera de los mecenas renacentistas de las artes, patrocinó la pieza. El tenía la visión de una obra de arte que fuera un monumento duradero y diera testimonio de la valentía de los Taínos. Él también deseaba que el trabajo fuera una fuente de inspiración a futuras generaciones para conocer la historia de Puerto Rico y tal vez tomar la batuta de la lucha por la libertad. Cuando Hiram habló de la calidad “duradera” de la obra, Gardy supo que el trabajo de lozas en mosaico sería el medio perfecto de expresión para la pieza. El mosaico ha sido durante siglos un medio artístico sólido y duradero para la producción de arte público.

Puerto Rico and helping his father, Don Nicolás González, in his small grocery store in Barrio Caguabo of Añasco, Yiyo continued to write poetry and compose and sing his own songs. In 1995 after his father’s death, Yiyo took over the store, remodeled it and renamed it La Lomita de Yiyo, Carr. 115 Interior, Km.5.9 int. He added a bar and billiard table and began to present Bohemias (romantic music) every weekend. Five years ago he recorded a collection of his songs on a CD called Homenaje al Indio. The CD includes boleros, waltzes, traditional Jíbaro music and the poem that inspired the title of the recording and the mural on the wall at Kaplash. Gardy has included the poem at the far right of the mural making it a lasting memorial to the Taínos and to Yiyo’s poetry and patriotism. The CD is available at La Lomita de Yiyo. When asked about how he feels about his poem inspiring the mural Yiyo says that he is happy if he is able to inspire through his words. “My verses say it all: ‘When it rains up on the hills

and the rain carries the pain of the working man that loves his culture, there will be floods of liberation pouring into the valley from the heart of the great and courageous river, then my people will no longer be submissive and oppressed.’”
The Artist Edgardo Rodríguez Acevedo (Gardy) Gardy is a well-known Rincón artist. His painting of the Three Kings Surfing was the cover of el Coqui of Rincón twice in past years. Much of “Gardy Art” features his love of recycling materials from soda bottles into three kings, PVC pipe into amazing sea animals, adding shells or sand or other bits of found materials to his art. He finds conch shells and turns them into faces, pieces of bamboo become mermaids, the materials speak to him and this self- taught artist sees the piece immediately in his imagination. From that point it is a short time before the artistic creation is completed. The only teacher Gardy has had was the man who taught him to do mosaics. When Gardy lived in San Germán he apprenticed himself to Marcos Laboy, who is a master artist
El poeta: Jesús González Chaparro (Yiyo) Yiyo se interesó por la poesía en 1960, en una clase de español donde aprendió la estructura de la rima poética y comenzó a escribir poemas. “Corazón”, su primer poema original, era un poema sobre un amor no correspondido. Mientras trabajaba en varias empresas en el área oeste de Puerto Rico y ayudando a su padre, Don Nicolás González, en su pequeña tienda de comestibles en el Barrio Caguabo de Añasco, Yiyo continuó escribiendo poesía y componiendo y cantando sus propias canciones. En 1995, tras la muerte de su padre, Yiyo se hizo cargo de la tienda, la remodeló y le cambió el nombre a La Lomita de Yiyo, Carr. 115 Interior, Km.5.9 int. Añadió una barra y mesa de billar y comenzó a presentar Bohemias los fines de semana. Hace cinco años, grabó una colección de sus canciones en un CD llamado Homenaje al Indio. El CD incluye boleros, valses, música jíbara tradicional y el poema que inspiró el título de la grabación y el mural en la pared en Kaplash. Gardy ha incluido el texto del poema en el extremo derecho del mural como un homenaje permanente a los Taínos y a la poesía y patriotismo de Yiyo. El CD está disponible en La Lomita de Yiyo. Cuando le preguntamos a Yiyo sobre cómo se sentía

He helped Sr. Laboy with some of his large wall commissions and Sr. Laboy returned the favor by helping Gardy to install his own first major mosaic piece on the walls of Kaplash. As the men worked, the piece drew attention from those driving by including a teacher from San Juan who is preparing a history lesson for her class using the mural to illustrate the invasion of Puerto Rico by the Spanish. Gardy says of his experience, “I feel very grateful for the opportunity to create my first solo mosaic mural and so express my deep love for my country and culture through my art. I am especially grateful that I was able to include my mentor, Marcos Laboy, in the final part of the project.”
The Sponsor of the Art Hiram Rivera Arce Hiram and his wife Aileen Mercado Guach have owned Restaurant Kaplash for twenty-eight years. For ten years before becoming the owner, Hiram worked for the first owners of Kaplash – his parents. The restaurant located at the top of the hill between Rincón and Añasco is well known for its comida criolla, especially its empanadillas of seafood, and for its panoramic view. It has been a favorite place for both tourists and

Gardy es un reconocido artista rincoeño. Su pintura Three Kings Surfing ha sido la portada de el Coquí of Rincón en dos ocasiones en los últimos años. Gran parte de “ Gardy’s Art” representa su amor por el reciclaje de materiales convirtiendo botellas de refresco en reyes magos, tubería de PVC en animales marinos espectaculares, agregando a sus piezas de arte conchas o arena u otros trozos de material encontrado. El encuentra caracoles y los convierte en rostros, pedazos de bambú se convierten en sirenas, los materiales le hablan y este artista autodidacta puede ver la pieza inmediatamente en su imaginación. A partir de ese momento pasa muy poco tiempo antes de la consumación de la creación artística. El único maestro que Gardy ha tenido fue el que le enseñó el arte de mosaicos. Cuando Gardy vivía en

San Germán él se hizo aprendiz de Marcos Laboy, quien es un artista de mosaico y vitrales. Gardy ayudó al Sr. Laboy con algunas de sus piezas de murales de comisión y el Sr. Laboy le devolvió el favor ayudándolo a instalar su primera pieza importante en mosaico en las paredes de Kaplash. A medida que los hombres trabajaban, la pieza llamó la atención de los conductores que pasaban, motivando así a una maestra de San Juan a preparar una lección para su clase de historia utilizando al mural para ilustrar la invasión de Puerto Rico por los españoles.

Hiram y su esposa Aileen Mercado Guach han sido propietarios de Restaurante Kaplash por 28 años. Diez años antes de hacerse propietario, Hiram fue empleado de los primeros dueños de Kaplash-sus padres. El restaurante situado en la cima de la cuesta entre Rincón y Añasco es reconocido por su comida criolla, en especial sus empanadillas de mariscos, y por su vista panorámica. Desde que abrió sus puertas ha sido el lugar favorito de los turistas y el público local para comer y relajarse. Hiram dice que ha sido un honor patrocinar el mural de mosaico aportando su tiempo, su dinero y el espacio. En este mes, cuando se celebra el Día del Descubrimiento, dice con mucho orgullo y convicción: “Es nuestro deber patriótico recordar nuestra historia y cultura y defender nuestra libertad, orgullo y dignidad”. Hiram Rivera, Yiyo González y Gardy Rodríguez son parte de la tradición artística que asegurará que la historia de Puerto Rico siga siendo una fuente de inspiración para las futuras generaciones de puertorriqueños.

An exchange of culture Un intercambio cultural This past October a group of artists from Puerto Rico visited the island of St. Croix. The group was comprised of Bomba Urbana from Mayagüez that includes Luis “Güillo”Cruz and his wife Alexandra Muñiz Acevedo from Rincón, singer-songwriter and guitarist, Miriam Pérez of Rincón, and singer Fernando (“Fernandito”) Ferrer. Fernandito is a regular entertainer at local Rincón restaurants and night spots. This exchange was organized by Damary Burgos and husband Ramón López, both artists and university professors. A large group of Puerto Ricans have lived in St. Croix for many decades. The goal of the Friendship Festival was to introduce new generations of Cruzano-Boricuas to the music and dance of their Puerto Rican heritage. Bomba Urbana offered several workshops to elementary school children on the island to inspire them to keep their original culture alive. Having artists like Fernando Ferrer, Miriam Pérez and Bomba Urbana participate on this exchange fulfilled the mission of making clear that music, dance and art can create a bond between Puerto Rico and St. Croix. El pasado mes de octubre, un grupo de artistas de Puerto Rico visitó la isla de Santa Cruz: Bomba Urbana, un grupo de Mayagüez, que incluye a Luis “Guillo” Cruz y su esposa Alexandra Acevedo Muñiz de Rincón, la cantautora, Miriam Pérez de Rincón, y el cantante Fernando (“Fernandito”) Ferrer. Fernandito es un artista habitual en los restaurantes y establecimientos nocturnos locales de Rincón. Este intercambio fue organizado por Damary Burgos y su esposo Ramón López, ambos artistas y profesores universitarios. Un nutrido grupo de puertorriqueños ha vivido en Santa Cruz por muchas décadas. El objetivo del Festival de la Amistad Islas Virgenes – Puerto Rico fue el presentarle la música y la danza de su herencia puertorriqueña a las nuevas generaciones de cruzano-boricuas. Bomba Urbana ofreció varios talleres en las escuelas elementales de la isla para inspirarlos a mantener viva su cultura original. Tener artistas como Fernando Ferrer, Miriam Pérez y Bomba Urbana participando en este intercambio ha cumplido con la misión de dejar en claro que la música, la danza y el arte puede crear lazos entre Puerto Rico y Santa Cruz. Ya les han pedido que regresen. ¡Mucho éxito!
