Bienvenidos Welcome As January rolls in, so do the winter storms on the east coast of the United States. They bring to Rincón an abundance of waves and tourists, as well as the Legends Surf Classic, a surfing contest that is held in tribute to the originators of the sport on the island. People of all ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds enjoy surfing, and Rincón is lucky enough to have world-class waves in its own backyard that attracts people from all over the planet. In this issue, we feature three articles on surfing. The first article contains tips for novice surfers. The second article is on the importance of surfing for our economy, and the third article has a write up on the Legends Surf Classic contest. Please check out the list of events for the contest. There will be ceremonial activities, fundraisers, movie showings, music, and the contest itself. Parties will be held at a number of the local establishments in Rincón such as The Villa Cofresi, The Wine Cellar, Ode to the Elephants, Pool Bar, and Calypso. Be sure to participate in these events and support surfing’s tribute to the local living legends of Puerto Rico!

A medida que el mes de enero avanza, también lo hacen las tormentas invernales en la costa este de los Estados Unidos. Ellas traen a Rincón, una abundancia de olas y turistas, además del Clásico de las Leyendas del Surf, una competencia de surfing la cual se lleva a cabo como tributo a los originadores del deporte en la Isla. Personas de todas las edades, géneros y culturas disfrutan del surfing, y Rincón es lo suficientemente afortunado de tener olas de renombre mundial en su propio patio, las cuales atraen a personas de todas partes del planeta. En esta edición, presentamos tres artículos relacionados al surfing. El primero de estos artículos contiene sugerencias para los surfistas novatos. El segundo artículo trata sobre la importancia del surfing para nuestra economía y el tercero de estos, es un escrito sobre la competencia del Clásico de las Leyendas del Surf. Por favor revisen la lista de eventos para el torneo. Habrá actividades ceremoniales, recaudaciones de fondos, muestras de películas, música y la competencia en sí. Tips for novice surfers Consejos “Tips” para surfers novatos Surfing is a sport that puts us in direct contact with nature. It makes us truly live in the present time because while practicing the sport we have to concentrate on the present moment making it a sort of meditation in movement. It’s a sport different from your traditional athletics because it turns into a complete lifestyle. Any person who knows how to swim can learn how to surf. However, there are a few tips that will help the beginner surfer who is new to the waters of Rincón. The first tip is to choose the correct board for your level. A larger board with a lot of flotation will make surfing a more manageable task. If you have never surfed, I suggest using a foam board or “soft top,” as they are softer and safer. Having the proper equipment and the proper clothing allows you to dedicate your full attention to catching waves and maintaining your coordination and balance. Lycra rash guards are great for protecting yourself from the sun and the rashes that are common on the abdominal area. These garments should fit snugly to the body. Men should wear board shorts that come up slightly above the knee and for the ladies, make sure your bathing suits are securely tied so nothing moves out of place. After acquiring the proper gear and accessories, the next step is to decide when and where to surf. The best hours for surfing are early in the morning and later in the evening. Normally, during these hours the wind is calmer. Next, the beach you choose should match your level of experience. Page 14
El surfing, es un deporte que nos pone en contacto directo con la naturaleza. Nos hace vivir el presente, ya que al practicarlo tenemos que concentrarnos en el ahora y esto hace que se convierta en un tipo de meditación en movimiento. Es un deporte diferente a los deportes tradicionales, pues se convierte en un estilo de vida. Cualquier persona que sepa nadar puede aprender a surfear. Antes de comenzar a surfear hay que prepararse bien. Mi primer consejo, es escoger la tabla de surf apropiada. Que tenga una buena flotación y un tamaño apropiado, así será fácil de manejar. Si nunca has surfeado o eres principiante, una tabla de espuma o “soft board” sería la mejor selección dado el hecho de que son más seguras ya que son más blanditas de haber un impacto. Tener el equipo apropiado y la ropa apropiada ayuda a que uno solo tenga que concentrarse en mantener el balance, la coordinación y coger las olas. Las lycras o “rashguards” son buenas para protegerse del sol, pero más aún para que no le dé salpullido en el área abdominal. La misma debe quedar ajustada al cuerpo. Para los hombres, los “boardshorts” que quedan por encima de la rodilla son aconsejables así como para las chicas un traje de baño que quede lo suficientemente ajustado para evitar que se salga de lugar. Luego de tener el equipo y accesorios apropiados, el próximo paso es decidir donde y cuando ir a surfear. Las mejores horas para surfear son temprano en la mañana y al atardecer

In Rincon, most of the beaches have a combination of coral reef and sand bottoms. The beach with the sandiest bottom is Sandy Beach located in Bo. Puntas. You can find various fun peaks to surf at Sandy Beach. However, the downside is that the wind normally starts to blow hard earlier at Sandy Beach than at any of the other spots such as Domes and Marias because it is more exposed to the northerly winds. Maria’s beach is one of the beaches favored for beginners because there are many different peaks so surfers can spread out more easily. The most consistent beach for waves would be Domes. This beach has a bottom consisting completely of reef, and it is the beach where most of the locals surf so if you are a beginner you must always remember to respect the local surfers. Finally, we have Tres Palmas. It is one of the most recognized beaches in Puerto Rico and is of a very advanced level. Waves here can surge to over 20 feet if there is a big swell.

La playa que es mayormente arena es Sandy Beach, la cual tiene varios picos o puntos en el área del barrio Puntas. No obstante, ahí el viento comienza más temprano que en el área de Domes y María’s pues está más expuesta a los vientos del norte. La playa de María’s es la de mayor área de olas con diferentes picos o puntos de olas para surfear, brindando más espacio para que los surfers se distribuyan. La playa es básicamente de arrecife. Sin embargo, la playa más consistente de olas es la playa Domes, la cual también tiene arrecifes en su fondo. Esta es la playa donde se encuentra a la mayoría de los surfistas locales, así que si eres un turista y eres principiante respetar a los locales es muy importante. La playa de Tres Palmas, es la playa más importante de todo Puerto Rico y es

Another important factor to be aware of is the swell forecast. It is important to check the forecast to avoid getting stuck in the water during a sudden surge in wave size. You can easily check the surf forecast at one of these web sites: www.surfline.com, www.wavewatch.com, or www.magicseaweed.com. This way you can plan out your surf session for a time when the wave size will be ideal for you. It important to know you limits with wave size. It is also important to use common sense and not take unnecessary risks. The beaches of Rincon have no lifeguards watching over you. Knowing how to swim is necessary and being in generally good physical shape is a huge help. Surfing is a sport that requires a good amount of physical resistance. If you already have a background in another sport and already have good stamina and strength out of the water, your progress will be a lot quicker. Surf instructors will be able to help you a lot with your technique and are recommended for the beginner. Surfing is a sport that requires a lot of motivation and determination. With practice surfing strengthens your body and mind. There will be bad days and there will be good days. There will be days with a lot of waves and days with few. Enjoying nature and the present moment through surfing is a great gift available to all of us here in Rincón. So let’s Surf!

Esto para evitar estar dentro del mar si hubiera un sistema que hiciera que las olas subieran drásticamente. Así puedes hacer una agenda para organizar tus horas de surfing con el nivel apropiado de olas. Es muy importante conocer tus límites ya que en nuestras playas no hay salvavidas que velen por nuestra seguridad. Cada individuo y su sentido común son responsables de no arriesgarse innecesariamente. Saber nadar es imprescindible, al igual que estar en una condición física óptima. Esto debido a que el surfing es un deporte que requiere bastante resistencia física. Si posees un entrenamiento de fortaleza y aeróbico fuera del agua, tu desempeño y progreso será mayor y mejor. Si puedes contratar a un instructor de surfing, eso será de gran ayuda para desarrollar y aprender la técnica y los principios básicos. El surfing es un deporte que requiere una gran determinación y esfuerzo, sin embargo, te hace fuerte de cuerpo y de mente. La práctica hace la perfección. Habrá días buenos y días malos, habrá días de muchas olas y otros de pocas. Disfrutar de la naturaleza y el presente es de los mejores regalos que Dios a través del surfing nos regala día a día. ¡¡¡A surfear!!!

Cilantro and Coconut Vinaigrette This is a simple six-ingredient salad dressing recipe that is easy to make and boasts plenty of tropical flavor.
Esta es una receta muy simple de 6 ingredientes, la cual es fácil de hacer y posee mucho sabor tropical.
Ingredients
½ taza de vinagre de sidra española o vinagre de sidra de manzana 1 cucharada llena de cilantro picado 3 dientes de ajo grande 2 cucharadas de cebolla dulce picada ½ taza de aceite de coco, sin refinar, prensado en frío ¼ taza de aceite de oliva “extra virgen” Sal y pimienta
½ cup Spanish cider vinegar or apple cider vinegar 1 heaping tablespoon of chopped cilantro 3 large diced garlic cloves 2 tablespoons of finely diced sweet onion ½ cup of pure, unrefined, cold pressed coconut oil ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil salt and pepper to taste Instructions Combine all of these ingredients in a jar and shake well. Store in refrigerator and remove 10 minutes before using to allow the coconut oil to loosen up. Page 18

Surfonomics
How Rincón has influenced the global surf scene Surfonomics – Cómo Rincón ha influido en la escena mundial de surf For many of us, one of the things that distinguishes the sport of riding waves from other pastimes like skiing or golfing is that it’s basically free. But does that mean waves have no value? That has been a common misperception by the public and by governments around the globe. “The assumption is often that surfing is worth zero dollars,” says Surfrider Foundation’s Environmental Director Dr. Chad Nelsen. “Surfing is not perceived as being an important economic driver of the tourism economy in coastal communities, particularly by those making decisions about development along the coast.” When the value of natural resources is unknown, they are frequently assigned a value of zero. This mistake is often the case with surfing, where hackneyed stereotypes of lazy, burned out surfers result in disregard for the economic contribution of surfing to coastal communities. Not surprising to any surfer, surfing is an important economic driver in places where high quality surf attracts surfers to their community. These surfers then spend money in local businesses. Many of us would not live here or visit here, were it not for the amazing waves we enjoy. In turn, we Page 34
Para muchos de nosotros, una de las cosas que distinguen al deporte de correr olas de otros deportes como esquiar y el golf, es el hecho de que el mismo es básicamente gratis. Sin embargo, ¿eso significa que las olas no tienen valor? Esa ha sido la percepción errónea común del público y de los gobiernos alrededor del mundo. “La suposición suele ser es que el surfing cuesta cero dólares”, dice el Director Ambiental de la Fundación Surfrider, Dr. Chad Nelsen. “El surfing no es percibido como un motor económico importante para la economía turística en comunidades costeras, particularmente para aquellos tomando decisiones sobre el desarrollo a lo largo de la costa.” Cuando el valor de los recursos naturales es desconocido, se les asigna con frecuencia un valor de cero. stimulate the local economy. Believe it or not, the idea of ascribing an economic value to surfing was largely born here in Rincón. In 2001, a number of large-scale developments were proposed on the coastline in front of Tres Palmas. Local surfers and activists were concerned that these projects might not only adversely impact the hydraulics of the waves at Tres Palmas, but could also have a negative impact on both quality of life for Rincoeños and the local tourism economy. Consequently, the Surfrider Foundation commissioned an economic study by Dr. Linwood Pendleton. Dr. Pendleton’s study revealed that coastal and surfing tourism contributed at least $52 million a year to the Rincón economy (and that was over a decade ago!). Making the economic argument for the protection of Rincón’s rich natural resources was a turning point because it showed that conservation and natural resources are critical to Rincón’s ongoing economic development. From this study emerged the concept of “surfonomics” - an offshoot of natural resource economics that seeks to quantify the worth of waves, both in terms of their value to businesses and to surfers, including their non-market value — or how much people would be willing to pay not to lose them. Another way of thinking about “surfonomics” would be to consider how much would somebody pay for a comparable activity like snowboarding or even visiting an amusement park; plus how much is spent around the activity in local businesses. Armed with this information, the government denied the projects and the Salva Tres Palmas effort ultimately resulted in the designation of the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve in the heart of our surf-rich coastal community. The concept of “surfonomics” is spreading globally and has been reported in mainstream media including the Washington Post, Fortune and the Caribbean Business Journal. Our tiny town, which has been a hotspot on the surfing map since hosting the 1968 World Championships, has made another impressive and lasting contribution to the surfing world by setting a precedent for the use of economic analysis by numerous communities around the world to protect what we all hold sacred – perfect surfing waves.

El estudio del Dr. Pendleton reveló que el turismo costero y el surfing contribuían por lo menos $52 millones al año a la economía de Rincón (¡y eso fue hace más de una década!). Hacer el argumento económico para la protección de los ricos recursos naturales de Rincón fue un punto crucial, ya que mostró que los recursos naturales y la conservación de estos son fundamentales para el continuo desarrollo económico de Rincón. De este estudio, surgió el concepto de “surfonomics”- una rama de la economía de los recursos naturales la cual busca cuantificar el valor de las olas, tanto en términos de su valor económico para los negocios y para los surfistas, incluyendo su valor no comercial – o la cantidad que las personas estarían dispuestas a pagar para no perderlas. Otra manera de pensar en relación a “surfonomics” seria considerando cuanto pagaría alguien por una actividad parecida como el “snowboard” o inclusive visitar un parque de diversiones, además de cuánto se invierte en torno a esa actividad en los negocios locales. Armado con esta información, el gobierno negó los proyectos y el esfuerzo de “Salva Tres Palmas” finalmente resultó en la designación de la Reserva Marina de Tres Palmas en el corazón de nuestra rica y surfista comunidad costera. El concepto de “surfonomics” se está extendiendo a nivel mundial y ha sido reportado en los principales medios de comunicación como el Washington Post, la revista Fortune y el diario Caribbean Business. Nuestro pequeño pueblo, el cual ha sido un punto activo en el mapa del surfing desde que fue sede del Campeonato Mundial en 1968, ha hecho otra impresionante y duradera contribución al mundo del surf mediante el establecimiento de un precedente para el uso del análisis económico de numerosos comunidades a través de todo el mudo para proteger lo que todos consideramos sagrado – olas de surf perfectas.

1st LEGEND SURF CLASSIC- NOT JUST ANOTHER SURF CONTEST Primer Clásico de las Leyendas del Surf - No es simplemente otra competencia de Surf The Legend Surf Classic is the first surf contest in Puerto Rico specifically organized to honor the original pioneers of the sport of surfing in Puerto Rico most of whom are in their 60s and 70s today! The contest starts on Saturday, January 18, 2014 and ends on Monday, January 20, 2014. Are you old enough to remember the days before leashes and lightweight foam? In those days, there was a considerably greater element of risk involved when surfers lost their boards. There were no surf contests, and surfing was considered (to put it politely) less than socially acceptable. These pioneers surfed for the pure

El Clásico de las Leyendas del Surf es la primera competencia de surf en Puerto Rico, organizada específicamente para honrar a los originales pioneros del deporte del surfing en Puerto Rico. ¡La mayoría tiene hoy día entre 60 y 70 años! El torneo comienza el sábado, 18 de enero de 2014 y culmina el lunes, 20 de enero de 2014. ¿Eres los suficientemente mayor para recordar los días antes de las correas y las tablas de espuma liviana? En esos días, existía un considerable mayor elemento de riesgo en el momento en que los surfistas perdían sus tablas. No se llevaban a cabo torneos
love of the sport and dealt with the stigma and hassles so that surfing could eventually become ‘cool’, popular, and corporatesponsored. Their sacrifices and efforts are finally being honored at the 1st Legend Surf Classic. A constant debate within surfing, as with other sports, is about just how useful or relevant contests are to the sport itself. Everyone agrees that it is good to acknowledge the skill and dedication of the practitioners, but there is also a point where contests become almost exclusively a business project with detrimental impacts on the sport and the athletes involved. The Legend Surf Classic focuses on the human aspects of the sport and addresses some of the weakness of the typical contest format. Consider the fact that this contest includes for the first time (to my knowledge) a competitive age category of 66 yrs and older. In fact, the contest focuses on age categories usually ignored in typical surf contests. This is significant, since 40 or 50 years ago these athletes were true pioneers as they discovered the surf breaks and invented the techniques that everyone uses today. The contest will also have a 12 yrs and under category in recognition of the fact that the sport has finally matured into a trans generational phenomenon. It is important that the youngest surfers and older masters remain in touch with each other in a competitive framework. This is how knowledge and traditions are created and passed on.

Sus sacrificios y esfuerzos están siendo finalmente honrados en el 1er Clásico de las Leyendas del Surf. Existe un debate constante dentro del surfing, así como dentro de otros deportes, sobre cuán útiles o relevantes son las competencias para el deporte en sí. Todos están de acuerdo en que es algo bueno reconocer las habilidades y la dedicación de los participantes, no obstante, también hay un punto en el que las competencias se convierten casi exclusivamente en un proyecto de negocios con impactos perjudiciales al deporte y a los atletas involucrados. El Clásico de las Leyendas del Surf se enfoca en el aspecto humano del deporte y aborda algunas de las debilidades de las típicas competencias de surf. Consideren el hecho, de que esta competencia por primera vez incluye (a mi entender) una categoría en la que competirán personas de 66 años o más. De hecho, la competencia se enfoca en categorías por edades usualmente ignoradas en los típicos torneos de surf. Esto es muy significativo, ya que hace 40 o 50 años atrás estos atletas fueron verdaderos pioneros, descubriendo los saltos de surf e inventando las técnicas que todos utilizan hoy día.

Perhaps the most significant feature of this surf contest is the fundraising activities in benefit of surfers such as Jorge Machuca (justifiably called the Roberto Clemente of PR surfing) who requires physical therapy that he currently cannot afford. This is an inspiring example of the sport ‘taking care of its own’ and a cause well worth supporting. After the Legend events in Rincón, the Legend contest will hold events March 16-18, 2014 at Stop 8 in San Juan, where the contest’s focus will include restoring and helping preserve this original surfing spot in PR. Proposals are being designed following the model of ‘surf parks’ already developed in California and Hawaii. Perhaps this will also encourage Rincón to create a few of these protected areas? If you would like to participate in the Legend Surf Classic, please register through the Puerto Rico Surfing Federation’s website at www.http://fsprsurf.org.
La competencia también tendrá una categoría para jóvenes de 12 años o menos, para reconocer el hecho de que el deporte finalmente se ha convertido en un fenómeno que ha trascendido generacionalmente. Es de gran importancia que los surfistas más jóvenes y los maestros del surfing permanezcan en continuo contacto dentro de un marco competitivo. Es así como el conocimiento y las tradiciones son creadas y transmitidas. Tal vez, el elemento más distintivo de esta competencia de surf sean las actividades para recaudar fondos en beneficio de los surfers, como Jorge Machuca (justamente llamado el Roberto Clemente del surfing puertorriqueño) quien requiere de terapia física, la cual actualmente no puede costear. Esto es un ejemplo inspirador de como el deporte “cuida a los suyos” y una causa que vale la pena apoyar. Luego del evento de las Leyendas en Rincón, la competencia llevara a cabo actividades el 16-18 de marzo de 2014 en Stop 8 en San Juan, donde el enfoque de estas actividades incluirá la restauración y preservación de los lugares originales donde se practicaba el surfing en Puerto Rico. Diversas propuestas están siendo designadas para seguir el modelo de los “parques de surfing” desarrollados en California y Hawaii. ¿Tal vez esto alenté a Rincón a crear varias de estas áreas protegidas?
