iertamente nunca carecemos de animación y vida en Rincón. Esta edición le rinde homenaje a la vida y habitantes de este pequeño pueblo; familias inspiradoras, dueños de negocios, artistas, surfistas y hasta las pequeñas lagartijas en los árboles de tu casa. ¡Colectivamente, todos hacen de Rincón el lugar único que es!

ill Rodriguez Duffy is the artist known as “jillo.” Her mother was born in Rincón, the oldest of ten children. Like many, she had to leave to seek opportunities for her and her family. Born in New York, now an emerging artist, jillo studied early at the prestigious Pratt Institute of New York. But she did not pursue art for years. Upon returning to live in her native home of Puerto Rico, and concentrating on her art, six years ago, jillo has drawn from native Taino and other artistic traditions to develop her “earthscape” process. Using water, sand, clays and chalks from the earth she fashions abstract layers of shapes and colors, revealing natural energy of these elements. For example, the painting “Bomba” (on the cover) was created by layering leaves in a leathery look, finally stamped with actual leaves on top. Whether it is the glow of a fire reflecting on dancing trees with rustling leaves; the gesture of a long-necked bird captured at a moment of sunshine on moody, watery textures; or the feeling of a surfer getting ready for waves as a russet sun descends on the world – jillo’s earthscapes offer sights with feelings. Abstract, so you always see new things in them, her paintings are not a record of a moment, they are colors and forms always, like nature, in motion, alive.

ill Rodríguez Duffy es la artista conocida como “jillo”. Su mamá es natural de Rincón, y la mayor de 10 hijos. Como muchos, ella se fue de la isla en busca de oportunidades para ella y su familia. Nacida en Nueva York, y siendo actualmente una artista en formación, “jillo” comenzó estudios tempranos en el prestigioso Instituto Pratts de Nueva York. Pero por muchos años ella no se dedicó al arte. Al regresar a su tierra natal de Puerto Rico y concentrarse en su creación artística “jillo” se ha nutrido de la cultura Taína y otras tradiciones artísticas para desarrollar su proceso de “paisajes terrestres” (earthscapes). Utilizando elementos de la tierra tales como el agua, la arena, el barro y la tiza ella crea capas de figuras abstractas y colores que revelan la energía natural de dichos elementos. Por ejemplo, la pintura “Bomba” (de la portada) fue creada sobreponiendo hojas en capas que ofrecen una sensación como de piel, que finalmente fue sellada con hojas en la parte superior. Ya sea el resplandor del fuego reflejado en los árboles danzantes y sus hojas susurrantes; el gesto de un ave de cuello largo capturada a la luz del sol en una textura acuosa y temperamental; o el sentimiento de un surfista preparándose para las olas, mientras el sol rojizo desciende sobre el mundo - los paisajes terrestres de “jillo” ofrecen una visión repleta de sentimiento. Por ser abstractas, sus imágenes te ofrecen cosas nuevas, pero tampoco son la crónica de un momento, sino colores y formas que siempre, como la naturaleza, están vivas y en constante movimiento.

er resume was impressive, her recommendations were excellent. She displayed great qualities and skills that won her the job. Cristie Marie Rivera Nazario, at 17 years of age, still a high school student, showed great maturity, dedication, initiative, commitment and responsibility. But more than anything she demonstrated impeccable professional ethics, seriousness, and high personal and professional standards. “This young woman is an exception”, I thought. But upon meeting the Morales-Nazario family from Barrio Río Grande of Rincón, I realized that for them this is not the exception, but the rule. In the home of Dinora Nazario Morales and Jesús Morales Caro, the greatest accomplishment in their lives is the successful of this great business: their family. Dinora Nazario Morales, Jesús Morales Caro, and their children Cristie, Jesús, Jean and Jeydyliz, together, have close to 10 jobs, many awards, acknowledgements and honorable mentions for their work and contributions in the areas of service, sports and entrepeneurship. Dinora Nazario, is a Pastry Chef for the Rincón of the Seas Hotel, Pastry Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica; and owns a small independent pastry business. She says that the most important ingredients for her family recipe are perseverance, love and faith. “My best legacy to my children is for them to become useful and hard-working individuals.” While Jesús Morales Caro, police officer for 18 years, an ardent music lover, and founder of “Broken Nights,” a DJ, sound, and music service company; thinks that his example is the best education he can offer his children and considers equally important “the values of integrity, and working hard to reach your goals in life.” Page 10

Inmediatamente, Cristie Marie Rivera Nazario, con solo 17 aňos, aun estudiante de escuela superior, demostró madurez, dedicación, iniciativa, compromiso y extrema responsabilidad. Pero sobre todo evidenció una impecable ética profesional, seriedad y altos valores personales y de trabajo. Pensé “Esta es una excepción”. Pero al conocer a la familia Morales Nazario del Barrio Río Grande de Rincón, comprendí que para ellos esta es la regla. En el hogar de Dinora Nazario Morales y Jesús Morales Caro, el mayor logro obtenido en sus vidas es el éxito de esta gran empresa: su familia. Dinorah Nazario Morales, Jesús Morales Caro, y sus hijos Cristie, Jesús, Jean y Jeydyliz, entre todos, tienen cerca de 10 empleos, varias decenas de premios, menciones y reconocimientos por su labor y contribuciones sociales, cívicas, deportivas y empresariales. Dinora Nazario, quien es Chef de Repostería del hotel Rincón of the Seas, profesora de repostería en la Pontificia Universidad Católica; y repostera por cuenta propia, nos dice que la perseverancia, el amor y la fe son ingredientes importantes es su receta familiar. “El mejor legado que puedo dejarle a mis hijos es que sean personas esforzadas y de provecho”. Mientras que Jesús Morales Caro, oficial de policía de Puerto Rico por 18 aňos, ferviente apasionado de la música, y fundador de “Broken Nights,” compaňía de servicios de sonido, música y DJ; piensa que su ejemplo es la mejor lección que puede ofrecerle a sus hijos. Y considera igualmente importantes, “La integridad y el aprender a luchar con todas las ganas para lograr los objetivos en la vida”.
Cristie Marie Rivera Nazario is the oldest child. She is 21 years old and currently studies with outstanding grades her 4th year in college for Business Administration with concentration in Human Resources. Since her early school days, Cristie has held a job and has been a leader, participating in many organizations such as the university chapters of the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce, the Pediatric Cancer Association and the Future Business Leaders of America among others; receiving several awards in regional competitions. At the age of 19 she bought her own car with the money she saved from work. When we asked her about what she thinks is her parents’ greatest legacy, she says: “I have inherited the quality of hard work, persistency, respect for others, and humility.”
Cristie Marie Rivera Nazario es la hija mayor. Cuenta actualmente con 21 años de edad y cursa con notas sobresalientes el 4to año universitario en Administración de Empresas con especialización en Recursos Humanos. Desde sus primeros grados escolares siempre ha trabajado y se ha destacado como líder, participando en las directivas de varias organizaciones entre las que se encuentran Los Capítulos Universitarios de la Cámara del Comercio de PR y La Asociación Pediátrica contra el Cáncer, Futuros líderes del Comercio Americano y más, siendo premiada en varias competencias regionales. A la edad de 19 se compró su propio automóvil con dinero que ella misma había ahorrado de su trabajo. Cuando le preguntamos cuál cree que ha sido la contribución más importante de sus padres, Cristie nos dice, “He heredado la cualidad de ser luchadora y persistente con lo que quiero, el respeto al prójimo y la humildad”.

Jesus H. Morales, is the oldest of the boys. He is 18 years old and studies his first year of College in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. He has belonged to the university chapter of the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce, the Future Business Leaders of America, among others. Since very young he has worked as DJ with Broken Nights, business founded by his father, and in some independent entertainment and music projects. Jean L. Morales Nazario and Jeydyliz Morales Nazario are 16 and 15 years old respectively. They attend the Manuel García Pérez High School in Rincón. They belong to the Future Business Leaders of America and are accomplished athletes; Jean in Basketball and Jeydyliz in Softball and Basketball. At a very early age Jean joined Broken Nights as DJ and Assistant. Both Jean and Jeydyliz recently won a statewide competition for the Future Business Leaders of America figuring as 2 of the top 4 contenders for the nationwide competition. Jean won for webpage design and Jedyliz for PSA production. They will be traveling to Texas this coming summer to participate in the nationwide competition.

Jesus H. Morales, es el mayor de los varones. Tiene 18 años de edad y cursa su primer año de universidad en Administración de Empresas con concentración en Contabilidad. Algunas de las organizaciones en la cuales ha participado incluyen, Capítulo Universitario de la Cámara de Comercio de PR y Futuros Líderes del Comercio Americano. Desde muy joven ha trabajado como DJ en Broken Nights, negocio fundado por su padre, y en varios proyectos musicales y de entretenimiento independientes. Jean L. Morales Nazario y Jeydyliz Morales Nazario tienen 16 y 15 años de edad respectivamente y estudian en Escuela Manuel García Pérez de Rincón. Ambos pertenecen a la organización Futuros líderes del Comercio Americano y son atletas destacados; Jean en el baloncesto y Jeydyliz en el Softball y Baloncesto. Desde muy corta edad, Jean se integró como Dj y ayudante en Broken Nights Dj’s. Recientemente ambos ganaron premios a nivel estatal de una competencia de los Futuros líderes del Comercio Americano, colocándose como dos de los cuatro contendientes compitiendo a nivel nacional. Jean ganó su reconocimiento en la categoría de diseño de página web y Jedyliz en la producción de anuncios de servicio público. Ellos viajaran este verano a Texas a participar en las competencias nacionales.
The Morales-Nazario family, through very hard work, recently completed the construction of their dream home, which took them five years to build. For this family, this is the way they get everything they set themselves to achieve: through hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice. But do not think this family is only about hard work and sacrifice! I have never met such a happy and loving family! When they have time, they choose to have fun, together, as a family. You can find them on road trips through the island, at some of Broken Nights gigs, at their younger children’s sports events, or taking a well-deserved vacation; always together, enjoying the fruits of this successful businesstheir family.

Marias, Rincón, PR, will be, not only one of the world’s greatest surfing destinations, but will also be the site of the RAMAS Festival, the best of international and Puerto Rican music and culture this island can offer.
Let’s start with the musical line-up: Yellowman; Gomba Jahabari; Calma Carmona; Mike Martin y Los Rootsticks, Fernando La Montana; Verayco, and more on Friday, the 22nd; Pirulo Y La Tribu; Henry Cole; La Tribu de Abrante with Bomba and Plena of Rincón; Fernandito Ferrer; Los Hijos de Puntas; The Jazz Beacon, and more, on Saturday the 23rd. “RAMAS has been totally diverse from its first year in 2016. Our feeling is that Puerto Rico is a melting pot that creates its own voice. It is super important for tourists who visit Puerto Rico to get the whole picture. Resident, or tourist, it is impossible to not be in awe of the amazing Puerto Rican people! March 22, the first day of RAMAS, is the anniversary of the abolition of slavery. Bomba and Plena are some of the most spiritual and influential musical genres in the Americas, and they will be at Ramas Festival. The musical line-up is extraordinary, but let’s not forget that we need to eat too! What about the food vendors, and how do they fit into the spirit of the festival? To enhance the musical experience, there will be local and international cuisine, all of it made by local Rincón restaurants. Because it is a festival, a lot of it will be hand held, but it will all be fresh, local, and made with care.

El 22 de marzo, el primer día del festival, se conmemora la abolición de la esclavitud. La Bomba y la Plena son algunos de los géneros musicales más espirituales e influyentes de las Américas y estarán en el Festival RAMAS. La lista de participantes es extraordinaria, pero recuerden que, ¡también tenemos que comer! ¿Y los vendedores de comida, cómo se integran al espíritu del festival? Para realzar la experiencia musical, habrá comida local e internacional, toda confeccionada por restaurantes locales de Rincón. Rincón is already home to some wonderful public art, and this year some great artists from Brooklyn will join RAMAS, as well as amazing local artists like Gemelo, John Henry and more... all contributing to the huge sense of cultural abundance and diversity that Puerto Rico and Rincón is known for.

An experience with baby turtles by Karen Moninger, owner and editor of El Coqui of Rincón 2004-2006 // February 11, 2019 --- Photos by Paul Norton “On the fourth day of our vacation in Rincón, we had planned to go kayaking with friends Audrey and Paul, but the winds came up, so we decided to walk the trail along Domes Beach instead. Travel is all about inviting the unexpected, and so we soon found ourselves enjoying the sand and the sea and the ancient remains of a train track that once skirted the island carrying sugar cane to market. Turning back, we noticed a few people on the trail who seemed to be looking at something in the sand. It was then that we saw baby turtles scurrying to reach the water. A hawksbill had laid its eggs at the edge of the trail and the moment of birth had arrived. Our hearts melted as the late morning sun beat down on the little creatures. We wondered how they could make such a long, difficult journey and wondered if some unaware hiker would mistakenly trample them. Thus, we spent the next two hours safeguarding the fountains of babies emerging from the sand. We all felt immensely satisfied to have missed the kayaking that day.“
La siguiente es una experiencia con tortugas bebés de Karen Moninger, quien fuera la dueňa y editora de El Coquí of Rincón durante los años 2004-2006 // 11 de febrero de 2019 --- Fotos de Paul Norton Durante el cuarto día de nuestras vacaciones en Rincón. Habíamos planificado irnos a remar en Kayak con nuestros amigos Audrey y Paul, pero el clima se tornó ventoso, así que decidimos caminar por la vereda de la Playa Domes. El viajar se trata de estar receptivos a lo inesperado y muy pronto nos hallamos disfrutando de la arena, el mar y las ruinas de una antigua vía de tren que una vez transportó caňa de azúcar al mercado. De regreso, notamos que unas cuantas personas miraban algo que había en la arena. Fue entonces cuando vimos unas pequeñas tortugas bebés escurriéndose para llegar al agua. Una tortuga carey había puesto sus huevos a la orilla del camino y el momento del nacimiento había llegado. Nuestros corazones se derritieron mientras el sol de media mañana se posaba sobre las pequeñas criaturas. Nos preguntamos cómo podrían realizar un viaje tan dificultoso sin que algún caminante desapercibido las pudiera pisotear. Así que pasamos las dos horas siguientes protegiendo la fuente de tortuguitas que emanaban de la arena. Todos nos sentimos inmensamente satisfechos por habernos perdido el viaje en Kayak ese día.

El Aura Art Gallery & Studios es una nueva, clara y brillante galería localizada entre los establecimientos Bajo Cero Ice Cream Place y Café Puya Coffee Shop (además de la pronta a inaugurarse librería El Coquí) en la Carretera 115 cerca de Costa Salud.
Beautiful, original works of art are being offered and enjoyed here, thanks to the vision of John Henry Ramos López and Miguel Feliciano. “We want to provide a space so that local and global artists can collaberate to build a strong audience here in Rincón,” says Ramos, who is an artist himself. His own original works are available in the gallery. “I also love to teach art and pass along the amazing experience of art to others,” he says. Aura Art Gallery & Studios offers a regular schedule of art classes.
Gracias a la visión de John Henry Ramos López y Miguel Feliciano, podremos disfrutar de hermosas obras de arte originales. “Deseamos ofrecer un espacio para que tanto artistas locales como visitantes se junten para desarrollar una audiencia aquí en Rincón”. Here you can see vividly painted street scenes from Puerto Rico’s past, including colorful vejigante characters on parade, by Samuel Garcia. There is a mystical portrait of a woman posed in a composition of vibrating shamanic energy by Cindia Pagan. Colorful abstracts, capturing nature: clouds, trees and flowers, plus drawings and prints of many more subjects, are all here. The gallery presents dozens of works in easyto-look-at surroundings by well known artists such as Dennis Bracero, Susan Olivera, Kelly Meagher, Bruce Burt, miggynyc and others. Joining the Aura display is a major new work by the Puerto Rican artist raised in New York, well-known in Rincón as jillo. Created on a large scale canvas, nearly five feet square, the work, called Turkish Carpet, lavishly displays the rich colors and dramatic textures jillo works with in her unique organic processes. Her minimalist, abstract fields are created using sun, wind, water and earth. This concept releases nature’s own artistic effects into her abstract earthscapes.

También, en exhibición, una nueva pieza a gran escala de una artista puertorriqueňa de Nueva York, mejor conocida como “jillo”. La pieza, titulada “Turkish Carpet” (alfombra turca), es en lienzo, y mide más de cinco pies cuadrados de dimensión. La pieza muestra espléndidamente colores ricos y texturas dramáticas en un proceso creador orgánico único. Sus espacios minimalistas los crea usando el sol, el viento, el agua y la tierra. Este concepto deja que la naturaleza se manifieste por sí misma en sus paisajes abstractos terrestres.
“I am inspired by power and life in nature,” says Jill Rodriguez ‘jillo’ Duffy. “I can feel it emerge in the different sands and shells I use. They each catch and express light or colors in their own ways.
“Me inspira el poder intrínseco en la vida y la naturaleza”. Nos dice Jill Rodriguez, “jillo,” Duffy. “Siento como se va manifestando y surgiendo de los diferentes tipos de arena y caracoles que utilizo. Cada uno captura y expresa la luz y los colores de un modo único y particular”.
Using her hands, often without a brush, jillo transforms colors, textures, shapes and flows into her artistic expressions. She uses natural elements of the island - sands, corals, clays, chalks - to create visual life on her canvases. “Turkish Carpet is made using the red clay of Rincón, the purple-gray clay of Utuado, the yellow clay of Lares, and the salt of Cabo Rojo,” says jillo. “I also used ground coral from Guanica and different sands from Rincón.”
Utilizando sus manos, a menudo sin pincel, “jillo” transforma los colores, las texturas y siluetas, dejándose llevar en la corriente de su expresión artística. Ella usa elementos naturales de la isla - arena, caracoles, barro, tiza, para recrear la vida en imágenes en el lienzo. “Turkish Carpet ha sido creada utilizando arcilla roja Rincón, el barro gris-purpúreo de Utuado, el barro amarillo de Lares, y la sal de Cabo Rojo. Aura Gallery is proud to exhibit this new work, along with all of its other art and artists. They have also collected a selection of fine original poetry books. They plan to host poetry readings in the near future as well. “This energetic, unique painting by jillo represents our aspirations for the gallery – to reach new heights of achievement and appreciation for art here in Puerto Rico,” says Feliciano. “The world is changing. Toast corn tortillas on an oiled skillet
Tueste las tortillas en una sartén aceitada
Whisk eggs with salt and pepper, then scramble (fried eggs work great too)
Bata los huevos con sal y pimienta y después los puede preparar revueltos o fritos
Assemble tostada – On a plate, place tortilla, then eggs, avocado, tomato salsa, chopped lettuce, cheese and/or sour cream.
Pepare la tostada-En un plato ponga la tortilla, los huevos, el aguacate, la salsa de tomate, la lechuga y el queso o la crema agria.
