Cover artist / El artista de la portada Alexis Nieves Our cover photographer is a native of Rincon. In addition to his skill as a photographer, Alexis does phone and computer repairs, maintenance and installations, as well as programing. The wedding of Joe Swider and his bride Mehtap (see story on page 68) was his first wedding assignment in Rincón. The wedding was held at Villa Cofresí shortly after Joe had won an award for his film Lighthouse to Lighthouse starring his father Rincón resident Joe Swider Sr. and his vintage automobile. Joe left the stage at the Rincon of the Seas and went down the road to Villa Cofresí where owner and wedding coordinator Sandra Caro had everything ready for a late afternoon wedding and romantic oceanside dinner. Joe salió del escenario del festival en el Rincón of the Seas y caminó un corto tramo hasta Villa Cofresí donde Sandra Caro, la dueña y coordinadora de bodas de Villa Cofresí lo tenía todo listo para una boda al atardecer con una cena romántica a la orilla del mar. ¡Qué día!

Welcome A one season surfing town has transformed itself into a year around destination for weddings and other special events. Rincón is enticing brides from as far away as Croatia and Australia. Thanks to the internet and our talented event planner’s websites, the destination wedding business is booming! We have it all; wedding and event planners, spectacular venues, lots of places for guests to stay at many price categories, caterers, photographers, florists, music, transportation, but most especially we have Rincón, our beautiful, warm and welcoming town. What we hear again and again is how much fun everyone has here in Rincón. There are so many things to do. Guests enjoy our laid back lifestyle which they find full of charm. What a great way for the town to expand its tourist season. In this issue we feature some of the new faces on the wedding planning scene. We’ve added suggestions for other kinds of events that can be held at our hotels and other venues. We also have a lovely story of a young girl’s Quinceañero, plenty of photographs of the brides, but mainly in this issue we are highlighting our beautiful town as a perfect place to visit for the most memorable time of your life.

I think of Anita Quintana as the doyenne of Rincón’s wedding planners. She began Ocasiones, her event planning business six years ago. She was the first private event planner in Rincón. As the number of people in the business increased, many mentored by Anita herself, her reputation and business remained secure due to her beautiful website and the rave reviews of her service. “I’d been an event planner in New York for about twenty years. When I got here I began to plan parties for family and friends as well as the Animal Rescue Foundation. The Story of a Great Wedding Relato de una gran boda
Jessica Del Mar grew up on a large farm in Pennsylvania. Jose “Pepi” Alfonso was originally from Miami. They have both lived and worked for many years in Rincón, Puerto Rico. “Pepi” owns and operates Makaira Sportfishing Charters. His 34’tournament rigged Contender goes out for half or full day charters and is well known in our area for the reliability of catching fish and for Pepi’s winning personality. Jessica moved here several years ago and has supported herself by working in Rincón’s best restaurants and managing rental properties. These days you can find her at the English Rose and Ode to the Elephants. If she looks familiar, it’s because she has probably waited on you somewhere here in town. When Jessica and Pepi decided to marry she had already spent most of the savings her parents had set aside for her wedding as a down payment on a house in Rincón. She’d been sure that a wedding wasn’t in her future. Now it was. How could they manage a wedding for 180 guests, a honeymoon in Bali for a month, a Meet and Greet party to introduce the guests to each other, invitations, guest gift bags, a hotel for the night of the wedding, a rehearsal dinner, flowers, decorations, music, food, transportation from guest houses and airports--have we left anything out? On a strict budget, Jessica knew she would have to do her Page 14

However, what really supported her and made this wedding possible, as well as beautiful, was friendship. Everyone she asked to help not only said yes, but went beyond her expectations to make this a magical day for the couple. We’re going to name people somewhat in the order Jessica remembered. “I couldn’t have done it without Allison West and her team. She was only supposed to have three “stations” of food. She ended by coordinating everything. Allison stepped in and solved every problem we had. And, of course, her food was wonderful.” Jessica’s idea was that she wanted her wedding to be informal and free-form, fun for herself, Pepi and all the guests. From the very beginning of the event there was food and drink; tables were set, but there was no formal seating arrangement. “The food was amazing,” said Jessica. “The roast pig arrived before I did, and no one waited. That was fine with me,” she said with a laugh. They rented the Horned Dorset Primavera for the night and the bride and her bridesmaids got dressed and had some photos taken there. Hair and makeup stylist, Newshaw Barati, who works out of 413 Salon in Puntas turned Jessica into a Carole Lombard/1940’s movie star for the occasion. Then they were driven to Barb and Al Lugo’s house, “Casa Brisas Frescas” in Puntas by Pedrito Tours, who handled most of the transportation needs for the wedding. Barb and Al are longtime friends of the couple and let them use their house for the wedding and party. The bridesmaids arranged the wild flower and daisy bouquets and center pieces with flowers that Jessica bought in bulk from Royal Flowers in Mayagüez. Pepi’s aunt Aleida made her bridal bouquet of yellow roses. Bridesmaid Amy Bloom worked at the wedding site until an hour before the ceremony. She graciously loaned tables and chairs she had in storage from The Spot. Jessica had worked at The Spot for many years until it closed. The tables painted by local artist Paul O’ Dell were reminders of this happy time in her life. Girlfriend Robin Kaplan, who makes desserts and baked goods for several places in Rincón was asked if she could make a simple yellow cake as a wedding “cupcake”. Love birds floated above the cupcake and a torch ginger sat beside it on one of the lace doilies that Jessica had ordered on eBay to decorate the tables. The cupcake was a work of art.

El novio y los caballeros fueron a Banana Republic en Barceloneta y compraron sus trajes. “Resultó más barato comprar los trajes que alquilarlos. Eran unos trajes muy buenos y la tienda llamó a todas sus tiendas en la isla para conseguir las tallas que necesitábamos y nos los envió”. Dijo Jessica. La fiesta de presentación se celebró en Villa Cofresí durante el Happy Hour. “Se supone que hubiera sido de 4-7 pm”. dijo Jessica sonriendo, “Pero nadie se fue. ¡Tú sabes lo buena gente que son los camareros de Villa Cofresí! Esa fue la primera vez que nuestras familias se conocieron. Y no pudo haber resultado mejor”. Jessica y su suegra Lili, prepararon los bolsos de recordatorio y éstos no solo incluyeron botellas de ron para los hombres, koozies, flip flops y abanicos para las mujeres, pero también copias de el Coquí of Rincón. “Lo mejor de haber incluido un ejemplar de el Coquí fue que le ayudó a mis invitados que nunca habían visitado el pueblo y les dio idea de qué hacer y saber dónde estaba todo. Me ahorró un montón de llamadas telefónicas, lo cual aprecié Pepi, Jessica, Barb & Al Lugo

Brian Farías, a friend from New Jersey who, in addition to being an ordained minister owns Farías Surf and Sport, married them under the arbor decorated with fabric and flowers. The groom and groomsmen went to Banana Republic in the Barceloneta Outlets and bought their suits. “It was cheaper than renting them. They were really nice suits and the store called all around the island to get the sizes we needed shipped to us,” said Jessica. The Meet and Greet party was held at Villa Cofresí at Happy Hour. “It was just supposed to be from 4-7 p.m.,” laughed Jessica, “but no one left. You know how nice the bartenders are at the the Cofresí? This was the first time our families met. It just couldn’t have been better.” Jessica and her mother in law, Lili, made the guest gift totes and included not only bottles of rum for the men, koozies, flip flops and fans for the ladies, but also a copy of the el Coquí of Rincón. “The best thing about including the Coquí was that it helped give my guests who were new to town some idea of what to do and where things were. It saved me a lot of phone calls which I appreciated,” she said emphatically. Rehearsal dinner was at Das Alpen where Jessica worked during its first year. She was able to get 80 people seated to enjoy the Northern Italian specialties she chose for the night. “Some people sat at the bar, and I rented a couple of long tables, but everyone fit

Joel Roumain, padre de un amigo de la infancia de Pepi y dueño de Roumain Catering preparó una paella para 180 personas, así como un asopao; éste último honrando la tradición de ofrecer un plato (de sopa/guiso) de pollo o mariscos a las 2am para que los invitados tengan energía para seguir fiesteando.

Latin Spirit, a San Juan band that Jessica had heard at the Ritz Carleton, was the live music. Phil Painter, a friend from Rincón, was the DJ. The music, dancing and eating was continuous! Pepi’s cousin, Ines Revilla is a professional photographer in Miami but she was warned that there were to be no formal family photos. Jessica’s philosophy about what she wanted for her wedding was that everyone – especially the bride and groom – should relax and have fun. When you plan your own wedding and attend to the millions of details that go into giving a large party, there are always things you wish you could have done differently. But looking back and wanting to change things is just a waste of time as far as Jessica is concerned. She is still awed by the great spirit of friendship that was the hallmark of her day. She said, “No matter what may or may not have gone wrong, whether your “vision” of the wedding turned out to be exactly what you wanted it to be, from the moment you walk in, these are details that only you know. The only thing that is important is enjoy your party. That is what I wanted for my guests and for Pepi and me. I just loved my wedding. Everyone did.”
La banda Latin Spirit, directamente de San Juan, la cual Jessica había visto tocar en Ritz Carleton, amenizó la fiesta. Phil Painter, un amigo de Rincón, era el DJ. ¡La música, el baile y la comida eran continuos! Ines Revilla, la prima de Pepi, es una fotógrafa profesional en Miami. Le advirtieron que no iba a haber fotos familiares formales. La idea de Jessica para su boda era que todos, especialmente los novios, estuvieran relajados y se divirtieran. Cuando uno planifica su propia boda y tiene que tomar en cuenta los millones de detalles que conllevan el ofrecer una boda grande, siempre hay cosas que hubieras deseado hacer de forma diferente. Pero en lo que respecta a Jessica, mirar hacia atrás y querer cambiar las cosas es una pérdida de tiempo. Ella aún está emocionada por el gran espíritu de amistad que fue el distintivo de su día. Ella dijo, “No importa cuantas cosas hayan salido bien o mal en ese día, o si tu “visión” de tu boda se haya realizado como tu deseabas, desde el momento en que tú haces tu entrada, estos son detalles que sólo tú los sabes. Lo único importante es que disfrutes de tu fiesta. Eso era lo que yo deseaba para mis invitados, para Pepi y para mí. Yo adoré mi boda. Y todo el mundo también”.

Allison West Allison West bought the domain name Rincón Events six years ago when she first decided to make Rincón, Puerto Rico her home. This is an example of how this young woman operates. First there is the dream, and then the study and perfecting of the craft. Finally when the time is right and the way is clear, she makes the dream a reality. While she was working on her Rincón Events idea, Allison opened her now famous Sushi and Yakatori Grill at the Pool Bar in Puntas. Two years ago she launched a new venture called The Grill@ Pool Bar. The Grill is open from December through April and serves, said Allison “the kind of food I like to eat – fresh fruit, vegetables and salads, all with my own Asian twist.” In addition to the two restaurants, she became a sought-after caterer and had her own catering business. When asked how she trained for this new career, she told me that her mother was her greatest inspiration. Allison’s mother was a school teacher in Georgia. She loved food, cooking and decorating. When she found a beautiful farm house in the country, she decided to turn it into a business. She stopped teaching and opened the Four Oaks Manor which became a successful venue for parties, weddings, and other events. Allison and her brother, Ryan West (who owns Lucky 13 on Carr.115) helped their mother with the new business which is still run by the family today. Former Rincón resident and Event Designer, Gloria Driscoll was one of Rincón’s busiest event planners. Allison was her exclusive caterer. During the time they worked together, Allison watched Gloria and studied the business of event planning by being immersed in it. She learned the venues, the sub-contractors, who

Hace seis años Allison West compró el nombre de Rincón Events para su sitio web cuando decidió hacer del pueblo de Rincón su hogar permanente. Este es un ejemplo de cómo funciona esta joven mujer. Primero existe el sueño, y luego el estudio y el perfeccionamiento de las destrezas. Finalmente, cuando el tiempo es propicio y los caminos están despejados, ella convierte su sueño en realidad. Mientras seguía desarrollando su idea de Rincón Events, Allison inauguró su ya famoso Sushi & Yakatori Grill en el Pool Bar en Puntas. Hace dos años inauguró una nueva empresa llamada The Grill@ Pool Bar. The Grill está abierto desde diciembre hasta abril y sirve, según Allison “el tipo de comida que me gusta comer-frutas frescas, vegetales y ensalada, todos con mi toque asiático”. En adición a sus dos restaurantes, ella se convirtió en una codiciada proveedora de servicios de catering y tenía su propio negocio ofreciendo este servicio. Cuando le preguntamos cómo se preparó para esta nueva carrera, ella nos dijo que la mayor inspiración la recibió de su madre que era maestra de escuela en Georgia. Ella amaba la comida, cocinar y decorar. Cuando encontró una hermosa finca en el campo, decidió convertirla en un negocio. Ella dejó el magisterio e inauguró el Four Oaks Manor, que se convirtió en un establecimiento muy exitoso para la realización de fiestas, bodas y otros eventos. Rincón is lucky to add another talented woman to its event planners. When asked about her favorite wedding this year, Allison chose Rincón residents Danny Shields and Jennifer Beck’s wedding this year at Caracol Ché. The Shields live in New Jersey and Ensenada, Rincón. Sarah Rosario of All Events was the overall coordinator. Allison did the catering. The wedding was a great success.

It remains a favorite with brides and wedding planners. Stephanie Ramírez continues to be Rincón Beach Resort’s in-house wedding and event planner, but she is happy to work with independent designers to make sure that every Rincon Beach Resort event is a success. In this issue we decided to feature some of the other activities that can be held at the Resort’s new convention center. The hotel now includes a ballroom/meeting rooms which can be divided into three separate spaces or opened into one huge banquet hall.

More than Weddings / Más que Bodas A tropical setting - blue ocean, luscious vegetation, clear sky, and the most amazing sunsets in the world serve as the perfect backdrop for an ideal destination wedding like the wedding of Alicia Alers & Adam Bond celebrated last September. It was designed by Anita Quintana of Ocasiones, with photographs by Brenda González. However, this astounding landscape does not need to be limited to weddings. Any event can take place amidst the beauty and the relaxing atmosphere of Rincón. “It is true that people think mostly about weddings when we talk about a destination venue, however, there are many events that do take place throughout the year that are definitely much more than that.” said Ms. Lourdes Martínez, Director for Sales and Marketing of the Rincón Beach Resort. The hotel has been the site for private functions such as birthday parties, anniversaries, class reunions, proms, retreats, quinceañeros (Puerto Rican version of a Sweet Sixteen celebration), business and corporate events, and more. Last year The Rincón Beach Resort was the site for the proms for SESO School and the Christian Academy. For these two events both schools made it an extended affair in which most of the students and their families stayed in the resort for two nights with the graduation taking place in the morning and the prom in the evening. On the second day there was a beach party. I noticed Ms. Martínez’ big smile as she spoke of SESO’s event, and she then said, “Well, it was quite a special occasion, since my daughter was a member of that graduating class.”

Ambas escuelas celebraron un evento extendido donde la mayoría de los estudiantes y sus familias se hospedaron por dos noches. Martínez cuando nos habló de las actividades de SESO y me dijo, “Bueno era una ocasión muy especial ya que mi hija era parte de esa clase graduanda”.

Fabiola’s Dream El sueño de Fabiola Written & Translated by Sandra Nía Rodríguez
“I had dreamed about having a Quinceañero since I was a little girl. I wanted to dress like a princess, celebrate with my friends and family and have an unforgettable evening,” said Fabiola Valentín Carrero, daughter of Prof. José Valentín and Mrs. Yolanda Carrero. She was speaking about the traditional celebration that is similar to a Sweet Sixteen or Debutante Ball, but with religious elements and, in Puerto Rico, with some traditions that are distinctly our own. A Quinceañero is the celebration of a girl’s 15th birthday that marks her leaving childhood and entering adolescence. It dates back to the ancient rites of passage in Pre-Columbian cultures. With the advent of Judeo-Christianity in the new world, it had adopted some of the rituals of the Catholic Church, taking unique characteristics in the different Latin American countries and Latino communities throughout the United States. Fabiola’s fabulous Quinceañero almost didn’t happen. Her parents thought she should wait a year and celebrate with a Sweet Sixteen party instead. Fabiola was not too happy with that decision. “Here in Puerto Rico you celebrate your 15th birthday, and that’s what I wanted,” she said. A month before her birthday, her uncle Francisco Carrero, who was in very ill health, decided that what he really wanted at that Page 42

Nos dijo Fabiola Valentín Carrero, hija del Prof. José Valentín y la Sra. Yolanda Carrero. Fabiola hablaba de la fiesta tradicional muy similar a la de Sweet Sixteen o a la Gala de Debutantes, pero con elementos religiosos, y que aquí en Puerto Rico lo celebramos con algunas tradiciones que son muy nuestras. El quinceañero es la celebración del cumpleaños no. 15 de las niñas y que marca su transición de niña a adolescente. Se remonta a los antiguos ritos de pubertad en las sociedades pre-colombinas. Con la llegada de la religión judeo-cristiana al nuevo mundo, esta celebración ha adoptado algunos rituales de la iglesia católica y ha desarrollado características únicas en los diferentes países latinoamericanos y en las comunidades hispanoparlantes en los Estados Unidos. El fabuloso quinceañero de Fabiola por poco ni se celebra. Sus padres habían pensado que ella debía esperar un año más y tener una fiesta de Sweet Sixteen. Fabiola no estaba muy feliz con esta decisión. “Aquí en Puerto Rico uno celebra sus quince y eso era lo que yo quería”. Nos dijo. Un mes antes de su cumpleaños, Francisco Carrero, tío de Fabiola, y quién

However, even with her uncle Francisco financing most of the event, the family still had only a very short time to put together the very elaborate party that Fabiola had dreamed of for so many years. The whole Valentín-Carrero family rallied together and in one month they created Fabiola’s dream Quinceañero with Mardi Gras as its theme. Her mother and father made the decorations which consisted of gigantic masks, working lamp posts to light the hall, drapes, centerpieces and even party favors. They recycled decorations from other family functions and got Uncle Francisco’s vintage car. Aunt Magda designed the invitations, and Aunt Kimmy provided the food, and so on. Fabiola knew what kind of dress she wanted. After checking with local seamstresses, looking in all stores in the area and with time running out, Fabiola and her parents went to San Juan where she found her dream dress of green satin, her shoes, jewelry, and of course, her crown. With the Santa Rosa de Lima Parochial Hall rented and the cake, music, dress, decorations and everything else settled, Fabiola was ready to have her Quinceañero. “For the remaining days before my party every evening after school, I would try my whole Quinceañera outfit,” she said with a big smile. “She drove us crazy,” said her father with an equally big smile. “We could hardly wait for the day!” When the day finally arrived Fabiola got the royal treatment with beautiful make-up and hair by Mingo from Barrio Calvache. “My brother José Valentín and my cousin José Carrero were my escorts,” said Fabiola. “I still get goosebumps when I remember. Everything was perfect. My Quinceañero started with a mass in the Catholic Chapel in Barrio Río Grande. During the mass, I received blessings from the priest and the congregation prayed for my happiness and safety. They celebrated me with applause,” said Fabiola. “After mass we stopped at the Lighthouse for pictures. Then we arrived at the hall which was decorated so beautifully. Everyone was there. Even one of my aunts came from the states just for the occasion.” During the Quinceañero ceremony her mother placed the crown on Fabiola’s hair, her grandmother gave her Fabiola gets into Uncle Francisco’s car

estaba delicado de salud, decidió que lo que él deseaba en ese momento de su vida era ayudar a Fabiola a realizar su sueño. Sin embargo, aún con su tío cubriendo la mayoría de los gastos, la familia solo tenía muy poco tiempo para planificar la fiesta elaborada con la que Fabiola había soñado por tantos años. Toda la familia Valentín-Carrero aunó sus fuerzas y en un mes crearon el quinceañero de los sueños de Fabiola con el tema de Mardi Gras. Los padres de Fabiola confeccionaron las decoraciones que consistían de máscaras gigantes, faroles que alumbraban el salón de fiestas, cortinas, centros de mesa, y hasta recordatorios. Ellos reciclaron decoraciones de otras funciones familiares y usaron el carro antiguo del tío Francisco. Su tía Magda diseñó las invitaciones. Su tía Kimmy le regaló la comida, y más. Fabiola sabía exactamente como era el traje de sus sueños. Después de consultar con varias costureras locales, y de buscar en las tiendas del área, y ya casi sin tiempo, Fabiola y sus padres se fueron a San Juan donde encontró un traje verde satinado, sus zapatos, las prendas y por supuesto, su corona. Con el salón parroquial de la Iglesia Santa Rosa de Lima ya alquilado, el bizcocho ordenado, la música, el traje y las decoraciones en su lugar, Fabiola estaba ya lista para celebrar su quinceañero. “Durante todos los días siguientes que precedieron a mi fiesta yo llegaba de la escuela y me probaba todo mi atuendo de quinceañera”. Nos dijo Fabiola con una gran sonrisa. “Nos tenía locos”. Nos dijo su padre con una sonrisa igualmente jovial. “Estábamos super deseosos de que llegara ese día”. Cuando finalmente llegó el día, Fabiola fue tratada como una reina y Mingo del Barrio Calvache le realizó el maquillaje y le arregló su cabello hermosamente. “Mi hermano José Valentín y mi primo José Carrero fueron mis escoltas”. Dijo Fabiola. “Todavía se me eriza la piel cuando me acuerdo. Todo estaba perfecto. Mi quinceañero comenzó con una fiesta en la Capilla Católica del Barrio Río Grande. Durante la misa, el sacerdote me bendijo y la congregación rezó por mi felicidad y mi seguridad y me aplaudieron”. Dijo Fabiola. “Después de la misa fuimos al Faro a tomarnos fotos. Y después llegamos al Page 43

Fortunately, Fabiola’s uncle recovered and he is still sharing the beautiful memories of his wonderful gift to his niece. However, if you think the Valentín-Carrero family is done with Quinceañeros, you are wrong! Fabiola is already planning her cousin’s Gabriella Carrero’s Quinceañero. And though it is two years away, Fabiola is ready. Is it that we have a new event planner in the making in Rincón? Soon we’ll know!

Y aunque éste tomará lugar en dos años, Fabiola ya está lista. ¿Será que ya tendremos una nueva coordinadora de eventos en Rincón? ¡Lo sabremos pronto!

Sarah Rosario All Events In July 2011 Sarah Rosario celebrated the six month anniversary of her event planning business All Events by giving a thank you luncheon for those people who had supported her and were instrumental in her success. Event planning is a cooperative business. The more support you have from the community and your sub-contractors, the better will be the result of your event. Sarah acknowledged this in her welcome to the guests. Before she was an event planner, Sarah was a private chef and caterer. Before that, this mother of two beautiful girls, earned her living as an emergency paramedic – a skill that has come in handy in her present business where the unexpected is routine. Sarah worked at Caracol Ché as a private chef and as a caterer for other wedding planners. Owner Carlos Leizerowicz noted her professionalism and pleasant manner and the two became friends. He encouraged her to take the next step and begin an Page 48

David González regarding his proposed wedding at Caracol Ché. David González and Theresa Swanson had already reserved Caracol Ché, but David was looking for someone here in Rincón to help him coordinate the wedding that the couple who lived in New Orleans, Louisiana had so carefully designed. “Grooms today seem to be more interested in the wedding details than I had imagined,” said Sarah. “But David was really involved. He was my only contact for the wedding plans,” she said. “He sent me detailed instructions and he even shipped the tablecloths and decorations they wanted to use. Maybe it was his military background, but the wedding went off like a well-organized military maneuver with every detail checked off,” she continued. Sarah did the catering for the event as well as the coordinating. She had begun experimenting with candy stations and this one was made special by the addition of a chocolate fountain as well as fruit and cheese platters for the more health conscious. En cuanto All Events se hizo realidad, Carlos le envió a Sarah un correo electrónico del Teniente de la marina David González en relación a su boda a celebrarse en CaracolChé. David González y Theresa Swanson ya habían reservado Caracol Ché, pero David estaba buscando a alguien en Rincón que le ayudara a coordinar la boda que la pareja residente en Nueva Orleans en el estado de Louisiana había diseñado cuidadosamente. “Hoy día los novios parecen estar más interesados en los detalles de la boda de lo que yo me había imaginado”. Nos dijo Sarah. “Pero David estaba verdaderamente envuelto. El era mi único contacto en lo que a los planes para la boda se respectaba”. Añadió. “El me envió instrucciones detalladas y hasta me envió por correo los manteles y decoraciones que deseaban usar”. Probablemente fue por su entrenamiento en la fuerzas armadas, pero la boda transcurrió como una muy bien organizada maniobra militar, con todos los detalles realizados al pie de la letra”. Sarah preparó la comida para el evento, y también realizó la coordinación. Ella había comenzado a experimentar con las “estaciones” de postres y en esta boda ella añadió un toque especial al ofrecer una fuente de chocolate combinada también con bandejas de frutas y queso para aquellos conscientes de su salud. Rincón of the Seas Two Weddings / Dos Bodas The two young women who greeted me in their office at Rincon of the Seas have been with the hotel since its opening. Lizandra Ayala first worked in the accounting department. Jessica Ramos, with a degree in hotel management, began in the Deco Restaurant. It is the hotel policy to promote from within whenever it is possible. The two women had other supervisory jobs before taking their present positions in the Sales Department. They are event coordinators and not wedding planners. They work to guarantee that any event held at the hotel will be exactly as promised from the welcome to the goodbye. As they described the way their hotel handles weddings specifically, it seemed to me what they were describing was something like an a la carte menu. There is something for everyone and every price range. If you would like to use this five star hotel for your event, call the office and meet with Lizandra or Jessica. You can describe your budget and your vision of the event or wedding. They will then recommend that you either use one of the wedding planners on their list, or if you are planning something more modest and want to do most of the work yourself, they will give you a choice of people that are recommended because of their reliability and expertise. Las dos jóvenes mujeres que me recibieron en su oficina del Rincón of the Seas han trabajado con el hotel desde sus inicios. Lizandra Ayala primero trabajó en el departamento de contabilidad. Jessica Ramos, quién posee un grado en administración de hoteles, comenzó en el Royal Palm Café Restaurant. Es política del hotel ofrecer los ascensos, en la manera posible, a los empleados existentes primero. Ambas ocupaban puestos de supervisión antes de trabajar en el departamento de ventas. Su trabajo es el de coordinación de eventos y no de planificación de bodas. and drink. If you want to have fifty people and choose a $26.00 per person dinner and an open bar, there is a specific price for that. It doesn’t matter whether you want the guests in the ballroom or the beach. The price will be the same. The prices go up according to the menu – i.e. filet mignon vs roast chicken. The same formula is used for all events whether it is a Quinceañero, baby shower, rehearsal dinner or corporate event. When asked for an example of widely disparate events, they immediately thought of the wedding last June of Alexandra Pérez and Luisam Tarrats where the wedding planner created an acrylic aisle for the bride to walk to the altar. “It looked as if she was walking on a glass floor to the ocean,” said Lizandra. Cuando le pedimos un ejemplo de eventos diametralmente opuestos celebrados en sus facilidades, ellas inmediatamente pensaron en una boda de Alexandra Pérez y Luisam Tarrats celebrada en junio del año pasado en donde la coordinadora de la boda creó un pasillo con piso de cristal para que la novia desfilara. “Parecía como si estuviera caminando sobre un piso de cristal hacia su altar en la playa”. Nos comentó Lizandra. La responsable fue Carmen Méndez, coordinadora de bodas de la empresa Eventos* de Cabo Rojo. La boda fue grande, elaborada y extremadamente hermosa. Muchos de los invitados se hospedaron en el hotel durante ese fin de semana. “La otra boda se celebrará en la playa el 28 de abril”. Nos dijo Jessica. Idamaris Lugo y su novio Iván Cabán le permitieron a Alexandra Muñiz, del personal de El Coquí, fotografiarles. La familia inmediata de los novios fueron los testigos en la ceremonia matinal a la orilla de la playa. Simple o elegante, grande o pequeña, usted puede pedir lo que desea y Jessica y Lizandra se encargarán de ayudarle a realizarlo.

Many of the guests used the hotel facilities for the weekend. “On April 28 there will be a small family wedding on the beach, “said Jessica. El Coquí ‘s Alexandra Muñiz was allowed to take photographs of the lovely bride, Idamaris Lugo and her groom, Iván Cabán. The early morning beachside ceremony was witnessed by the immediate family. Mary Gilmartin Tastebuds PR
What do you do when you are finished raising your children and you want a new life? If you are Mary Gilmartin, an interior designer from Northern Monmouth County, New Jersey, you begin to look for a warmer climate and a place where you could work. Mary’s three children, her step-children, friends and neighbors had all been to Rincón to surf. On her first visit to the town in 2007, she headed to Island West Properties and asked to see what they had available to buy. She knew no one in Rincón except but her real estate agent Juanita Guedea. She found a property she liked, went back to New Jersey, sold her house and returned to Rincón to buy her present home in Calvache. Then, as any good decorator would do, she completely renovated it. Mary assumed that her excellent renovation and new knowledge of contractors and sub-contractors would bring clients for her interior design services. This was not to be. The practice of using an interior designer was not enough of a tradition to earn a living in Rincón. What else could she do? In New Jersey she had also arranged and catered parties for friends. Her tables and decorations bespoke her expertise as a designer. Her interest in cooking began at a very young age. One of her earliest lessons was from an Italian neighbor who showed thirteen-year-old Mary the secret of her delicious lasagna (basil and cinnamon). Mary chose a name for her new catering

¿Qué haces cuando ya has criado a tus hijos y deseas comenzar una nueva vida? Si eres Mary Gilmartin, una diseñadora de interiores del Condado Northern Monmouth de Nueva Jersey, comienzas a buscar un clíma cálido y dónde trabajar. Los tres hijos de Mary, sus hijastros, sus amigos y vecinos habían estado en Rincón practicando el surfismo. Durante su primera visita en el año 2007, ella se dirigió a la oficina de Island West Properties para investigar sobre las propiedades que tenían a la venta. Ella no conocía a nadie en Rincón excepto a Juanita Guedea, su agente de bienes raíces. Encontró una propiedad a su gusto, regresó a Nueva Jersey, vendió su casa y regresó a Rincón para comprar la casa en la que reside en Calvache. En Nueva Jersey ella había organizado y ofrecido servicios de catering para fiestas de amistades. Las mesas y decoraciones que preparaba

Anita Quintana of Ocasiones hired her and loved her work. Like so many before her, catering led to her new career as wedding planner or coordinator. She signed up for www. weddingwire.com (see some of her 5 star reviews on that site) and began to build an international clientele. Thanks to wedding planners like Mary, Rincón is becoming popular with couples from all over the world. If you give Mary a problem, she is likely to come up with a creative solution. For the Tammy Kukal/James Barton wedding in February, the wedding party and guests were all staying on the beach at Sunset Paradise. The beach in front of the vacation rental wasn’t right for the size of the wedding and the bride and groom felt it was too public. They needed transportation to get the entire wedding party and friends to their chosen venue, Steps Beach in the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. Mary went to the Municipality and asked if the Rincón Trolley was available to rent. The Municipality agreed and the trolley, decorated with a “just married” sign was used for transportation to the ceremony. Mary uses local Puerto Rican chefs for her Criollo cuisine, local artists to help with decoration, and provides work for young people working in this popular field. An example of her “I can do anything” spirit was demonstrated by finishing her busiest month of work with her left arm in a cast due to a fall on a slippery tile floor. “What are you going to do,” said Mary with a laugh, “you’ve got to go on. People are counting on you.” That is the attitude every wedding planner worth hiring should have!

Mary acudió al municipio y preguntó si el Trolley de Rincón estaba disponible para alquiler. El municipio accedió y el Trolley, decorado con el letrero que leía “ Recién Casados” se utilizó para el transporte a la ceremonia. Mary utiliza chefs puertorriqueños para su menú criollo, artistas locales le ayudan con la decoración, y además le provee empleo a jóvenes que trabajan en este campo tan popular. Un ejemplo de su espíritu de “Puedo hacer cualquier cosa” se puso en evidencia cuando finalizó su mes más ocupado de trabajo con uno de sus brazos enyesados debido a una caída. “¿Y qué se supone que hagas?,” dijo Mary sonriendo, “Tienes que seguir hacia adelante. La gente cuenta contigo”. ¡Esa es la actitud que todos los coordinadores de bodas que valga la pena contratar debieran tener!

Film Festival Marriages Two Weddings / Dos Bodas The Rincón International Film Festival fifth year was a resounding success. Ninety-one films were screened and of those, forty-three were films about Puerto Rico or made by Puerto Rican filmmakers. RIFF has partnered with several Latino film festivals in the U.S. mainland as well as the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, and Enfoque, a local international Christian film festival. These partnerships offer a chance for collaboration and offer inspiration to our talented youth. There were many evenings with a full house. There were filmmakers attending from New York, Seattle, Canada and great many from Puerto Rico. It produced tremendous publicity for Rincón. There were wonderful venues with good food, a great raffle and even back-up plans for rainy nights. The Rincón International Film Festival is a tribute to the hard

El Festival de Cine Internacional de Rincón fue un éxito rotundo. Se exhibieron 91 filmes, y de esos, 43 eran películas sobre Puerto Rico, o realizadas por cineastas puertorriqueños. En adición a su asociación con varios festivales de cine latino en los Estados Unidos, RIFF también se ha unido a la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Mayagüez, y a Enfoque, un festival local de cine cristiano internacional. Estas asociaciones ofrecen una oportunidad para la cooperación e inspiran a nuestra talentosa juventud. En muchas noches tuvieron la casa llena con cineastas visitantes de Nueva York, Seattle, Canadá y muchos de Puerto Rico. El festival le produjo tremenda publicidad al pueblo de Rincón, con exhibiciones en establecimientos maravillosos que sirvieron comida deliciosa,

una excelente rifa y hasta planes alternos para las noches lluviosas. El Festival de Cine Internacional de Rincón es un tributo al arduo trabajo del personal dirigido por Doug Lantz y Julio Cabrera. Ya que este es nuestro ejemplar sobre las bodas, es apropiado que compartamos algunas historias al respecto. Durante el primer festival de RIFF en el 2008, el cineasta alemán Marcin Glowacki, presentó su corto de comedia “The Stewardess” (La azafata). El vino acompañado de su novia Grit. Marcin y su novia se enamoraron de Rincón y decidieron casarse de improviso, aquí en Rincón. Doug Lantz y su tía Francia fueron los testigos. Este año “A Father’s Plea”, (Plegaria de un padre), el nuevo cortometraje de Marcin, ganó el premio como el Mejor Cortometraje Documental Internacional del 2012. Es posible que el filme haya sido inspirado por su hijita de tres años. Joe Swider y su novia Mehtap, también navegaron las olas nupciales de RIFF. Ellos se casaron en Villa Cofresí minutos después que Joe aceptara su premio Spirit of Puerto Rico (Espíritu de Puerto Rico) por su cortometraje, “Lighthouse to Lighthouse”, (De faro a faro). working staff headed by directors Doug Lantz and Julio Cabrera. Since this is our wedding issue, it is only fitting that we share some wedding stories. During RIFF’s first year in 2008, German Filmmaker, Marcin Glowacki, presented his short comedy film “The Stewardess.” He was accompanied by his girlfriend Grit. They both fell in love with Rincón and decided to have an impromptu wedding in town. Doug Lantz and his aunt Francia were the witnesses. This year Marcin’s new short film, “A Father’s Plea”, won Best Int’l Short Doc. The film was perhaps inspired by his three year old daughter. Joe Swider and his bride Mehtap, also rode the RIFF wedding wave. They were married at Villa Cofresí, minutes after Joe had accepted his RIFF Spirit of Puerto Rico Award for his short film, “Lighthouse to Lighthouse.” Two filmmakers from the UPRM film program, are talking to the Lazy Parrot’s wedding coordinator Amy Rizert about their future wedding plans.
