Welcome I’m not going to lie. I was a bit intimidated when I began working on my first wedding issue. I was unfamiliar with weddings, having only been to two in my entire life. I knew the basics: a bride and groom, flowers, cake, music. But there is much more that goes on behind the scenes that I was unaware of. Luckily with the help of some friends, we were able to make our annual wedding issue a success. In this issue, Sandra Rodríguez shares her recipe for a successful wedding and provides quotes from a photographer, a bride, a food artist, a property manager at Tres Palmas Inn & Villas, and two wedding planners. Cassandra Raff fills us in on the latest wedding trends on page 22 and provides some advice for brides planning their wedding in Rincón on page 38. When it comes to flowers, Leslie LaRonga is the expert, in her story she tells us of the importance of choosing local flowers for your special day. Enjoy!
Bienvenido No voy a mentirles. Estaba un poco intimidada cuando comencé a trabajar con mi primera edición de bodas. Estaba des familiarizada con las bodas, habiendo asistido a sólo dos en toda mi vida. Conocía de lo básico, una novia y un novio, flores, el bizcocho, y música. No obstante, hay muchísimas cosas más que ocurren detrás de los preparativos de una boda y sobre ello yo no tenía conocimiento alguno. Por suerte y con la ayuda de algunos amigos pudimos lograr que nuestra edición anual de bodas fuera un éxito. En esta edición Sandra Rodríguez comparte con nosotros su receta para tener una boda exitosa y nos provee citas de fotógrafos, novias, artistas culinarios, gerente de la propiedad Tres Palmas Inn & Villas, y dos coordinadores de bodas. Cassandra Raff nos pone al día en las últimas tendencias para bodas en la página 22 y nos provee algunos consejos para aquellas novias que estén planeando tener su boda en Rincón, esto en la página 38. Cuando de flores se trata, Leslie LaRonga es la experta, en su historia ellos nos cuenta sobre la importancia de elegir flores locales para el día especial de su boda. ¡Disfruten!

Vanessa Vargas is a Puerto Rico Destination Wedding and Lifestyle photographer. Based in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, and covering weddings in Rincon and other gorgeous locations on the island. Born and raise on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, Vanessa Vargas discovered her love for photography while in college but it wasn’t until her move to Mexico that she began her destination wedding photography career capturing the special moments of Cancun and the Riviera Maya visitors, from weddings and engagements sessions to family reunions. She continued her photography studies while living in Cancun at Centro de Creatividad Fotografica del Caribe and participated in two collective expositions. Her work has been published in US wedding blogs like: Bajan Wed, Love and Wander, The Knot, Melissa Heart Weddings, Beach Bride and Caribbean Bride Magazine.

When thinking about weddings, we always tend to imagine the delicate young bride in her beautiful white gown walking down the aisle to the melodic notes of the wedding march. She walks slowly and excitedly towards her beloved, whom she is about to join in marriage. There is a display of smiles intermingled with tears. Everything is beautiful, harmonious, and perfect.
Al pensar en las bodas, siempre tendemos a imaginar a la joven y delicada novia vistiendo su hermoso vestido blanco caminando hacia el altar al ritmo de las notas melódicas de la marcha nupcial. Ella camina lentamente y llena de emoción hacia su ser amado con quien está a punto de unirse en matrimonio. Hay un despliegue de sonrisas y lágrimas entremezcladas. Todo es hermoso, armonioso y perfecto.
Today, the popular reality shows present a wide variety of topics related to weddings ranging from wedding makeovers, platinum (which means VERY expensive) weddings, out of the box and over the top weddings, choosing your wedding gown, to the display of neurotic, hysterical and controlling brides. Many think that if the dress fits, the cake arrives and of course the groom, there will be a wedding. Others believe that meticulous attention to every detail will ensure success. We know that the wedding gown has to be beautiful and flattering to the bride, that there needs to be flowers, food, drink, music and cake, and the venue must be amazingly beautiful. But what other elements are as equally important in determining the success and perfection of that wonderful day? In this story we explore this topic and share anecdotes.
Hoy día, los programas de televisión tipo “reality” presentan una amplia gama de temas relacionados con las bodas que van desde cambios de imagen de la boda, bodas de platino (que significa bodas MUY caras) bodas originales y bodas exageradas, la elección de su vestido de novia, a la exhibición de novias neuróticas, histéricas y controladoras. Muchos piensan que si el vestido queda bien, el bizcocho llega y, por supuesto, el novio, habrá boda. Otros creen que la meticulosa atención a cada detalle asegurará el éxito. During my time as property manager and currently as part of the Sales and Marketing staff for Tres Palmas Inn and Villas, I have found several common denominators. Most of my brides, coordinators, and family come to us attracted by the beautiful landscape, beachfront to the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, looking for a sunset wedding (and Rincon offers the most stunning sunsets in the world). They come totally enamored by the architecture of Villa Tres Palmas, our main villa. Yes, they ask about weather, yes, they ask about accommodations and air conditioners, but initially, these are the three main selling points for weddings at Tres Palmas Inn and Villas. Page 12
Durante mi tiempo como gerente, y en la actualidad como parte del personal de ventas y mercadeo de Tres Palmas Inn and Villas, he encontrado varios denominadores comunes. La mayoría de mis novias, coordinadores y familiares llegan atraídos por la belleza del paisaje frente al mar, a la Reserva Marina Tres Palmas buscando celebrar una boda al atardecer (y Rincón ofrece las puestas de sol más impresionantes del mundo). Llegan totalmente enamorados de la arquitectura de Villa Tres Palmas, nuestra villa principal. Sí, preguntan sobre el clima; sí, preguntan sobre los cuartos y los acondicionadores de aire, pero esto tres factores mencionados son lo que nos asegura las ventas para las bodas en Tres Palmas Inn and Villas.
For Sarah Rosario, Wedding Planner, location and professional vendors is the key for an amazing wedding since it will ensure everything will run smoothly. “On some occasions we have encountered situations outside of our control; for example, bad weather and difficult family members. That is why it is also important that vendors, wedding venues, and planner work together and support each other so the wedding process and the wedding day is a successful one.” For Juan Luis Valentín a local photographer, weather is a very important factor. “I always pray for good weather, nice light and nice people to work with.” Juan Luis says that if you start with nice weather and lights, those little details that could be fine-tuned can always be photo-shopped, but you must have something good to start with. He says he always finds his way around challenging models but it is nicer if they are relaxed and enjoying the moment and not worried about everything that is going on around them. For Anngiselle Merchant-a Bride at Tres Palmas Inn and Villas, flexibility, and service were very important. Since she was coordinating things long distance, she needed to make sure she was supported on the other end. “Acquiring list of vendors affiliated with the venue was very helpful, as well as patient and courteous staff that was able to walk us through every step of the way, even after our event was over.” Story continued on page 14
Para Sara Rosario, Coordinadora de Bodas, la ubicación y el profesionalismo de los vendedores son la clave para una boda increíble, ya que esto hará posible que todo funcione sin problemas. “En algunas ocasiones nos hemos encontrado con situaciones fuera de nuestro control, por ejemplo, el mal tiempo y los familiares difíciles. Por eso también es importante que los vendedores, los lugares de celebración de bodas y el coordinador trabajen juntos y se apoyen los unos a otros para que el proceso de la planificación y la celebración de la boda sea un éxito “. Para Juan Luis Valentín, un fotógrafo local, el clima es un factor muy importante. “Yo siempre rezo para que haya buen tiempo, buena luz y buena gente para trabajar.” Juan Luis dice que si usted comienza con buen tiempo y buena luz, esos pequeños detalles que necesitaran ser ajustados siempre puede ser retocados, pero se debe tener algo bueno como fundamento. Dice que siempre encuentra la forma de trabajar con modelos difíciles pero es mejor si están relajados y disfrutando el momento y no preocupados por todo lo que pasa a su alrededor. Para Anngiselle Merchant-una novia en Tres Palmas Inn and Villas, la flexibilidad, y el servicio son muy importantes. Como estaba coordinándolo todo a larga distancia, tenía que asegurarse de tener apoyo del otro lado en Puerto Rico. “El tener una lista de proveedores afiliados a la propiedad donde se celebraba la boda fue muy útil, así como contar con un personal muy paciente y muy cortés que fue capaz de guiarme a través de cada paso del camino, incluso después que nuestro evento había terminado.”

As wedding planner for more than ten years, Anita Quintana has seen it all and has been able to manage through with flying colors. But what do you do when there is something that is totally beyond your control like terrible weather or the Department of Agriculture taking your flower shipment hostage? The veteran event planner says, “Improvise.” And having mastered the “know how” and “go around,” she certainly knows how to create, recreate and make her events a success. But she confesses that her secret is also team-work; planner, venue, and vendors working together. Joyce S. Onge-Property Manager at Tres Palmas Inn and Villas and Guest Services Coordinator says, “We understand the importance of a quick response to the requests of guests, planners and vendors as well as to real life emergencies.” Joyce recalls one of her very first experiences on the job in Guest Services where a major medical emergency took place in the midst of a wedding ceremony. “We successfully jumped in and took care of the situation… allowing the ceremony to proceed seamlessly and the bride never found out until the next day! Josue Joel, Food Artist, feels that a good rapport with his customers is vital for successfully delivering a product that satisfies the client’s demands and expectations. Clear communication is a must. There is a process in which we communicate back and forth exploring all options for concept, appearance, flavor, texture and so on, so when that cake is finally presented on that special day it is exactly what they have desired. There are so many different elements to manage and sometimes even reconcile when planning a wedding, that often, it is amazing how they finally fall into place and we get to experience those perfect, sublime and unforgettable moments that will make us laugh, cry and sigh for the rest of our lives.

Como planificadora de bodas por más de diez años, Anita Quintana ha visto todo y ha sido capaz de transitar a través de todo de forma brillante. Pero, ¿qué hacer cuando hay algo que está totalmente fuera de su control, como el mal tiempo, o el Departamento de Agricultura toma su envío de flores como rehén? La veterana dice sonriendo, “Improvisar.” Y después de haber dominado el “inventar” y “el darle la vuelta a las cosas”, ella ciertamente sabe cómo crear, recrear y hacer que sus eventos sean un éxito. Josue Joel, Artista de Alimentos y Repostería, siente que una buena relación con el público es vital para entregar a sus clientes un producto que satisfaga sus demandas y expectativas. La comunicación clara es muy importante. Nos enfrascamos en un proceso de comunicación recíproca que nos permite explorar untos todas las opciones para el concepto, la apariencia, sabor, textura, etc., del producto. Así que cuando ese bizcocho se presenta finalmente en ese día especial, el mismo será exactamente lo que los clientes han deseado. Hay tantos elementos diferentes para manejar e incluso a veces reconciliar en la planificación de una boda, que, a menudo, es increíble ver como finalmente todo cae en su lugar haciéndonos experimentar esos momentos perfectos, sublimes e inolvidables que nos harán reír, llorar y suspirar por el resto de nuestras vidas.

Trends/Moda As more couples flock to Rincón’s beautiful, sun-kissed shores each year for weddings, we thought it would be appropriate to highlight trends local events coordinators and wedding planners are seeing. I have spoken with coordinators from: Our Dream Weddings, All Events, and Taste Buds Classic Events, I am personally an event coordinator with Rincon Events, La Copa Llena, and Casa Isleña Inn, and I am very excited to share with you what we have all been seeing within the industry. The new generation of brides are loving bright colors and showing their individual spirit according to Janette Veláquez & Elsie Rodríguez of Our Dreams Events, “... our favorite wedding trend for this season is the bright colors for the wedding decoration. Traditional colors are always welcome but now there’s a tendency to prefer vivid colors like tangerine, classic blue, burgundy, kelly green, plum and pink, also it gives a sense of originality. It could be combined with soft color like aquamarine, lucite, green, blush pink, lavender or toasted almond; it will depend on the style of the wedding. Giving a sense of originality, creativity and fun to the wedding! You can choose themes like bohemian, thematic or vintage.” “Also the details are very important. At the end of the day, we love the trends that communicate and reflect the personality of the bride and groom. Don’t be scared to do something different and creative. It will make the wedding more magical, fun and relaxed for you and the guests.” Rincon Events is also seeing a surge in variations on bohemian style brides. Many are choosing bright, colorful shades to compliment the natural sparkle of a sunset ceremony. Others are choosing royal, rich, wine colors of purple and burgundy to mingle with pieces of vintage elegance, such as gold and copper which are being infused into their invitations, decor, silverware, and glasses. Rincon Events founder Allison West says “gold and geometric shapes are very trendy right now; they lend to the new bohemian chic feel.” Other popular items brides are incorporating into their weddings are feathers, natural gems, succulents, and cascading wildflowers. Puedes elegir temas como bohemio, temático o de época.” “Además, los detalles son muy importantes. Al final del día, nosotros amamos las tendencias que comunican y reflejan la personalidad de la novia y el novio. No temas en hacer algo diferente y creativo. Hará de la boda una más mágica, divertida y relajada para usted y sus invitados.” Rincon Events también está observando una oleada en variaciones de novias al estilo bohemio. Muchas de ellas están seleccionando tonos coloridos y brillantes los cuales complementan con el brillo natural de una ceremonia al atardecer. Otros están eligiendo colores reales y ricos, tonos vino en violeta o borgoña los cuales se mezclan con piezas de elegancia antigua, colores como el dorado y el cobre son infundidos en las invitaciones, la decoración, los cubiertos, y

Her party favor advise “assign each guest with their own cup, that they can use all night and even take as wedding favors (mason jars are very common for this.)”

Sustainable food choices are also being highlighted in a special way. Many couples want to share their love of Puerto Rican culture, via local cuisine, with items such as pig roasts, sweet plantains, and tostones, to name just a few, the list could go for days. Family style serving and food stations with fresh local fish and varieties of ceviche are guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser. When it comes to the cake, a non-tradition, less refined, rustic style is beginning to emerge in the form of the naked layered cake or cake without an outer layer of frosting, often garnished with flowers and or berries.
Otra de las áreas en las que se están enfocando las nuevas tendencias es en todo aquello relacionado a ser eco-amigable y ocasionar el menor impacto posible al medio ambiente. Para All Events y Sarah Rosario, su tendencia favorita actualmente son las bodas eco-amigables, ella fomenta el reciclaje, siempre utilizando bajillas verdaderas, y haciéndose cargo de la Madre Naturaleza. Su consejo favorito para una fiesta “asígnale a cada invitado su propio vaso, el cual puedan utilizar toda la noche e inclusive llevárselo como obsequio de la boda (los tarros de masón son utilizados comúnmente para hacer esto).”
The last trend I’d like to mention should come as no surprise, as we continue to move forward into a highly digitalized world-technology is taking over. Photography and videography are being taken to new heights, with drones flying around ceremonies, capturing 360 degree images. Go-Pro cameras and Selfie Sticks are being passed around during weddings. Vintage and new Polaroid cameras are being used for guest books and fun favors. Laptops along with chalk boards or dry erase boards are being set up on welcome tables to create digital guest books.

Cuando del bizcocho se trata elegir uno no tradicional, menos refinado y con un estilo rustico está comenzando a surgir en la forma del bizcocho en capas desnudo o el bizcocho sin una capa exterior de glaseado, usualmente adornado con flores o moras.

Glittering sand and shades of blue green water will always have a special place in the tropical weddings that take place in Puerto Rico, but we are all seeing trends lean towards personalization, bohemian and vintage styles, sustainable choices for decor and food, and technology.
La última tendencia que me gustaría mencionar no debe sorprender, a medida en que nos movemos hacia un mundo altamente digitalizado el cual esta reinado por la tecnología. La fotografía y la videografía están siendo llevadas a nuevos niveles, con la utilización de vehículos aéreos no tripulados los cuales vuelan alrededor de la ceremonia, captando imágenes de 360 grados. Las cámaras Go-Pro y los palos para auto fotos están siendo pasadas entre los invitados durante la boda. Cámaras antiguas y Polaroids son utilizadas para los libros de invitados y recordatorios divertidos. Ordenadores portátiles acompañados de pizarras o pizarras blancas están siendo colocados en las mesas de bienvenida para crear un libro de invitados virtual. Las arenas resplandecientes y los tonos del agua azul-verdosa siempre tendrán un lugar especial en las bodas tropicales que se realizan en Puerto Rico, pero todos estamos viendo tendencias que se inclinan hacia la personalización, estilos bohemios y de época, opciones sustentables para la decoración y la comida, y la tecnología.

With Leslie LaRonga Flowers are an important aspect to your special day that bring color, life, and aroma to your wedding. They help make table settings more beautiful and can transform a formerly dull space into a beautiful personality-filled one. Yet they can also be confusing for a beginner, and a budget breaker for many. Leslie LaRonga from Tropical Treasures offers us some advice for brides and shares some of her most challenging wedding stories. Leslie has been working with flower arrangements on the island of Puerto Rico since 1988. One night in the late ‘80s while she was playing drums in her jazz band at the opining of the Holiday Inn casino in Ponce, a friend asked if she could help him with some flower arrangements. Since then, she has been in the business and has worked at different locations on the island such as the Crown Plaza in San Juan. Las flores son un aspecto importante para el día de tu boda ya que brindan color, vida y aroma a tu día especial. Ayudan a embellecer los centros de mesa y pueden transformar un espacio originalmente monótono en uno lleno de personalidad y belleza. Sin embargo, trabajar con ellas puede ser algo confuso para un novato, y un interruptor de presupuesto para muchos. Leslie LaRonga de Tropical Treasures nos ofrece algunos consejos para las novias y comparte algunas de las historias de novias más desafiantes que ha experimentado. Leslie ha estado trabajando con arreglos florales en Puerto Rico desde 1988. Since most flowers such as roses, peonies, daisies and the particularly challenging hydrangeas, (that need to be kept in water at all times) must be shipped from other parts of the world, choosing to go with local flowers will ensure absolute freshness. So what kinds of local flowers will the bride expect to be able to choose from? Leslie is able to find many different varieties of the ginger plant, including the red torch, pink torch and white torch. She is also able to find many varieties of bromeliads and heliconia. My absolute personal favorite are the plumerias also known as frangipanis; not only are they beautiful but they have a strong pleasant aroma that makes you feel like you are in paradise. So what is one of the craziest or most challenging things she has done for a wedding? For a wedding in Rincón, she made Hawaiian lei entirely from fresh carnations. This task took her 7 hours and each lei weighed about 5 pounds. She also made a floating flower arrangement in the swimming pool at Casa Isleña Inn entirely from local tropical flowers. This arrangement needed weights down the middle and had had to be tied to four planters by the pool. También puede conseguir una gran variedad de bromelias y heliconias. Mis favoritas indiscutiblemente son las plumarias también conocidas como sacuanjoch en Nicaragua, no solamente son hermosas pero además poseen un fuerte y agradable aroma que te hace sentir como si estuvieras en el paraíso. Así que, ¿cuáles son algunas de las experiencias más locas y retadoras que ha tenido que realizar para una boda? Bueno, para una boda en Rincón, tuvo que hacer guirnaldas hawaianas hechas completamente de claveles frescos. Esta tarea le tomo 7 horas y cada guirnalda pesaba cerca de 5 libras. También, hizo un arreglo floral que flotaba en la piscina de Casa Isleña Inn y el cual estaba totalmente hecho con flores tropicales locales. Este arreglo necesito pesas en el medio y tuvo que ser atado a cuatro jardineras en la piscina. A pesar de que elegir las flores perfectas para tu boda puede parecer algo desalentador, Leslie tiene la experiencia y el conocimiento para ayudarte a tomar la mejor opción. When planning a destination wedding, it is important to have realistic expectations. First and foremost, Puerto Rico is an island: resources, decor, non-tropical flowers, and food are all shipped in, stores, florist, and purveyors do not readily have all items. Those that are working for you are planning ahead and going the extra mile to make these special pieces available to you.

Cuando estas planeando una boda de destino, es muy importante tener expectativas realistas. Primero que nada, Puerto Rico es una isla, los recursos, la decoración, las flores no tropicales, y la comida es importada, por lo que las tiendas, los floristas, y los proveedores no poseen todos los artículos. Aquellos que están trabajando para usted, están planificando de antemano y están dando la milla extra para hacer de cada pieza especial una que esté disponible para usted.
2. A wedding planner is a must, I have not seen one article about destination weddings that does not suggest having one. They are going to make your wedding infinitely better, take away stress, and help with communicating any language barriers. 3. When booking a planner, it is important to ask what is a typical budget for the amount of guests you will be inviting. Being up front and honest from the start on what you can spend is crucial to fulfilling your expectations. Yes, things may not be as expensive as a big city wedding, but know that things are priced fairly, and that a lot of labor and love goes into making your special day perfect for you.
2. Un planificador de bodas, es sumamente necesario. No he visto un sólo artículo sobre bodas de destino en el cual no se sugiera tener uno(a). Ellos van a hacer de su boda una infinitamente mejor, lo liberaran de estrés, y le ayudaran a sobrellevar cualquier barrera lingüística que pueda tener. 3. Cuando vaya a contratar un planificador es importante preguntar cuál es el presupuesto promedio para la cantidad de invitados que desea invitar. Ser honesto y abierto desde el inicio en relación a lo que puede costear es crucial para poder cumplir a cabalidad con sus expectativas. Si, las cosas talvez no son tan costosas como lo serían en una gran boda de ciudad, pero recuerda que las cosas se encuentran a precios justos, y que muchísimo trabajo y amor se emplea en el proceso de hacer de su día uno perfecto para usted.
