New Girls on the Team! ¡Nuevas chicas en el equipo! Hi! My name is Helix, like Felix, but with an H. I was named aaer my father. People tell me we are very alike, so I think that my curious personality comes from him. This quality of mine brought me to study Markeeng. In the course of my studies, I had the opportunity to take a Photoshop class which I fell in love with and connnued to study. Thanks to my creaavity and abiliies in graphic design I’ve been able to work on various pr projects, from logo creaaons to ads in newspapers and virtual plaaorms. Now, I have the opportunity to connnue working as a graphic designer with El Coquí of Rincón magazine. This is a new stage in my life that I know is going to be a period of professional growth. If there’s something life has taught me its that you must enjoy what you do to succeed.
I’m Caroline, the biggest The Office fan you’ll ever meet! I’m also an Accountant, Marketer, and Adverrser. With experience in the Digital Markeeng field, I’ve managed many brands across all forms of social media. ¡Hola! Mi nombre es Hélix como Félix, pero con H. Fui nombrada por mi padre. Muchas personas me dicen que nos parecemos, por lo que pienso que mi curiosa personalidad proviene de él. Esta cualidad me llevó a estudiar Mercadeo en la universidad y en el transcurso de mis estudios tuve la oportunidad de tomar una clase de Photoshop, de la cual me enamoré y seguí estudiando. Gracias a mi creaavidad y habilidades en diseño gráfico, he podido trabajar en varios proyectos. Desde diseño de logos, hasta crear anuncios en periódicos y plataformas virtuales. Ahora, tengo la oportunidad de seguir trabajando como diseñadora gráfica en la revista El Coquí of Rincón. Una nueva etapa en mi vida, que sé que será un período de crecimiento profesional. Si la vida me ha enseñado algo es que debes disfrutar lo que haces para triunfar.

Protagonizando nuestra edición de noviembre se encuentra la obra tulada El Barrio, creada en acrílico sobre canvas en un tamaño de 24” x 36". En ella se reúnen varios conceptos de composición. Formando una canndad de figuras geométricas con una variada integración de colores. La vista describe gráficamente el Barrio de La Boca Caminito en Buenos Aires, Argennna, zona turíssca de su país de origen. Lo interesante de este lugar es su proximidad al puerto, donde los tripulantes de los diferentes navíos solían regalar coloridas pinturas que así fueron pintando y creando esta atrevida gama de colores. Actualmente, El Barrio se encuentra a la venta. Sería un honor para Ricardo que alguien pudiese colgar esta significaava obra en un rincón muy especial para usted. Todo interesado puede contactarle.
Ricardo Rey was born in Buenos Aires, Argennna to a very disciplined family and a mother very inclined to art despite any formal studies. That’s where Ricardo gets his arrssc passion. It all started with piano lessons unnl he graduated as a Professor from the Williams systems at the age of 12. He managed to enter a School of Fine Arts and worked different jobs unnl, through his father’s friend, he joined one of the best Adverrsing agencies at that me: McCann Erickson in Argennna. There, he discovered what would finally become his formal studies, Graphic Arts, which he developed throughout his extensive career. In 1962, he was mandated to fulfill compulsory Military Service in the Navy. There he was lucky to receive a scholarship for a design he made for the Department of Naval Personnel Officers. His behavior and aatude lead him to fulfill a part in the cruise-school La Argennna that goes around the world—where he gained tremendous life experiences. During his 2-year period of service he made contacts in Puerto Rico where he then decided to emigrate. He gained experience in different Publishing and Adverrsing companies during the first difficult years unnl he became an Art Director. He then took the next step of establishing his own graphic arts studio and adverrsing agency, Ricardo Rey Studios, which had many profitable and successful years. For the love of his profession, he then started teaching adverrsing design and publicaaon produccon classes at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. For many years, he also

contributed his me to various chariies such as the Hospital Oncológico, Fondos Unidos de Puerto Rico, Liga Puertorriqueña contra el Cáncer, Museo del Mar, and the Internaaonal Wine Fessvals, amongst others. He has also been an Advisor in Visual Communicaaons for countless companies such as Lafayeee Electronic, the Autoridad de Los Puertos, Hospital San Rafael, Hospital Interamericano de Medicina Avanzada, HealthproMed, and others. Lured by his love for music, he also put his piano skills to praccce by joining concert and accviies. He performed in the Lobby of the famous Hotel San Juan for several years. He has obtained innumerable awards for his work in Graphic Arts. His art has also been included in pressgious publicaaons in the United States and Puerto Rico, such as Art Direccon Magazine Yearbooks, The Book of America Trademarks & Symbols of The World.
He connnues to create and design for different clients. They have trusted him with their needs through many years of excellent relaaonships. He ssll enjoys paying the piano and painnng in his free me. The circumstances that we are currently going through have been somewhat complicated for Ricardo too. But like a true arrst, he creaavely shares his talent by performing piano recitals from his balcony, delighhng his neighbors with his best classics. “It was a unique moment which I enjoyed to the fullest. The balconies looked intriguing due to the number of the number of people who aaended and enjoyed it.” Ricardo exclaimed.

Walk ng an Island
Cam nando una isla Hola, mi nombre es Julie. Soy de Colorado (graduada de la CU 2004-2007). Crecí en un pequeño pueblo en la montaña donde todos se conocían entre sí. La gente se detenía a decir hola o buenos días porque era la costumbre (¡Arriba los Golddiggers!). Por lo tanto, si hago contacto visual con alguien, siempre diré hola. Esa es precisamente la razón por la que me enamoré de Puerto Ri Rico. Aquí siempre saludan o te desean un buen provecho en el restaurante, te conozcan o no.

I asked myself: "How can I see this island the way locals do?"
Me pregunté: "¿Cómo puedo ver esta isla como un local?"
Professionally, I am a sustainability consultant turned into a travel agent. I used to be the Director of Sustainability for Aurora Public Schools (in Colorado). A massive budget shorrall in 2017 cut my career short, laying me off. Ever since I relocated to Puerto Rico and fused my personal interests in traveling with responsible and ethical praccces. I started my business, providing my clie clients with immersive and authennc experiences centered on the island's local entrepreneurial spirit. My intennon is to keep dollars in the communiies creaang meaningful partnerships.
Soy una Consultora de Sostenibilidad que se convirró en una Agente de Viajes. En Colorado, solía ser la Directora de Sostenibilidad de las Escuelas Públicas de Aurora. Un enorme déficit presupuestario en 2017 interrumpió mi carrera dejándome sin empleo. Desde entonces vivo en Puerto Rico. Aquí fusioné mis intereses personales en viajar con prácccas responsables y éécas. Comencé mi ne negocio, brindando a mis clientes experiencias inmersivas y auténncas centradas en el espíritu empresarial local de la isla. Ironically, I was just returning from Ethiopia in February from a small group trip when the whole world shut down due to the Pandemic (of COVID-19). Puerto Rico, as well as Ethiopia, fly under the radar for many travelers. My hope has always been to elevate locals' lived experiences, their hospitality, unique flavors, and general good- will towards visitors through small group travel.
Irónicamente, acababa de regresar de EEopía en febrero con uno de mis grupos cuando todo el mundo cerró debido a la Pandemia (de COVID-19). Puerto Rico, así como EEopía, pasan desapercibidos para muchos viajeros. Mi esperanza siempre ha sido elevar las experiencias de los locales, su hospitalidad, sabores únicos y buena voluntad hacia los visitantes a través de viajes en grupos pequeños.
The closure of Puerto Rico to travelers was devastaang for businesses, restaurant owners, local hotels, and guest houses. Not only did the island face cancellaaon and uncertainty, but a month prior, in January, a series of massive earthquakes rocked the island. Now February bringing a Pandemic rife with restriccons and curfews not just on the island but throughout the world made the upcoming traveling months and daily accviies really bleak.
El cierre de Puerto Rico fue devastador para las empresas, los dueños de restaurantes, los hoteles locales y las casas de huéspedes. La isla no solo se enfrentó a la cancelación y la incerrdumbre, sino que un mes antes, en enero, una serie de terremotos masivos sacudió la Isla. Ahora, en febrero, enfretábamos una Pandemia llena de restricciones y toques de queda que hizo de los pr próximos meses de viaje y accvidades diarias fueron casi nulas. En medio de este caos, caminaba temprano en las mañanas para despejar mi mente, soñar despierta o pensar en oportunidades y futuros viajes de grupos pequeños. Todos mis viajes personales habían sido cancelados, incluyendo un viaje a Nepal y una visita a mi familia en Colorado. El estar desempleada me hizo entender que no tenía que volar para disfrutar de la experiencia de viaje o para volverme una mejor viajera. Comencé a pracccar en mi propia ciudad. Sabía que muchas personas estarían en mi misma situación: con pocos fondos y pocas opciones de viaje. Esperaba

inspirar a más personas a explorar sus alrededores con estos paseos diarios. Recorría diferentes calles de mi ciudad, lugares en los que nunca había estado, a pesar de vivir aquí hace más de dos años. Un día terminé caminando hasta el siguiente pueblo (más de 10 millas), y fue entonces cuando tuve la loca idea de seguir y caminar por toda la isla, ¡o al menos intentarlo!

Out of this cluster of a mess, I would walk early in the mornings to clear my mind, daydream, or think about opportuniies and future small group trips. From a trip to Nepal to a family visit back to Colorado, all of my personal travels had been canceled. Not having any work myself, I realized that I didn't actually have to fly anywhere to enjoy the traveling experience or become a be beeer traveler. I could praccce right in my town. I knew that many people would face this similar challenge: not many funds and not many travel oppons. I hoped to inspire and encourage people to explore their own backyards with these daily walks. I would go down different streets in my town, places that I had never been to, even though I had moved here over two years ago. One day I ended up walking to the next town (more than 10 miles), and that was when I had the hair-brained idea to keep going and walk around the whole island, or at least aaempt it!

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED? Puerto Rico is dubbed as the "Island of Enchantment," and it certainly lives up to its nickname in every sense. The local knowledge of the land was some of the best storytelling I've ever heard, especially regarding natural disasters and how the land and marine forms that helped certain areas avoid flooding during tropical storms. The natural ecosystems overlap with one another to create microclimates within the island's predominately tropical rainforest temperatures. Interessngly, El Yunque (pronounced Yoon-kay) is the only rainforest in the United States, and it happens to be right here in Puerto Rico (Río Grande, to be exact). The island is vastly diverse, and I always knew it was, but being able to walk and experience it first-hand, even many different climate zones in just one day, was fascinaang. An excellent example of the island's diversity occurred on my third day, which ended up being the longest day of the trek. I walked just under 24 miles from Boqueron to La Parguera in the southwest corner of the island. I swam a channel at Playa Los Pozos, hiked a 1000 foot tall series of hills and bike trails in El Combate, walked on dusty rural roads outside of Betances, and arrived in La Parguera to swim in the bioluminescent water. In all honesty, it makes me sad that many "big islanders" have no idea about Puerto Rico. They don't realize that all Puerto Ricans are American ciizens and, as such, don't need a passport to travel to the island. You can drink the water, dollars spend just as well, if not beeer here. The island is closer to Venezuela than the mainland and played huge roles in many world events th throughout its annexaaon in 1898 with the Treaty of Paris. Having visited 42 of the 78 municipaliies, each one is unique and has its own flavor, slang, famous person, public art, and natural environment. From the coffee farms in Yauco to Loiza's bike paths, the surfing in Isabela, the bioluminescent waters in La Parguera, there are adventures around every corner, and it's hard to not feel like a kid again. Shoes are definitely opponal. The island of Puerto Rico is the Stolen Ancestral Land of the Jíbaro and Taíno.

Puerto Rico es conocida como la "Isla del Encanto" y ciertamente hace honor a su apodo en todos los sendos. La gente ene un gran conocimiento de la erra y escucharlos fue una de las mejores narraciones que he escuchado, especialmente con respecto a los desastres naturales y cómo la erra y las formas marinas ayudaron a ciertas áreas a evitar inundaciones durante las torment tas tropicales. Los ecosistemas aún en temperaturas predominantemente tropicales crean microclimas dentro de la isla. Curiosamente, El Yunque es la única selva tropical en los Estados Unidos, y está aquí en Puerto Rico. La isla es muy diversa, ya lo sabía, pero caminar y experimentarlo por cuenta propia, fue increíble. Incluso llegué a experimentar varias zonas climáácas en un solo día, fue fascina fascinante. Un ejemplo de la diversidad de la isla lo vi en mi tercer día, que terminó siendo el día más largo de la caminata. Caminé casi 24 millas desde Boquerón hasta La Parguera en la esquina suroeste de la isla. Nadé un canal en la Playa Los Pozos, caminé colinas y senderos para bicicletas de 1000 pies de altura en El Combate, caminé por caminos rurales y polvorientos en las afueras de Betances y llegué a La Parguera para nadar en el agua bioluminiscente. Honestamente, me entristece que muchos estadounidenses no conozcan de Puerto Rico. No saben que los puertorriqueños son ciudadanos también y, por tanto, no necesitan un pasaporte para viajar a la isla. Puedes beber el agua y los dólares se gastan igual de bien, si no mejor. La isla está más cerca de Venezuela que de Estados Unidos y desempeñó un papel importante en muchos ev eventos mundiales a lo largo de su anexión en 1898 con el Tratado de París. Luego de visitar 42 de los 78 municipios, puedo decir que cada uno es único y ene su propio sabor, jerga, personaje famoso, arte público y entorno natural. Desde los cafetales de Yauco hasta los carriles de bicicleta de Loíza, el surf en Isabela, las aguas bioluminiscentes en La Parguera, hay aventuras a la vuelta de la esquina y es diicil no volver a sennrse como un niño. Porque los zapatos son definiivamente opcionales. La isla de Puerto Rico es la erra ancestral robada del Jíbaro y el Taíno.

En casa con Rincón Rum At home with Rincón Rum A simple recipe for you to enjoy at home! Especially during these mes of COVID-19 and quarannne - we wanted to ssck with something very simple that anyone could easily make at home. Most people will already have the "Holy Trinity" of Caribbean Cocktails lying around their house: “Lime, Sugar and Spirit”. A rum that features the flavor of the original sugarcane source, like Rincón Rum, will mix parrcularly well with a liile lime and sugar. 1. Take a spoonful (or less) of sugar and dump it in a glass. You don't want the sugar to overpower the other ingredients. 2. Quarter a lime and squeeze 1 (or 2) of the wedges over the sugar and muddle unnl the sugar dissolves. 3. Add 2 ounces or more Rincón Rum, and ice if desired. What you have here is the "Pequeño Punch" which is very basic, but endlessly drinkable. It's also the basis of a rainbow of more complicated cocktails: - Add some soda water and mint...and you have a delicious Mojito! - Add a splash of whatever fresh juice you might have, and you have a simple Rum Punch. - Add some Karibe Kombucha and you have a drink that will keep you hydrated and feeling great all day. ¡Una receta simple para disfrutar en casa! Hoy más que nunca, durante estos empos de COVID-19 y cuarentena- queríamos uulizar ingredientes simples que cualquiera pudiera tener en casa. La mayoría de la gente ya cuentan con la “Sannsima Trinidad” de los Cócteles Caribeños en sus casas: estos son “Lima (limón verde), Azúcar y Alcohol”. Un ron derivado de la caña de azúcar, como el Rincón Rum, mezcla muy bien con un poco de lima y azúcar. 1. Pon una cucharada (o menos) de azúcar en un vaso. No querrás que el azúcar domine sobre los otros ingredientes. 2. Corta un cuarto de lima y exprime uno (o dos) rebanadas sobre el azúcar y mezcla hasta que el azúcar se disuelva. 3. Agrega 2 onzas o más de Rincón Rum y hielo, si deseas. Lo que tenemos aquí es el “Pequeño Punch”, muy básico, pero no lo querrás soltar. Es también la base de una variedad de cócteles más complicados como: - Agrega un poco de agua carbonatada y menta y enes... un delicioso Mojito. - Agrega un toque de cualquier jugo fresco y enes un simple ponche de ron. - Agrega un poco de Karibe Kombucha y tendrás una bebida que te mantendrá hidratado todo el día. Thanksgiving is coming! And fall desserts are one of our favorite things of the season. So we wanted to share our famous family recipe to use for Thanksgiving or any major holidays. We hope you enjoy it!

¡Se acerca el Día de Acción de Gracias! Y los postres de otoño son una de nuestras cosas favoritas de la temporada. Así que queríamos comparrr nuestra famosa receta familiar para preparar en Acción de Gracias o cualquier día fessvo. ¡Esperamos que les guste!
Crumble topping ingredients:
Pie crust ingredients (optional): Ingredientes de la masa de tarta (opcional): You can buy a premade pie crust, or you can prepare it by mixing the pie crust ingredients Puede comprar una masa de tarta pre hecha o puede prepararla mezclando los ingredientes de la masa de tarta
Let’s bake! ¡Vamos a hornear!
Using the filling ingredients, peel and remove the core from the apples; slice them into ¹⁄₄ inch thick slices. Add it to a mixing bowl with the brown sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, buuer, pumpkin puree, salt, and walnuts. SSr unnl all the ingredients are well mixed.
Usando los ingredientes del relleno, pela y remueve el corazón las manzanas; córtalas en rebanadas (slices) de ¹⁄₄ de pulgada de grosor. Agrégalas a un tazón para mezclar junto con el azúcar morena, harina para todo uso, nuez moscada, canela, mantequilla, puré de calabaza, sal y las nueces. Revuelve hasta que todos los ingredientes estén bien mezclados.
Add your mix to the pie crust and spread evenly. Using the crumble topping ingredients, mix the flour, buuer, and brown sugar. It will be very dry but spread it evenly on top of your apples.
Agrega tu mezcla a la masa (crust) hasta distribuirlo uniformemente. Usando los ingredientes del crumble topping, mezcla la harina, la mantequilla y el azúcar morena. Estará muy seco pero espárcelo uniformemente hasta cubrir las manzanas.
Before puung it in the oven, gently create small holes with a fork throughout your pie, and add heavy cream (opponal). Bake at 425oF for 40-50 minutes unnl the crust looks golden brown like in the picture.
Antes de ponerlo en el horno, haz pequeños agujeros con un tenedor en la tarta y agrega crema espesa/heavy cream (opcional). Hornea a 425°F durante 40-50 minutos hasta que la corteza se vea dorada como en la imagen.
