would like to open this issue of El Coqui of Rincón with a thank you. A thank you to everyone who collaborated with us to produce eight marvelous issues this season. Photographers, artists, writers, business owners and community members make this publication possible. Each issue is a reflection of the creativity, love, and compassion that exists in the town of Rincón, Puerto Rico. As every year during the fall months, we take a little break to enjoy the rain, and even the heat! We will be back next season with another eight issues of great stories and promotions for Rincón. Until then!

marks the third year of the Defensa Animal de Rincón’s Animal Rescue Photo Contest. Pablo, Julia, & Matilde won the hearts of Rincón and took 1st place. The contest was a huge success due to the many sponsors and community members that participated.

We adopted Matilde back in August 2012, in Vega Baja. We had a beach house back then and a neighbor had a Dogo Argentino. He was a backyard breeder. He had seen us with our dogs and how happy they were and he wanted us to buy one of the puppies from his female dog. We remembered seeing this dog pregnant so many times, but we always told him that we refused to buy a dog. Then, his dog gave birth again to ten puppies. Again, he offered the best of the litter to us. We refused. He sold most of them, except the runt. One day we drove by his house and he stopped us. He said “ Nobody wants to buy this girl, so she’s yours.” He handed her to us, and we took her. As soon as we got home, we realized she had thousands of fleas and ticks. We immediately took care of her and the rest is “herstory” with us. Now she’s our Princess Matilde. We adopted Pablo in February 2015. His original family is from Rincón. They had another dog that did not get along with him. He was a puppy and all he wanted was to play with her, but she did not like him at all. They had to put him in the backyard to avoid fights, and the poor puppy was not enjoying his life as he deserved. We had put to sleep our Jack in November 2014, so when we were told that Tyson had a chance of ending in Saint Michelle, we did not hesitate to take him into our family. Tyson is known now as Pablo. I have never had such a happy and sociable pitbull. He has only brought happiness into our lives. We adopted Tonka (known now as Julia) as recently as March 2017. She was rescued from a backyard breeder in Rincón by a very special lady, Neva. She has helped me with so many rescues in PR, including vet expenses, traveling expenses to the US and adoptions. She has rescued hundreds of dogs and has set up sterilization clinics for dogs all over the island. There are so many dogs living the lives they deserve thanks to Neva. When she asked me to take Tonka, I could not refuse, but with the understanding that it was going to be on a foster basis to see how Matilde and Pablo got along with her. The first weeks were not easy since they did not get along with her at first. But now, we are enjoying our 3 dog family. We are the happiest family with our three rescued dogs! Page 8
Nosotros adoptamos a Matilde en Agosto del 2012, en Vega Baja. En ese tiempo teníamos una casa de playa y nuestro vecino tenía un Dogo Argentino. El tenía una crianza de estos animales en su patio trasero. El nos había visto con nuestros perros y lo felices que estaban, e insistió en que compráramos uno de sus cachorros de su perra. Nosotros recordábamos haber visto a esta perra preñada tantas veces pero siempre nos reusábamos a comprar uno de sus cachorros. Entonces, su perra dio a luz 10 cachorros otra vez. Otra vez nos ofreció el mejor de la camada. Nos negamos. Vendió casi todos los cachorros menos el más pequeño. El dijo, ‘nadie quiere comprar esta hembrita, así que es suya.’ Así que nos la dio y la aceptamos. Tan pronto llegamos a casa nos dimos cuenta que estaba infectada de garrapatas y pulgas. Inmediatamente la tratamos y el resto es ´su historia´ con nosotros. Ahora es nuestra Princesa Matilde. Adoptamos a Pablo en Febrero del 2015. Su familia original es de Rincón. Ellos tenían otro perro pero no se aceptaban entre ellos. El era un cachorro y solo quería jugar con ella, pero ella no lo aceptaba. Los tuvieron que separar y lo pusieron a él en el patio trasero de la casa, para evitar más peleas, pero el pobre cachorro no disfrutaba de la vida que se merecía. Nosotros tuvimos que poner a dormir a nuestro Jack en Noviembre del 2014, y no dudamos en aceptar este cachorro en nuestra familia. Tyson es ahora conocido como Pablo. Nunca había visto un pitbull tan contento y sociable como él. El ha traído solo felicidad a nuestras vidas. En Marzo del 2017, adoptamos a Tonka (ahora conocida como Julia). Ella fue rescatada de un criador en Rincón, por Neva, una mujer muy especial. Ella me ha ayudado con muchos de mis rescates, incluyendo los gastos de veterinarios, de viajes a los Estados Unidos y con adopciones. Ella ha rescatado cientos de perros y ha creado clínicas de esterilización a través de toda la isla. Muchos perros están viviendo la vida que se merecen gracias a Neva. Cuando ella me ofreció a Tonka, no pude resistirme, pero solo con el entendimiento de que iba a ser temporero hasta ver como Matilde y Pablo la aceptaban. En las primeras semanas no fue fácil ya que vimos que ellos de primera intención no la estaban aceptando. Pero ahora disfrutamos de nuestra familia de tres perros. ¡Somos una feliz familia con nuestros tres perros rescatados!
2nd place: Sofia Dogara “My name is Sofia Dogara...I was found about a year ago in an abandoned house in Aguadilla. The nice young lady that found me took me home with her and brought me to her grandmother. I had a badly sprained leg and was less than 10 lbs. My foster mom immediately put me online and things started to happen.
¨Mi nombre es Sofía Dogara…fui encontrada aproximadamente hace un año abandonada en una casa en Aguadilla. Una jovencita me encontró, me llevo con ella y me trajo a la casa de su abuela. Tenía una pata lastimada y pesaba solo 10 libras. Mi familia temporera enseguida me puso en los medios de comunicación y todo comenzó a pasar.
Not long after that my new mom made a call and set up a time to meet me. We then had a situation....the day she was coming I had five puppies. Oops! I was so thin that the vet didn’t know. Big surprise to all! I became a good mom until my babies went to NJ to a new home and I too finally went to my new home. My coat was a mess and so was I, but I was on my way to a better life. I am now very happy with my mom and dad and my two sisters, Coco and Kitesha (my cat). We love to play and mom is so good to me. I get to go to the doggie spa and I have lots of new toys and clothes. I hope all the animals get to have a nice home and loving families.”
No mucho después, mi nueva futura mama llamo e hizo una cita para conocerme. Pero tuvimos una situación…que el día que ella venia, tuve 5 cachorros. ¡Oops! Estaba tan flaca que ni el veterinario se dio cuenta. ¡Gran sorpresa para todos! Me convertí en una buena madre hasta que mis cachorros se fueron a NJ a su nuevo hogar y yo también finalmente encontré el mío. Mi pelaje y yo éramos un desastre, pero estábamos de camino a una mejor vida. Ahora estoy bien y feliz con mi mama y papa, y mis dos hermanas, Coco y Kitesha(mis gata). Nos encanta jugar y mi mama es buena conmigo. Voy a un Spa de perros, tengo muchos nuevos juguetes y ropa. Yo espero que todos los animales puedan tener un lindo hogar y una amorosa familia.¨

3rd place: Rico Meet Rico. He was found at Domes Beach in Rincon, most likely abandoned by his “family” over the Christmas Holidays. He was sick and malnourished, but still happy and friendly. We were visiting in January and saw his story on Defensa’s FB page. We met him and knew from Day One that he was meant to be our dog. With the help of his amazing foster parents and CC with Defensa, Rico is now enjoying his life in Coastal North Carolina. Rico was one of the lucky ones. He was not too sick and his personality made him easily adoptable. Some dogs aren’t so lucky. We believe there is a home for every dog and a dog for every home...thanks to all the groups in PR, that take in any dog in need. Any support you can offer is appreciated.

Conozcan a Rico. El fue encontrado en la Playa de Domes en Rincón, muy probablemente abandonado por su ¨familia¨ alrededor de las fiestas de Navidad. El estaba malnutrido y enfermo, pero amigable y contento. Estábamos de visita en Enero y vimos su historia en la página de Facebook de Defensa. Desde el primer día que lo vimos, supimos que estaba de pasar que se convirtiera en nuestro perro. Con la ayuda de sus padres temporeros y CC de Defensa, Rico ahora disfruta de una vida feliz en la Costa de Carolina del Norte. Rico fue uno de los afortunados, no estaba muy enfermo y su personalidad lo hizo fácilmente adoptable. Algunos perros no son tan afortunados. Somos de la creencia que hay un hogar para cada perro y un perro para cada hogar…. gracias a los grupos en PR que ayudan a estos perros con sus necesidades. Cualquier apoyo que ustedes puedan ofrecer será bien apreciado.

Coffee with Oscar Interview with Wilfren Tacoronte Written & Translated by Oscar Córdoba
When I arrived in Rincón a little over a year ago, I started searching for health care professionals who could meet my needs. I was in dire need of some serious and extensive dental work. The recommendations and advice received invariably resulted in one name, Dr. Wilfren Tacoronte. Over the course of many months and many office visits while under his care, I came to know Dr. Tacoronte, the exceptional Dentist and Oral Surgeon. Perhaps more slowly, but with great delight, I am starting to also know Wilfren, the equally exceptional man. The day I approached Dr. Tacoronte about our having a cup of coffee and granting me this interview, he carefully considered it, and smiled as he said “yes” (but with some definite dental floss attached!!). He insisted that I come to his home where he would personally brew the coffee for us. A week or so later, his office manager and spouse of 20 years, Ivette, contacted me as she had many times before to arrange a day and time. What follows is the result of that visit. The aroma of fresh, rich Puerto Rican coffee wafted through the opened door as we exchanged smiles and greetings when I arrived. Once inside their beautiful home in Añasco, we sat at his crystal topped dining table, just off the side of the kitchen of the home’s open floor plan. As we chatted about his Italian made coffee machine, Wilfren pulled open a bag of coffee beans and had me look and smell them. The medium sized beans were a uniform and a beautiful brown color. The aroma was a fantastic blend of Coffee, Chocolate, with a hint of Sesame. After the machine and the connoisseur crafted two marvelous cups of coffee (see photo by me), we settled into our interview. “Where were you born?” I asked. “I was born in Puerto Rico” he replied and went on, “My parents and family lived in Añasco then, up in the hills above where Mr. Frappe is now.” He explained that while quite young, they moved to Aguadilla, and later on to Mayagüez. He attended public schools through the sixth grade and Catholic schools from then on. I listened while I sipped the coffee and enjoyed another bite of the exquisite Banana-Nut-Chocolate bread Wilfren served us as he went on to share some of his escapades before entering Loyola Medical School. “I went to the University of Puerto Rico and also to Inter-Americana in San Germán”. Wilfren explains he was a “party animal” on his journey back then, but nevertheless he developed skills and sensibilities for Photography as an art form, he played and sang in a Rock Band, and he also became an Page 22
Cuando llegue a Rincón un poquito mas de un año atrás, pronto comencé mi búsqueda de profesionales de salud que podrían atenderme y ayudar con mi salud. Yo estaba en urgente necesidad de atención especializada de un Cirujano Dental. Las recomendaciones y consejos que recibí, invariablemente resultaban en un nombre, el Dr. Wilfren Tacoronte. Tras el curso de muchos meses y muchas visitas a su clínica dental mientras bajo su cuidado en el plan restaurativo extensivo diseñado para mi, llegue a conocer al Dr. Tacoronte, el extraordinariamente excepcional Dentista y Cirujano Dental. Tal vez un poco mas lentamente pero a mi gran delicia, estoy llegando a conocer a Wilfren, el hombre modesto pero de igualmente excepcional. El día que me le acerqué al Dr. Tacoronte acerca de tomarnos un café y que me otorgue esta entrevista, el lo consideró y sonriendo dijo que “¡si!” (¡¡pero con una atadura condicional de hilo dental!!). El insistió que yo venga a su casa donde el se encargaría de hacer nuestros cafés personalmente. Luego de una semana, aproximadamente, su Gerente de Oficina y Esposa de 20 anos, Yvette, me contactó como muchas veces antes para coordinar fecha y horario. Lo que sigue es el resultado de esa visita. El aroma al rico Café Puertoriqueño escapaba por la puerta de entrada mientras intercambiábamos sonrisas y saludos cuando llegué. Una vez dentro de la bella casa en Añasco, nos sentamos a la mesita del comedor con su tope de cristal. Allí, al lado de la cocina en la casa de plan amplio y abierto, conversamos acerca de la maquinita Italiana de hacer café. Wilfren saca una bolsita de café, la abre y me muestra para que vea y huela los granos, estos son uniforme, de tamaño mediano y de un hermoso color marrón. El aroma era
accomplished dancer. “In High School, I would arrive at a dance or party to find that the girls had already decided which would dance with me first, second, third, and so on”. Wilfren adds with a wry smile and his characteristic, understated humor, “The girls just wanted to dance with me since I was not as handsome then as I am now”. We laughed at this, and many other quips, but then reflected on the more serious choices he made in life. One day, young Wilfren realized he needed to buckle down and study hard to get his grades to the level where he could apply and be accepted to the highly ranked schools he was considering. His high grades and high scores on specific aptitude tests resulted in offers from top Medical schools such as Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Loyola University School of Dentistry, and others. He eventually chose Loyola. “So why did you choose Dentistry?” I asked. “I love working with my hands, the very close work...” but then he looks in my eyes and as if confessing an inner secret, continues. “I was terrified of Dentists. It was like a phobia! I would pass out as I sat in the chair, sometimes before. Even the smell of the Dental offices back then made me nauseous and weak at the knees”. “That is one hell of an ironic turnaround”, I thought to myself, so I went on to ask “How did you overcome that?” Wilfren remembers overhearing a conversation between one of his uncles and his father, “The Doctor is from Cuba, he is relaxed and gentle, he takes care, with patience, so people don’t feel the procedures.” After a few visits to this Dentist, Wilfren’s perceptions and resolve changed forever. As luck would have it, Wilfren and his classmates at Loyola learned in their third year that their class would be the last in the medical school’s field of Dentistry and related specialties. This resulted in much upheaval but the dedicated faculty and students who were determined to obtain their degrees from Loyola, faced the challenge with a more rigorous and challenging last year. The young, soon-to-be Dr. Tacoronte redoubled his efforts and added related higher level specialty courses beyond those required by the curriculum. Finishing in the final class of 1993, Dr. Wilfren Tacoronte came back to Puerto Rico to establish his professional practice. “I came back and had to work as a “Dental Assistant” for a couple of years while working through the red tape getting certified and licensed to work as a fully fledged Dentist.” Once licensed, he was required by the government to establish and serve at a dental clinic in Maricao. “Being a freak of continuing education, I had to teach myself carpentry, plumbing, electrical and sheet-rock skills in order for me to be able to meet the requirements and open the clinic.” “Those were very difficult years,” he goes on to tell me, “I was earning $1,143 per month which was less than what I needed to survive on and pay back my student loan. I am still paying off my student loan!!” What was not a lucrative practice in terms of income, since he felt great empathy for his low income clients and charged less whenever possible, became priceless in experience

Una vez que la maquinita y el experto conocedor completaron las dos maravillosas tazas de Café, (ver foto por mi) nos dedicamos a nuestra entrevista. “¿Adonde nació usted?” le pregunté, “Yo nací en Puerto Rico” el contesta y continua, “ Mis padres y mi familia vivimos en Añasco en ese entonces, arriba en los cerros por donde ahora esta Mr. Frappe”. El me explica que cuando aun pequeño, ellos se mudaron a Aguadilla y luego a Mayagüez. Fue educado en escuelas publicas incluyendo el sexto grado pero de allí en adelante fue a escuelas Católicas. Yo escuchaba mientras tomaba sorbitos del delicioso café y gozaba de otro bocadito del exquisito pan de banana, chocolate y nueces que Wilfren nos sirvió. El continuaba compartiendo algunas de sus aventuras antes de ingresar Loyola Medical School. “Fui a la Universidad de Puerto Rico y también Ínter-Americana en San Germán”. Wilfren explica que gozó esa juventud y andaba de fiesta en fiesta en su jornada de esos tiempos pero a su vez, el desarrollo destreza y habilidad artística en fotografía, perteneció a un grupo de Rock and Roll donde tocaba instrumentos y cantaba, y también fue un ágil bailarín. Me cuenta, “En High School, yo llegaba a las fiestas o a los bailes para encontrar que las chicas ya se habían puesto de acuerdo de quien bailaría conmigo primera, segunda, tercera etc.” Wilfren me aclara con una sonrisa traviesa y llena de ironía en su estilo característico de humor y dice “Las chicas solo querían bailar con migo ya que yo no era tan buen mozo como ahora”. Nos reímos mucho de este y otros chistes pero entonces comenzamos a hablar de decisiones mas serias que tomó en su vida. Un día, el joven Wilfren se dio cuenta que era hora de aplicarse a sus estudios para obtener las notas elevadas que necesitaba para poder ser aceptado en las escuelas de alto rango que el estaba considerando. Eventualmente, sus altas notas y altas calificaciones en exámenes de aptitudes y habilidades específicas le brindaron ofertas de varias famosas universidades con programas de medicina como Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Loyola University School of Dentistry, y otros. El eventualmente eligió estudiar en Loyola. “¿Entonces, porque decidió estudiar Odontología?” le pregunté, “Me encanta trabajar con mis manos, las tolerancias necesarias...” pero entonces se interrumpe, me mira profundamente en los ojos y continua como si confesando un oscuro secreto. “Yo tenia terror al Dentista. ¡Era como una fobia! Me desmallaba en la silla del dentista y aveces antes. Hasta el olor que uno encontraba al entrar en las oficinas dentales me daba nausea y se me aflojaban las piernas”. Yo pensé entre mi “¡Que tremenda ironía y completa vuelta en tu vida Wilfren!” Entonces le pregunté, “¿Como pudo superar eso?”. Wilfren me cuenta que recuerda haber escuchado una conversación entre su padre y un Tío que le contaba al padre de un dentista, “El Doctor es de Cuba y tiene un modo bien suave y calma a sus pacientes, toma su tiempo y usa buena anestesia, técnica y paciencia para que sus pacientes no sufran”. Luego de varias visitas a ese Dentista, la percepción y la determinación de Wilfren cambió para siempre. Unas vez en Loyola, en su tercer año de estudios, quiso Page 23
in developing his “Painless Dentistry” that he is now known for. “My clients appreciated my efforts. They would bring fruits and produce from their farms so I did not have to shop for these.” Some of those early patients make up to a two and a half hour drive one way to continue to benefit from his care here in Rincón. “Once I met my obligation in Maricao, I came to Rincón to establish my current clinic, and have been here ever since.” The early years were a true struggle, he tells me, but he smiles as he talks about his wife and life partner, Ivette, and how her running the office frees him to do what he loves. “I don’t go to work, I go to have fun and bring smiles to peoples’ faces.” Besides,” he quips, “I will be working here in Rincón into my seventies; I have to put Rodrigo through College!” As I look over at the four year old’s artwork posted on the side of the refrigerator, Wilfren laughs and talks about the love and beacon in his life. “Rodrigo Antonio came to us when I was already 47 years old. He calls me Papa Lindo, and he melts my heart”. The love shared by father and son is evident to all who see them together or hear one talk about the other. Rodrigo tells anyone he meets “I am the love of my father” and Wilfren shares a tender tear as he repeats his son’s loving expressions. “I am a happy Dude!” Dr. Wilfren Tacoronte confides as I prepare to leave. We remind each other we need to take a day to go sailing together. We laugh at the memories of our first sailing day and I tell him I look forward to many more to come. la suerte que Wilfren y sus colegas se enteren que su clase sería la ultima en graduarse del programa de Odontología y especialidades relacionadas porque la universidad decidió cerrar esa carrera de estudio. Esto causo gran ansiedad y revuelo pero miembros de la orgullosa facultad y sus dedicados estudiantes decidieron encarar la situación con mas rigor y determinación en su ultimo año. El joven, pronto a graduarse, Dr. Wilfren Tacoronte, redobló sus esfuerzos y agrego cursos y especialidades avanzadas mas allá de lo que se requería para graduarse. Procediendo desde allí, la clase final del 1993, el Dr. Wilfren Tacoronte volvió a Puerto Rico a ejercer su profesión. “Cuando llegué a Puerto Rico tuve que trabajar como “Ayudante de Dentista” por un par de años mientras trataba de cumplir requerimientos y esperaba las certificaciones necesarias para poder ejercer como Dentista y Cirujano Dental bajo mi licencia”. Una vez otorgada esa licencia, el gobierno requirió que establezca y trabaje una clínica dental en el pueblo de Maricao. “Siendo un fanático de educación continua tuve que enseñarme a hacer cosas en carpintería, plomeria, electricidad, y paneles de yeso para poder construir y establecer la clínica dental en Maricao. “Esos años fueron muy difíciles,” el me cuenta, “Estaba ganando $1,143 mensuales que era menos de lo que necesitaba para vivir y hacer los pagos a los prestamos estudiantiles. ¡¡Actualmente sigo pagando mi préstamo estudiantil!!” Lo que no resultó en remuneración apropiada porque su empatía no le permitía cobrar los costos necesarios a sus pobres pacientes de bajos recursos, resultó en una impagable experiencia en el desarrollo de su “Odontología sin Dolor” por la cual es muy conocido. “Mis clientes apreciaron mis esfuerzos y me traían frutas y cosechas de sus fincas así que no tenia que comprar algunas cosas.” Algunos de esos primeros clientes aun hacen un viaje de dos horas y media para continuar bajo su cuidado dental aquí en Rincón. “Una vez cumplida mi obligación en Maricao me vine a Rincón a establecer mi clínica y aquí estoy desde ese entonces.” Wilfren me cuenta, “Los primeros años fueron una verdadera lucha” pero el sonríe y cuenta de su esposa, compañera y socia en su vida, Yvette, le maneja su consultorio y le permite la libertad de dedicarse a lo que él ama hacer. “Yo no voy a trabajar, yo voy a divertirme y traer sonrisas en los rostros de mis pacientes. Ademas,” el dice haciendo uno de sus chistes, “Yo tendré que trabajar hasta en mis Setentas aquí en Rincón; deberé pagar los estudios universitarios de Rodrigo”. Mientras observo el costado de la nevera exponiendo los dibujos y mensajes del niño de cuatro años, Wilfren ríe y me cuenta del amor y faro de iluminación en su vida. “Rodrigo Antonio Tacoronte nos llegó cuando yo ya tenia 47 años de edad. El me dice ‘Papa Lindo’ y me derrite el corazón”. El amor entre padre e hijo es verdaderamente notable para todos los que los ven juntos o escuchan a uno hablar del otro. Rodrigo le dice a quien le pregunte, “Yo soy el amor de mi Papá” y Wilfren permite una intima lagrima al repetir las amorosas expresiones de su hijito. “¡Soy un tipo feliz!” exclama el Dr. Wilfren Tacoronte mientras concluimos la entrevista y me preparo para salir. Nos recordamos que debemos tomar otro día para un paseo en el velero. Nos reímos de las aventuras de la primera vez que salimos y le digo que espero poder compartir muchos mas. (ver foto por mi). The Healing Horse ~ Centro Equinoterapia
Equine therapy, also known as ‘adaptive riding’, or
Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAAT), is a form of riding instruction that utilizes horses to improve the quality of life, including the mental and emotional stability and physical fitness for people with a variety of physical, mental and sensory conditions. EAAT is based on the science behind the three-dimensional movement of the horse and how this movement can facilitate a variety of physical and mental improvements for riders. In addition, horses provide powerful bio-feedback during interaction, meaning that they are very sensitive to the emotions of the people with whom they are interacting . This sensitive nature is key in providing quality interactions for riders with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression, among many other mental disorders. Equine therapy compliments traditional therapies by providing novel experiences for the participant based on the fun and enjoyment that occurs when the participant interacts with a horse. The Healing Horse Centro Equinoterapia is a division of West Coast Ecuestre Inc (WCE); a 501c3 non-profit organization that started offering both therapeutic and traditional horseback riding for adults and children in 2015. The Equine Therapy Program Director is Annie Turri, who is certified as a Registered Therapeutic Riding Instructor (TRI) and an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL) by PATH International (http://www. pathintl.org). a equino terapia, también conocida como ´equitación adaptable´, o Terapia de Equitación Asistida (EAAT), es una forma de equitación instructiva utilizando caballos para mejorar la calidad de vida, incluyendo salud mental y estabilidad emocional y educación física para personas con variedad de condiciones físicas y sensoriales. EAAT es una ciencia basada en las tres-movimientos dimensionales de los caballos y como sus movimientos pueden facilitar a mejorar condiciones físicas y mentales de los jinetes. En adición, los caballos ofrecen un poderosa bio-retroalimentacion durante la interacción, significa que los caballos son muy sensitivos a las emociones de las personas con quien interactúan. Esta natural sensibilidad es la llave en la calidad de interacción con los jinetes con desordenes de estrés post-traumáticos, ansiedad y depresión, al igual que muchas otros desordenes mentales. Terapia Equina es complementada con terapias tradicionales provistas por personal con experiencia y basándose en lo divertido y entretenido que ocurre cuando los participantes interactúan con los caballos. El Centro es una división de West Coast Ecuestre Inc. The quality standards set by PATH ensure the highest level of riding instruction, facilities maintenance, equine welfare and administration. There are no other PATH certified riding instructors operating on the island of Puerto Rico outside of the San Juan metro area. In 2017, The Healing Horse is working towards the goal of becoming the first Premier Accredited PATH Therapeutic Riding Center on the island. Just recently, The Healing Horse completed a four-week program with the Asociación Mayaguezana de Personas con Impedimentos (AMPI). A group of 16 adults with a variety of physical and mental challenges including Down Syndrome, autism, and physical impairments participated in equine-assisted therapies at the WCE barn in Añasco. With the help of a team of volunteers and the instructors, the participants groomed, fed, and rode the two welltrained therapy horses, Spirit and Chevayo. The experience was an amazing way for these adults with special needs to experience horses in a way they have never been able to in the past, helping them to feel included as a part of society. The session was an extremely positive one for both the youths and the volunteers, and The Healing Horse and AMPI are currently working together on fundraising to provide a second session for these clients. In 2017, The Healing Horse is expanding services for private individual riders interested in therapeutic riding, as well as Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (traditional mental health therapies offered by a licensed therapist, paired with the use of the horse in sessions) and Hippotherapy (traditional therapies such as occupational or speech therapy, using a certified therapist in conjunction with the horse). Elaine Cosby (ESMHL, TRI, and licensed Speech Pathologist) started providing Hippotherapy services at The Healing Horse in March 2017. West Coast Ecuestre also works with able-bodied riders who wish to learn how to ride recreationally or competitively. The conventional horseback riding component is directed by Michelle Tinsen, and educates children as well as adults in the different disciplines of horseback riding and horsemanship. Together they also work to educate the public on equine welfare and care.
PATH Internacional regula los estándares para instructores certificados y programa de terapia ecuestre alrededor del mundo. Los estándares de calidad establecidos por PATH aseguran unos niveles altos en instrucciones ecuestres, mantenimiento de facilidades, la salud de los caballos y su administración. No hay otros instructores certificados de PATH operando en la isla de Puerto Rico fuera del área metropolitana de San Juan. En el 2017, The Healing Horse se encuentra trabajando en la meta de convertirse en el primer Premier Acreditado PATH Centro Terapéutico Ecuestre de la isla. Recientemente, The Healing Horse completo un programa de cuatro semanas con la Asociación Mayagüezana de Personas con Impedimentos (AMPI). Un grupo de 16 adultos con variedad impedimentos físicos y retos mentales incluyendo Síndrome Down, autismo, y discapacitados, participaron en terapia-ecuestre asistida en el granero de WCE en Añasco. Con la ayuda de un grupo de voluntarios y de instructores, los participantes acicalaron, alimentaron y montaron dos de los bien entrenados caballos terapéuticos, Spirit y Chevayo. La experiencia fantástica que estos adultos con necesidades especiales tuvieron fue una que nunca habían experimentado en el pasado, sintiéndose así parte de esta sociedad. La sesión fue extremadamente positiva tanto para los jóvenes como para los voluntarios, y The Healing Horse y AMPI están actualmente trabajando juntos recaudando fondos para una segunda sesión para estos clientes. En el 2017, The Healing Horse está expandiendo servicios a individuos privados que estén interesados en la equitación terapéutica, como también Psicoterapia Ecuestre Asistida (terapias tradicionales ofrecidas para salud mental por una terapista licenciada, en conjunto a sesiones usando caballos) e Hipo terapia (terapias tradicionales como terapia ocupacional o terapia del habla, usando terapistas en conjunto con los caballos). Elaine Cosby (ESMHL, TRI y licenciada patóloga del habla) comenzó proveyendo servicios de Hipo terapia en The Healing Horse en Marzo 2017. West Coast Ecuestre también trabaja con jinetes que quieran aprender a montar recreacionalmente o competitivamente. La equitación convencional es dirigida por Michelle Tinsen, y educa a niños como adultos en las diferentes disciplinas de la equitación. oncentrated on the distractions of our lives, we forget how to live life, to feel it, to choose it every day, and appreciate the biggest gift , to be alive, and to have the opportunity to be exposed to an unrepeatable experience. In a culture that every day distances us from ourselves and others, it becomes difficult to find ourselves. Meanwhile, the rest continue in motion, and our interior world is created and disintegrated constantly. That is why we need a rest: to be alert; to feel ourselves, at the Surface, but from the inside, where everything begins. That is what the Centro La Paz en Rincon is all about: the alternative care for our physical and mental health.

Elegirla todos los días y apreciar el regalo más grande que es –el estar vivo- tener la oportunidad de ser expuesto a una experiencia irrepetible. En una cultura que cada día nos aleja más de nosotros mismos y de –el otrose nos hace difícil encontrarnos como persona. Mientras, el resto de las cosas siguen en movimiento y nuestro mundo interior se crea y desintegra constantemente. Es por eso que necesitamos un descanso. Estar alerta. Sentirnos no sólo por la superficie sino desde donde todo comienza, el interior. De eso trata el Centro La Paz en Rincón. Del cuidado de nuestra salud física y emocional de una manera alternativa.
Vivienne Miranda Rodríguez, of Puerto Rican and Ecuadorian descendancy, mother, theater producer and profesional masseuse, is the owner since 2013. This is the only Center in Rincon and surrounding areas, that integrates yoga, pilates, therapeutic massages, esthetics, colon hydrotherapy, acupuncture, before and after birth care, vegan food every Friday , health clinics with international and local teachers, mantras and song, and therapeutic arts. Community service is the ideal of the institution, without forgetting the love that you feel upon entrance to the Center.
Vivienne Miranda Rodríguez de descendencia ecuatoriana y puertoriqueña, madre, productora de teatro y masajista profesional. Es dueña desde el 2013 del único Centro en Rincón y áreas limítrofes que integra yoga, pilates, masajes terapéuticos, esteticista, hidroterapia del colon, acupuntura, ayuda antes y después de un parto, comida vegana -todos los viernes-, talleres de salud con maestros internacionales y locales, mantras y prontamente arte terapéutico. Además de servicios a la comunidad como parte del ideal de su institución. Sin dejar de mencionar que ofrece su cariño desde la entrada de su Centro.
Miranda faithfully believes in her project. As a child, she grew up surrounded by activities like therapeutic Yoga Iyengar, the pranayama breathing discipline, and massages. She explains that she has adjusted her disciplines according to the different stages in her life. She also recommends that one adjust their asanas ( yoga posture) in accordance to the seasons and individual conditions.
Miranda cree fielmente en su proyecto. Desde niña fue educada dentro de actividades como el Yoga Iyengar terapéutico, la pranayama –disciplina de la respiración- y los masajes. Asegura que mientras crecía ajustaba sus prácticas de acuerdo a las etapas en que se encontraba en su vida. Como también comenta que se deben ajustar las asanas –posturas del yoga- de acuerdo a la temporada y las condiciones de cada individuo.
She is of the opinion that they should teach this practice in schools, especially now when the island is in a fight for its identity. She understands that this general debate can be reflected in some ways in the children. It is very important as well to provide education of self awareness and how to manage our emotions. Page 42
También opina que éstas prácticas deberían enseñarse en las escuelas, sobre todo cuando el país se encuentra en una lucha por su identidad. Ella entiende que ese debate general puede reflejarse de alguna manera en los niños. Además de que es muy importante la educación sobre el auto reconocimiento y el manejo de las emociones.
The Centro La Paz orients each person about activities and practices that should be according to their personal necessities, conditions, or searches. Each body is different. The instructors observe each student and on the way they guide them through each practice.
En el Centro La Paz se orienta a cada persona sobre las actividades y prácticas que debería ejercer de acuerdo a sus necesidades, condiciones y búsquedas. Cada cuerpo es distinto. Los instructores van observando a cada alumno y en el transcurso los van guiando a través de cada práctica.
¨Everybody can do Yoga. Depending on their body, we go on to do the adjustments.¨ Miranda commented.
“Todo el mundo puede hacer yoga. Dependiendo de su cuerpo hay que ir haciendo los ajustes” comentó Miranda.
The instructor has offered courses about stretching exercises and breathing techniques for the work environment. These are highly recommended for people who work in offices and don´t have much time.
La instructora ha ofrecido cursos sobre cómo realizar ejercicios de estiramiento o respiración en los entornos laborales. Muy recomendado para aquellos que trabajan en oficinas y no poseen mucho tiempo.
¨We believe in being part of the community and in helping the community¨, Miranda stresses throughout the conversation.

Every six months, the Centro has an event known as ´Campamento de Bienestar´ where they offer free courses based on donations, for the whole day. The money they collect goes to schools or education centers that need it.
El Centro cada seis meses realiza un evento conocido como el ‘Campamento De Bienestar’ donde se ofrecen cursos gratuitos a base de donativos por todo un día y del cual el dinero recaudado se le otorga a una escuela o centro educativo que lo necesite.
The products most sought after in La Paz are naturally based products like essential oils and deodorants. The highlights of the Centro are the peace that you perceive and the variety of services that it offers, as transmitted by the artistic structure and service. Beginners or experienced participants both can enjoy each one of the classes and share different processes in a family atmosphere, surrounded by empathy. These are recommended for beginning a journey in self discovery, healing, and to make adjustments toward a healthier life.
En La Paz los productos más buscados son los aceites esenciales y los productos con bases naturales como por ejemplo: desodorantes. A este Centro lo destaca la variedad de cosas que ofrece y la paz que en el se percibe. Transmitida por su estructura artística y el servicio. Principiantes como experimentados en cada una de las prácticas pueden disfrutar de una clase y compartir sus distintos procesos de una manera empática y familiar. Recomendado para comenzar un viaje de autodescubrimiento, sanación y para hacer ajustes hacia una vida más saludable.

Ha pasado un año desde que el Skatepark Municipal de It has been a year since the Municipal Skate Park of Rincon, Rincón reabrió sus puertas trabajando en alianza con la

Many people have been involved, putting their ´grain of sand´ to make the Park look sparkling. In that year, there have been activities like: skateboard competitions, clinics for schools and communities, after classes programs, educational movie nights and music events.
The first Saturday of April, April 1, 2017 we celebrated the first anniversary of the park with the event TRAYECTO. This was a full day filled of patinetera action, live music, artisans, exhibitions and much community involvement. In charge of the music were Dj Viking Will, Los Frenillos de Matias (Reggae), Constantly Crashing (alternative rock), Blacks En Tela, Red Nueve (Punk Rock) and Negro Gonzalez (Hip-Hop). The activities that day included: Skateboards competitions for all ages, student demonstrations from Mama Mel´s Learning Center, free haircuts by Omar Quiñonez from Rincon, coffee from Dulci Vita Coffee shop, tasty refreshment drinks from Jarritos, arts and crafts and local products. We will continue to work constantly with our local youth and we will soon bring more activities and events for the community of Rincon and adjacent towns. Fundación Patinetero. Ha sido un año de mucha labor transformando el espacio y manteniendo la comunidad activa y solidaria con el deporte de la patineta. Muchas han sido las personas involucradas que han aportado su grano de arena para que el skatepark luzca radiante. En ese primer año se han llevado a cabo muchas actividades tales cómo: competencias de patineta, clínicas para escuelas y comunidades, programas después de clases, noches de cine educacional y actividades musicales entre otras. El pasado sábado 1 de abril de 2017 celebramos por todo lo alto el primer aniversario del skatepark con el evento TRAYECTO. Un día lleno de mucha acción patinetera, música en vivo, artesanías, exhibidores y mucha comunidad. La música estuvo a cargo de: Dj Viking Will, Los Frenillos de Matías (Reggae), Constantly Crashing (Rock Alternativo), Blacks En Tela, Red Nueve (Punk Rock) y Negro González (Hip-Hop). Entre las actividades llevadas a cabo ese día hubieron: competencias de patineta para todas las edades, demostraciones con los estudiantes de Mama Mel’s Learning Center, recortes de pelo gratuitos por el barbero rincoeño Omar Quiñones, venta de café por Dulci Vita Coffee Shop, degustación de las bebidas refrescantes Jarritos y artesanías/productos de marcas locales.
