Defensa Animal de Rincón 2019 “My
1st Place / MO
MO was rescued from Añasco, where it was reported he had been tied with a rope on a hill, lost his footing and severely hurt himself, nearly chocking to death. It is also believed that MO had been abused and was living a very hard life anyway, so the decision was made to send him to a sanctuary in Aibonito. After Hurricane Maria, MO was stolen and missing for several months. Miraculously, MO was recovered, and moved back to Rincón . MO is now adopted and living a life of luxury, where he is in a stress free and loving environment. MO’s likes include: grazing, any food, kitties and doggies, a nice mid afternoon nap while being groomed, and companionship. MO has come a long way in the past several months and has really shown me how appreciative he is of living his best life. It can be very difficult for a horse who has been abused to learn to trust people, and Moopy has definitely learned to trust the great people who have aided in his rescue.
Mo, fue rescatado en Añasco, municipio donde fue reportado por estar atado con una soga en un cerro, haber perdido un pie y haberse lastimado severamente, hasta el punto en el que casi se ahorca. También, se cree que Mo fue abusado y que estuvo viviendo una vida muy difícil, por lo que no se habló más y se tomó la decisión de enviarlo a un santuario en Aibonito. Pero luego del Huracán María, Mo estaba tumefacto y estuvo desaparecido por varios meses. Milagrosamente, Mo fue recuperado y traído de vuelta a Rincón. Mo fue adoptado y actualmente vive una vida de lujos, viviendo en un ambiente lleno de amor y libre de estrés. Entre los gustos de Mo se destacan: pastorear, disfrutar de cualquier comida, la compañía de perritos y gatitos, una placentera siesta en la tarde mientras lo acicalan y la compañía. Mo ha llegado lejos en los últimos meses y realmente me ha demostrado lo agradecido que está de vivir y disfrutar de esta mejor vida. Debe de ser muy difícil para un caballo que ha sido abusado aprender a confiar nuevamente en los humanos y Moopy definitivamente ha aprendido a confiar en las grandiosas personas que han ayudado en su rescate.
2nd Place / Contessa We were driving down Flamboyan hill and she ran across the street. The next day, I was talking with Milena at the Mango Beach Shop, and in the conversation, she came up. Milena said “I know where that dog is!” She brought her to our house in less than 30 minutes! We originally were just going to foster her, but she’s so darn cute and has quite the personality- we were hooked!

Mientras manejábamos por la colina de los flamboyanes, ella corrió despavoridamente cruzando la calle. Al día siguiente, mientras conversaba con Milena en el Mango Beach Shop, ella surgió en la conversación. Milena dijo: “¡Yo sé donde está ese perro!”. ¡Ella la trajo a nuestra casa en menos de 30 minutos! Originalmente, nosotros solamente la íbamos a albergar, pero ella es tan hermosa y tiene una personalidad tan fantástica que automáticamente quedamos enamorados.

3rd Place / Stell Stell was rescued in Condado after living in the streets, park to park, and eating whatever anyone would feed him. Several of us noticed him because he was sweet to other dogs and wanted to say hi to everyone. He wouldn’t let us get very close, he just wanted to be around everyone. His eyes had little things in them and it was apparent that he needed help and that no one was coming to find him. We were able to rescue him one day and took him to the vet. He had heartworm, and is in recovery right now after a two shot regimen. He’s had all his shots and just needs to be neutered now!! He’s great with other pups and is so sweet!
Stell fue rescatado en Condado, luego de haber estado viviendo en las calles, deambulando de parque en parque y comiendo cualquier cosa que le dieran. Varios de nosotros nos dimos cuenta de su presencia por lo dulce que era hacia otros perros y porque siempre deseaba acercarse a saludar a todo el mundo. Sin embargo, él nunca permitía que nos acercáramos demasiado. Él solamente quería estar cerca de todo el mundo. Sus ojos tenían cosillas en ellos y era obvio que necesitaba ayuda y nadie venia a buscarlo. Finalmente, un día fuimos capaces de rescatarlo y pudimos llevarlo al veterinario. Tenía dirofilariasis y actualmente, se encuentra en recuperación luego de haber recibido un régimen de dos inyecciones. Al presente, él ha recibido todas sus inyecciones y solamente necesita ser esterilizado. ¡Él es genial con otros cachorros y es muy dulce!
4th Place / Lulu Lulu arrived at my yoga class about 5 years ago. She was an older puppy, about 7 months old. She was with 2 other dogs at the time and she left them and came to me and laid down on my mat and slept for the whole class. After class, I took her home. From then on, we have been in Love! She is a yoga dog and loves going back to class with me. She is my emotional support friend. Lulu llego a mi clase de yoga hace aproximadamente cinco años atrás. Ella era una cachorrita viejita, debía tener unos siete meses. Andaba con dos perros, pero los dejo para venir hacia mí, acostarse en mí tapete y dormir tranquilamente durante toda la clase. ¡Desde ese momento hemos estado enamoradas! Ella es una perra de yoga y adora ir a clases conmigo. Ella es mí gran amiga, mí soporte emocional.

5th Place / Luca This noble-eyed soul is familiar to many, as his story is amazing. Caught in the middle of the freeway, with a broken rope and broken chain around his neck, with a dislocated femur, both emaciated and terrified, Freeway, as he was baptized, had even bigger emotional scars. After a successful fundraising effort, he had surgery, and then the search for a forever home began, since we already had two dogs and lived in a small place. However, Freeway showed a huge attachment and gratitude to me each day, while at the same time, I realized that he probably knew only abuse, because he was fearful of everything and everybody. I was so torn because I knew we couldn’t keep him and also loved him so much that I wanted to care for him, so I moved earth and sky to find a larger home. One time, while being left momentarily in another location, he even ran away to look for me when he saw my car drive off. I was devastated, but amazingly he appeared two days later close to my home! I knew then that we were destined to be together, and my significant other understood that this angel was too important to me, so that we decided that where two dogs eat, three can eat too! :) We changed his name to Luca, so as to not remember his terrible past, and now that it has been ten months, my Luca is more and more confident, still extremely attached to only me, but loving every minute of his new life. When I open my eyes in the morning , all I see are those brown eyes staring back, as if acknowledging we were meant to be together :)
Esta alma con nobles ojos es conocida por muchos, su historia es increíble. Hallado en el medio de la autopista, con una soga y una cadena rota alrededor de su cuello, un fémur dislocado, demacrado y atemorizado, este es Freeway, nombre con el que fue bautizado y quien tenia cicatrices emocionales aún más grandes. Luego de un exitoso esfuerzo para recaudar fondos se le realizó una operación y luego, comenzó la búsqueda de su hogar para siempre ya que nosotros ya teníamos dos perros y residíamos en un espacio pequeño. No obstante, al pasar los días Freeway mostraba un gran apego y gratitud hacia mí, esto mientras yo me daba cuenta que probablemente él sólo había conocido abusos. Esto era obvio ya que le temía a todo y a todos. Me encontraba destrozada, sabía que no podíamos tenerlo, pero a su vez lo quería tanto que deseaba poder cuidarlo, así que moví cielo y tierra para encontrarle un hogar. En una ocasión, mientras tuvimos que dejarlo momentáneamente en otra localidad, el corrió para ir detrás de mí mientras podía ver como nos marchábamos. ¡Estaba devastada! Increíblemente, apareció dos días después cerca de mí casa. Desde ese entonces supe que estábamos destinados a estar juntos y mi pareja comprendió que este ángel era demasiado importante para mí, por lo que dijimos donde comen dos perros, comen tres. Cambiamos su nombre a Luca, para no recordar su terrible pasado. Ya han pasado diez meses y mí Luca es cada vez más seguro, aún muy atado solamente a mí, pero amando cada minuto de su nueva vida. Cuando abro mis ojos en la mañana, lo primero que veo son esos ojos cafés mirándome, como si estuviera dándose cuenta de que estamos destinados a estar juntos.
6th Place / Mucaro Múcaro was living on the streets of Sabana Grande as a six month old puppy when Hurricane Maria hit. He survived and continued to live the street life, surrounded by larger, more aggressive dogs. His fur was matted and he had parasites, but he was rescued and cared for and is now a beloved member of his family that includes another Puerto Rican rescue dog sibling. Múcaro was shy and timid for months but now he plays and loves and dances for his food. Page 10
Múcaro estaba viviendo en las calles de Sabana Grande, era un cachorrito de seis meses cuando el Huracán María azotó. Él sobrevivió y continuó viviendo en las calles, rodeado de perros mucho más grandes y agresivos. Su pelaje estaba apelmazado y tenía parásitos, pero fue rescatado y atendido. Ahora, pertenece a una familia que también incluye a un hermano perruno puertorriqueño rescatado. Múcaro fue tímido durante meses, pero ahora él juega, ama y hasta baila por su comida.

Litten el gatito, nacido detrás de un basurero justo en la 115 antes de que él y su hermano llegaran a nuestro hogar y robaran nuestros corazones.
8th Place / Ziggy Krupa Ziggy was rescued from Rincón 5 years ago. He has had many physical & emotional issues but he owns everyone’s heart who meets him. When he is happy, his whole body wags. When he is sad, his eyes tell the tale. Our Ziggy Bear has brought more joy into our lives than we could have imagined.
Ziggy fue rescatado en Rincón hace cinco años. Él ha tenido muchos problemas físicos y emocionales, pero él se gana el corazón de todos aquellos que lo conocen. Cuando él está feliz todo su cuerpo se zarandea. Cuando él está triste sus ojos relatan su pena. Nuestro osito Ziggy ha traído más alegría y dicha a nuestro hogar de la que jamás hubiéramos imaginado.
9th Place / Phoebe Phoebe was found wandering in the parking lot of Aguadilla Mall on a busy Friday night. We only planned to foster her, but she was so sweet & loving that we decided to keep her. Defensa was instrumental in allowing us to get her the care she needed, as we were brand new to the island & weren’t planning on getting a dog so soon. She is now a spoiled, dearly loved part of our family!
Phoebe fue encontraba vagando por el estacionamiento del Aguadilla Mall, una concurrida noche del viernes. Al principio, sólo pensábamos albergarla, pero ella era tan amorosa y dulce que decidimos quedárnosla. Defensa fue esencial para poder proveerle el cuidado que ella necesitaba, ya que nosotros éramos unos recién llegados a la Isla y no estábamos planeando adoptar un perro tan pronto. Ahora, ella es parte de nuestra familia, amada y consentida.
10th Place / Falkor While on vacation in Puerto Rico we found Falkor wandering around the kioskos in Luquillo- shop owners told us he had been there for a couple of weeks. He was practically hairless and very ill. We took him home to our condo, where he got food and a bath and a warm soft bed to sleep in. Off to the vet the next day who gave him his initial treatment, and then on the plane home to S.C. in the afternoon. He turned from an exhausted, feverish, sick puppy into this handsome young man with the cutest under bite ever, and he found the best family of his own!
Mientras vacacionábamos en Puerto Rico, encontramos a Falkor deambulando alrededor de los quioscos en Luquillo; los dueños de los negocios nos indicaron que él llevaba varias semanas deambulando por allí. Él se encontraba prácticamente sin un pelo y muy enfermo. Lo llevamos a nuestro condominio, donde lo bañamos, lo alimentamos y le dimos una cálida y suave cama donde dormir. Al día siguiente, nos dirigimos al veterinario, donde le dieron un tratamiento inicial y de ahí, en la tarde volamos de regreso a casa en Carolina del Sur. Él se convirtió de un cachorro enfermizo, agotado y febril a un joven y apuesto perro con la más hermosa sobremordida. ¡Él encontró a una gran familia para sí sólo! Page 11

Chaparro “To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.” – Freya Stark “Despertar en soledad en un pueblo extraño es una de las sensaciones más placenteras de este mundo.” – Freya Stark There is no better school than traveling, and allowing yourself to be victim of the effect provoked by discovering the other side of the world. To be a Puerto Rican is to grow up listening to all kinds of stories related to our origins, and what combinations of genes can be found in our DNA. All of this was still without including the authentic culture and tradition in which we have being involved with ever since childhood. It wasn’t until I had the opportunity of living in Spain, that I was able to realize where I really come from. It was a journey that immediately opened my eyes, just like the wide-open eyes of a cat. No existe mejor escuela que el viajar y ser víctima del efecto de descubrir el otro lado del mundo. Ser puertorriqueña es crecer escuchando todo tipo de historias sobre nuestro origen y sobre qué consta nuestro ADN. Todo sin contar la auténtica cultura y tradición que hemos sido partícipe desde el entonces. No es hasta que he tenido la oportunidad de vivir en España que pude ver realmente de dónde vengo. Un viaje que al instante abrió mis pupilas como las de un gato.
It’s true, that most likely you will always start from scratch in a new city, adapting to it and that its ways of living is something that isn’t going to happen from one day to another. To my surprise, two Andalusians arrived in my life and became the last missing pieces of my own puzzle; Julia Hidalgo from Granada and Francisco Rivilla from Córdoba, both of them native from the south of Spain. Finding out how similar our cultures and we, as human beings are, was something extraordinarily strange. Since then, I was able to understand where the thickness of my roots came from, and finally, that made me feel like I had just come home. The strangest thing that has ever happened to me was realizing, one, my accent and two, that the Boricuas are the Andalusian of América. We understand each other! Our similarities are amazing, from shortening words to dragging the letter “r”, the dialect, the sayings, the culture, the buildings that make our towns, and, most amazingly, the food.
Siempre que se empieza desde cero en otra ciudad, la adaptación no es algo que suceda de un día para otro. Para mi sorpresa, dos andaluces llegaron a mi vida haciendo que llegara la pieza final a mi rompecabezas. Julia Hidalgo de Granada y Francisco Rivilla de Córdoba. Ambos oriundos del sur de España. Descubrir lo similar que somos fue algo extraordinariamente extraño. Desde entonces, comprendí de dónde venía el grosor de mis raíces haciéndome por fin sintiéndome como en casa. Lo más extraño que me ha sucedido es darme cuenta uno, de mi acento y dos, que los boricuas somos los andaluces de América. ¡Es que nos entendemos! Desde acortar las palabras o simplemente arrastrar la “r”, el dialecto, los dichos, la cultura, las edificaciones que componen nuestros pueblos, hasta lo más emocionante, la comida.

The Andalusians are very festive. For them, everything is a good reason for a celebration or a get together with family and friends. They speak like us, even using the mannerisms. Just like the typical Puerto Rican, when the Andalusians speak, it seems like they are angry or fighting, but no, they are just speaking with a lot of emotion. Even in Granada, you will know when they are angry because of the extraordinary “malafollá granaína”, name given to the bad temperament of the Granadan.
Los andaluces son muy festivos. Para ellos, todo es motivo para hacer una fiesta y reunirse entre familia y amigos. Hablan como nosotros con todo y manierismos. Parecen que están enojados o peleando, pero no, simplemente están hablando con emoción, al igual que el típico puertorriqueño. Incluso en Granada, sabrás que están enojados por la extraordinaria malafollá granaína, que es el mal carácter de los granadinos.
When you visit Andalucía, you get the sensation that you are leaving the big city to connect with the real essence of what you would expect from Spain. Of course, that is despite the big cities like Madrid and Barcelona, even though the south of Spain is warmer. You can enjoy a joyful ambience, at gypsy or Arab markets that you can visit in the alcaicería, sevillana music that can be heard at the back, or the appreciation of a good flamenco. There, singing is what makes you live a true experience. The book by Washington Irving, named Tales of the Alhambra, remains in mind when you go out and traverse the south of Spain.
Visitar Andalucía es salir de la gran ciudad para conectar realmente con la esencia de lo que se espera de España. Claro, más allá de las famosas grandes ciudades como Madrid y Barcelona. Pero, aun así, en el sur de España es más cálido. Obtienes un ambiente alegre, mercados gitanos o árabes que se pueden visitar en alcaicería, música de sevillanas en fondo o la apreciación de un buen flamenco. Su cantío es lo que realmente te hace vivir la experiencia. El libro de Washington Irving titulado Las Historias de la Alhambra, se queda corto al recorrer realmente el sur de España.
To pass through the streets of Granada, or Mudé in Jaén, is a jubilant experience. To go out in town and see people playing dominoes, or to see in every corner a full stall at the time of eating. Let me tell you, the best tapas are found in Granada. They are crowned as the kings of tapas. That is without remarking on the fact that the best olives and olive oil that you can ever taste are found here. You take the word for that fact just by cruising throughout endless fields of olives and dream farmhouses.
Recorrer las calles de Granada o de Mure en Jaén es una gozada. Es salir al pueblo y ver las personas jugando dominó, ver en cada esquina un chiringuito lleno a la hora de la comida. Déjenme decirles, que las mejores tapas las encuentras en Granada. Coronándose como el rey de las tapas. Sin contar que las mejores aceitunas y aceite de olivo que puedas degustar, están allí. Lo das por hecho simplemente al pasar por infinitas cuerdas de olivos y cortijos (haciendas) de ensueño.

Even though we are so similar in so many ways there are some things that I have just been incapable of adapting to, even after a year. The Andalusians and the Spaniards generally go EVERYDAY to the supermarket, and if you are going to eat out, you order a round of beer and EVERYONE eats out of the same plate. This may cause a cultural shock at the beginning! It is still possible to enjoy an afternoon on the terrace with a warm coffee in your hands and to live the authentic Spanish experience.
Aunque somos tan similares hay cosas que hasta casi un año después no me he acostumbrado. Los andaluces y los españoles en general van TODOS los días al supermercado y si comemos fuera se ordena una ronda de cerveza y TODOS comen de un mismo plato. Lo que de primera causa choque cultural. Pero, no quita de disfrutar una tarde en la terraza con café en mano y vivir la auténtica experiencia española.
There are three places that you must visit in Andalucía; Granada, Sevilla and Jaén. Go, and then you will tell me if I’m wrong.
Nunca se espera encontrar la otra cara de la moneda tan pronto. Pues, tampoco había percibido lo tanto que corre España por mis venas. Lo que sí está claro es que mientras más viajo y experimento nuevas culturas más orgullosa me siento de haber nacido en Puerto Rico. No, no lo digo por decir que Puerto Rico es superior o por tratar de hacer menos otros países. Simplemente estas experiencias te hacen valorar tus raíces.
You never expect to find the other side of the coin so fast. Well, I had also never perceived how much of Spain runs in my blood. A true fact is that the more I travel and experience new cultures, the more pride I feel for being born in Puerto Rico. No, I don’t say it implying that Puerto Rico is superior, or to diminish other countries. Simply, that these experiences make you value your roots.
Tres lugares que son imprescindibles de visitar en Andalucía son Granada, Sevilla y Jaén. Vé y luego me cuentas que tal.

Five ways you can reduce your production of waste in Rincón Cinco formas en las que puedes reducir tu producción de basura en Rincón Written and translated by Cristina Nieves Labiosa For many of us, including myself, Rincón is a Caribbean paradise, an emerald island bathed by tropical waters, where many people come to enjoy its natural beauties. This is our home, but the truth is, we are also part of a bigger and even more beautiful home, our Mother Earth, and she needs our efforts to keep her healthy and beautiful. That is why we as a community need to start making changes in our daily habits, making every day one of less production of waste, and one with more conscious habits.
Para muchos, incluyéndome, Rincón es un paraíso caribeño. Una esmeralda bañada por aguas tropicales donde muchos disfrutan de sus bellezas naturales. Este es nuestro hogar, sin embargo, somos parte de un hogar aún más grande y hermoso, nuestra Madre Tierra y ella necesita de nuestro esfuerzo para mantenerla sana y viva. Es por ello que debemos como comunidad comenzar a realizar cambios en nuestros hábitos diarios, convirtiendo nuestro diario vivir en días de menor producción de basura y de mayor conciencia.
Maybe you wonder, what difference does one less plastic bottle of water or one less straw make in a world with over 7500 million habitants? The answer- IT DOES make a great difference. If we all start having a different mentality, one where we focus on less consumption, and more reuse, a change would be noticeable, and this amazing home that we call Planet Earth would be grateful for it.
Tal vez pienses, que diferencia hace una botella de agua plástica menos o un sorbeto menos, en un mundo con casi 7500 millones de habitantes. La respuesta, es que SI hace mucha diferencia. Si todos comenzamos a tener una mentalidad de menor consumo y mayor rehusó, el cambio será notable y el futuro de este hermoso hogar al que llamamos Planeta Tierra nos lo agradecerá.
Following, I’m giving you guys some advice from our Rincón community, on how we can start reducing our consumption habits, giving us a place in the world’s efforts to protect and save our home, Mother Earth, from so much trash.
A continuación, les doy algunos consejos de como podemos reducir nuestros hábitos de consumo desde nuestra comunidad rincoeña, ubicándonos en el esfuerzo mundial para proteger y salvar de la basura a nuestro hogar.
1. Reduce and reuse: Truly, one of the best ways to ensure that you are helping in reducing the excessive production of trash is consuming less. When you meditate about all the things that you buy, ask yourself how many of those are a necessity, and how many are an excess. When we reduce the number of things we consume, we are not only helping our Planet Earth, we are also helping ourselves economically. Also, try to reuse more than consume. There are so many things that can be given a new life, without having to buy them new. Use platforms like Pinterest to get inspired about how to reuse and give life back to objects that you thought were waste. Get inspired and be creative! 2. Buy in secondhand stores or at the Flea Market: Did you know that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, only surpassed by the oil industry? This makes me think, and ask myself; do we really always need to buy clothes at the mall? The obvious answer is NO. There are so many ways in which you can upgrade your wardrobe without having to spend or consume excessively. Shop at second hand stores or at the flea market. You can find great pieces like brand new at incomparable prices. Visit El Bazar Thrift Shop, in the town square of Rincón, or the Flea Market in Aguada, held every Saturday morning. Another way of upgrading your wardrobe is having a clothing swap with your friends. Get together, share, and swap! Page 26
1.Reduce y rehúsa: Ciertamente, una de las formas de asegurarte que estas ayudando a resolver el problema de la excesiva producción de basura es consumiendo menos. Cuando meditas sobre la cantidad de cosas que consumes, pregúntate cuantas de ellas son necesarias y cuantas son excesos. Al reducir la cantidad de cosas que consumimos ayudamos no solamente al Planeta Tierra, también te ayudas en tu economía. También, busca rehusar más que consumir. Hay tantas cosas que pueden ser dotadas de una nueva utilización sin necesidad de tener que comprar nuevas. Utiliza plataformas como Pinterest para inspirarte en como rehusar y dotar de vida objetos que considerabas inservibles. ¡Inspírate y se creativo! 2. Compra en las tiendas de segunda o en los pulgueros: Sabias que la industria de la moda es la segunda mayor contaminante del Planeta Tierra, solo superada por la industria petrolera. Esto me lleva a pensar y preguntarme, ¿realmente necesitamos comprar siempre ropa nueva en el centro comercial? La respuesta es obviamente NO. Hay miles de formas en las que puedes actualizar tu armario sin tener que incurrir en el gasto y el consumo excesivo. Opta por ir a las tiendas de segunda mano o los pulgueros. Puedes conseguir piezas a precios inigualables y en gran estado, casi como nuevas. Visita El Bazar Thrift Shop en el casco urbano de Rincón o el pulguero en Aguada, los sábados en la mañana. Otra gran forma de conseguir nuevas piezas de ropa para tu armario es llevando a cabo un intercambio de piezas con tus amistades. Reúnanse, compartan e intercambien.
3. Don’t ever drink bottled water again: In 2018, statistics show that worldwide we are producing 380 million tons of plastic per year. These numbers are alarming, and they should make us work together to change our actions. Change is better when it is applied to our personal actions, that is why one of the best ways to avoid the massive consumption of plastic waste is by carrying our own reusable water bottle. There are so many different options, styles and containers that can be used to carry water that there is no real need to consume a new disposable plastic bottle every time we need to hydrate our bodies with the elixir of life.
3. No vuelvas a consumir agua embotellada: En el 2018, las estadísticas mostraron que mundialmente se producen 380 millones de toneladas de plástico cada año. Estas cifras son alarmantes y nos llevas a comenzar a tomar medidas de cambio. El cambio se aplica mejor en las acciones personales, por lo que una gran forma de evitar el excesivo consumo de plástico es optando por llevar siempre una botella reusable de agua. Hay tantas opciones, estilos y formas de envases que puedes utilizar para cargar agua que no hay necesidad de consumir una botella desechable cada vez que necesitemos hidratar nuestro cuerpo con el elixir de vida.
4. Carry your own cutlery and straw: Going out to eat, is truly a delightful experience, especially so, here in Rincón, where you have so many delicious options. However, not every place uses reusable cutlery. That is why carrying your own set of tableware is a great way of ensuring you are producing less waste. You can get reusable cutlery at many different establishments and stores along the Rincón area, or at the Farmers Market on Sundays. Do the same thing with the straws. Carry your own reusable straw, and every time you want to enjoy a refreshing drink, use it. We can easily make change happen one straw and one fork at a time!
4. Carga con tus propios cubiertos y sorbetos: Salir a comer es definitivamente un deleite, y más en Rincón, donde hay tantas deliciosas opciones. Sin embargo, no en todos lados utilizan cubiertos reusables. Es por ello que cargar con tus propios cubiertos es una gran forma de evitar tu consumo de basura. Puedes conseguir cubiertos reusables en distintos establecimientos de Rincón o en el Mercado Agroecológico los domingos. De igual forma, puedes hacerlo con los sorbetos. Carga con tu sorbeto reusable y cada vez que decidas disfrutar de una refrescante bebida utilízalo. Haremos el cambio un sorbeto y un tenedor a la vez.
5. Always carry your reusable bags: We should feel very proud of our community in Rincón, as we have been able to make our paradise town one where single use plastic bags are banned. That is great, but we need to stop consuming plastic bags at supermarkets and other stores. That is why you should always, always, always carry your own reusable bag, because you never know when you are going to stop and purchase something that it turns out you need. Fold them neatly and make sure that you always carry at least one in your bag or in your car. I carry one in my makeup bag just in case I need to stop and buy something. That way, I’m always prepared and I don’t need to buy another reusable plastic bag.
5. Siempre carga con tus bolsas reusables: Debemos sentirnos muy orgullosos de nuestra comunidad, logramos convertir a nuestro paradisiaco pueblo en uno donde las bolsas plásticas de un solo uso quedaron eliminadas. Sin embargo, continuamos consumiendo bolsas plásticas en los supermercados y otros establecimientos. Es por ello que siempre, siempre, siempre debes cargar con una bolsa reusable ya que nunca sabes cuando vas a detenerte y comprar. Dobla tus bolsas reusables y encárgate de siempre tener una en tu bolso o automóvil. Yo, tengo una nítidamente doblada en mi cartera de cosméticos, cosa de que si me detengo en algún lugar y surge que necesito compara algo, pueda utilizarla sin tener que volver a comprar otra bolsa plástica reusable.
If we acknowledge these five changes and apply them to our daily life and consuming habits, change would happen every day, and waste production would be lessened. Let’s do it for our Pacha Mama, for our future generations, and just because it is the right thing to do: for a better, healthier, and more conscious world.
Si tomamos en consideración estos cinco cambios en nuestros hábitos de consumo diario, el cambio irá siendo cada vez mayor y la producción de basura cada vez menor. Hagámoslo por nuestra Pacha Mama, por nuestras futuras generaciones y por que es lo correcto. Por un mundo mejor, sano y consiente.

El Coqui, the Bookstore
El Coquí, la librería
Written by Michele Maks If you have ever gone to Artwalk or Rincon’s Farmers’ Market, Tony “Books” Guzman is a familiar vendor there. He and his wife, Rosa Gonzalez, are about to take Tony’s bookstand several steps further into the future by opening El Coqui Bookstore at 43 Calle Munoz Rivera, just a few blocks down from the plaza in Rincon. This is exciting news for the bibliophiles among us! The smell of freshly shaved sawdust from the handmade bookcases greets you as you walk through the door. El Coqui has an impressive 2500 square feet of space to hold the store’s huge collection of books. There are books in both Spanish and English, primarily secondhand for now, but with plans for new acquisitions eventually, and the capacity for ordering customer’s requests. There is a children’s area, a cheery corner with art and toys and plans for story time in both English and Spanish, hoping to encourage an emphasis on bilingual thinking. There will be a stage area for readings and open mic nights, hoping to draw from the large number of local talented poets and writers. There will be classes offered as customers demand. Tony and Rosa are interested in having this space thought of as a gift to the community of Rincon, to be used for educational and civic purposes. Immediately upon walking through the door, that energy and potential here is palpable! Page 32
Si alguna vez has ido al Artwalk o al Mercado Agroecológico de Rincón, Tony “Libros” Guzmán es un vendedor familiar. Él y su esposa, Rosa González, están a punto de llevar el puesto de libros de Tony a un nuevo nivel, uno de mayor progreso al aventurarse en la apertura de la Librería El Coquí, ubicada en la Calle Muñoz Rivera #43, a sólo unas cuadras de la Plaza de Rincón. ¡Esta es una emocionante noticia para los bibliófilos entre nosotros! El olor a aserrín de la madera recién cortada para la construcción de los estantes de libros es lo primero que te da la bienvenida al entrar por las puertas de la librería. El Coquí cuenta con un increíble espacio, 2500 pies cuadrados llenos de libros. Hay libros tanto en español como en inglés, primordialmente son libros de segunda mano por el momento, pero tienen planes de poder tener publicaciones nuevas y la capacidad de poder ordenar y suplir los deseos de sus clientes. Hay un área para niños, un alegre rincón con arte, juguetes y plantas para llevar a cabo la hora del cuento tanto en español como en inglés, esperando que esto aliente la necesidad de poseer un pensamiento bilingüe en nuestra comunidad. Habrá un escenario para lecturas y noches de micrófono abierto, esperando atraer a la gran cantidad de talentosos poetas y escritores locales. También, se ofrecerán cursos de acuerdo a la demanda de los clientes. Tony y Rosa, buscan convertir este espacio en un regalo para la comunidad de Rincón, convertirlo en un espacio para actividades educativas y cívicas.
Rosa was born in Mayaguez; Tony says he was first in Rincon in utero, before his family moved to New York. They met in New York and came back to Rincon for family reasons. Tony’s mom was a great reader and her love of books has now carried over into this wonderful large book lined venture. The evident love and respect of family in Rincon is something very dear to their hearts. The community is what is making El Coqui possible. Donations of time and money have been greatly appreciated. Sorting through books, building and filling the bookshelves is no small feat, especially in a space of this size. Ed Gibson (Okie) has been instrumental in getting all this shelving done. It is easy to see that as time goes on, there will be more and more book lovers involved. A curious customer who dropped by said it well- the only thing lacking in Rincon for her was a bricks and mortar bookstore, and now that desire will be taken care of! There is nothing more pleasant than to lie on the beach, reading a good book, and now that can easily happen right here in Rincon. The best of luck to Tony and Rosa and this new El Coqui! El Coqui’s grand opening is Friday, June 7, doors open at 6 PM. Hours will tentatively be 10-8, with days still yet to be determined.
¡Tan pronto entras por las puertas de la Librería El Coquí, puedes sentir palpablemente la energía y el potencial de este lugar! Rosa nació en Mayagüez; según Tony, él llegó a Rincón dentro del útero de su madre, antes de que su familia se mudara a Nueva York. Se conocieron en la ciudad de Nueva York y regresaron a Rincón por motivos familiares. La madre de Tony era una gran lectora y su amor por los libros ha llegado a esta grandiosa y revestida empresa de libros. El evidente amor y respeto hacia la familia que existe en Rincón es algo muy importante para ellos. El Coquí, está logrando ser gracias al apoyo de la comunidad. Las donaciones tanto monetarias como en el tiempo y cooperación, han sido grandemente apreciadas. Clasificando libros, construyendo estantes de libros y llenándolos, no son tareas sencillas, especialmente en un espacio tan grande. Ed Gibson (Okie), ha sido instrumental en la construcción de todos los estantes de libros. Se puede apreciar a simple vista, que mientras va pasando el tiempo más y más amantes de libros se van involucrando. Un curioso cliente que pasó por la tienda no pudo haberlo dicho mejor, “lo único que le hace falta a Rincón, es una librería física.” ¡Ahora, ese deseo será cumplido! No hay nada más placentero que acostarse en la playa, leyendo un buen libro y ahora eso puede suceder aquí mismo en Rincón. ¡Le deseamos la mejor de las suertes a Tony y Rosa en esta nueva aventura con la Librería El Coquí! La gran apertura de El Coquí será el viernes, 7 de junio de 2019, comenzando desde las 6pm. Tentativamente, la librería operará de 10am a 8pm, aunque aún se están determinando los días.

Convoy of Hope Rincón Caravana de Esperanza en Rincón
Photos by Chris & Nicole McClelland A year and a half after hurricane Maria passed over the island of Puerto Rico communities all over the island are still working to rebuild what once was. Convoy of Hope, a faith-based nonprofit organization, recognized Iglesia La Familia (The Family Church) in Bo. Stella of Rincón for their outstanding work, and together with their pastor, Jose Garcia, held an event on the 30th of March, 2019, with the goal of giving hope and love to families still struggling after Maria.
Un año y medio después del paso del Huracán María sobre la isla de Puerto Rico, todavía se pueden encontrar comunidades que continúan trabajando para reconstruir lo que un día fueron. La Caravana de Esperanza, una organización religiosa sin fines de lucro, reconoció a la Iglesia La Familia en el Bo. Stella de Rincón por su ejemplar trabajo y junto a su pastor José García, llevaron acabo un evento el 30 de marzo de 2019, con el propósito de llevar amor y esperanza a familias que aún continúan lidiando con los estragos de María.
Iglesia La Familia developed a crisis center after the hurricane where they provided essentials, such as groceries and toiletries, for those in need. In December of 2018, together with The Food Bank of America, they distributed a total of 3,000 bags of food to the community. Ever since, they have continued on their mission to serve the community, do good, and encourage others to do good as well. Page 38
Iglesia La Familia, desarrolló un centro de crisis luego del huracán donde proveían materiales esenciales tales como suministros y artículos de aseo para aquellos que los necesitaran. En diciembre de 2018, trabajando junto al Banco de Alimentos de América, ellos distribuyeron a la comunidad un total de 3,000 sacos de alimentos. Desde ese entonces, ellos han continuado con su misión de servirle a la comunidad, hacer el bien, y alentar a los demás a hacer el bien.

At the event, Convoy of Hope Rincón, they brought smiles to the youth by providing bouncy houses, arts and crafts, clown shows, and live music. Costa Salud Community Health Center donated free influenza shots, Santa Rosa Hospice provided free glucose screenings, MDF Instruments provided free blood pressure screens, a local group provided hands on CPR education, and the Red Cross went over hurricane preparedness. Over 44 free haircuts were given by Elizabeth Bonet, Maya Ayam, and Carmencita Perez, and there was also free henna art by Henna Vida. Free lunch was also provided and at the end of the day free bags of groceries were given out as well.
En el evento Caravana de Esperanza en Rincón, ellos brindaron sonrisas a los jóvenes con casas de brincos, arte y manualidades, espectáculos con payasos y música en vivo. El Centro de Salud Costa Salud donó inyecciones gratuitas para la prevención de influenza, el Hospicio Santa Rosa proporcionó chequeos gratuitos de glucosa, MDF Instruments proporcionó chequeos gratuitos de la presión arterial, un grupo local proveyó talleres educativos de RCP, y la Cruz Roja orientó sobre los preparativos que se deben realizar antes de un huracán. Más de 44 recortes de pelo fueron provistos gracias a Elizabeth Bonet, Maya Ayam y Carmencita Pérez, también, hubo arte de henna gratuita gracias a Henna Vida. Además, se les suministró un almuerzo gratuito y al final del día se les hizo entrega de sacos de alimentos gratuitos.
According to community member, Bernadette Kelly, “in the future we want to provide more events such as these for the community. There are still people struggling after the hurricane and we want to give hope back to them.”

Mango Salsa Recipe // Receta para Salsa de Mango This has to be one of my favorite recipes in the whole world. Perfect for summer time when there are plenty of ripe mangoes around. Goes great with fish or just as a dip with some corn tortilla chips. Mango Salsa 5-6 ripe mangoes chopped ½ a red or white onion chopped 1-2 green peppers chopped 1-2 fresh red chilies chopped (if you like a little heat) Plenty of chopped fresh cilantro Juice of one lime Salt to taste Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix together. Enjoy!
