Welcome Happy Holidays to all our readers and advertisers. It has been a good year for most of us. While the aftermath of October storm Sandy remains a sad story for those of us who have families or second homes in the US northeast, the fact that we are finally realizing that climate change is happening is a promising consequence of this tragedy. Here in Rincón we are experiencing increasing erosion of our beachfront. Some of the tourists were shocked. “Where is the beach?” a visitor asked. People will be happy to know that a group of citizens and scientists have begun to address the problems of beach erosion. A new Liga Ecológica has formed headed by the children of many of the original Liga members. It is great to see the second generations get involved in saving our beaches. Sea Grant, Surfrider Foundation Rincón, independent consultants and the municipality are all pooling resources concerning this problem which affects our quality of life and the town’s economy. We will report on their activities. Meanwhile, the Surfrider Foundation has its regular meetings every first Thursday evening of the month at 7 pm at the Balneario . Join them. Christmas is always a magical season in Puerto Rico from the first making of the coquito to drink to the last bite of arroz con gandules with your Three Kings celebration. There is typical Christmas music, parties, special recipes and my favorite thing of all…..decorations and lights everywhere. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are religious, family days – but then the town goes big- time party and fireworks for New Year’s Eve. All the hotels and restaurants will have special events for that night. And then, the biggest celebration of all – the Three Kings come to town. There will be a party in the Plaza sponsored by the Alianza de Líderes Rincoeños and one last time to exchange gifts and drink coquito (or the now legal Pitorro). Our 2011 Christmas issue with recipes and traditions is still available on our website www. elcoquiofrincon.com Enjoy yourselves and a wonderful 2013 to us all.

Para la mayoría de nosotros este ha sido un buen año. Y aunque los efectos de la tormenta de octubre Sandy es aún una historia triste para todos aquellos con familiares y segundos hogares en el área noreste de los Estados Unidos, el hecho de que finalmente nos estemos dando cuenta de que el clima está cambiando es una consecuencia prometedora de esta tragedia. Aquí en Rincón estamos sufriendo la erosión de nuestras playas. Algunos turistas estaban estupefactos. ¿Dónde está la playa? Preguntó un visitante. Les alegrará a muchos conocer que un grupo de ciudadanos y científicos han comenzado a bregar con el asunto de la erosión de la playa. Una nueva Liga Ecológica se ha organizado bajo la dirección de los hijos de algunos de los miembros originales. Es fantástico ver a las segundas generaciones involucradas en la salvación de nuestras playas. Sea Grant, los consultores independientes, de Surfrider Foundation Rincón y la municipalidad están aunando recursos para la resolución de este problema que aqueja la calidad de nuestra vida y la economía del pueblo. Les estaremos informando sobre sus actividades. Mientras tanto, cada primer jueves del mes, la Fundación Surfrider realizará sus reuniones regulares a las 7pm en el Balneario. Únase a ellos. La navidad es una temporada mágica en Puerto Rico desde la confección del primer litro de coquito hasta el último bocado de arroz con gandules en las fiestas de reyes. Hay música típica, música alusiva, fiestas, recetas de platos especiales, y lo que más me gusta… decoraciones y luces por todos lados. La Nochebuena y Navidad son días familiares y religiosos- pero para la despedida de año, el pueblo se anima con grandes fiestas y fuegos artificiales. Todos los hoteles y restaurantes celebran eventos especiales en esa noche. Y luego, la celebración mayor de las fiestas, cuando los Tres Reyes Magos llegan al pueblo. La Alianza de Líderes Rincoeños celebrará una fiesta en la Plaza dándonos una última oportunidad de intercambiar regalos, bebernos un trago de coquito, (o un palo del ahora legal Pitorro). Oxen Caravan / La caravana de los bueyes The month of December and the Christmas holidays cannot arrive in Rincón without the town becoming filled with colorful oxcarts. On the weekend leading up to the Christmas holiday, dozens of carts pulled by beautiful specimens of oxen parade around the town of Rincón, attracting thousands of spectators and participants from all over the island. In its sixth year, with the motto “From the mountains to the coast”, the now renowned Caravana de Yuntas de Bueyes de Rincón (Parade of Oxcarts of Rincón) will be held on the 22 and 23 of December, at the Plaza de la Amistad of Rincón. Activities will begin at 2pm on Saturday 22 with a day dedicated to children with entertainment, crafts, antique farm equipment displays, typical food and demonstrations of cow milking, plowing, yoking of oxen and transportation with oxcarts. On Sunday, December 23, the parade of oxcarts will take place starting at 12 noon. Originated by Freddy Ruiz Carrero, from Barrio Calvache, the Caravana de Yuntas de Bueyes de Rincón honors the oxcart drivers (carreteros), farmers, and the tradition and practice of transportation and plowing with oxen. “My maternal grandfather, Angel Carrero was a carretero, so I grew up surrounded by oxen and watching my grandfather transport

No puede llegar el mes de diciembre y las festividades navideñas sin que Rincón se pueble de carretones y yuntas de bueyes. En el fin de semana que antecede a la nochebuena y navidad, decenas de carretones tirados por hermosos ejemplares de bueyes se pasean por todo el pueblo de Rincón, atrayendo a miles de expectadores y participantes de toda la isla. En su sexta edición, y bajo el lema “De la montaña a la costa”, este año, la ya afamada Caravana de Yuntas de Bueyes de Rincón se celebrará los días, 22 y 23 de diciembre, en la Plaza de la Amistad de Rincón. Las actividades comenzarán a las 2pm el sábado 22 con un día para los niños con entretenimiento, artesanías, exhibición de equipo agrícola antiguo, comida típica y demostraciones del ordeño de vacas, arado de la tierra, enyugue de bueyes y acarreo con yuntas de bueyes, y el domingo 23, se celebrará la Caravana de Yuntas de Bueyes comenzando a la 12pm. Originado por el Sr. Freddy Ruiz Carrero, del Barrio Calvache, La Caravana de Yuntas de Bueyes rinde homenaje a nuestros carreteros, agricultores y a la práctica y tradiciones del acarreo, y el arado de la tierra con yuntas de bueyes. “Mi abuelo materno, el Sr. Angel Carrero era

Rincón has had a rich tradition of agriculture and sugar production since 1523 with the Bohío del Azúcar San Juan de las Palmas, the first sugar mill, which was operated by oxen and in 1890 the Central Azucarera Córcega, operated by hydraulic force. Rincón has a great sugar and agro-cultural heritage that is important to preserve. “I worked as announcer and narrator for Paso Fino and rodeo events and every year I participated in the National Oxen Fair of Camuy, a competitive event. I decided to create this parade in Rincón, more as an educational and community and family oriented event to help the younger generations keep alive our culture and traditions,” said Mr. Ruiz Carrero and continues, “I immediately got in touch with Joaquín Valentín, an oxen breeder from Barrio Cruces of Rincón who helped me with the first festival which I financed out of my pocket with my Christmas bonus.” At the time nearly over 13 oxcarts participated. Now, assisted by his wife Margarita Bonet, his daughter Yashi Ruiz, his son Zadit Ruiz and his son-in-law Danny Hernándaz who is responsible for public relations, the festival has grown. The Muncipality of Rincón and the Coooperativa de Ahorro y Credito as well as other local businesses sponsor the event and this year they are expecting the participation of more than twenty carreteros and over 12,000 spectators. Each year the festival honors two carreteros or farmers by surprise. This year the caravana will honor two young people who have participated each year with their oxen, “because these children have grown up participating in the festival.

Así que es lógico y natural que Rincón tenga a su haber un gran acervo cultural agrícola azucarero y es importante la preservación del mismo. “Me desempeñaba como locutor y narrador de eventos de paso fino y rodeo y cada año participaba en la Feria Nacional de Yuntas de Bueyes de Camuy, un evento de carácter competitivo. Decidí crear esta caravana en Rincón, pero más como un evento educativo, comunitario y familiar que ayudara a las nuevas generaciones a mantener vivas nuestra cultura y tradiciones.” Nos cuenta el Sr. Ruiz Carrero y prosigue, “Inmediatamente me comuniqué con el Sr. Joaquín Valentín, criador de bueyes del Barrio Cruces de Rincón, quién me ayudo en sus orígenes”. En principio el Sr. Ruiz Carrero, financiaba el festival de su propio bolsillo, usando su bono de navidad y contando con la participación de más de 13 carreteros. Ahora, asistido por toda su familia -su esposa Margarita Bonet, sus hija Yashi Ruiz, su hijo Zadit Ruiz y su yerno Danny Hernández, quien se encarga de las relaciones públicas, y con el auspicio del municipio de Rincón, la Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito de Rincón, y los negocios locales, el festival ha crecido,

We cannot say more because it’s a surprise,” Freddy tells us with a smile. For those of us who did not know what a frentil was, we found out that these beautiful and colorful ornaments that the oxen wear on their heads were not just for show. Freddie clarified that the frentil, which is made out of cloth, serves both to identify the animal and as a barrier between the rope and the head of the ox to protect it from lesions or abrasions. Part of the frentil serves as a barrier and the other part falls on the forehead of the animal resembling a kind of hat or turban. Despite the clarification, we still think the frentiles are, in addition to practical, very beautiful adding character and color to the oxen and this tradition.

Este año, la caravana honrará a dos jóvenes que cada año participan con sus yuntas en el festival, “pues esos niños y niñas han crecido participando en el festival. No podemos decirles más, pues es una sorpresa”. Nos dice Freddy con una sonrisa. Para aquellos de nosotros que no sabíamos lo que era un frentil, encontrábamos sumamente hermosos y coloridos los característicos y variados “adornos” que exhiben los bueyes en su frente. Freddy nos aclara que los frentiles no son ornamentación. “El frentil, el cual está hecho de tela, sirve tanto para la identificación del animal como para servir de barrera entre la soga y la frente del buey y así protegerlo de lesiones o raspaduras. Parte del frentil sirve de barrera, y la otra parte cae sobre la frente del animal asemejando una especie de sombrero o turbante”. Concluye Freddy. Y a pesar de la aclaración, seguimos pensando que los frentiles son, además de

Coquito Banana Sorbet Recipe Written by JoAnn Jagroop & Translated by Sandra Nía Rodríguez
In the tropics we have plenty of bananas and coconuts. So it’s not a far stretch to combine the two into satisfying iced treats and drinks. Coquito, a favorite drink, similar to eggnog, served during the holidays here in Puerto Rico, is made with coconut cream, condensed milk, rum and spices. There are dozens of recipes for Coquito, some with eggs and others without eggs, but they all require cream of coconut and some form of dairy milk. I can’t tell you how many gallons of Piña Coladas I made with Coco López Coconut Cream when I tended bars in St. Thomas, so this was my inspiration for making Coquito without eggs or dairy milk Sorbets are made without milk or eggs which makes them very appealing to those with dietary restrictions. They are guiltfree frozen desserts, very low in calories, made with fruit, teas, even chocolate…so refreshing. One way to keep sorbets from becoming ice-blocks is to add a little alcohol like wine, champagne or liqueurs. Spirits also enhance the flavor of the main ingredient. One night I poured a shot of Coquito over some banana slices and that inspired my recipe for a little egg-free, dairy-free Banana Colada Sorbet. Coco López Coconut Cream is condensed sweetened coconut milk invented by Ramón López Irizarry, a Puerto Rican. It’s readily available in grocery and liquor stores. This recipe is a no brainer and quick to make. You’ll find plenty of creative ways to use this Coco López Coquito besides this Banana Colada Sorbet.

En el trópico tenemos abundancia de guineos y de coco. Así que es normal que combinemos los dos en deliciosas bebidas y antojitos. El Coquito, una de las bebidas favoritas en Puerto Rico, que es parecida al ponche (eggnog), y que se sirve durante las fiestas, se prepara con crema de coco, leche condensada, ron y especias. Existen docenas de recetas de Coquito, algunas con huevo y otras sin huevos, pero todas requieren crema de coco y alguna forma de leche de vaca. No saben cuántos galones de Piña Colada confeccioné con crema de coco marca Coco López cuando trabajaba en barras en San Thomas y eso fue mi inspiración para preparar Coquito sin huevos o leche de vaca. Los helados (Sorbets) se preparan sin leche de vaca o huevos lo cual los hacen muy apetitosos para aquellos con restricciones en su dieta. Son postres de baja caloría, que se pueden ingerir sin mucha preocupación por la dieta, confeccionados con frutas y hasta chocolate… muy refrescante. Una forma de prevenir que el helado se convierta en cubitos de hielo es añadiendo un poco de alguna bebida alcohólica tal como vino, champaña o licor. Los licores realzan el sabor del ingrediente principal. Una noche eché un trago de Coquito sobre unas tajadas de guineo y eso inspiró mi receta de Helado Colada de Guineo libre de huevos y leche de vaca. La crema de coco marca Coco López, inventada por el puertorriqueño Ramón López Irizarry, es leche de coco condensada y endulzada. La puede conseguir en colmados y tiendas de licores. La receta es simple y rápida de preparar. Usted encontrará suficientes maneras creativas de usar el coquito preparado con Coco López aparte del Helado Colada de Guineo.
Banana Colada Sorbet Ingredients: • 4 cups over-ripe banana (4-6 medium bananas, peeled and mashed) • pinch of sea salt • 1/2 cup Coquito (recipe below) • 1-1/2 cups Coco López Coconut Milk (unsweetened) Method: 1. Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor, whirl until smooth. 2. Taste and adjust flavors if needed. Add 1/2 tsp of Banana or Coconut Extract if needed. 3. Chill thoroughly in the refrigerator, at least 3 hours. 4. Freeze in an ice-cream machine according to manufacturer’s instructions. 5. Transfer to a freezer safe container and freeze for at least 2 hours more before serving. Makes 6-8 servings If you don’t have an ice-cream machine, simply pour the mixture into a flat metal cake tin and freeze it for 2 hours. Crush the ice crystals with a wooden spoon until its smooth or whirl it in a food processor for a few seconds. Repeat this process a couple times and check for texture. It should be a smooth and creamy, not crunchy, spoonful of fruity ice. Scoop the smooth sorbet into a freezer safe container with a tight fitting lid and freeze for 2 to 3 hours.
Coquito (egg and dairy free)
Helado Colada de Guineo Ingredientes: • 4 tazas de guineos bien maduros (4-6 guineos medianos, pelados y majados) • una pizca de sal de mar • 1/2 taza de coquito (receta incluida) • 1-1/2 taza de leche de coco marca Coco López sin endulzar Instrucciones: 1. Vierta todos los ingredientes en una licuadora o procesador de alimentos y bata hasta que la mezcla esté suave. 2. Pruebe y ajuste la sazón si fuera necesario. Añada 1/2 cdta. de extracto de coco o guineo si fuera necesario. 3. Enfríe en la nevera por lo menos por 3 horas. 4. Congele en una máquina de hacer mantecado siguiendo las instrucciones de fábrica. 5. Vierta la mezcla en un recipiente apropiado para el congelador y congele por lo menos por 2 horas antes de servir. Hace de 6-8 porciones 1. Si no tiene máquina de hacer mantecado, vierta la mezcla en un molde plano de bizcocho y congele por lo menos por 2 horas. Aplaste los cristales de hielo con una cuchara de madera hasta que se torne suave o bata en una procesadora de alimentos por varios segundos. Repita este procedimiento par de veces más y pruebe la textura. Deberá de estar suave y cremosa y no granosa o como hielo. Ponga la mezcla del helado suave en un recipiente apropiado para el congelador con tapa apretada y congele por lo menos de 2-3 horas.
Ingredients:
Coquito (libre de huevo y leche de vaca)
• 15 oz can of Coco López - Coconut Cream (sweet)
Ingredientes:
• 30 oz (2 cans) Coco López - Coconut Milk • 8 oz (2 cups) Puerto Rican Rum of choice (Bacardí or Don Q are great) • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
• 1 lata de 15 oz de crema de coco endulzada marca Coco López • 2 latas (30 oz) de leche de coco marca Coco López • 8 oz (2 tazas) del ron puertorriqueño de su preferencia (Bacardí o Don Q son excelentes)
• pinch of sea salt
• 1/2 cdta. de canela en polvo
Method:
• 1/2 cdta. de nuez moscada
1. Whisk or blend all ingredients together in a non-reactive container. A gallon glass jar works great.

Although JoAnn has had many careers such as charter cook in the Caribbean, accountant and tax preparer in Alaska and the Pacific North West, restauranteur in the South Pacific islands, TV cooking show producer in Tonga and sous chef in New Zealand, food and writing about food has been a constant. She is a passionate creator of dishes using organic and local ingredients. Since her retirement to Rincón she has stayed busy gardening, pickling and preserving local produce, giving crochet classes at Tres Puertas Gallery & Gift Shop where her rag rugs made of recycled tee shirts or plastic bags can be purchased. Luis Pérez Moreno An artist at stealing home / Un artista del robo del “home” “Did you know that the baseball player who holds the record in Puerto Rico for stealing home plate is a Rincoeño? You should write a story about him,” said my neighbors Félix Colón and Lydia Centeno as they handed me a folder of biographical material about Luis Pérez Moreno. Félix and Luis played softball together and have been friends for years.
“¿Sabía usted que el jugador de beisbol con el historial más alto de “robo de home plate” es un rincoeño? Deben escribir sobre él”. Me dijeron mis vecinos Félix Colón y Lydia Centeno mientras me entregaban un cartapacio con material biográfico de Luis Pérez Moreno. Félix y Luis jugaban softball y han sido amigos por muchos años.
The material was interesting and the newspaper clipping, a 1970 photograph of a serious young man holding a bat, was intriguing. Reading the material I found that Luis Pérez was born right downtown on Calle Comercio on September 28, 1943. He was the youngest of Saturnino Pérez Espinet and Susana Moreno Rodríguez’s four children. He loved sports, especially baseball. He joined the Rincón Police Athletic League as both catcher and pitcher. Then at age sixteen he concentrated on pitching for the Rincón Class A Team. His baseball career flourished and at seventeen he signed with the Double A Team – Los Tiburones (or Sharks) of Aguadilla as their pitcher for three seasons. He married Virginia Rios Sánchez in 1965 and had a son Luis Pérez Rios in 1971.

Al leer el material supe que Luis Pérez nació en el pueblo en la Calle Comercio el 28 de septiembre de 1943. Fue el hijo menor de los cuatro de Saturnino Pérez Espinet y Susana Moreno Rodríguez. Amaba los deportes, especialmente el beisbol. Ingresó a la Liga Atlética Policiaca de Rincón como lanzador y cátcher. Y a la edad de 16 se concentró en su desempeño como lanzador para el Equipo Clase A de Rincón. Su carrera en el beisbol floreció y a la edad de 17 firmó con Los Tiburones, el Equipo Doble A de Aguadilla, como su lanzador por tres temporadas. En el 1965 se casó con Virginia Ríos Sánchez y en 1971 tuvo a su hijo Luis Pérez Ríos.
In the 1970-71 Season he joined the Rincón Villanos and

became a national figure for stealing home eight times in his first season. He accomplished this difficult play sixteen more times in subsequent seasons for the Villanos. Thirty years later this record is unbroken and Luis Pérez continues to hold the title of the most successful stealer of home plate. I went to see Eddie González, Director of the Rincón Polydeportivo (Sports Stadium) and asked about Luis Pérez and stealing bases, especially home plate. Eddie, of course knows Luis Pérez, who continued to be active in coaching young people after his own baseball career finished. “Is it hard to steal home? “I asked. Eddie laughed. “Of course, “he said. “You are racing the ball which is always faster than a man. You have the catcher waiting right there to catch the ball and tag you out. You have the pitcher who knows what you are planning to do and wants you out. You have the third baseman who is watching you closely. You have to have timing, instinct and especially luck. Luis had all three. It is an amazing record.” The Luis Pérez of today is not a man to live in the past, although he was happy to give me a more technical explanation for his ability to steal home. He said the most important thing that he had was the powers of observation- especially of the pitcher. “I would watch and see if he looked at me more than once. I observed if he moved left more than right. I wasn’t the fastest runner, but I was the best observer.” When asked if he stole more bases from a left handed or a right handed pitcher, he smiled and said “I stole home from both!” When Luis, aged nineteen, was asked to sign with the St. Louis Cardinals he wasn’t able to accept the offer and by the time he achieved his record-breaking stolen home plates, he was thirty –three years old and winding down his career. He pointed out, however, that eight million people in the world play baseball and less than a thousand become professionals. “Being asked to sign was recognition enough “, he said. Luis went on to coach young people in sports. He worked coaching girls’ softball at the University of Puerto Rico in Aguadilla. He coached baseball and other sports in Aguada and Rincón. When asked about baseball and what sports in general have meant to him, he said “I have spent all my life in sports. From the time we were small and made balls from rolled up paper, this is what we loved. I have never been in sports for money – only for love of the sport.” I asked Luis if he saw baseball as a major sport for Rincón in the future. He was thoughtful for a minute and then said that he felt there was the interest. Boys like to play baseball and we have a stadium that was built with a baseball diamond and bleachers big enough to hold good sized crowds. If the

Fui a visitar a Eddie González, Director del Complejo Polideportivo de Rincón y le pregunté sobre Luis Pérez y el robo de bases, especialmente, el “home plate.” Eddie, por supuesto, conocía de Luis Pérez, quién se ha mantenido activo entrenando a jóvenes jugadores después de finalizada su carrera en el beisbol. “¿Es difícil robar “home”?” Pregunté. El Luis Pérez de la actualidad no es un hombre de vivir en el pasado, a pesar de que muy amablemente me ofreció una explicación más técnica sobre su habilidad de robar “home”. Mencionó que la cualidad más importante que posee es el poder de observación-especialmente al lanzador. “Yo lo velaba a ver si me miraba más de una vez. Observaba si se movía más hacia la izquierda que a la derecha. Yo no era el corredor más veloz, pero era el mejor observador.” Cuando le preguntamos si robo más bases de un lanzador derecho que un zurdo, él sonrió y dijo, “¡Le robé a ambos por igual!” Cuando a la edad de 19 años le propusieron a Luis firmar con los Cardenales de San Luis, el no pudo aceptar la oferta y para cuando él había logrado romper el historial de robo de “home plates” ya tenía 33 años y camino al retiro. Sin embargo nos hizo notar que de los ocho millones de jugadores de beisbol en el mundo, menos de mil logran hacerse jugadores profesionales. “El que me hayan hecho la oferta es suficiente reconocimiento”, nos dijo. Luis entonces se dedica a entrenar a jóvenes deportistas. Trabajó entrenando a jovencitas en el juego de softball en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Aguadilla. Fungió como entrenador de beisbol y otros deportes en Aguada y Rincón. Cuando le preguntamos qué ha significado para él el beisbol y los deportes en general, nos dijo, “He pasado la mayor parte de mi vida envuelto en los deportes. Desde pequeño, cuando hacíamos bolas de papel, esto es lo que

town wanted to sponsor and make baseball important again, everything is here to do it. It only takes the will of the people and the municipality. “The tradition of the sport of baseball was strong in Rincón. I would like these facilities to be used for more baseball for the town and for the young people. We could be instrumental in helping find new talent here at home. We could mentor young people and give them a chance to become great at the sport of baseball. I have been happy for myself to play and coach this game. I would do it all over again.”

Si el pueblo desea auspiciar y hacer que el beisbol sea importante otra vez, tenemos todo lo que hace falta para que suceda. Solo hace falta el deseo del municipio y de la gente. “La tradición del deporte del beisbol era muy fuerte en Rincón. Me gustaría que esas facilidades se utilizaran para más beisbol para el pueblo y para los jóvenes. Podríamos ser instrumento en el descubrimiento de nuevo talento aquí en el pueblo. Podríamos guiar a los jóvenes y darles la oportunidad de hacerse grandes en el deporte del beisbol. Me ha hecho muy feliz el jugar y entrenar este deporte. Lo volvería a hacer otra vez.”

Memories of Winter League Baseball How much fun is this? When we first came to Rincón we lived in a house that had a guest apartment. I got a call in early October to ask if we would let the head coach of the Mayagüez Indios rent the apartment for the Winter League Baseball Season. That began one of the most fun periods of my husband’s life. Tom Gamboa was the manager at the time and one of our perks as his landlord was he left us passes to all the games. We went to all the home games with a group of other baseball lovers from Rincón. We often car-pooled into Mayagüez and quickly learned the best and cheapest places to park and which part of the stadium you were least likely to be pooped on by the pigeons overhead. We had pinchos and Medallas for dinner along with piña coladas (with rum for my husband) and bags and bags of peanuts. And, by the way, the baseball was very good. I think we saw Roberto Alomar as a rookie, local hero Coco Cordero and the great outfielder, Doug Glanville – we saw them before they were famous. There was a live band Grupo Bacalao that was terrific at encouraging our side on to victory. Whenever the Indios (our team of course) scored a run there was a man dressed in an Indian costume who did an amazing run and slide on the top of the dugout. Sometimes we listened to the running commentary on the radio and learned all sorts of new words like “EL LANZADOR!” The next day we got to discuss the game with Tom who loved his Indios and Puerto Rico. It was a very happy time. Then things began to change. The Indios were under new management. Tom was replaced. The quality of the baseball game changed when “hot prospects”were not allowed to play Winter League because their team owners were afraid of injury. Then they tore down the old stadium to make way for the new one and the Pan American/ Caribbean Games. It took nearly two seasons for the new stadium to be constructed and our team played in Aguadilla. The pilgrimages into Mayagüez to see the Indios play became less frequent and then stopped. I missed them. I was excited to see the website Puerto Rico Day Trips do a feature on Winter League Baseball. Check out www. puertoricodaytrips.com –It brought back all my wonderful

¿Cuán divertido es ésto? Cuando nos establecimos en Rincón vivíamos en una casa con un departamento para huéspedes. A principios de octubre de ese año recibimos una llamada para pedirnos le alquiláramos el departamento al entrenador de los Indios de Mayagüez durante la temporada de beisbol invernal. Con este suceso comenzó unos de los periodos más divertidos en la vida de mi esposo. Tom Gamboa era el gerente del equipo y uno de nuestros beneficios como caseros era que él nos obsequiaba pases para todos los juegos. Asistíamos a los juegos locales con un grupo de amantes del beisbol de Rincón. A menudo viajábamos en el mismo carro y rápidamente conocimos los estacionamientos mejores y más baratos y en que parte del estadio era menos probable que el carro no se llenara de heces de paloma. Para la cena comíamos pinchos y bebíamos Medalla con piña colada (con ron para mi esposo) y muchísimas bolsas de maní. Y por cierto el beisbol era excelente. Creo que vi a un joven Roberto Alomar y a Coco Cordero, un favorito local y Doug Glanville, un gran jardinero, – los vimos antes de que fueran famosos. Estaba el Grupo Bacalao, una banda que tocaba música en vivo y que era excelente motivando a nuestro lado hacia la victoria. Cada vez que los Indios (nuestro equipo, por supuesto), se apuntaban un cuadrangular había un hombre vestido de indio que realizaba una rutina asombrosa sobre la caseta. A veces escuchábamos la narración del juego en la radio y aprendíamos todo tipo de nuevas palabras tales como “¡EL LANZADOR!” Al otro día conversábamos sobre el juego con Tom, quien adoraba a sus Indios y a Puerto Rico. Eran tiempos muy felices. Entonces todo comenzó a cambiar. Los Indios estaban bajo nueva administración. Reemplazaron a Tom. La calidad del beisbol cambió cuando no se les permitía a “los candidatos más deseables” jugar durante la temporada de beisbol invernal pues los dueños de los equipos temían que estos fueran a lesionarse. Luego demolieron el viejo

All Indios (Los Indios de Mayagüez) home games are played in the new stadium — Estadio Isidoro “El Cholo” García in Mayagüez – the lower road by the bay. In addition to Winter League games, if you really love baseball you don’t even need to leave Rincón. Eddie González, director of the Rincón Polydeportivo, (Sports Stadium), suggests that you visit either his page on Facebook- Eddie N. González González or go over to his office at the Polydeportivo and find out who is playing and when try-outs are for the teams. You can also call the office at 787823-9535 for information. The Youth League (ages 16-18) season began in September and ended in November. The games this year were well attended and the try-outs for the team next year will be in August 2013. Little League will begin in January. The first meeting with the coaches was held on November 27th. These games are fun to watch and a great way to get your children interested in the sport of baseball. There is a relatively new program call RBI (Reviving Baseball for the Inner Cities). The RBI will have two teams this year in Rincón. Its director is Eddie Rodríguez who is also a professional private coach. En el 2011 creamos el proyecto Extreme Unit Project, organizado por Casa Abierta de las Bellas Artes en unión a la escuela intermedia Jorge Seda Crespo como respuesta a la necesidad de crear un ambiente sano tanto dentro como fuera del plantel escolar.
The Extreme Unit Project was created in 2011 by the la Casa Abierta de la Bellas Artes (Open House of Fine Arts) and the Jorge Seda Crespo Middle School as a response to the need to create a healthy environment on and off the school campus. I recognized the importance of extreme games for our youth since I had practiced them for many years, and at my age, I still participate in several of them. So I took upon the task of developing a project in collaboration with several community organizations of Rincón with the purpose of engaging our students so they will become excited to go to school, help them understand that discipline is the key to success and to create a healthy environment for them both at school and in the community. We also aspire to promote social values, prevent school desertion, improving interpersonal relations and discipline through the new styles that extreme sports offer.” The organizations participating in this project are: Patinetero: Patinetero (Skateboarding) in your School Project Department of Sports and Recreation: Non- Motorized Water Sports Project Page 44
Reconozco la importancia de los juegos extremos en nuestra juventud pues durante años los practiqué y a mi edad todavía participo de varios de ellos. Así que me di a la tarea de desarrollar un proyecto en colaboración con diferentes organizaciones comunitarias de Rincón con el propósito de envolver a los estudiantes a tal punto que se sientan entusiasmados de asistir a la escuela, ayudarles a entender que la disciplina es la clave del éxito, y crear un ambiente sano tanto en la escuela como en la comunidad. También aspiramos a promover los valores sociales, combatir la deserción escolar, mejorar las relaciones interpersonales y la disciplina a través de los nuevos estilos que ofrecen los deportes extremos. Alegórico Los Zanqueros : Stilt Walking Physical Education Program at the Jorge Seda Crespo Middle School Guidance and Social Work Program at the Jorge Seda Crespo Middle School Kroniko Arte The students in the Extreme Unit Project participate in these extreme sports during off school hours and are visited in the school by the community leaders, who act as their coaches and trainers, to monitor, along with the Jorge Seda Crespo School, their performance and progress. Recognizing the effort of these young people in and out of school, we have established a reward and incentive system with things like shirts, hats, trips, registration in competitions, the basic necessities required for the extreme sport they practice, and more. It was my original plan to bring in 25 students, but the reception has been so great that we currently have eighty-five students registered, with more joining every day. The results so far have been so great that we have received requests from other schools and school districts to participate. We invited Patinetero, a non-profit organization created by Héctor “Chagy” Vargas with the purpose of promoting social values, interpersonal relations, culture and discipline through the art
En el programa EXTREME UNIT PROJECT los estudiantes participan de estos deportes extremos fuera del horario escolar y reciben visitas en la escuela de los líderes comunitarios (coaches) que los entrenan para monitorear junto a la Escuela Jorge Seda Crespo su desempeño y progreso. Dado el esfuerzo de estos jóvenes dentro y fuera del horario escolar, hemos establecido un sistema de recompensas y remuneraciones por su labor, como por ejemplo: camisetas, gorras, excursiones, inscripciones a competencias, artículos de primera necesidad del deporte extremo que practican, entre otros. Cuando creé el concepto, el objetivo era envolver a solo 25 estudiantes, pero la acogida ha sido tan grande que tenemos una matrícula de 85 estudiantes y todos los días son más los que llegan. El resultado hasta hoy ha sido muy exitoso, y ya estamos recibiendo invitaciones de otras escuelas y distritos escolares para participar del mismo. Invitamos a PATINETERO, organización sin fines de lucro creada por Chagy Vargas con el propósito de promover los valores sociales, las relaciones interpersonales, la cultura y la disciplina a través del deporte (arte) de la patineta. of skateboarding. It has been a great experience. Chagy is a young man full of enthusiasm and dedication. He has become an effective mentor both on and off campus. Another positive aspect for the program has been the participation of Isela Ruiz of the Aquatic School at the Marina. Her discipline and passion for young people is evident when you see the students gathering on the beach every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. I cannot fail to mention Ms. Marta De Santiago, physical education teacher at the Jorge Seda Crespo Middle School. Marta is not only a leader, but an active participant of the Aquatic School with her husband and daughter. And of course, my friends at Kroniko Arte, who created the logo, Tshirts and all the art for the project.

Y claro, a mis amigos de Kroniko Arte, creadores del logo, las camisetas y todo lo artístico que envuelve este proyecto.
