The Pursuit of Justice: Perry Mason, Local Author Erle Stanley Gardner, and the Case for the Defense
Erle Stanley Gardner was one of the top-selling writers of his day. A lawyer himself, he was keenly aware of the legal system and its problems. His Perry Mason books—as well as the early films and later the highly successful TV series/movies—were about a defense attorney who always fought for the innocent to see justice prevail. In real life, Gardner also worked on The Court of Last Resort, a project where people who had been wrongly convicted would appeal for help in gathering evidence to get a new trial and hopefully overturn the original miscarriage of justice.

History of Baseball in San Diego
Few people know that the first baseball game played in San Diego took place in 1871. The game was played on an amateur and semipro level until 1936, when the original San Diego Padres joined the Pacific Coast League, considered one step below Major League Baseball. The PCL Padres existed until 1969, when San Diego joined the MLB. The MLB Padres have been largely unsuccessful in the 54 years of their existence, but hope springs eternal. I will tell this story from the perspective of one who has lived and died with the Padres since the last days of their PCL franchise.

OSHER VOLUNTEERS
We would not be able to provide our exceptional programming and services without the work and support of our dedicated volunteers. Please consider joining a committee, supporting special projects, assisting as a classroom ambassador or distributing catalogs in the community. We welcome your participation!
This talk will cover the steps leading up to the Pearl Harbor attack, starting with the Japanese Expansion in the Pacific after WWI. The Imperial Council approved Yamamoto’s plan in July 1941 to attack the U.S. The six Japanese carriers and surrounding ships sailed under radio silence on Nov. 26, 1941. The fleet headed north of Hawaii in order to destroy the U.S. fleet in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. The implications the U.S. carriers were not to be at Pearl Harbor will be discussed.
