Six Archaeological Conundrums From Prehistoric Times to the Iron Age From early prehistoric times to the Biblical era, the Ancient Near East has offered its students a plethora of puzzles, problems and conundrums in understanding the origins of civilization and of the foundations of our modern religious ideologies. Archaeology and related sciences (including, but not limited to, paleontology, anthropology, archaeology, demography, Assyriology, Egyptology, Semitic epigraphy and paleography) offer insight into many of these conundrums. Our course will survey six of the most complex and challenging of these. MONDAYS, FEB. 12 - MARCH 18 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 6 weeks $95 David Meir-Levi, MA

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson: How Arthur Conan Doyle’s Creations Popularized the Detective Story The Game’s Afoot! Arthur Conan Doyle actually would have preferred that his literary creation had stayed dead after he sent him over a waterfall in an early story. However, his detective was too popular to stay dead for long. We’ll trace the stories from Doyle to modern-day versions of Holmes and examine his popularity. MONDAY, APRIL 8 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 1 day $18 Kim Keeline, PhD

How the European Enlightenment Intellectually Promoted America’s Revolution

Intellectual migration occurs when artists, writers, scholars and intellectuals leave their home countries due to conflicts, political persecution or other adverse circumstances and settle in a different country. These migrants often bring their ideas, artistic expressions and intellectual contributions, enriching their host countries’ cultural and academic life. In this course, we will witness how America’s cultural landscape was improved by those who, risking life and freedom, came to our shores to express their art and wisdom.

After the European Renaissance, Europe started to experience an enlightenment period. While various factors contributed to the emergence of the Enlightenment, including intellectual and cultural developments, the correlation between economic prosperity and relative peace in some European regions helped create a conducive environment for the spread of enlightenment ideas. Brilliant European minds merged to mold a new human rights and intellectual development reality. These revolutionary ideas traveled deep and far and found a home in the colonies, contributing to radical change postures conducive to extreme endeavors such as the U.S. independence movement.

The Modern History of Jerusalem

Jerusalem is a city of layers. It has been affected by numerous cultures and empires, built up for thousands of years, and sought after by multiple monotheistic religions. It has a depth of history that is almost unparalleled. And yet, outside of its ancient history, its modern history is also complex. In the last 150 years, it has been ruled by many groups including the Ottomans, the British, the League of Nations, Jordan and the State of Israel. Why have so many groups made their mark

The Doolittle Raid: April 18, 1942 The Doolittle Raid on Japan was America’s top-secret response to the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. For the first time in its history, Japan was successfully attacked by an outside enemy force, and for the first time in their careers, Doolittle Raid pilots were asked to execute a daring launch in B-25 bombers from a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier in heavy seas with 30-foot waves. This is a story of a daring, perilous, high-stakes gamble to attack Japan with 80 brave U.S. Army Air Force pilots, 18 U.S. Navy warships and 10,000 U.S. Navy personnel. This is also the story of 80 men who volunteered to conduct a nearly impossible mission that humiliated the Japanese military and raised the morale of America in very perilous times for the nation. The course will be led by a retired U.S. diplomat who worked for years in the region, including with Israelis and Arabs in all the key countries, with presentations tailored to your interests and concerns through personal stories and clear analysis. Seven Presidential Elections That Changed the United States With the 2024 presidential election approaching, this class examines seven presidential elections that were particularly significant in American history. The earliest of these occurred in 1800, which featured the first transfer of power between political factions in the fragile young nation’s history. Six more elections would follow, including one that led to the Civil War and the only election ever to be decided by the Supreme Court. This survey will culminate with the potentially fraught transfer of power in 2020. Dialogue about these and other significant elections will become welcomed and, indeed, encouraged. How America’s Discovery Promoted and Financed Europe’s Renaissance The discovery of America by Europeans in the late 15th century had profound and far-reaching consequences for both the Europeans and the Indigenous populations of the Americas. Before, Europe was already experiencing economic growth and expansion, but its trade routes and commerce depended on the Silk Road and the east territories plagued by mediators’ interests, warlords, political adversaries and bandits. They needed new ways and supply chains. Then came the Columbian exchange, and everything changed forever. PROGRAM LINKS

Bob Hamer spent three years undercover in Operation Smoking Dragon, an FBI investigation targeting an Asian criminal syndicate operating in the United States, China and North Korea. What began as an investigation of counterfeit cigarettes evolved into other counterfeit goods, stolen cars, drugs, shoulder-fire missiles manufactured by the Chinese, and near-perfect counterfeit U.S. $100 bills manufactured by the North Korean government.

FRIDAYS, FEB. 16 - APRIL 19 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Online via Zoom 10 weeks $155 Laurie Richards

A Willow Tree Becomes a Forest Set in the Pacific Northwest from 1877 through 1925, this is a story of the American West with a twist. Hop Lee is a teenage Chinese boy who came to America armed with a calligraphy brush, a blank journal, a fortune teller’s scroll that foretold his life’s journey, and a burning desire to become American. The story celebrates the immigrant American spirit but is also set against the anti-Chinese attitudes that defined the Chinese Question in the 1800s. Washing laundry, selling poultry and growing hops brought Hop Lee success, and friendships with bankers, publishers and politicians, but his dream of becoming an American was ever elusive. For those interested, books will be available for purchase in class. TUESDAY, JAN. 16 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. CSUSM ELB 470: Hybrid* Free for Members Russell Low

Tour of Republic Services in Carlsbad Republic Services has been in the Greater San Diego area for some time and in Carlsbad for 20 years, and they are adding to their services. During our visit, the Osher group will be divided, with half participating in a questionand-answer session with Rodrigo, manager at Republic Services, who will address the updates. Another company representative, Jenna, will lead a half-mile walking tour to explain the operations and then lead an experience of using their mulch and planting a flower to take home. The groups will then switch. Jenna and Rodrigo are excited to host the Osher at CSUSM group because they are both CSUSM alumni! For safety, we will be given official vests to wear and closed-toe shoes will be required; no sandals are allowed. Parking is limited to eight spaces, so guests are encouraged to carpool or park on the street. THURSDAY, MARCH 21 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. 5960 El Camino Real, Carlsbad 1 day $18 Republic Services: Recycling Center
