This fantastic adventure includes the great Mayan cities of Tikal (Guatemala), Copan (Honduras), Caracol (Belize), Palenque, Uxmal, Chichen Itza and Tulum (Mexico). We also journey to seldom visited Calakmul, Tikal’s great rival. We also explore remote Yaxchilan, accessible only by boat before crossing the border into Guatemala. The demise of the Mayan civilization - the end of the world as foretold in the astrology and beliefs of the Mayan, have long created intrigue and mystery. Our Central American journey includes so much more than Mayan ruins. We explore lagoons and rivers teeming with birds as well as monkeys, crocodiles, turtles and much more. Experience the Caribbean culture of Livingston and the traditional indigenous cultures of Lake Atitlan and Chichicastenango, featuring its vibrant and colorful Thursday market. And, we cannot forget about the colonial gems of Merida, with the oldest cathedral in the Americas, the seaside fortress of Campeche, Lake Atitlan, surrounded by 3 volcanoes and finally Antigua, a true colonial masterpiece! We hope you can join ElderTreks’ unique journey to the Mayan world that promises to be nothing short of memorable.

Come and visit 2 of Central America’s least visited countries. El Salvador and Nicaragua! In El Salvador, visit the ancient Mayan sites of Joya de Ceren, Tazumal and San Andreas. Enjoy the relaxing pace of the indigenous colonial towns, coffee plantations and markets of Ruta de Las Flores (Flower Route). Visit a turtle sanctuary and help to tag resident turtles. Enjoy a scenic flight over active San Miguel volcano enroute to remote Perquin, the former mountain headquarters of the communist guerrillas during the Civil War. We will learn about what really happened including the shameful government massacres of civilians. You will meet our local guide, a former communist guerrilla at the age of 10. His story is sad, shocking and yet inspiring! We leave El Salvador by private ferry to Nicaragua. Our first 4 nights are shared between 2 of the most beautiful colonial cities in the Americas; Leon (the oldest city in America, est. 1525) and Granada. We visit Masaya Volcano and market and try local cuisine during a cooking lesson. Enjoy time on Omotepe island, formed by 2 volcanoes in Lake Nicaragua. We visit preColombian petroglyphs, a butterfly farm and a local church that has its own ‘indigenous Jesus’. On the Pacific coast, we visit a turtle sanctuary which has several major turtle migrations to lay eggs between July and January each year. If we visit during a major migration, the site is truly magnificent! If the beach has no turtles, we can visit, learn about the turtles and go for a swim at this pristine white sand beach. Always keep an eye out for monkeys! Our last stop is the capital of Managua, where we enjoy a city tour and our farewell dinner.

The non-preditorial environment of Darwin’s Galapagos has created a non-threatening, relaxed and magical connection with wildlife unlike any other on earth. Our 11-day Galapagos adventure starts and finishes in the colonial capital of Quito, nestled in the Andes. Enjoy a scenic city tour, taking in the sites and sounds and admiring the colonial architecture. The short flight to Baltra delivers us to our comfortable yacht. Watch for dolphins riding the bow, like oceanic messengers taking us to our next equatorial volcanic island, each with its unique endemic species perfectly adapted to its environment. Pink flamingos, Galapagos penguins, giant tortoises and a myriad of birdlife, including the fish-stealing frigate and the enormous albatross, are just some of the wildlife we encounter during our naturalist guided adventure. The lost world of Venezuela is a destination with snow-capped peaks of the Andes, abundant wildlife in the Llanos, beautiful coastline, lush jungle, indigenous tribes, interesting colonial history and friendly South American hospitality. Venezuela’s greatest natural attraction is the world’s highest waterfall, magnificent Angel Falls. Not only is Venezuela one of South America’s undiscovered travel gems, but a must see destination for adventure travelers. From the capital of Caracas, we fly to Merida, which boasts typical Andean culture and scenery, and is situated high in the mountains. The snow-covered peaks of the Andes create the perfect backdrop to the wildlife rich plains of the Llanos. We will encounter indigineous tribes, including the Pemon Indians of Canaima and also the Warao or “Canoe People” of the Orinoco Delta. The Delta is an intricate labyrinth of waterways
weaving through the jungle and supports extremely rich and varied wildlife including jaguar, puma, ocelot, red howler and capuchin monkeys, capybara, giant otters, manatee and pink dolphins and anacondas as well as extensive birdlife. We cap off our trip with a visit to the world’s highest waterfall, Angel Falls, situated in the vast, pristine jungles of Canaima National Park, which feature a unique geological feature known as “Tepuis” or table-top Mountains. We see many of the parks’ spectacular waterfalls and rivers which beautifully carve and shape the stunning landscape of Canaima. We will enjoy these beautiful surroundings during our scenic flight and a 3 hour boat journey through Canaima’s jungle enroute to Angel Falls. We overnight on the river which offers the opportunity to see the breathtaking view of sunset and sunrise on Angel Falls. Unlike many operators, ElderTreks provides various opportunities to see Angel Falls including a scenic flight, on foot and by locally-made canoes. At almost 1 kilometer high, the sheer size and height of the falls cannot be expressed in mere words or through photos and must truly be seen up close to be fully appreciated. From the world’s highest waterfall, to the peaks of the Andes Mountains, the lush jungles, indigenous tribes and abundant wildlife make this journey nothing short of an absolutely epic adventure.

Each winter gray whales migrate south from their arctic feeding grounds to breed and rear their young in Baja California’s and Mexico’s sheltered lagoons, making it one of North America’s premier whale watching sites. During our Baja Mexico cruise in the breeding lagoons of Bahia Magdalena, we venture among them in Zodiac landing craft. This gives us a water-level perspective for whale watching that is a rare privilege in the natural world. Also, it positions us perfectly for the increasingly common friendly encounters with these mammals that we’ve shared with our guests. Our Baja Mexico cruise expedition also offers Naturalist-guided walks on uninhabited desert islands, swimming, snorkeling and kayaking in the Sea of Cortez. The itinerary remains flexible to make the most of whale watching and wildlife sightings. Whales, dolphins, sea lions, birds such as blue-footed boobies and frigatebirds, huge cardon cacti, mangroves and sand dunes are among the wonders you’ll experience.

Aboard the Island Roamer. Cabins are small but comfortable, with shared facilities. The first night is spent in Sandspit.
This natural history sailing trip explores the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, in the southern islands of Haida Gwaii. These islands form a unique archipelago situated (50 miles/80 kilometers) west of Prince Rupert on British Columbia’s Northwest coast. Often referred to as Canada’s own ‘Galapagos’ the Islands of Haida Gwaii have a unique vegetation, wildlife and cultural history that has evolved in relative isolation over the last several thousand years. Evidence suggests that parts of the islands remained unglaciated during the last 10,000 years, offering refuge for animals and plants. The area is geologically active and has seen massive fluctuations in sea level. The islands are the epicenter of Haida culture and SGang Gwaay has been honored with a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During this spectacular adventure you will have the opportunity to visit sacred sites, feel the solitude of the wilderness, and experience the wildlife and Haida culture.
The Island Roamer
The Island Roamer is a custom 68-foot ketch, launched in 1983. The boat’s design, safety and comfort make it particularly well-suited for providing wildlife and wilderness trips for up to 16 guests. It features 8 private cabins (double occupancy), 3 heads with hot showers, a large comfortable lounge with an extensive library and a well-equipped galley. The boat is large enough for comfort and privacy and small enough to create a good rapport among the passengers and crew. The Island Roamer is a certified Canadian Ministry of Transport passenger vessel.

Accommodations 2 comfortable lodges in the mountains, all rooms with private bathrooms. Imagine hiking in a pristine area surrounded by stunning and surreal landscapes in the Canadian Rockies. Your accommodation is in comfortable lodges. Your guides are fully certified, professional mountain guides with years of training and experience. YOU choose how rigorous or how relaxing your day will be. And the final touch - you are delivered and picked up from this magical wilderness by helicopter. The scenery, the service, the experience does not get any better. Welcome to heli-hiking! We are offering a superb 7-day heli-hiking journey in the Columbia Mountain Range. Located on the western side of the great swath of the Rocky Mountain Trench, the Columbia’s are technically not part of the Rockies, but run parallel to it and are a stunning and little-known collection of peaks and ranges. A typical day of heli-hiking: after a great sleep and hearty breakfast, our helicopter delivers us to one of several possible starting points. We set out hiking and exploring, always at a comfortable pace, with long or short, strenuous or leisurely hikes to choose from. Our guests, not our guides, set the pace. Our guides are in constant communication with the lodge’s helicopter, so we may take two or three different hikes during the day. Our golden rule is flexibility and adaptability. Each day we immerse ourselves into different terrains, which could include being dropped in a meadow beneath a stupendous glacial cirque for a morning hike followed by a picnic lunch. With the help of our helicopter, we begin our traverse around a cobalt lake, all the time soaking in the mountain beauty and solitude. In the late afternoon, we fly back to the lodge for a massage, an outdoor hot tub soak or a sauna, a well earned, beautifully prepared dinner and some story swapping while sipping wine by the fireplace in our comfortable lodge. We hope you can join us and enjoy the magic that is heli-hiking.

Marine mammals should be plentiful— some of the best whale watching in Canada is concentrated between the high cliffs of Saguenay Fjord. Forillon National Park and Île-Bonaventure Provincial Park offer spectacular wildlife opportunities, including numerous migrating seabirds. The Magdalen Islands’ mix of Acadian and English influences and a history of more than four hundred shipwrecks are among their unique features. They are also home to endangered bird species, including the piping plover and roseate tern. A stop at Cape Breton, famed for its rocky shores, glacial valleys, and barren headlands, is sure to be a highlight. We’ll also visit Prince Edward Island—Canada’s smallest province, and the birthplace of Confederation. We bring our voyage to a close at SaintPierre, the last remaining outpost of New France, where fine wine, good cheese and French fashion are to be found—just off the coast of Newfoundland.

This summer sailing is ideally timed for whales, icebergs, and breeding seabirds. The island’s rugged charm and geographic diversity are best appreciated when visiting by ship. At Gros Morne, the planet’s mantle frames fjords that would be at home in Norway; on the Avalon Peninsula, a chunk of what was once Africa meets remnants of the Appalachian Mountains. We will visit Red Bay, learn about the Viking history in North America at L’Anse aux Meadows, and visit the legendary French Shore Tapestry at Conche. Starting and ending in historic St. John’s, we experience Newfoundland’s lively culture and dramatic scenery in daily expedition stops. A visit to the French island of Saint-Pierre caps the adventure. The welcome we receive in Newfoundland’s outport communities is warm and genuine; the music and stories unforgettable.
