W
e are proud to feature three important private collections in this sale – a collection of scrimshaw from Falmouth, Massachusetts, the MacCormick Scrimshaw Collection, and a prominent New York Collection of maritime art. All three have been in the making for many years. The Falmouth collection was formed by friends of Bill Bourne’s grandparents and many of the pieces were purchased at the sale of the Bennett Collection, held at the Richard A. Bourne Company in 1965. Alexander MacCormick began his scrimshaw collection in the 1960s, as evidenced by the captivating and meticulous record he kept (see page 35). Of course, many pieces in the sale have provenance to the seminal Barbara Johnson Whaling Collection, including the extraordinary illustrated whaling journal we are offering as Lot 1. It’s been in a private collection since it was purchased at the Sotheby’s auction in 1983. It’s possibly the best we have ever seen and we are truly honored to bring it, as well as these other collections, to market. We recognize building these collections takes time, financial investment and a driving passion, and we recognize the myriad complexities that arise when it becomes time to sell. EXCEPTIONAL ILLUSTRATED JOURNAL OF A WHALING VOYAGE OF THE SHIP CHARLES CARROLL OF NANTUCKET Extensively and lavishly illustrated journal, possibly the best we have ever seen, covering a whaling voyage from Nantucket to the Pacific beginning December 1, 1848 and ending December 29, 1852. Titled on first page of entries “A Journal of a Voyage to the Pacific Ocean in Ship Charles Carroll Josiah C. Long, Master” and noted on third page of entries “From Nantucket bound to the Pacific”. Illustrated on nearly every page with colored ink and pencil drawings, for a total of approx. 279 distinct images. Illustrations include ships at sea, American and other flags, individual or pods of whales, whale tails, landscapes, barrels, turtles and other sea life. Some of the ship illustrations depict vessels flying large American flags off the stern, while others depict groups of ships, vessels flying differing country or agent flags, ships in rough seas, etc. Most of the illustrations of whales depict them with blood emanating from their blow holes, and many are marked “S”, “L”, “W” or “B” (for “Starboard”, “Larboard”, “Waist” and “Bow” boats) and notated with barrels of oils.
Most pages note the location of the ship in the upper margin, primarily in the same script lettering used for entries but occasionally in a different decorative font or in a different colored ink. Entries typically include latitude and longitude, notes on the weather and a brief synopsis of the day’s events. Earlier pages note the number of days out in the lower margin. The December 22, 1848 entry notes “Birth Day to Day 42 years old”. The Charles Carroll was off Cape Horn in March of 1849, north of the Equator in June 1849 and west of the Galapagos Islands “Offshore” in July 1849. The ship sailed throughout the Pacific, making note of the Marquesas Islands, Archipelago and Society Islands, the Island of Huaheine and other locations, and occasionally put into port on an island or along the west coast of South America. Margin title announces “Coast of Chili: Homeward Voyage” on September 19, 1852. The last entry reads “... Made some Sail at 2 Am saw Block Island at day light Gay head in sight at 8 took a Pilot off Holmes[?] Hole at 11 Am anchored in Edgartown so ends the Voyage absent 48 Months & 24 days turned out all totd 1085 Sperm 300 cont. Whale Sold oil 120 cts”.

Exeptional Illustrated Journal of a Whaling Voyage of the ship Charles Carroll of Nantucket cont.
Early and late pages with columns of figures totaling barrels of oil, lists of “Letters for the Following Ships”, latitudinal and longitudinal calculations, lists of “Number of Whales got by Each Boat” with columns for “Starboard”, “Larboard”, “Waist” and “Bow”, a list of “Number of Whales seen & by Whom seen”, a “List of Ship’s Spoken & Quantity of Oil onboard”, and a list of dates and notations about days before/after “Full”, “Quarter” or “Change”, probably phases of the moon. Also includes assorted ephemera, notably a pressed flower, a piece of Asian paper, a rudimentary plot plan, and the “Inward Foreign Manifest” for the ship Charles Carroll of Nantucket, Josiah C. Long, Master, owned by William C. Swain & others, granted at Nantucket November 29, 1848, listing barrels and collars onboard, their markings and owners. The Charles Carroll was built in 1832 for captain and 1/32 share owner Owen Chase, the first mate onboard the famed Essex. She went on two whaling voyages under the command of Chase from 1832 to 1840 and was under the command of Thomas S. Andrews for multiple voyages in the 1840s until Josiah C. Long became captain for the 1848 voyage covered in this journal. In 1844 W.C. Swain was listed as her owner. Research shared by Dr. Stuart M. Frank of the New Bedford Whaling Museum indicates “A Wing” was Andrew J. Wing, born in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Wing served aboard numerous whaling vessels, most notably as captain of the Canton, which ran aground in the Gilbert Islands, forcing the men to sail for 45 days in open boats to Guam. 9

PAIR OF POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE’S TEETH Second Half of the 19th Century Obverse of one depicts a spread-wing eagle grasping a “Homeward Bound” banner over a three-masted ship flying a red, white and blue American flag as well as agent’s and other flags. Reverse depicts an American flag flying from a flagpole over a three-masted whaleship in the act of cutting in. The flag has red stripes and inset silver dots for stars, and the flagpole is topped with a Liberty cap. Figures are visible on the whaleship and the sheet of blubber and the water surrounding it are colored red. Obverse of other tooth depicts a cornucopia filled with red and blue flowers above an active offshore whaling scene with mountains, a whaleship and a sperm whale in the distance, and two whaleboats capturing a sperm whale in the foreground. Reverse depicts a whaling scene with two whales surfacing near a three-masted whaleship in the act of trying down in the distance, and a right whale in the foreground. Lengths 5.5”. Alexander M.C. MacCormick’s love of the ocean and of sailing began when he was growing up in Sydney, Australia. After emigrating to the United States at age 18, he spent some summers in the former whaling port of Westport Harbour, Massachusetts, where his interest in scrimshaw began. He began collecting in earnest in 1960, as can be seen in the meticulous records he kept (see previous page). His first purchases were made in the New Bedford area, but he also acquired pieces in Hyannis, Nantucket, San Francisco and London. Alex, born in 1930, was the grandson of Sir Alexander MacCormick, a highly regarded yachtsman and surgeon who served in the Boer and First World Wars. He spent much of his career as a director of SI Group, Inc. (formerly Schenectady Chemicals, Inc.), a multinational chemical conglomerate started by his grandfather Howard Wright in 1906. He was also an avid sailor and croquet and tennis player. He passed away following a long battle with prostate cancer in 2014.

POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE’S TOOTH Mid-19th Century Obverse depicts a large brig entering a harbor with a curving tropical coastline. A large American flag flies off the stern of the vessel and several figures are visible on deck, one holding a spyglass and one who appears to be pulling in the sails as the ship readies to drop anchor. Two of the figures have black faces, exemplifying the diversity of the ship’s crew. The flag’s canton, the ocean and the dense landscape are colored blue. Reverse with a beautifully executed full-length portrait of a woman with pinpoint outline. Her face is turned away from the viewer and she holds a letter in her outstretched right hand. Her elaborate dress is accented with flower blossoms at the bust, sleeves and down the length of her skirt, and she has flowers in her hair. The flowers and the crosshatch design at the hem of her dress are colored red and green. Both sides with some deeply engraved elements including palm tree fronds on obverse and flowers on the reverse. Lot 117 is believed to be the hand of William H. Bunker of Nantucket. According to Dr. Stuart M. Frank of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Nantucket whalemen helped establish a short-lived whale fishery in Hudson, New York, the home port of the George Clinton. The ship sailed from Hudson in 1834 and was lost off the New Jersey coast as it was homeward bound in January 1838. It appears all hands and scrimshaw were saved from the wreck.

The ship depicted on this tooth is believed to be the U.S.S. Lexington, a U.S. Navy sloop commissioned in 1826 under the command of William B. Shubrick. Her service included protecting fishing vessels off Labrador and returning the body of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry after he died aboard ship in the Caribbean. Under the command of Benjamin W. Booth she cruised the Mediterranean from 1827 until 1830, and then was decommissioned when she returned to Virginia. She was recommissioned less than a year later under the command of Silas Duncan and served with the Brazil Squadron until 1836, notably raiding Luis Vernet’s settlement in the Falkland Islands, where three American ships had been captured. The Lexington took seven prisoners aboard, all of whom were charged with piracy. In later years she protected American commerce on the Pacific Coast, served as a store ship, sailed back to the Mediterranean, then served in the war with Mexico in 1846. Toward the end of her career she was part of Matthew C. Perry’s expedition to Japan in 1853. She was decommissioned in 1855 and sold in 1860. According to the consignor, the tooth descended in the Turner family, from which a member served aboard the ship.

SCRIMSHAW WHALE’S TOOTH BY C.G. TOUSEY Mid-19th Century Obverse titled “River Silwund in Persia” is signed lower right “C.G. Tousey”. Depicts a bridge over a river with palm trees and domed and other buildings on both shores and a rowboat and sailing vessel in the foreground. Image is similar to an illustration in The People’s Magazine published in 1834. The River Silwund is said to have flowed through the city of Khan-e-Keen, believed to be in what is now eastern Iraq. Reverse titled “Virginia Water” depicts the lake in Virginia Water, England, with the Chinese Fishing Temple on the far shore, two fishermen in a rowboat at right and a large three-masted sailing vessel at left, believed to be the ship built by the Royal Family, who frequented the lake. Pique border along lower edge of scene. Both sides exhibit skillful workmanship and the reflections of the bridge and the fishing temple in the water are particularly well executed. According to the Biographical Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artists by Stuart M. Frank (2018), Charles G. Tousey was born in Burlington, Vermont, but grew up primarily in Newtown, Connecticut. He was issued a Seaman’s Protection paper in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1836, at age 28, and his whaling voyages, currently unidentified, were probably in Rhode Island ships. Later on, he worked as a saddler in Connecticut and had six children. He died in 1880.

William Perry, son of New Bedford whaleman Frank Antone Perry, was born in California in 1894, but the family returned to New Bedford shortly thereafter. He worked briefly as a glass cutter at the Pairpoint factory before spending most of his career doing odd jobs and working as a tattoo artist. His artistic talents were noticed when he was a child and he became interested in scrimshaw in his early 20s. He estimates he engraved more than 1,000 pieces in his lifetime, some of which are in the collections of the New Bedford Whaling Museum and Mystic Seaport. Perry frequently collaborated with his friend Albert M. Williams, also of Azorean descent. Williams worked at his family’s large funeral parlor in New Bedford and carved bone and wood items in his spare time. He specialized in carving whales, but he routinely made bases for Perry’s teeth. The practice was done for the practical purpose of catching food but also for sport by the aristocracy.

Worn as a mark of noble birth and status, these pendants were worn on important occasions by both men and women, and possibly by men in battle. They were typically the centerpiece of a necklace made from human hair that was braided and gathered into two large coils. The symbolism of the pendant’s shape is still unknown; theories posit it represents a stylized tongue for the word of the law or that it alludes to supernatural powers.

Pierced for possible use as a pendant. Possibly a Maori “hei mataua” or a similar symbolic carving. Length 3”. 2) Carved bone fish hook with three grooves on shank. Length 2.88”. 3) “Shark hook” made from a single V-shaped piece of hardwood bound in rope, possibly coconut fiber. One side of V with large barb; other side affixed to a length of rope supported by a wooden dowel. Although referred to as a shark hook, this style of hook was used in Micronesia to catch ruvettus fish in deep waters outside reefs. Overall length approx. 24”. 300/500

George Grant was the youngest son of Captain Charles Grant, considered by the island newspaper Inquirer and Mirror as “the most famous whaleman”. He went to sea in 1825, at age 11, and worked his way up the ranks, retiring as a captain in 1881. His wife and children often accompanied him on his voyages. George Grant was born in 1857 and sailed and served as a whaleman aboard his father’s ships until he was 17, at which time he signed on with the Mary Frazier. His career lasted thirty-three years, and after retirement, he worked at a lifesaving station and as a curator of the Nantucket Whaling Museum. He died in 1942.

The 1886 America’s Cup was accepted a few months after the 1885 match. The challenge pitted Lt. William Henn’s BeavorWebb designed cutter Galatea against Charles J. Paine’s Genesta. Because Galatea was six feet longer than the previous defender Genesta, Edward Burgess was commissioned to design a new defense candidate for Paine. Paine named the new boat Mayflower, inspired by colonial history. The 1886 match was interesting because of the startlingly contrasting styles of the two principles: William Henn, who with his wife pursued a life of pleasure sailing, and Col. Charles J. Paine, a firm and brilliant military leader and avid yachtsman.

Built in 1855 in Hamburg by Reiherstieg Shipyard for J.C. Godeffroy & Son, the Saturnes was later purchased by C.A. Banck of Helsingborg, Sweden, in 1881. She was a good-sized ship for the time and her principal dimensions were 177 x 33 x 21.1 feet. Banck didn’t have her for long as she is recorded as “abandoned” in the 1887 Lloyd’s Register.

The Manteo was one of the last great cotton freighters built by Ezra Weston II, also known as “King Caesar”, and the ship was the last vessel launched from the Weston Ten Acre Shipyard in 1843. Ezra Weston II, like his father before him, was a prominent shipbuilder and merchant based primarily in Duxbury, Massachusetts. At its height, Weston’s fleet was possibly the largest in the United States and included the largest merchant vessels in New England. Weston’s 1809 Federal mansion is preserved as part of the Duxbury Rural & Historical Society.

The 1930 America’s Cup was the first to be held off Newport, Rhode Island, and was the first to be raced in J-Class yachts. Sir Thomas Lipton offered his fifth and final challenge on behalf of the Royal Ulster Yacht Club with Shamrock V, built by Camper Nicholson. The defender Enterprise was built by Nathaniel Herreshoff, with the first duraluminum mast, which was significantly lighter than Shamrock V’s wooden mast. Shamrock V had an outstanding racing season during the summer of 1930, winning 15 races and coming in second in four more, and she crossed the Atlantic with a great deal of expectation. The races began in hazy conditions off Newport and Enterprise, skippered by Harold Vanderbilt, won the first two races easily, but in the third race Shamrock V was leading until she lost her main halyard and had to be towed back to port. In the fourth race Enterprise won by nearly six minutes and retained the America’s Cup.

The Governor Cobb was America’s first turbine-powered steamboat. Named for Maine governor William T. Cobb, the 289-foot ship launched in 1906. From her homeport of Bath, Maine, she sailed the New England coast until 1937, when she was recruited for naval service during World War II. In June 1944 she was converted to the first helicopter launching ship. She was scrapped in 1947.
Provenance: Originally owned by Eastern Steamship employee Edward Waldron, who acquired the table in the late 1930s during an overhaul of the Governor Cobb. By descent in the Waldron family.

The oceanliner S.S. Saale is perhaps most well known for the damage she sustained in the Hoboken Docks Fire on June 30, 1900. She was owned by the North German Lloyd Company of Bremen and was built in Glasgow in 1886. She primarily sailed between Bremen and New York until she sank in the infamous docks fire, in which 99 of her passengers and crew were killed. She was later raised and rebuilt and sold multiple times before she was broken up permanently in 1924. The Hoboken Docks Fire damaged three vessels, multiple buildings and took more than 300 lives. Following the tragedy, regulations were revised to require portholes be large enough to allow a person to escape.

ILLUSTRATED SHIP’S JOURNAL Circa 1810 Journal of Seth Barlow “for his own Amusement” kept onboard the brig Nancy, one part covering a “Voyage from New York Towards Gottenbourg, Began Monday March 26th AD 1810”, then later “a passage from Christien Sound in Norway to Newry in Ireland”, all under captain Nathan Briggs. Written in a flourished calligraphy with ink drawings of ships, fish, whales, porpoises, birds and other sealife throughout. Barlow, from Rochester, Massachusetts, also included a list of items he purchased and brought onboard, including shoes, paper, knife, tobacco, cigars, etc., with the price he paid for each item. Other crew members include Timothy Hillar, Allen Dexter, Silas Briggs, Silvanus Briggs, Thomas Hendrick, Joseph Smith and two boys. Other locales mentioned include Mull of Cantire, Isle of Man, Carlingford and Warren’s Point. The last entry is dated May 20, 1811. Retains what appears to be its original handstitched canvas cover, approx. 13.75” x 8.75”. Pages approx. 12.5” x 8”. 3,000/5,000

2. Pre-sale estimates are provided by the auctioneers for the convenience of our customers. They are not meant to be taken as a guide to the value of an item, but as a guide to its expected selling price. Estimates are prepared well in advance of a sale and are subject to revision.

3. Carefully examine any item that you might consider bidding on for any variation from the catalog description. If you are unfamiliar with auction procedure or terminology, or if you would like clarification of a catalog description, please ask for assistance from our staff. 4. If you wish to leave an Absentee Bid or request a Telephone Bid, please review the Absentee/Telephone Bid Procedure and complete the Bid Form. 5. A buyer’s premium will be added to the hammer price of all property sold, to be paid as part of the purchase price. Shipping Information
We provide shipping services directly from our gallery for select merchandise including small items, small paintings and rugs. Our staff can assist with determining if your items qualify for in-house shipping. Shipments from our gallery may take four to six weeks from receipt of payment. You will be charged for the shipping or carrier fees, packing and handling fees, and required insurance. There is a minimum handling charge of $15.00 for all shipments. Depending on the carrier, insurance limits may exist (i.e., Federal Express will only insure up to $500). If we are unable to ship your items we will provide you a list of alternative shipping agents. Upon your approval we will transfer your items to your chosen shipping agent. We require seven to ten business days for your payment to clear our banking system before releasing purchases to your chosen shipping agent.
Shipping estimates can be provided only AFTER we receive payment for your invoice.

CONDITIONS OF SALE 1. CORRECTNESS OF DESCRIPTION: Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc. (hereinafter referred to as Eldred’s) has exercised reasonable care to catalog and describe correctly the property to be sold, but neither Eldred’s nor its consignors warrant the correctness of description, attribution, authenticity, or condition of said property. No statements shall be deemed such a warranty or representation or an assumption of liability with respect thereto, but are to be construed as opinions only. Bidders are encouraged to personally examine all property to be sold prior to the beginning of the auction. 2. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered. 3. Eldred’s reserves the right to withdraw any property before the sale. 4. DETERMINATION OF HIGHEST BIDDER: The highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer may determine who is the successful bidder or the auctioneer may re-offer the article in dispute and his decision shall be final. 5. REJECTION OF BIDS: The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any nominal raise or any bid or raise which, in his opinion, is not commensurate with the value of the article being offered. At his discretion, he may also reject any nominal raise or any bid that he may determine as having a detrimental effect on the item in question or the sale as a whole. Eldred’s may refuse to issue bidding privileges to any person not in good credit standing with Eldred’s, or to any person who is deemed by Eldred’s in its sole discretion, to be disruptive of or harmful to established auction practices, either before or after the acceptance of bids or the fall of the hammer. 6. TITLE: Except as herein otherwise provided, title will pass to the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer, and the property is thereafter at the purchaser’s sole risk and responsibility. 7. PAYMENT: On title passing to the highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer, and subject to all the conditions set forth herein, such bidder will thereupon pay the full purchase price. Payment in full is due at the time of sale. Any bills not paid in full within 25 days of the date of the sale will accrue interest at a rate of 1.5% per month. In addition, the purchaser may be subject to one or more of the following actions: a) Any and all legal remedies available to Eldred’s and its consignors by law including without limitation the right to hold the purchaser liable for the total purchase price; b) Immediate cancellation of the sale, with Eldred’s retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser; c) Resale of the property at public auction, wherein the original purchaser shall be liable for any deficiency, costs, and Eldred’s commission on both sales. At Eldred’s option, payment will not be deemed to have been made in full until Eldred’s has collected funds represented by checks, or in the case of bank or cashier’s checks, their authenticity has been confirmed. A buyer’s premium will be added to the hammer price to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. 8. ORDER BIDS: Subject to these Conditions of Sale and to such terms and conditions as it may prescribe, but at no charge to the customer, Eldred’s will undertake to execute all order bids submitted to it by a customer who has established credit with said company. Requests for such bidding must be given in writing with such clearness as to leave no room for misunderstanding as to the amount to be bid and must state the catalog number and the name or title of the article to be bid on. Telephone bids must be confirmed in writing or by cable. All bids are kept in strict confidence. In the event of identical bids, the earliest received by Eldred’s will take precedence. Eldred’s shall not be held responsible for errors or failure to execute bids. A deposit of 10% of the total amount bid is required. TELEPHONE BIDS: While the sale is in progress,
bidding by telephone may be allowed by the auctioneer at his discretion. A deposit of 10% of the anticipated top bid is required. Eldred’s shall not be held responsible for any failure to properly execute such a bid whether it be due to equipment failure, loss of connection, or failure to hear or understand the bidder’s directions. Any advice or opinions provided by Eldred’s or its employees are given strictly as a courtesy and are not a warrant of condition, attribution, authenticity, or description of said property. All bidding by telephone is solely at the risk of the bidder. 9. CONDITION: If for any cause whatsoever any article sold cannot be delivered, or cannot be delivered in as good condition as the same may have been at the time of sale, due to a failure or damage on the company’s part, the sale will be cancelled, and any amount that may have been paid on account of the sale will be returned to the purchaser. EXCEPTION: Eldred’s will not be held responsible for damage to picture frames or lampshades. 10. SALES TAX: All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts sales tax (currently 6.25%) unless the purchaser: a) possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption or resale number and registers that number with the company; b) is an out‑of‑state vendor who meets all the requirements of Massachusetts Department of Revenue GLC 64H 1(5) and Directive 89‑10 and registers with the company prior to each purchase; or c) has purchases shipped out of state directly from Eldred’s by a bona fide shipping agent. Dealers, museums, etc. can apply for a Massachusetts number prior to the auction by contacting the Massachusetts Department of Corporations and Taxation, 100 Cambridge Street, Boston, MA 02204. 11. RESERVES: Unless advertised as an “Unreserved Auction”, all sales may have items subject to reserve (an agreed upon price between the auctioneer and the consignor, below which the article will not be sold). 12. COLLECTION OF PURCHASES: Delivery or shipping arrangements must be made within seven (7) days from the close of the auction for all purchases. All items must be removed from Eldred’s facilities within fourteen (14) days of the end of the auction. All items remaining after fourteen days may be subject to a $5/per item/perday storage fee. No items will be released unless storage fees are paid in full. Items remaining over thirty (30) days from the close of the auction may be sold for the buyer’s account minus auction and storage fees. Items made with whalebone, whale ivory or other protected species will not be shipped internationally without necessary permits. Obtaining said permits is the obligation of the buyer. 13. PACKING: Purchasers are advised that packing and/or handling by Eldred’s employees is undertaken solely as a courtesy for the convenience of customers. In the case of fragile articles, it will be undertaken at the sole discretion of the company. Handling and packing by Eldred’s is at the risk of the purchaser. SHIPPING: When requested, Eldred’s may arrange shipment of paid purchases. Eldred’s will not be responsible for damage or loss once the item has been received by the shipper. In the case of fragile articles, shipping will be undertaken at the sole discretion of the shipper. Please refer to our Advice to Bidders for details. 14. These Conditions of Sale cannot be altered except in writing by Eldred’s or by public announcement by the auctioneer at the time of the sale. 15.
