When he challenged America to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade, he was asking us to reach for the stars, and we did.

Assassinated just 1,036 days into his Presidency, Kennedy’s legacy remains unfinished. A charismatic leader, a great orator, a champion of the poor, a patron of the arts, a skilled diplomat, a war hero, an idealist, an innovator, the husband of a beautiful and intelligent wife, the father of two adorable children – in our national memory, Kennedy still commands our fascination for who he was, and for what he might have become. It is appropriate that some of his personal items would be auctioned here on Cape Cod, not far from his Hyannis Port home, a place where he came to rest, to be with his family, and to be inspired by the area’s natural beauty. 1322. AARON ABRAHAM SHIKLER New York, 1922-2015 Study for John F. Kennedy’s official White House portrait. Signed and dated lower right “AAS ‘70”. White chalk and charcoal on gray-green paper by J. The official White House portraits of both President Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline were painted by Aaron Shikler. Mrs. Kennedy was introduced to the master portraitist’s work by members of the Lawford branch of the Kennedy family, and in 1967 she commissioned the artist to paint portraits of her children and a family portrait for her personal collection. In 1970, Mrs. Kennedy was a member of the committee that selected Shikler for President Kennedy’s official posthumous portrait, which was to hang in the White House in perpetuity. Upon his selection, Shikler produced five studies to present to Mrs. Kennedy: two larger works, both likely candidates for the official portrait, and three smaller works. The portrait offered here is one of the two larger studies presented to Mrs. Kennedy. The other larger study was selected for the official portrait, the iconic view of the president, depicted with his head bowed and his arms folded across his chest.
Shikler, who had never met the president, created the studies and the final portrait based on photographs. He told the Washington Post in 1971, “I painted him with his head bowed, not because I think of him as a martyr, but because I wanted to show him as a president who was a thinker. A thinking president is a rare thing.” Shikler completed the official White House portrait of Mrs. Kennedy at the same time, and both were unveiled February 4, 1971. Mrs. Kennedy’s portrait, which depicts her in a full-length peach gown, hangs in the East Wing. Shikler also painted a posthumous portrait of Robert F. Kennedy, which hangs in the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building, as well as portraits of President Ronald Reagan, First Lady Nancy Reagan and Queen Noor of Jordan. Shikler is among the most important American portraitists of the 20th Century.

President Kennedy used rocking chairs, per the recommendation of Dr. Janet Travell, to alleviate chronic and severe pain in his back, which he injured during World War II while heroically rescuing the crew of PT-109 after it sank in the Solomon Islands. Sitting for long meetings aggravated his back, so he commissioned a number of rocking chairs to use in the White House and at his various personal residences. Lot 1324 was used at Kennedy’s suite at the Carlyle, sometimes referred to as the “New York White House” given how frequently he stayed there. It was at the Carlyle that he decided to invite Robert Frost to recite a poem at his Inauguration. Jacqueline Kennedy, who was in the midst of an historic restoration of the White House, purportedly balked at including a simple rocker amongst the mansion’s furnishings, supposedly saying, “A rocker is a rocker and there isn’t much you can do to make it look like anything else”. However, rockers have been beloved by Americans since Benjamin Franklin is said to have devised the form in the 18th Century, and Kennedy was probably not the first president to use one.
Kennedy conducted many meetings while seated in rocking chairs, famously quipping, “It gives you a sense of motion without any sense of danger”.

Pens used in signing the following legislation: 1) Executive Order 10924 establishing the Peace Corps, March 1, 1961. Orders the State Department to establish a temporary Peace Corps, which would send trained and able Americans to areas of need throughout the world. The Peace Corps Act was enacted later that year, establishing a permanent agency. 2) Area Redevelopment Act, May 1, 1961. Authorizes the Area Redevelopment Administration to borrow money from the Treasury to finance loans for industrial and rural redevelopment, purchase or development of lands, technical assistance and vocational training. 3) Social Security Benefits, June 30, 1961. Extended Social Security benefits, raised the minimum monthly benefit, lowered the collection age from 65 to 62 at a reduced rate, and increased benefits to survivors and dependents. 1325
4) Housing Act Bill, June 30, 1961. Drastically increased Federal funds for urban renewal, elderly housing, mass transit incentives and utility improvements. 5) Federal Water Pollution HR 6441, July 20, 1961. Doubled the Federal effort to stop water pollution. 6) National Seashore Park HR 5857, August 7, 1961. Established the Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts. 7) Wheat and Feed Grain Bill, August 8, 1961. Aimed to reduce crop surplus and increase farm income. 8) Juvenile Delinquency and Youth Offenses Control Act of 1961, September 22, 1961. Established the first Federal program to combat juvenile delinquency.

COLLECTION OF FIFTEEN PENS PRESIDENT KENNEDY USED TO SIGN LANDMARK LAWS Easterbrook fountain pens each imprinted “The President - The White House”, used in signing some of the most important legislation of the Kennedy administration, including laws pertaining to nuclear disarmament, protection of the environment and the establishment of the Peace Corps. Accompanied by a letter of authentication from Dave Powers, the first curator of the John F. Kennedy Library. Also includes two colored photographs of John F. Kennedy signing legislation in the Oval Office. Pens housed together in a shadow box frame with plaque marked “Landmark Laws of the John F. The first update of public welfare legislation since the program was established in 1938, the Amendment provided for work training and family rehabilitation. 11) World’s Largest Atomic Power Plant, September 26, 1962. Authorized construction of a plant in Hanford, Washington. 12) Trade Expansion Act, October 11, 1962. Strengthened trade with Europe through reduced tariffs. 13) Racial Discrimination Act of 1962, November 20, 1962. Barred racial and religious discrimination in Federally funded housing. 14) Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, October 7, 1963. Prohibited above-ground nuclear testing, signed jointly by the United States, the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom. It was the first disarmament agreement of the nuclear era, and was one of Kennedy’s most notable achievements. 15) Maternal and Child Health and Mental Retardation Planning Amendments Act of 1963, October 24, 1963. Authorized grants to cover prenatal care for low-income pregnant women.

1326. JOHN F. KENNEDY’S PT-109 TIE CLIP Gold-colored tie clip in the form of patrol torpedo boat PT-109 in water, with “Kennedy” etched into the hull. Housed in a wooden frame with a letter of authenticity on White House stationery from Martin Underwood, special assistant to the president, dated January 1964. Clip height .75”. Length 2.75”. PT (Patrol Torpedo) boats are closely associated with Kennedy, who commanded one during World War II and who heroically endeavored to save members of his PT-109 crew after it sank in the Solomon Islands in 1943. The PT-109 tie clips were made in the 1960s and were highly coveted by Kennedy-era officials. On November 21, 1963, a mere 18 hours before his assassination, President Kennedy wore this tie clip at a testimonial dinner in Houston. Kennedy’s special assistant, Martin Underwood, took this clip from the president’s tie that night and replaced it with an identical one.

This stereo was an important personal object of the president’s, and he brought it with him when he traveled so he could always listen to his favorite music. (A master sergeant was responsible for setting up the stereo in advance of the president’s arrival at various destinations.) This was a highquality, innovative model for its day.

These notes reflect some of Kennedy’s earliest thoughts on the political situation in Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Kennedy had traveled to Vietnam in the early 1950s to observe first-hand the political climate there. These notes refer to troop movement, U.S. aid, the Gulf of Tonkin and forcing France to allow independence.

Profiles in Courage provides biographical sketches of eight United States Senators whom Kennedy believed had exhibited remarkable courage and integrity while under exorbitant pressure from their parties and constituents. Much of the book profiles senators who strived to delay or avoid the Civil War, despite the criticism and loss of popularity it yielded them. The book became a best seller and won the 1957 Pulitzer Prize. Kennedy wrote it during his leave of absence from the Senate in 1954, when he was recovering from near-fatal back surgery. He had a long-standing interest in acts of political courage; his senior thesis at Harvard, later published as Why England Slept, described British political leader’s failure of courage in countering opposition to rearmament, leaving the country vulnerable in the early years of World War II. Kennedy is said to have been inspired by the conflicting pressures he himself had faced as a Congressman and a Senator, and his experiences as commander of PT-109.
