Lesson body
• The teacher sets the pur pose for reading each section of text (larger texts that have been chunked). For example, I want you to read to discover/find out …
• The students read the text themselves, individually. (Fluent students are encouraged to read silently.)
• The teacher models, scaffolds and conducts a mini-lesson to prepare students for reading . The discussion is focused and related to learning goals. There will be questions and answers leading into more in-depth discussion – teachers will try to use a range of questions ensuring that not all questions are ‘closed’. In this way, the discussion may explore text features, key ideas and identified challenges.
• The teacher probes the students’ under standing – asking for clarification, reasons why, evidence from the text and other ideas.
• The students are encouraged to think and talk about what they are reading.
