‘07 Welcome to Bealtaine 2007. This is the twelfth year of Bealtaine, the national festival which celebrates creativity in older age, co-ordinated nationally by Age and Opportunity (an agency set up to challenge negative attitudes to ageing and to promote greater participation by older people in society). Bealtaine aims to involve older people in the arts, through expression and active participation. It also encourages older people to engage as an experienced audience for all art forms.

Programme Launch Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar on Thursday 26th April at 2.00pm Everybody is welcome to join Mayo County Council Arts Office at the launch of the Bealtaine 2007 programme in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar on Thursday 26th April at 2.00pm. Cllr. Gerry Coyle, Cathaoirleach, Mayo County Council will officially launch the programme. Tea/Coffee and sandwiches will be served and music will be provided by the Rod Patterson Jazz Quintet. The recently formed Rod Patterson Jazz Quintet is made up of session musicians who have featured on numerous studio recordings and are seen regularly on Irish TV screens. They have worked with many artists - Liam O’Flynn, Van Morrison, Ronan Keating, Johnny Mathis…and in a diverse range of musical styles - trad. Irish, pop, rock, classical, musical theatre and folk. This appearance features the quintet playing Jazz, Latin, Blues and Swing standards from the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

The Programme This extensive programme features over sixteen events and 28 workshops covering the entire county. Bealtaine is expanding every year and in order to deliver the programme, Mayo County Council’s Arts Office is working in association with Active Retirement Groups and Health Care settings. In addition, this year, four ARA groups will be doing three consecutive arts workshops. These workshops were offered on a first come first served basis and will provide a better arts experience for those involved. Furthermore, Arts Venues in the county offer excellent opportunities to participate and see quality arts events.

The Bread and Puppet Theater is one of the oldest, nonprofit, selfsupporting theatrical companies in the USA. Peter Schumann founded Bread and Puppet in 1962 on New York City’s Lower East Side. The theatre is now an internationally recognised company that champions a visually rich, street-theatre brand of performance art. Its shows are political and spectacular, with huge puppets made of papier-machÊ and cardboard, a brass band for accompaniment, and anti-elitist dances. Most shows are morality plays - about how people act toward each other whose prototype is "Everyman." Their overall theme is universal peace.

Mayo Artsquad - Established in 1997 with FĂ S support, Mayo County Council's Arts Squad has continued to provide excellent training in community arts skills for fifteen participants annually. The participants on Arts Squad come from a wide variety of backgrounds and work with groups from all communities, providing workshops, training and street theatre. The Arts Squad also works extensively with festivals throughout the county.

Six members of the Bread & Puppet Theater will be working with Artsquad to create puppets and props for circus and theatre performances at the end of May which will involve local community arts workers and local community groups of all ages.

Early Quartet The Early Quartet began playing together in 1996 out of a mutual love of music and have been giving regular performances ever since. They specialise in a rare blend of baroque and classical with more modern pieces by composers like Kern and Porter. Their lead violinist is Patrick Early who holds a Masters Degree in classical string performance and plays a Perri violin made in 1811. Sara McHugh is on 2nd violin. Philip Dunlop plays viola and Marie Farrell is the Cellist. Their work is subtly understated and only on close listening can one appreciate the delicate intricacies of their arrangement, many of which are worked out by Philip. The broad scope of their repertoire and the care and attention given to detail make this ensemble a pleasure to listen to and a stimulating experience for the music connoisseur.
