Hot Potatoes

MoodleTxt

Hot Potatoes are a number of electronic quizzes including crosswords, drag and drops and multiple choice quizzes. You can use this to assess the learner to ensure they have sufficient knowledge of the subject. These are available as webpage's or you can use them in Moodle. The software is free to download for home use from; http://hotpot.uvic.ca/

MoodleTxt allows users of Moodle to send SMS via the web to their learners. This is a great tool for passing on important information quickly. Once their mobile number is in Moodle, you can send information about the course, reminders, homework, revision, hints and tips. A very useful tool to everyone in College. To get your MoodleTxt activated, contact Ian Johnson on Ext. 5693.

Content Generator

Activote/ActivExpression

Available via www.contentgenerator.net/ there a number of free quiz makers available for you to download, and use in class or link to them via moodle. The quizzes allow the learner to have fun whilst being tested, with games such as fling the teacher and teacher invaders.

Activote/ActivExpression quizzes are multiple choice quizzes for the teacher to use in the classroom. There can be many different types of response for the learner such as true or false, multiple choice 4 or 6 and you can even use it for likert scales. Great assessment and evaluation tool as the learner is interacting in the classroom with the quiz and the handsets. Classtools.net Classtools.net is also available via the web at www.classtools.net, the website has lots of different quiz makers and activities for you to download on your computer, they are also Free.

VARK is a questionnaire that provides users with a profile of their learning preferences. These preferences are about the ways that they want to take-in and give-out information. To access VARK log onto the College Intranet

Mind mapping software that is perfect for planning those lessons, and is free for you to download at home. You can also run a portable version from a memory stick.

Promethean

BKSB Is a fully interactive and self-marking assessment that gives a clear indication of a learner’s current ICT, Literacy and Numeracy levels. This assessment is suitable for all learners and is specified to national standards for basic and functional skills, which is suitable for all learners. To access BSKB log onto the College Intranet.

Open Office Open Office is an is an office application suite which allows you to use software for Word Processing, Presentations, Spreadsheets and much more, without the cost of Microsoft Office. It allows you to save your documents that is supported by Microsoft Office, and best of all, you can use it on Moodle.

Xerte Allows you to create Interactive Learning Resources easily. It has recently been developed by University of Nottingham and it has become very popular, it produces resources that are accessible, interactive and interesting. You can include video’s, sounds, images and quizzes, and they sit nicely both inside of Moodle and on its own.

Flying Start This offers essential preparation for learners education at a higher level. It will prepare them for a different working environment, and will them to become a more skilful and effective learner.

The Colleges Interactive Whiteboards come with some really good software call ActivStudio/ActivInspire. You can use this to create you flipcharts before the lesson. There are also thousands of pre-made resources online at www.prometheanplanet.com/uk they are downloadable to your PC to help you teach. To get either of these go to www.eduapps.org, and download them both. They are both portable so you can run them from a memory stick no need to worry about installing them on your PC.
