UNLOCK THE CITY WITH MAYOR WAYNE WRIGHT

Q

Where do you like to take visitors when they come to town? New Westminster’s historic waterfront is a great place to take anyone visiting our city. When the weather is nice, I love to take friends for a gelato and walk the boardwalk to Westminster Pier Park while enjoying the sights and sounds of the Fraser River.

Q

What do you think is the most unique feature of our city? As the oldest city in western Canada, New Westminster has many heritage features and a strategic location on the river. We are also a city well known for our community spirit. All of this combined with our parks, trails and access to public transit make New Westminster a unique place within the region.

Q

Fill in the blank: In a word, New Westminster is . That’s easy – New Westminster is “the place to be.”

Q

Are there any new openings that you are excited to see this year? 2013 brings with it many projects. I am really looking forward to the re-opening of the Queensborough Community Centre in early summer that will be home to a new library branch, community police office, childcare facility and state of the art fitness centre that will serve residents of this great part of our city. And like so many others in our community, in 2014 I am very excited about the opening of our new civic centre and conference facility – Anvil Centre – along with the unveiling of the “Wait for Me Daddy!” war memorial in our historic downtown.

Q

Is there an event or festival that you especially look forward to each year? New Westminster hosts so many festivals and events each year that it’s hard to choose just one! However, events such as the Show’n’Shine, Uptown Live! and Canada Day in Queen’s Park are a few of my favourites.

WHY IS NEW WESTMINSTER CALLED THE ROYAL CITY? The name New Westminster was chosen by Queen Victoria in 1859, when the city was officially declared the capital of the Colony of British Columbia. The Queen named the city after Westminster, her favourite part of London. Since it was named by royalty, New Westminster soon became known as the Royal City. Incidentally, the original name given to the city by Governor James Douglas was Queensborough (Colonel Richard Moody preferred “Queenborough”). Today, Queensborough survives as the name of a distinct neighbourhood of New Westminster just across the Fraser River.

Inn at The Quay – Unique Over-the-Water Retreat

I

nn At The Quay is a break from beige and boring. The 126-room luxe hotel and meeting venue suspended above the Fraser River sports a chic South Beach vibe. Quirky furnishings and hits of colour, from funky fuchsias to cool aquamarines and rich indigos, create a playful scene.

Mini getaways “There’s so much here for guests to enjoy,” says Lana Berar, director of sales at Inn At The Quay. “The hotel really is a mini retreat with waterfront guestroom balconies, free weekly wine flight night socials, al fresco riverside dining at The Boathouse, and the new Quay boardwalk attractions at our doorstep.”

Enjoy the Quay boardwalk’s completely revamped River Market next door. Don’t miss the new 360 Food Experience, including one restaurant featured on the Food Network’s Eat St. series. Walk to the new Pier Park for a picnic or catch the latest blockbuster at Landmark Cinemas. When the city’s new Anvil Centre is completed, there will be even more cultural and business space, including a theatre, meeting rooms, museum and archives, and art gallery. Although the former BC Penitentiary has been largely redeveloped, several of its buildings remain, including the gates, steps, and guardhouse off East Columbia Street, which now houses a pub with a great view of the Fraser River. Royal Columbian Hospital is a landmark of the neighbourhood and recently celebrated 150 years of service. ust across the North Arm of the Fraser River, at the tip of Lulu Island, lies Queensborough. Established in the 1890s with agriculture and industry, today’s Queensborough still retains its own flavour. Most visible is Queensborough Landing – a haven of outlets, big box stores and famous name brands. Starlight Casino offers dining, entertainment, and the chance to win big at slots, poker or table games. But Queensborough has another side too: exploring the dykes that were first built by founders Alexander Ewen and Donald McGillivray to keep this lowland community from flooding, catching some rays at the riverside parks, riding the shoreline trails, and relaxing with a pint at the local pub.

RIVER MARKET

IF YOU’RE HUNGRY

If there is a symbol of New Westminster’s vitality, River Market at Westminster Quay is it.

T

he original Westminster Quay Public Market opened in 1986, but by the early 2000s, it was in need of not only renovation but also a new vision. In 2011, new owner Mark Shieh opened the doors to the completely transformed River Market. It has buzzed with happy activity and good aromas ever since. The two-storey market is home to a Hungry Floor and a Curious Floor. Feeding the body as well as the mind is all part of the River Market’s guiding “Food 360” vision. Market goers are fully engaged in the process, from growing to cooking to sharing to learning – and working up their appetite to begin the cycle again. They can explore the Edible Gardens, take a cooking class, shop for fresh produce, and sample the signature dishes of Hungry Floor vendors.

New Westminster Visitors Guide 2013-2014

Shop for organic and specialty groceries at Donald’s Market, sit down to Asian cuisine with West Coast sensibility at Wild Rice, or choose from among the tempting options in the food hall. There’s something for every appetite: Italian coffee and gelato at Tre Galli, sweet and savoury French crepes made to order at Crepe Des Amis, classic burgers at Wally’s Burgers, Southern barbecue platters at Re-Up BBQ, Mexican food and fresh-baked goods at Pamola Bakery, a world of tea at Great Wall Tea, and in spring 2013, Thai food was added to the menu with the opening of Longtail Kitchen. When you’re done eating, feast your eyes on the stunning antique wares of Mid-Century Modern Home and check out the handmade creations of local artisans. It’s all part of the playful, local, sustainable feeling that makes the River Market the place to be.

FEED YOUR CURIOSIT Y Ride the escalator to the Curious Floor, where people of all ages can take a class or maybe even get some work done. The Vancouver Circus School offers drop-in circus classes for both children and adults, as well as weekly yoga. International students take preparatory courses at Hanson International Academy, and Music Box Music & Theatre Academy has music and drama club fun for kids; they also produce a series of free concerts in the market. If work beckons, you might rent a space at the Network Hub. Free wi-fi is also available throughout the building.

COME OUT AND PLAY The River Market experience goes on well into the evening. The Paddlewheeler Pub’s expansive patio overlooks the Fraser River and the boardwalk. Watch the sun set, people and tugboats go by, and enjoy the game on large-screen TVs. Wander over to Wild Rice’s intimate garden patio is the place for well-crafted cocktails. If it rains, cozy up inside.

Shops at New West Station

Whether you’re coming or going, find everything you need for your trip in this remarkable shopping destination.

I

f you arrive in New Westminster by SkyTrain, the first signs of its transformation can be experienced as soon as you step off the platform at New Westminster Station. The Shops at New West Station is a vibrant hub of activity, integrating transit with shopping, dining, entertainment, and services.

Mountain Chocolate Factory, as well as unique local businesses. For example, you could enjoy personalized pampering at Limina Spa; pick up your fan gear at Prime Time Sports before taking the train to the game; or eat well at Pizza Garden, Inn Noodle House, Spud Shack, or Togo Sushi – not to mention a Toll House Cookie or six.

You can do it all here, without even leaving the station: grabbing some groceries or a cup of coffee; taking care of travel, insurance and banking needs; or enjoying a night out with dinner and a movie. In fact, the 10-screen Landmark Cinemas is the city’s newest, and only, dedicated movie theatre.

But amidst the hustle, there are places to relax and play. On the main floor, you’ll find inviting – and unusual – public seating areas and a safe, enclosed children’s play area. While sheltered from the weather, the Shops at New West Station is open-ended and above-ground, with the feel of an airy plaza. Covered parking is also available. At the centre of everything, the Shops at New West Station is a convenient place to pick up your essentials on the way home, or to prepare to begin a journey anywhere you need to go.

On the three accessible levels from platform to street, you’ll find a mix of familiar retailers, including Safeway, Shoppers Drug Mart, Starbucks, Tim Hortons, A&W, Ardene and Rocky

Creativity in all its forms thrives in our arts scene.

N

ew Westminster is home to many renowned artists and authors – we even have our own Poet Laureate. You can meet talented locals at annual arts celebrations like LitFest or the New West Culture Crawl, or, throughout the year, take in an exhibition at one of the many gem-like art galleries dotting the city.

In the mood for a great performance? Catch a show at venues as grand as the Massey Theatre or as intimate as the Bernie Legge Theatre. Take in a jam session at the historic Columbia Theatre. Applaud the talented students at Douglas College for their entertaining plays and concert series. And if you’re inspired by all that clapping and toe-tapping, you might even take a dance class or writing workshop too.

Since most galleries are commercial or in public buildings, they are free to visit or by donation. On your personal art crawl, keep an eye out for public art too, such as the new sidewalk mosaic tiles throughout the city or the historic photos and “memory band” at Westminster Pier Park.

Paddlewheeler Riverboat Tours can make your very own “ riverboat fantasy”come true!

P

addlewheeler Riverboat Tours is a full service river tour company in New Westminster, a city with a long and close association with the Fraser River.

Doug and Helga Leaney started the company way back in 1989, running a 40-passenger boat out of Fort Langley. When Paddlewheeler Riverboat Tours acquired the MV Native in 1991, she became the first passenger-carrying sternwheeler to operate in New Westminster since the 1920s. If you wander the waterfront of New Westminster today, you will likely see the 100-passenger MV Native at her dock adjacent to the Inn at the Quay, along with her running-mate the Beta Star, a 40-passenger catamaran. The Native is a real sternwheeler, although instead of a smokebelching boiler, a clean and efficient pair of Isuzu diesel engines drive her paddlewheels.

Even after 24 years, Paddlewheeler Riverboat Tours is still a family-run operation. Doug is principal captain, and Helga is the company’s manager and one of the two on-board chefs creating delicious meals for all occasions. To book your Fraser River cruise, drop by their office in the white and green BC Mills heritage house at 780 Quayside Drive, next to the Fraser River a Star Discovery Centre. et B nd a ve

F

rom playgrounds to open spaces, New Westminster Parks, Culture and Recreation provides all kinds of places where you can enjoy a full day of free family fun. And now, our newest park celebrates the best of New Westminster’s nature and heritage: Westminster Pier Park. This level, wheelchair-accessible park stretches for 600 m along the riverfront, connected by a scenic path to the River Market and Waterfront Esplanade. Eagerly anticipated before it officially opened in 2012, Westminster Pier Park has quickly become a favourite spot for residents and visitors of all ages.

Restoring nature About half of this linear, 9 acre park extends over the water, built on piers supported by over 3,000 timber piles and 176 steel beams. You may be surprised to know that this lovely, modern park is the “after” picture of many years of work reclaiming the “before” one – an industrial brownfield. Now, plants and wildlife on the shoreline have been restored, and native plants and hanging baskets are featured among the children’s playgrounds, sport courts, and lawns. To appreciate this transformation, however, simply stretch out on a lounge chair and enjoy the view.

Celebrating History You might walk, cycle or wheel along the “Memory Band” that runs the length of the park, 42

each word commemorating important local places and people, past and present. (Curious? Ask a local or visit www.newwestpcr.ca/culture/westminsterpier-park-memory-band.php for answers.) And be sure to check out the historic photo panels of New Westminster, one near Lytton Square and the other, featuring images of children, near one of the playgrounds. These historical features were put together with the New Westminster Museum and Archives.
