New Westminster Travel Guide 2014–2015
History New Westminster became British Columbia’s first capital in 1859 and was the beginning of the Gold Rush Trail. The past is with us still in a wealth of heritage buildings from Victorian and Edwardian days, including the 1865 Irving House.
Urban A “small town” in terms of geographic size and friendliness, New Westminster is a city that welcomes international events and big ideas.
Convenience Travelling without the car? No problem. Shopping, dining, entertainment and services can be literally as close as a few steps away from transit.

Q:
What’s your favourite New West experience to share with visitors?
Q:
What will surprise people who haven’t visited the city in a while?
Q:
What does New West have that you can’t find anywhere else?
I love taking people to Westminster Pier Park, and soon I’ll able to share the new Anvil Centre and Wait for Me, Daddy war memorial with them. On a stroll, we’ll see the three most exciting things in the Lower Mainland right now. All three stand by themselves, and collectively they’re of enormous significance to New Westminster. Wait for Me, Daddy will also serve as an important historical marker for the whole country.
It’s simple: the dramatic changes. We have a vision we’ve been working on for years, and you should visit more often! And in many ways, we’re just getting started. There’s lots more to come and it will be just as dramatic as what you’re seeing now.
We have a downtown on the Fraser River, one of the most magnificent rivers in Canada, if not the world. It’s a working river with everything: beautiful views, mountain canyons, gentle riverbanks, and sockeye salmon and sturgeon. You can see why this was chosen as the premier spot for a new capital city when New Westminster was founded in 1859.
Q:
Tourism is very important. One project I’d like to see is developing piers on our waterfront for small cruise ships to come in. People will be able to get off and walk right into our marvellous Westminster Pier Park, stroll over to the Quay or to the many shops and services in our historic downtown and, of course, the new Anvil Centre. Once they’re finished shopping, they can hop aboard SkyTrain, and travel anywhere in Metro Vancouver from here. They can also get on boats that, in a couple of hours, can take them into some of the most incredible nature areas in BC. It all starts in the city of New Westminster. That’s where it started, and that’s where it’s going to start again.

Anvil Centre
Visit the lively new cultural hub in downtown New
When Anvil Centre opens in September this year, it will be much more than a place to meet. The Lower Mainland’s newest civic centre brings everything together under one roof: a conference centre, performing arts theatre, art studios, museums and an art gallery. Anvil Centre offers not only a modern, fullservice facility but also a convenient location in the centre of the Lower Mainland. To attend an event, meeting or conference, participants can easily take transit – New Westminster SkyTrain is across the street – or park on location. Anvil Centre is within 30 minutes of almost anywhere in the region – ideal for events attracting participants from Vancouver to the Fraser Valley.
For organizers If you’re hosting an event, Anvil Centre’s 18,000 square feet of conference space can accommodate up to 725 people. Meeting rooms and flexible set-ups are available. In-house event staff supports every aspect of your gathering, including professional planning, catering and audiovisual services.
BUSINESS TRIPS Try these ideas for making the most of your downtime.
An hour • Grab a coffee or tea with a side of Wi-Fi. • Take a yoga or fitness class. • Walk or cycle the waterfront. • Visit the museum or art gallery in Anvil Centre.

HERITAGE MOMENTS
Storied places Visit the 1865 Irving House to see one of the oldest houses in the Lower Mainland, preserved as it was in Victorian times. To look inside other heritage houses in the area, the annual Heritage Homes Tour in May is a must-do. And the New Westminster Museum and Archives tells the stories of the city, from prehistory to today.
Take a walk
You love history and culture. Look up, look down, look around to discover secrets of the past and art in unlikely places.
Pick up a copy of Historic New Westminster Neighbourhood Tours at the Visitor Centre to design a self-guided walking tour of local landmarks. You might also join walks led by local citizens during Jane’s Walks in May or tours led by local heritage organizations. If you’re interested in river history, visit the Fraser River Discovery Centre and Samson V, then look for the interpretive displays as you walk along the boardwalk.
Eat with history With so many heritage properties, it’s only natural that some are now places to eat and drink. Raise a glass in New West’s oldest hotel, in the former BC Penitentiary guardhouse and in heritage houses converted to restaurants.

Discover New West’s History – and Future Established in 1859, New Westminster’s cultural identity shines through historic streetscapes, the arts and stories ingrained in the fabric of the city. There is no place better than Anvil Centre to begin exploring this vibrant culture. Opening in September 2014, Anvil Centre will feature a theatre, art gallery, studio spaces, a new home for the New Westminster Museum and Archives, and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Beyond Anvil Centre, explore historic sites, cultural venues and public art throughout the city.
ANVIL CENTRE New Westminster Museum and Archives The museum focuses on the land, people and development of New Westminster. The temporary gallery uses the museum’s 35,000-item collection to look in-depth at selected themes. If there is a symbol of New Westminster’s vitality, River Market at Westminster Quay is it.
T
he original Westminster Quay Public Market opened in 1986, but by the early 2000s, it was in need of not only renovation but also a new vision. In 2011, this 75,000 square-foot marketplace on the Fraser River pioneered a food-led revitalization to become a hub for community life. River Market has buzzed with happy activity and good aromas ever since. The two-storey market has a Hungry Floor and a Curious Floor. Feeding the body as well as the mind is all part of River Market’s guiding “Food 360” vision. Market goers are fully engaged in the process, from growing to cooking to sharing to learning – and working up their appetite to begin the cycle again. They can explore the Edible Gardens, take cooking classes, shop for fresh produce, and sample the signature dishes of Hungry Floor eateries.

Columbia Theatre Grand inside and out, this historic theatre is The Columbia Theatre first opened in 1927 as a cinema, vaudeville and burlesque theatre. At the time, movie palaces were built in fantastic style and this one was no different: columns, trellises and murals gave the illusion of an exotic walled garden. Today, the current owners have restored the Columbia Theatre to its original glory, and the second floor, added in the 1970s, is the home of Lafflines Comedy Club.
The Grand Room While restoring its lavish ornamentation, the Columbia’s Grand Room has been redesigned as a Vegas-style theatre. Renovations added modern lighting, sound and projection systems, plus excellent acoustics. The Grand Room seats up to 300 people at tables on four levels for great views of the stage. And what’s there to see? Live entertainment, weekly jam sessions, concerts, comedy and festivals. Fully licensed, the Grand Room can be rented for private events such as Christmas parties, weddings and corporate dinners. Catering service is available.
