DEAN’S MESSAGE Welcome to University at Buffalo School of Management.

INVESTING IN YOUR ORGANIZATION In today’s fast-paced dynamic business landscape, what separates an outstanding manager from one who is merely good? A top executive is one who is able to lead a team and communicate effectively with other managers to resolve complex problems across disciplines and achieve desired results for your company. The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) program is developed and awarded by the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Management, The State University of New York, U.S., and available through the Singapore Institute of Management Pte Ltd (SIM). It is a powerful tool designed to boost the capabilities of high-potential executives who wish to earn an American MBA while continuing to work full time. The UB Executive MBA is designed to propel mid-career managers ahead by providing:

1

Practical knowledge of the latest management decision-making techniques

A thorough understanding of the key functional areas of business

Opportunities to acquire and refine leadership and executive problem-solving skills

Superior instruction by a highly qualified, experienced faculty

When The Wall Street Journal recognized the School of Management as one of the best in the world for the seventh consecutive year, it praised the school for producing graduates who possess the skills and attributes most valued by businesses throughout the world. Forbes, once again, ranked the UB School of Management as one of the best returns on MBA investment. And BusinessWeek has ranked us as “a pioneer in the Asian market for management education.” What do these extraordinary rankings mean? Simply that the business world has given the UB School of Management a ringing endorsement. Today, our graduates are seen as extremely talented, eager to succeed, and effective leaders — an irresistible combination for employers seeking to invest in managerial capital. These glowing testimonials will have a tremendously positive impact on our students and their organizations for years to come, but what the rankings do not fully capture is the incredible momentum in our academic programs. We continue to develop innovative new programs, curricula and educational technologies that will enable our graduates to continually meet and exceed the expectations of the business world. We hope you’ll consider sponsoring an employee in our Executive MBA program. It will not only equip your staff with the essential skills needed to more fully contribute to your organization, it will also send a positive statement about your commitment to your employees’ professional development. Together, we can enjoy the benefits of the school’s continuously expanding worldwide reputation. Sincerely, Arjang A. Assad Dean, UB School of Management

As a current student in the UB Executive MBA program, the education I’ve received has enabled me to enrich my contributions to my employer. My perspective has become more diverse, my thought process more strategic and my implementation more systematic. The EMBA program has helped me become more polished in how I manage my professional responsibilities. The learning from the class includes theory, cases, discussions, insights from the faculty, analysis of best practices and common pitfalls made by global companies. There is a valuable take-away from class literally every day. Often, I am able to implement what I learned in class in my role the very next day! Who Should You Sponsor?

Strategic Leadership Within the current dynamic and competitive global business environment, organizations have to place greater emphasis on the development and execution of comprehensive business strategies. Through relevant, real-world case studies reinforced by established theoretical concepts, the UB Executive MBA will equip your employee with competencies to recognize and solve the problems found in today’s complex work environment. A unique feature of the UB Executive MBA is its programmatic focus on the essential skills required for senior-level success in management with special emphasis on strategy. The UB Executive MBA is the only program in Singapore that incorporates a concentrated focus on strategy into the core curriculum, giving your employees and your organization the competitive advantage in strategic development. UB’s Strategic Leadership Development (SLD) sequence provides augmented education around the skill sets most needed for senior-level managers. Additionally, students are required to complete a capstone project that incorporates all aspects of the EMBA experience into a culminating strategic plan, providing the essential link between theory and practice.

Sponsoring an employee is an indication of your commitment to that person and his or her contribution to the organization. You should focus on your most dynamic and valued employees. The best candidates are mid-career managers who are looking for ways to step up into senior leadership. Typically, companies send employees who have a track record of quality performance, have shown a commitment to the organization and who have high potential for continued success. The minimum application requirements for the UB Executive MBA are:

3

At least five years of management or professional experience, though most have 10-15 years

A strong undergraduate degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution

Solid communication skills in both written and spoken English

Strategic leaders execute strategy within the context of a vision for the future. The Motivation and Leadership module focuses on the development of leadership competencies associated with organizational change and development efforts aligned with the vision and strategy.

Strategic leaders effectively manage both informal and formal relationships with colleagues, superiors, customers and suppliers. The Theory and Practice of Negotiations module focuses on how to create value and advance your interests in those relationships.

Strategic leaders exploit market opportunities and firm capabilities. The Strategic Management I module focuses on developing the cognitive and analytic skills important to the content and process of setting the overall strategic direction of the firm.

Strategic Management II: The EMBA Project. In the project module, students are expected to demonstrate competence in application of the tools and techniques of the EMBA curriculum as well as the ability to understand and implement effective management practices. During this module, students create a comprehensive strategic plan that incorporates everything they have learned throughout the EMBA program. The subject of this project is determined by the student and can be used to address a company challenge or potential initiative providing tangible returns on the MBA investment.

Executive MBA Versus Traditional MBA An Executive MBA is a Master of Business Administration degree program designed to allow experienced professionals to obtain an advanced business degree on a schedule that minimizes disruption to work and personal life. The UB Executive MBA program is delivered in a cohort structure that offers a lockstep, planned curriculum in an executive setting. The Executive MBA curriculum covers the same material as UB’s traditional MBA program, but with added focus on: • The cross-disciplinary integration of subjects, such as the key linkages between accounting, finance, decision methods, marketing, information systems and human resources • The development of essential leadership and team-building skills • An understanding of international business and the implications of a rapidly evolving global economy But what really differentiates an Executive MBA from a traditional MBA is the collective professional experience of its participants, which greatly enhances the educational environment. In contrast to a traditional MBA, many of our students come to the program after 10 - 15 years in the workforce, creating a rich academic environment that is enhanced by the collective real-world experience of the students. In this program, students learn sophisticated analytical tools and implementation methods, develop efficient processes that can be applied directly to work situations and learn to formulate creative solutions to your organization’s challenges. The emphasis on group projects, practical implementation and class interaction, combined with the high level of professional experience in the cohort, provides for maximum return on time and resources invested by the students and their employers.

When I became Managing Director of my company, I was suddenly called into action whenever there was an emergency. The education that I received in the UB EMBA program gave me the tools needed to tackle poor performance and to manage conflict in the workplace essentially enhancing my ability to lead my organization. As a result of my positive experience at UB, I have continued to invest in the education of my staff by sponsoring them in the UB Executive MBA program. Not only has it improved retention and loyalty, but it has also enabled them to contribute more substantively to the success of our organization.
